We had booked a private tour for his birthday to meet the rescue animals who call this beautiful place home. Yasmin met us at the entrance and, after swapping shoes for some solid boots, gave us a very honest, very real, and very important rundown of industrial agriculture. Now, I have to add, neither of us are vegan or even vegetarian, but Yasmin proved to be an actively non judgmental, compassionate host. She walked us through the grounds, addressing each animal by name, and was full of knowledge and insight! After the initial meet and greet, we were off! We hiked across the beautiful grounds and met tons of sheep (Jet loved my partner!) goats, and pigs; all of the animals roam freely, coming and going as they please. It was actually delightful how so many of the animals came up to say hi and hang out out of their own volition! We brought some grapes for the chickens and they LOVED them! But oh my god, the turkeys. Wow, just, two little friendly, fluffy orbs that floated around our party showing off while Yasmin gave us an informed and empathetic story about them. She did that at every habitat; letting us in, introducing us (by name!) to the boldest of the bunch, and explaining how they ended up at Animal Place. It was an entirely wonderful, enlightening experience. Also, fyi, turkeys are so soft. I cannot recommend this organization enough. 10/10, please give Conrad an extra treat for me!

My poor experience is specifically with the adoption coordinator at Citrus Heights Petsmart,…read moreMichelle Lee. My family and I just lost our dog to cancer and we weren't looking to adopt another pet, but happened by the cat adoptions at Petsmart while shopping for our other dog's food. We fell in love with a 2month old Scottish Fold named Artemis. We saw her once, went home to think about it, and then returned the next day to see she was still there. We inquired with the volunteer there, who told us to text the adoption coordinator, Michelle Lee. Michelle was very short over text, but encouraged us to put in an application. So we did. We still couldn't stop thinking of Artemis the next day, and we were getting more excited about what a good fit she'd be in our home. So we returned to the Petsmart to visit her. We met her foster mother, chatted, and learned more about her. The Foster mother was so lovely. She told us that adopting Artemis out had been "hard because of Michelle" then hushed as if she would get in trouble for saying even that much. Other volunteers also exchanged knowing glances. Nancy then reviewed our application, said there weren't any other suitable candidates, and encouraged us to text Michelle to set up an appointment to adopt Artemis the next day. Nancy also assured us that because our application was in, and that it was the only one, that Artemis would be on hold for us. They pulled her paperwork for us. We had every reason to believe she was on hold for us. We texted Michelle who did not respond for over an hour. So we went home. When she did text me back, she asked us to "go back adopt her." So we started to go back and then she started calling me, frantically, texting for me to answer the phone. I answered for a brief interview, answered her questions seemingly to her satisfaction, and she again, suggested she was fine with us adopting her, but she needed to call the volunteers at Citrus Heights. Ultimately she texted me back and said they would wait for a vet evaluation since she'd been sick recently and then "let me know." At no point did she indicate that we were not approved to adopt Artemis or that she would be going back on her decision for us to adopt her. The next day I sent a text asking how the vet appointment went and was ignored for two days. I sent another text and Michelle told me then that they were still deciding on a family and completely denied that she told me she was ours and to go adopt her. I pushed back and sent screenshots of our conversation and she just maintained that "there is a lot of interest" in Artemis and other volunteers "have no idea" what they're talking about. Two of my partner's decided then to visit the shelter and speak with Francie, the office manager, who I'm told was absolutely wonderful and compassionate. Shoutout to her, for being so lovely and kind. She'd arranged to have my partner's speak to Michelle in person to find out what exactly had happened. When Michelle arrived to the shelter an hour and a half past her designated shift time, she was apparently unable to be accountable and made several excuses for her behavior, including that she was over stressed and grieving a personal loss. She denied making statements she had made over text to me even when confronted with screenshots. Ultimately we learned that Michelle lied to us and had adopted Artemis out to another family. There was nothing that Francie could do to make things right. I do not recommend adopting from this agency at Citrus Heights, while Michelle is the adoptions coordinator. Please go instead directly to the shelter or to one of the other Petsmart/Petco Locations. You will be met with grief, as well as confusing, disorganized, discompassionate, behavior.

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent experience with El Dorado County Animal Services. I'm…read morecurrently a senior in high school, and for a long time now, I've been hoping to adopt a dog. I've always had a soft spot for dogs in need of loving homes, which is why I regularly visit our local animal shelter--often with my boyfriend. We started going at least twice a week, and every time I walked away thinking, "These dogs will find a home eventually." But everything changed on Saturday, August 9, 2025 about an hour before the shelter was closing. That day, I met a small puppy and instantly fell in love. I could picture myself giving this dog the loving home it deserved. I called my mom right away, and she gave me the go-ahead to adopt the puppy. Unfortunately, I quickly learned that since I'm not 18, I couldn't legally adopt the dog myself. Thankfully, my boyfriend--who is 18--was with me and agreed to adopt the dog under his name. We took our time filling out the paperwork and kept my mom updated throughout the process. Since her phone wasn't working at the time, I gave the shelter her alternate number, along with my own and my brother's--so they had multiple ways to reach us. While we were sitting down filling out the paperwork, a woman repeatedly approached us. I was on the phone with my mom at one point, and when I signaled to her that I was on a call, she just shrugged and stood directly in front of me. Her energy felt off from the start, but I tried not to read too much into it. We were told we'd get a call later in the week and could pick the puppy up on Monday, August 11. However, none of us--my mom, my boyfriend, or I--ever received a call. When Monday came, my boyfriend called the shelter before heading over to confirm he was coming to pick up the dog. That's when things got weird. He called me from the shelter and told me that the staff couldn't find our file. They claimed it had either been lost or thrown away by their supervisor. Then they said we couldn't take the dog home because he hadn't been neutered yet. I asked my boyfriend to go back in and ask whether neutering was required before adoption, since we've had a bad experience with our current dog being neutered too early. He was hesitant but went back in because he knew how much this meant to me. When he asked, they told him it was California state law that all animals adopted from a shelter must be fixed. I hadn't known that, or I wouldn't have sent him back in. He calmly explained, "My girlfriend was just upset, so I thought I'd ask," but apparently that was taken the wrong way. The staff told us we might be able to pick up the puppy on Tuesday, August 12, depending on whether or not they neutered him--but also said we might have to wait until the following week and that they'd call us. I called the shelter myself later that day and left a polite voicemail asking for a call back. When they returned my call about 20 minutes later, the woman on the phone was extremely rude. She told me that my boyfriend had come in being "very aggressive" and had "demanded the dog," which could not be further from the truth. After that, we never got another call, and the situation was just left hanging. I was really upset--I had gotten my hopes up, and I'd been wanting a dog for years. I took it as a sign that maybe this wasn't the right dog or the right time. Eventually, we found a very sweet woman on Facebook, and we were able to adopt a wonderful dog from her. But the situation with the shelter never really left my mind. Then, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, my boyfriend and I stopped by the shelter again just to visit and see the dogs, like we always used to. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was off. The staff looked at us strangely, and I had the feeling they recognized us. I tried to brush it off, but then, while I was in one of the dog rooms, the same woman from before opened the door and said, "Just wanted to let you guys know you're on camera... and that you can't be sticking your hands in the cages." I was caught off guard, but I nodded and told her I understood. I even laughed it off. But then she kept pacing back and forth past the door, and it made me feel really uncomfortable--like we were being watched closely or targeted. At that point, we just left. The whole situation made me feel judged, profiled, and betrayed. All I ever wanted to do was give that puppy a loving home. I don't know if it was because we're young or if they assumed we weren't responsible enough--but age and looks shouldn't matter when someone is trying to do something kind and life-changing for an animal. It breaks my heart that we were treated so unfairly. I've seen plenty of people come through that shelter who look far more suspicious than we did, yet they were never treated like we were. I've always found happiness visiting shelters, knowing that even a small act of kindness can brighten a dog's day--but this experience left me hurt and disappointed.
