The ambiance is difficult to describe at this Guyanese/Chinese mash up of a restaurant. The bar area makes it appear as a.... well as... a dive kinda bar. And when I was there, which happened to be cinco de mayo, there were locals hangin at the bar. Friendly People, but still friends of the bar owner. Service was okay. The food was very good. However, after ordering the oxtail dish with rice and beans, the oxtails were few and far between. And I paid what I would consider a higher price than I usually do for oxtails. I was extremely disappointed in this restaurant. I wanted soup from a caribbean based place, so I ordered chicken soup. If you're West Indian, you know what chicken soup is supposed to look like. When I got home and opened my food the soup looked like that from the chinese restaurant (like wonton soup). I was in disbelief. Then, I remembered while I was waiting and was wondering what was taking so long the server went to the kitchen of the restaurant for about 5 minutes and I recalled an Asian woman running in the restaurant to the kitchen area herself, which was so odd to me. Im now inferring that they ordered the soup from the Chinese restaurant and served it to me. I was so mad and just threw the entire soup in the garbage. Waste of time and money. In addition, I ordered Jerk Chicken Lo Mein. It was just chicken with a store bought jerk sauce. Its not authetic to the West Indian cuisine in which this place markets itself as. I'm usually hesitant to try Guyanese restaurants from the Bronx as the reviews are never great and one restaurant really just turned me off. But coconut palm bar and grill is surprisingly good. I've only tried the potato balls, polourie and chicken fried rice but overall they were good and I would get the polourie and chicken fried rice over and over again. The potato ball isn't your typical Sybil's potato ball which apart from being made at home is my favorite. But that's just a personal choice. Food was delivery too so that's a plus for me. It may be the time of day I ordered as it was during the week on an afternoon but I would recommend this restaurant being tried as it's not the worst. Would've taken pics also but I started eating then remembered to review lol. So yeah, TLDR: if you're not willing to drive to little Guyana in Queens, give them a try! read more

If I could give this 0 stars I would, yesterday I bought food here and I usually don't but I heard they had good fry rice from this unspecified "fry rice king " this fry rice was so nasty and stale. How dare they sell stale food to their customers. My father said "where did u even buy this food?" When I heard that I knew the food was garbage when I got home. The food was also cold and I had to reheat it when I got home. my mom even said "them na ready yet" because the reality of It, they suck and I will NEVER be buying back food from here. Food is great. The oxtail stew, rice and peas are flavorful. The oxtail pieces are large, tender and juicy, and trimmed of fat well. Their dumplings are also a favorite of mine. They always play old school Indian music which is very reminiscent for Desis/South Asians. I do dislike the male staff and the men that often hang out here. I'm sure they are all friends. They hog the pool table, and on a number of incidents have approach my table of all women to verbally harass us (sexually). At one event they stole beer from our beer bucket and staff asked us to leave for because we got loud. Through out COVID 19, I have been ordering from here because we love local small businesses, and they have the best oxtail stew in the neighborhood. But their staff need to check themselves. I really enjoy this place. Not quite the Jamaican food I am used to (I believe it's Guyanese cuisine) but it definitely is fresh and well made. They have recently remodeled and it feels a bit leery inside when you pick up orders (now, orders are picked up at the bar area). I work in the area and my coworkers and I love ordering from this spot. I recommend calling your orders in advance for take-out. I wouldn't waste money on their shrimp curry. The 'jumbo' shrimp ($15) were medium, at best and they didn't give enough shrimp or curry to warrant the cost. The regular shrimp curry ($11) uses baby shrimp, maybe even salad shrimp. It tasted good, just cost too much for the amount they serve. That aside, let's get to the positives. The roti is great. You can tell they make it same day. I like the regular roti better than the dhal (chickpea) roti because it's thicker, comparable to naan bread. The fried rice is sooo good. You can tell that they use really fresh ingredients. I think a large vegetable fried rice is around $9 and it is more than enough for two people. The potato balls and polourie are awesome. I just love coming to the Bronx and picking up grub from this spot. Don't forget to ask for their scotch bonnet hot sauce...my mouth is watering just thinking about it :oD read more

But last night I ordered their shrimp fried rice, and the shrimp were literally hard and dry, as if they didn't cook it together with the rice so I was very disappointed. The way the jerk chicken tasted was indescribable. Soft, spicy, and full of flavor. I've never had better chicken from the Caribbean. The fried rice was great ! My bf ordered the mixed fried rice which was pretty amazing! The place itself is more of a bar than a restaurant. There was a lot of guys playing pool, but it was pretty much a "chill" environment. Most of the entrees are good however as a Guyanese-American I tend to order roast duck to stay away from the hot spices. The duck is always dry and bony. It's disgraceful. Compared to the other ethnic restaurants around the area, such as Pine, Caridad. Estrellita Poblano, which are highly regarded by the staff at Montefiore Albert Einstein hospital Coconut Palm's food lack's quality and the service is slow. Being in the hospitality business, they fall very short of being hospitable. The restaurant is loud from playing incessantly loud obnoxious music. You can't hear yourself think much less eat!!! Would give this place 0 stars if I could. BF was there on Friday 06/30/11, left his credit card there by accident. He couldn't get back there until Sunday 07/03/11 to pick it up. He called several times to confirm that they were still in possession of the card and if he could pick up on Sunday. They verified that they were indeed still holding the card. He got there at about 6:30pm Sunday - card was nowhere to be found, and the manager was not on premises nor reachable by cell phone. So on a late friday night after work I decided to stop by the restaurant to grab some good curry and roti and chicken fried rice to go. The food is great, similar to what I used to get at restaurants back home. However even after they have opened the dining section, I would not recomment you bring the family after six on any day of the week. I also recently had lunch with a couple of friends, I must say it was quiet. All conversations next door in the bar can be heard in the dining room in the evenings, there is always a couple of drunk F*** Y** that can be heard through the paper thin wall. Call ahead and place your order it takes approx. 20 minutes to get your food. The food is great I would recommend you get their roti, it is made fresh and the Fried Rice or Chowmein is Delicious, don't forget the hot sauce. Coconut Palm once know as Coconut cove and still named by the regulars as "the Cove" is a great spot for meeting the local Guyanese in and around the "Castle Hill" area. Known for having a wide selection of liquors and absolutely stunningly beautiful Puerto Rican and Dominican staff serving them to you, it is certainly a bar you'd want to visit. The bar gets a 4 stars, great service and very attentive staff. Attatched to the bar is a great new restaurant opened in 2007, for those who would preffer to eat in an atmosphere more suited for dining, the quality of the food itself, portions and tastiness could easily get 5 stars in a very "grannies kitchen" type, covering Indo carribean and Chinese- Guyanese, you'll sure to find something you like, I'd give the restaurant itself gets again 4 stars... Great for the family. During the day you'll find in the bar area regulars playing pool or "Texas hold em" and by dusk the pool table is moved and a dance floor is opened up, great selection of music for those who can really move their waist and like to dance all night long, the floor attracts people of all ages above 21. There is no official closing time to the venue it just closes when the manager decides it's time to "retire for the day". Coconut palm has a wide appeal from the food to the music a simple drink after work to a night out and dancing whatever you want the are great for all and you'll be sure to enjoy you time. My first experience tasting Guyanese food was here at Coconut Palm and it was amazing. All the flavors it was like a party in my mouth funny :) I know. So I think my favorite is the beans and rice and since I'm Hispanic I know a thing or two about that and it was great with all the seasoning man it was good. Of course Curry with Roti delicious. They have a breakfast dish called Saltfish and bake also one of my favorites. First off the five stars is for the food only. The food is outrageously good. Their bunjal duck with dal and rice is LEGENDARY!!! Their dal pouri is amongst the best. This Guyanese kitchen produces pure gastronomic bliss! This is the stuff olé granny used to make back in Leguan! However folks this place is a bar. It's often populated with the usual rummy bar flies. If you're a woman go there with other people to avoid lecherous advances and problems by the hopelessly inebriated. The young eye candy that work the bar crowd are reliably stupid. They're sure to mess up your order so make sure you double check every single item before you leave.
