If you have a normal bike, I'm sure Alki Bike and Board Shop can handle it. If you have a mildly complicated bike, definitely go there. If, however, you have a questionably overpowered long-tail cargo bike running a custom Bafang BBSHD mid-drive setup that may or may not have been engineered during a caffeine-fueled "more capability and power is always a good idea" phase... these are your people. I rolled in with what can only be described as a mechanical riddle wrapped in an enigma of wiring harnesses and torque sensors. My Bafang BBSHD setup had become inhabited by a small tribe of mean spirited electrical gremlins. I'm capable with bike mechanics, but this had gotten over my head - I was bracing for a massive bill (maybe significant part replacements). Instead, the team at Alki Bike & Board just... handled it. Calmly. Confidently. No drama. No upsell. Just pure competence. The bill was less than 1/10 what I had expected. This crew is overseen by a guy called Dayton - I'm not sure if he is more Thor or Hercules. On one hand, he seems like he could summon lightning directly into a mid-drive motor. On the other hand, he has the calm, slightly amused strength of someone who has already defeated twelve labors involving stripped bolts and cross-threaded bottom brackets. Either way, the man is operating on a different plane. He diagnosed the issues quickly, explained everything in plain English (instead of "mystical bike wizard dialect"), and fixed the whole situation for a small fraction of what I was mentally preparing to pay. I didn't believe him when he told me. Bottom line: Extremely knowledgeable Honest pricing No ego, no attitude Dayton = certified bike demi-god If you are near West Seattle and your bike needs anything beyond a gentle pat on the saddle, this is the spot. 10/10. THIS IS THE BEST BIKE STORE EVER!!! I was wanting a bike FOREVER but I had a very specific vision on what I wanted my cruiser to look like. After looking around I saw this bike (in my picture) but I was told this bike had an owner. One of the employees (I'm so sorry I forgot your name!) offered to show me what similar bikes we could order online. The manager saw this and said they had that bike in the store now and told the employee it was for sale by its previous owner. I prefer to shop local when I can and Alki Bike and Board is my "go to" bike shop in West Seattle. I've had my own mountain bike for 20 years and continue to be a Trek fan, but I have taken it to Alki Bike and board for accessories and repairs. I took my sons Trek Precaliber Suspension bike there the other day for a tune-up and they did a great job. I was wanting to update the pedals, water bottle and grips and I was really happy with the selection that they have there. The customer service is always superior and the people there take time to talk to you and understand what you're looking for, in order to best inform their recommendations. They generally get you in very quickly and do their best to get you out as soon as they can. I've considered buying a bike from them, but aren't super familiar with the brands they sell. I'm sure when I'm in the market again, I will strongly consider them. The fees that they charge are reasonable and I haven't had an occasion to see if they stand by their work, by bringing anything back to be fixed again, because they always seem to fix it correctly the first time. I was what bike stores would refer to as a "worst case scenario." I watched a few YouTube videos and thought I knew what I was doing. I disassembled an electric bike all the way down to the motor's gearing and still couldn't find the source to my problem. Julian (in the service dept) basically took my frame, wheels and 3 grocery bags of ebike parts and called me backI two days later with a fully functioning ebike, including derailleur, battery mount, brakes, electrical components, etc. completely installed and ready to go. I'm new to the biking world, I had purchased an ebike a couple weeks ago and of course I have been riding it all over town on the weekends. last weekend I drove to the ferry and cruised Vashon. It was a lot of fun. On my way back...just past Alki something seemed funny and I stop and check to see what the problem was. Sure enough, back tire is flat. Crap... what do I do now? I'm not experienced enough to fix it myself, and I don't even have the tools or accessories to do it. My buddy comes by in his truck, picks me up and we are taking it to my place but as we approach California Ave I call to see if they fix tires. They do and I arrive in about 2 minutes. The tech fixes it in about 20 minutes and I'm good to go. What a relief. I was so grateful that they were open on Sundays and basically he dropped everything to fix the tire. I recently purchased an electric bike kit (Bafang BBS02) for my mountain bike at Alki Bike and Board. It took me over a year to make the leap to an ebike, and I'm so glad that I did. My only regret is not having done it sooner, as it is RIDICULOUSLY FUN to ride an ebike! Having hit middle age, and acquiring some health issues along the way, it was hard to keep riding my bike regularly, especially on the "tired" days. Stu and his staff are really knowledgable, up-front and accommodating, and their service prices are really reasonable. If you have a minor issue they do all they can to squeeze you in for a 'while you wait' service if possible. The atmosphere is very casual and warm, no pressure at all to purchase something you didn't ask for. Simply great advice about whatever you need, whether affirming or dissuasive as needed. They'll guide you in the right direction. Totally authentic people, not snooty or pompous about biking culture. When there you typically see a large number of long-term clients stop in who they know by name and have a great relationship with. They treat first-time customers the same way. I really wanted to buy my 3 year old's birthday present here. I try to make an effort to shop local when I can so I stopped in. My daughter has asked for a pink bike and we thought we'd surprise her with one for her birthday next week. I don't know very much about child sizing and online charts seemed to suggest she's in between sizes. I was pretty excited to walk in and see a 12" pink bike as soon as I entered. However, it was like pulling teeth to try and get answers out of the employee about whether it was the right size. After probing, I was able to gather that "it would probably fit" and that she "doesn't need a fitting". Upon asking the price I was told it "probably cost $180-200". I asked if they had a 14" to look at... "no". No offer to order one if that was the size I wanted. I asked if i should measure her inseam and come back to get it and he gave me some vague answer and went back to eating his lunch. Gah! Such a painful experience! I was fully ready to drop a ridiculous amount on a child's bike to support a local business, but the experience was so frustrating that I decided I'd go home, research how to measure her myself and buy it online. I wanted to write a review for the wonderful tune up I had on my bike in March. I was a little leary at first because they upsold me to the mid range tuneup and then wanted to charge a shop fee for rags and such. I thought that was strange but, I must say, I've had two other tune-ups on this bike and this shop was the ONLY one to be able to fix my shifting problems. I feel like I have a new bike. I love these guys and this store!! They are all laid back and way cool, and, most importantly for your biking and boarding needs, they are really knowledgeable. The store is owned by a husband and wife- Stu and Gabby. They are super sweet, and Gabby even helped me find an awesome place to stay in Orcas (is that her job title?- no!). Stu is completely and utterly devoted to helping his community and is really environmentally savvy. They also promote various biking events throughout the area. I highly recommend this store for a new or used bike- I scored the fiance one here for $200- and he is 6'6"! Way to accomodate! Also, I cannot wait to rock my ski outfit from here- I got a jacket and pants for $100! Watch out on the slopes (especially once I try snowboarding-- it will be my first season at that!). Lastly, if you take the bus and want to bring your bike, they have a bus rack that you can practice on... That way, you are not nervous about your bike falling off the bus, or even about taking too long and ultimately getting run over (okay, morbid I know). I will not go back. Ever. First time: I brought my mountain bike in for service. Asked for a tune, put a little air in the shock and make sure the gears are shifting smoothly. Got the bike back, drove 80 miles to my favorite trail...the shock was soft and the gears were still way off. Day wasted. Grrrr. Second time: I brought in my old Kona with top mount Suntour shifters. Got the bike back and they had broken off the D ring on the shifter and now it would not shift. It shifted when I brought it in....they actually broke the bike. Super grrrrr. When I brought the bike back in, Stu blamed me. They eventually fixed it but the attitude was AWFUL and I never got a 'sorry!". DO NOT TAKE YOUR BIKE HERE FOR REPAIR! read more

Incredibly friendly service, but I find I'm having to check their bike repair work. For the past 3 repairs/servicings, I had some issue left behind. Once I fixed it myself, once I brought it back to them to fix, and one I just tolerated (after calling Stu's attention to it.) 6ish Month Update! The rear wheels and tires Alki B&B sent me home with have held up well over the last 6ish months of commuting and fitness rides. The tires have worn very well, and while the rear wheel has been knocked out of true from time to time by Seattle's abusive roads, it is tough as hell and hasn't gone bendy. Rear hub bearings still spin freely and seem to be holding up, so thanks guys on the recommended commuting wheel and tires. Good value pick. Fun Part! A few weeks after taking the bike in and sorting out what had gone so-so with the work done, riding it to work and back, I decided to try out some riding for speed and fitness. I put my tires up to and past the 100psi pressure level for the first time, and I immediately noticed a pulsating rub on the rear wheel. I checked the brake pads, clear; checked the true and round, fine; then checked for debris in the seat mast, found none, but noticed that my tires had sub-millimeter clearance from the seat stay top. I could barely see light! Whaaaaaaat....? Why mount a wheel and tire combo that is going to leave so little clearance when the tire is at higher pressure levels that even the finest particles of whatsit that litter the local roads can't make it through without scraping? I don't know... I get that it's an outdated race bike and not a cyclocross bike or something, but this thing wasn't going to be in the velodrome, might have checked this after installing the tire and thought it over. Seems like a professional would. So, again, head honcho seems good people, bike mechanics, eeehhhh. I have since been to other places in the area and can recommend whole heartedly Cycle University or Aaron's Bicycle Repair. read more

Decent bike and ride shop. The only thing is it doesn't have any parking. Literally. You have to sneak into Jack in the Box's or Safeway's lot just to get in there. I have taken my road bike and my snowboard in for tune ups and basic repairs and the staff is knowledgeable, friendly, patient and honest. They do great work and carry quality gear at fair prices. Stu helped me and a friend who is new to cycling. He offers FREE basic bike tune up shops by reservations. So I took him up on the offer and my friend and I rolled in at 9 am before the shop opened. Stu was there to meet us at the door and immediately took us into the bike shop area, mounted our bikes and the class was on. Justin, my friend learned more about bicycle maintenance in an hour and a half then I had learned in years of cycling. I walked away with some great new tips and we both walked away with great tuned up and clean bikes. If you are looking for a bike big box store, don't come here. Find a Super Sports Store, where the sales people may or may not partake in the sport they are trying to sell you on. If you are looking for a neighborhood shop that will tune up your Bike or Board and help you score some good gear, this is the place..... Stay West Seattle!! read more
