They were soft and the curry taste like they were delivered from the gods. The chick peas inside were just right. Not mush and not hard. I will tell you my 2nd order was bigger lol. I got the boneless curry chicken roti. COME THRU SPICE! I am a spice head and when u get the extra spice on the side (u won't really need it) it really turns it up a notch. From first bite I closed my eyes and imagined Trinidad. My goodness what a treat! ( in the words of my favorite uncle) Don't walk, RUN! The space is bright and clean. All window. This will probably be my go to spot for roti. I've had different rotis before but never from Trinidad. Good size portions. My goat roti had tons of goat. First I saw a lot of bones and thought I got gypped, but then as I was picking through it I realized there was tons of goat. They cleaned the goat very well, cutting out the extra fat but leaving on just enough where it melts in your mouth without feeling like you're swallowing mounds of grease. Most important, not salty! Doubles are new to me. Perfect on-the-go snack. The chickpeas we're seasoned properly and it had a similar taste to the roti, just a little bit sweeter. I also had the beef aloo and that was also a first for me. It almost reminded me of a beef shepherds pie sandwich. Was comfort food in a sandwich. I was so happy to find out they sold my favorite hot sauce, Matouk, the West Indian green bottle. You have to have this hot sauce with the roti to add some acidity. I can't eat roti without it! Best hot sauce ever if you like tons of flavor and a good kick! Place is small with a couple seats. Windows steamed so you can't even see from outside. Parking is rare, but I did find parking right in front. It's been about 14 years since I had roti. That's what happens when you move to the burbs... Anyhow, we were dropping off goods to a family member in the boggie down Bronx and decided to take a detour to Ali's Roti Shop. It was exactly what I expected. A takeout spot big enough to fit 3-4 customers at one time with home style West Indian food cooked by a family. We ordered the chicken roti and it was more than we expected. Each roti was big enough to feed two grown men. The roti was perfectly cooked with seasoned potatoes, delicious curry chicken and everything in it. It was so good that even my very picky teenage son enjoyed it. The great part is that Ali's Roti Shop will adjust the pepper/heat according to your tolerance and dietary restrictions. This is a hole in the wall place with great food. What makes me come back is the owner. She is the sweetest woman! Once I saw her give a neighborhood kid some cookies from the display case because he came to say hello to her. Another time, a man who probably did not have money to pay just ran out of the shop with his food without paying. She did not say a bad word or got upset. I respect her for doing that because no one knows another man's problem unless one walks in his shoes. If he could run away without paying, he must be going through something in his life. Onward with the food, the food is very tasty. I do expect that from a Trinie. She looks like a Guyanese though. My favorite is their rotis...any one of them. The doubles are very good as well. I like this shop. My family has been eating here randomly for years. The ladies are Trini to the bone and are friendly. The gentleman in the back is hilarious. In the past 2 years, I've been coming a lot for doubles which never disappoints. However, recently, I ordered a chicken roti. The size is amazing for the price, however, there were bones. I'm not a fan of roti (or anything wrapped) with bones. I won't be ordering roti from here again. I also had the beef roti, which was huge (you can easily split this in half for 2 meals or to share w/a friend). It was very generous for the price. The Roti shop made me a little nervous at first. I work in this area every week and I always find myself in a situation where I can't find a good lunch spot. I decided to take a chance on the Roti shop based on some great Yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. My co worker and I decided to go for the beef stuffed roti and the goat stuffed roti. I originally wanted the shredded chicken roti but it's only available on Friday and Saturday. Both dishes were packed with meat and weighed about 4 pounds each. The seasoning was amazing and the meat was very tender. The goat roti was kind of a pain to eat considering all the bones but it was still worth it. We also split one of the doubles which is just chickpeas mashed between two fried pieces of dough. Also amazing. The store is a little shady, they sell convenience store items behind plexiglass and the woman who takes your order doesn't smile much. Somehow it seems like most Trini rotis in New York are made by men named Ali? Or are they all somehow related? My guess is no, as while very tasty, Bronx's rendition is just not on the same level as Crown Heights and Bedstuy Alis. The food is good, don't get me wrong. Solid Trini bakery. They were out of fish on my visit, so no bakes for me, but the thing that blew me away was the homemade pepper sauce that will completely envelope you. It goes well with everything. The doubles ($1.50 each) could have benefitted from a tamarind sauce on the side, but the pepper sauce livened them up enough. The shortbread was on par with the best of them, but the curry sauce was unfortunately weak. The doughy goodness of the aloo pie ($1.50) was best with the sauce though, which is perfect for the potato interior. read more

Wanted some traditional Trinidad food,so I , venture to Alis on White plains Rd, in the Bx. I had heard good things about it so I tried to stock up. WHAT A MISTAKE! I ordered a chicken roti, 6 roti skin and I got a currant roll. This is strictly take out. By the time I got home I was craving my food. Surprise#1 I was given a beef roti instead of the chicken that I ordered. It was tasteless & dry. No hint of traditional seasoning and no gravy.#2 The Dahl roti fell apart. The roti is supposed to be firm enough to pick up food. This one separated into layers and lentils were going everywhere. #3 The current roll was dry& tasteless, more like old , stale pastry. Definitely a Trini go to spot. The doubles are delicious $1.75. The chicken roti taste very similar to the authentic Trini roti. People complain about the price increase, but let's be honest nothing stays the same price. Your rent went up and they still didn't renovate your apt, soo stop complaining about the .50c increase. Please do not waste your time and money! It is not worth it! I drove 30 mins out of my way because I really wanted a roti. I stood outside in the 30 degree NYC weather for 20 mins and then joined the disaster of a line for another 20 mins. I wanted the roti so badly that I refuse to focus on the bright pink talons of the server glaring through the clear gloves. I even refuse to believe my eyes because the selections in front of me was not appealing. From the tasteless cardboard roti skin, to the to the tasteless and sloppy and (black looking?) Chana, to the waterlog potatoes all devour of any curry taste or smell or taste at all. I ate it and the final assault was the feeling of a huge brick in my stomach. I was nauseated. It took me 24 hours to get this out of my system. I compounded this by buying the currants roll at the same time. I could not believe it! Who messes up currants roll! They looked so good I tried to eat it the next day it was just as horrible as the roti. I had to throw them away! The only taste was the vanilla essence. Please be forewarned! read more

I got the Curry Chicken(no bones) Roti and it was good! Very filling and the portion was huge(for me it was 2 servings). It could have used a little more seasoning for my taste buds though. Next time I go, if in the area, I will ask for hot peppers/sauce because I like my food spicy. Service was fast(we ordered 5 roti's and got them in approx. 10 minutes) and the lady was friendly. Was a loyal customer to Ali's roti shop until they took my order via phone with 30min preparation time. Upon pickup and after paying, I was informed they were "too busy" to meet my accommodations. They need to re-evaluate their business model, and comprehend any exchange done is for goods and services; they are not doing anyone favors. If I wasn't "too busy" myself, I wouldn't be making a transaction from your establishment. Absolutely the worst trini spot I've been to. The food is never hot. The doubles is not soft. The peas in the doubles is hard. The salt fish don't have salt it was dry and taste less. I was trying to figure out if this was related to the real Ali's roti shop in BK. Then I went and searched and there are 4 of them in BK. What the heck is this? This is starting to become like Ray's Pizza and Gray's Papaya in the city. All these clones. So I walk inside and take stock of whats going on. First of all the front looks like they got gold bricks in the back. I guess this place is in the hood, there was enough steel and bulletproof glass in the front to stop a C4 blast. I mean I'm not a spring chicken or unused to this but who is robbing the roti shop? There was a bell you have to ring when you want to order but funny enough the door has a chime on it when you walk in. Trini people be talking loud as shit in the kitchen so I kinda understand why. Anyway on to the food A nice lady who looked and sounded like my aunt came up and took my order. The prices are pretty good. In Brooklyn you might end up paying $10 + for a roti these days but none of the roti's they had were over $9 I got a couple orders of phoulori and some doubles. I was actually heading to an NBA all star game watch party so I wasn't buying food for just myself. The doubles were very good and the phoulori wasn't greasy or over-fried. They have a huge selection of caribbean drinks but no Ting! I went to another roti spot in queens and they didn't have Ting either. Maybe they stopped making it. So definitely check this place out. Do not buy food here , I bought 2 roti's ( bussup shot ) each costs $ 3.00, this roti is a plain roti, it is round in shape and fluffy and the size of your fist. I thought it would be flaky, moist and soft like the huge bussup shot that I get from a roti shop in Ozone Park location in Queens ( Trinciti Roti Shop , oh my , my, my !! the bussup roti's here are soooooo good, flaky, buttery but not oily, huge and freshly made as you order ) but here in Ali' s roti shop the bussup shot (dough) is not fresh , you can just tell when you bite into it that its a little hard , and that its been a day old or more that it was made and they only reheated it when a customer buys it. I was really disappointed because I was hoping to feast on these bussup shot , but to my chagrin it just tastes old. I also bought the boneless chicken served w white rice( you can also have it with rice & peas ) or $11, it is also not fresh , it has been reheated , chicken tastes old. Skip this place .
