I've been going to this spot for years. I found it when I lived in the Bronx and continued to go even after I moved to Westchester. Now I live in Long Island and still, no where else compares. Authentic Trini cuisine at it's best. I've been to the other Ali's in Brooklyn and Queens and this place blows them out of the water. Prices went up and food quality went down. I ordered three doubles and a chicken roti. The doubles were awful, the bara was white and had no taste. The channa had a weird soapy flavor. The roti wasn't good either. Not sure what happened to this place but I won't return. I will go to Feroza, they have tasty food and better prices. read more

Ok in fairness to this establishment I only had 1 double which I didn't like and it could be because it was the last one and I was greedy and just took it. They really should've threw it out since it didn't taste fresh or good. The place seems pretty popular with "regulars." The doubles are delicious! They are a nice size and have just the right amount of tamarind sauce. The chicken roti was on the dry side and left much too be desired, it needed more gravy. Be prepared for a long wait. This was my first time there on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm and I had to wait 20min just to put my order in - but the doubles made it worth the wait. read more

As a long time resident of this part of the Bronx, I am always happy when there are places I can go to that sell food from my homeland, Trinidad and Tobago. I've also been cooking Trini food for most of my life, so I know how the food should taste and how it is supposed to be. Ali's Roti shop is a great place to buy roti (the flattened dough with the grounded yellow split peas in between the layers) and buss up shut skins (the pieces of dough that are ripped). Then you can go home and make your own curry and sides to go with it. I only say this because on a recent visit there, I ordered a veggie roti and inside of it was steamed cabbage and carrots. We do not put that in any type of roti in Trinidad; it is just not authentic and not the way we do it. A veggie roti should have curry potato and channa (chick peas/garbanzo beans), pumpkin talkarie (mashed pumpkin sautéed with fresh herbs and indian spices), curry mango (yes, curried green mango) and curry bodhi (chinese long bean..look it up). Anyways, I was quite disappointed because it pains me to see my culture being washed down for the sake of consumers' taste. Ali's is located right off the 233rd stop on the 2 or 5 Trains in the Bronx, a section that is predominantly Jamaican. So in my mind, I forgave them a little because they probably get a lot of requests for steamed cabbage and carrots from the community in which they are located. But still, whoever goes to Ali's and are not familiar with Indo-Trini cooking, please do not think that is how we do our roti in Trinidad. Other than that, their roti and buss up shut skins are on point, so kudos to them. I haven't gotten any other food there besides that. They do have a nice selection of Trinidadian snacks and beverages as well. read more

Every time I visit friends in this neighborhood I stop here and get paratha and pumpkin. Normally good food, and their dhalpouri is the star of the restaurant. Always soft and tasty. Good curry, but if you get nothing else get a couple bottles of their homemade peanut punch. Recently voted one of the top 100 things to get in NYC to eat or drink, this is a phenomenal beverage. Service is good, though if you need more than 5 roti skins they ask you to call ahead. Paid $44 for a channa and potato roti (dhalpouri), 2 packs of kumar, a medium pumpkin/dhal/rice combo, 2 paratha skins, a large order of pumpkin, 2 bottles of sorrel, and 4 bottles of peanut punch. read more

Excellent food! A small hole in the wall shop but the flavor is amazing! I ordered the stew oxtail with rice and peas and two doubles. It came out to $15.50. Well priced and it all tasted so good. The doubles are amazing. I can eat about ten of these! And the stew oxtail was packed to the brim. About four pounds of food was stuffed into the container. I had to save some for lunch. The two ladies inside who served me were so nice and could see that I was hungry. I'll keep on coming back for the same order over and over! read more

My old roti spot closed in Harlem. I searched and searched and searched( honestly I was lazy and didn't want to troop to Brooklyn). And with the help of Yelp and 2 friends from The Bronx I came to Ali's. It's perfect! It's exactly the way I like it! If you are not West Indian( or don't care for spicy foods) I may recommend not having them add the peppers. But all the flavors are good. I'm more particular about the goat and veggie. Great local Trini food favs

It's been a few months since I last visited Ali's Roti Shop but I will definitely be finding myself back here very soon. I used to live much closer, but I now live quite a few subway stops & a bus ride away so it's much harder to get here whenever I'm craving roti, but I refuse to go anywhere else. I adore the doubles, and the roti is ALWAYS good. I've tried the vegetable, channa, and chicken rotis and they were all very satisfying. They also have lots of options and I'm excited to go back and try something new. If you want huge portions of authentic Trinidadian food, definitely stop by Ali's. Once the weather warms up I'll definitely be making regular trips to get my roti! read more
