After getting multiple quotes, Matt stood out for the best combination of experience, value, and craftsmanship. He was incredibly patient--sticking with us for nearly a year through timing delays, big decisions, the birth of our child, and City permitting hurdles. Now that we've moved on to other projects, we truly wish every contractor were as professional, skilled, timely, and collaborative as Matt. Our first project was a large fence around our steep backyard. Matt met with us and our neighbors multiple times to finalize placement and coordinated on what needed to be cleared. His team completed the fence at record speed, and the redwood blends beautifully into the forested backdrop. It looks fantastic--and our dog loves his new wonderland. The second project was a much more complex like-for-like replacement of a 30-year-old deck. Matt guided us on what to keep, what to upgrade, and walked us through material and design options. We chose TimberTech decking with a redwood and hog wire railing, and the result is stunning. The original fence was designed so the corner post was shared, making it feel balanced and intentional from all three properties. The new install prioritizes one long run and drops a post mid-span to branch off for the neighbors. It's not as clean or considered, and you can tell. To be clear, if they had simply followed the original footprint, this would have been a perfectly acceptable fence. It's sturdy. But the materials are budget and there's no craft to it, so getting the design wrong makes an already basic fence that much harder to fix. Communication was poor throughout: no response when we confirmed our availability, then two guys showed up unannounced on a day our neighbor's dog was in the backyard. There was also a 10-foot measurement error in the quote. We hired a company instead of DIY-ing because we wanted something thoughtful and neighbor-considerate. This felt like they just got the fence up and moved on, and we're the ones living with the result for the next decade.

We've had them for a…read morefew weeks now and still every time I pass through them, I applaud myself for having found FCR Fence & Deck and having had the wisdom to move forward with their company. From beginning to end the experience was great. I'd reached out to multiple companies, planning to take numerous bids, but amazingly found that few were unresponsive. FCR on the other hand was quick to respond to my inquiry on their website Contact page and were quick to set up the estimate appointment. The downside was I needed to wait two weeks. In the meantime I met the Project Manager from another company and was pleased with the experience, except that I never received a bid even though we texted several times. Rob Quinlan from FCR was similarly on time, but his amiability, professionalism, and communication, both in person and in subsequent texts, set him apart. He has excellent follow through, too, as our gates attest! He also really knows the ins and out of gates. When I said I wanted ours to be pushed open from the street side, Rob asked if we had a pool. It turns out that if one has a swimming pool, the gate legally has to swing out to the street. Rob explained that pulling a heavy gate is harder for little kids than pushing it, making it less likely they can access a backyard and drown! I was so impressed with Rob that I told him then and there that I wanted to move ahead with FCR. I received the quote and a contract later that day. It showed the options for the two different types of Redwood. Rob had explained that the photos one sees of beautiful fences are always made of the more expensive wood, from the heart of the tree. I had said that was the one I wanted, but it was still great to see options and prices laid out. I was able to sign the contract electronically. It was another two weeks before the actual installation, but the day of the work was fast and smooth. The crew and Rob arrived separately and on time. We all discussed every detail afresh, this time with Hector and Paco weighing in with their own expertise. There was some discussion among the men as to how and where to install the posts for the new double gate so that it would stay strong for the long term. I was consulted as well and made it clear that longevity and easy operation were paramount to me. I also mentioned that I was nervous about the possibility of there being a pipe to the house in that area, one that was private and therefore not marked by the utility companies. (Rob had done his company's legal duty of arranging the 8-1-1 Dig Ticket ahead of the work day). Rob took me seriously and walked out to the sidewalk, saw that there was indeed a drainage outlet there and told Hector to dig slowly and attentively. Rob left for the day and Hector and Paco got to work. Hector did find the water pipe about 12" down, right where the post was supposed to go. He had me come out and see the situation. He gave me two options: place the post over the pipe, in which case it would lack endurance for the long term, or go two feet down in the hole he had already dug closer to the house. I opted for the deep hole and the reliable fence. I was glad to have been consulted. I was grateful for Hector's having found the pipe without damaging it. Both gates and the small fence surrounding them were completed between 8am and 3pm. The areas were all cleaned up. Hector had me come out and assess the work. The gates have easy and sturdy hardware on them. They open and close with ease, swinging into the backyard as specified. They're attractive, substantial, and show every sign of enduring. I knew from the good communication that I could simply hand the check to Hector. Rob was going to come by to make sure I was happy but I said I was exceedingly pleased and insisted he didn't need to. He followed up with a text nevertheless to double check and I gave him a glowing, detailed review. Later that day I received an invoice showing I had paid. I couldn't be any happier than to have trusted this work to FCR Fence & Deck.

We visited Dolan's at both the Walnut Creek and Concord locations on two separate occasions while…read moreshopping for doors and windows. In both instances, there were multiple employees working at the front desk area on their computers. While they may have been busy, no one acknowledged or greeted us when we walked in. Even a simple "Hi, we'll be with you shortly" would have gone a long way. My wife spent about 10 minutes browsing the showroom during one visit and we still were not approached. We ultimately left both times without speaking to anyone. We understand that some showrooms operate by appointment, and if that is the standard protocol, that is perfectly fine. However, a quick greeting, asking whether we had an appointment, or offering to schedule one would have created a very different experience. We did not have this issue at Golden State Lumber or Ashby Lumber, where we were promptly acknowledged and assisted. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we will be moving forward elsewhere.

ABOVE and BEYOND. First thing I want to say is we LOVE our new pergola. We have used A & J Fencing before for a fence project and just had to have them back. A little history first. We had our fence put in about 3 years ago and it still looks amazing. From the first phone call to the TEAM at A & J till the last walk thru of our project nothing but top notch. This may sound cliche but they really made my family feel like family. Brie at the main office kept us updated with emails and phone calls to where we were at with out project. Justin was truly a professional. With our interactions with him he put our stress at ease. As you know, with any project around your home you feel somewhat vulnerable but Justin took the lead and was always available to bounce and idea or concern off of. After we decided on style and layout together A & J handled it from there. They showed up when they said they would, they worked with respect to my home and my family but most of all they delivered on all their promises even going above and beyond. The beyond part I will explain as I think it shows true character. Justin was making sure that the final touches were being taken care of and was leaving the project to sight foreman Luis. Before leaving he noticed a very suspicious individual in our neighborhood. I have two teenage daughters and wife and am very protective of them so when I heard this I had real concern. Justin stuck around till I came home and filled me in on the details. Apparently this individual was taking pics of my home from a distance and also looking into my backyard. Justin immediately got a hold of me but before this individual could leave unnoticed so he thought Justin was able to slow his progress and snap a pic of him in his car and also got his license plate number. I have several law enforcement friends and they have handled this situation to my delight. Justin and his TEAM make you feel important and are always available to listen to concerns. When we had a slight hiccup back in the day with our fence regarding sprinklers Justin had his guys fix it immediately without question and after you would have never known the difference. I would recommend his company everyday and twice on Sunday. Justin knows the meaning of true customer service and delivers a superior product. Review for A&J Fencing - Concord, CA I recently had a fence installed in my backyard in Benicia, and I couldn't be more impressed with A&J Fencing from Concord CA . From start to finish, the entire operation was outstanding. The estimator, Scott, was wonderful. When I had a question, I called him and he got right back to me, which I really appreciated. They even sent someone out to mark the area for PG&E and utilities, something PG&E told me very few fencing companies actually do. That attention to detail really stood out. When the crew arrived, they showed up right on schedule, brought excellent quality materials, and got right to work. They were polite, professional, very hardworking, and true craftsmen. The job went up seamlessly. One thing I found especially impressive is that A&J mills their own wood. The redwood and pressure-treated lumber they used was top-notch, and the quality really shows in the finished fence. The crew even mounded the concrete at the base of the posts to divert water away. Everything was done with careful attention to detail. The board-on-board design they built is absolutely beautiful, incredibly strong, and went up seamlessly in no time. When the job was finished, the site was spotless, actually cleaner than before they started which really shows their pride in their work. I'd also like to thank Vanessa in the office for keeping me updated on the schedule and letting me know exactly when the crew would arrive. She was friendly, helpful, and made the process smooth from beginning to end. The price was very reasonable, and the workmanship far exceeded my expectations. I usually don't post my experiences on websites, but felt the need to share my experience with A &J Fencing after reading other, what i feel are not accurate, descriptions of this company. I recommend to anyone looking to invest in a new fence to do your homework on the company and know the different quality of products used in fencing. I received a few estimates from other local companies and was very pleased that all of them were very knowledgeable and professional. I felt most comfortable with A & J Fencing after going to their showroom and seeing and touching the style fence that i was interested in prior to purchasing it. They showed me the different types of lumber used in fencing and that helped educate me on my investment. I chose A&J Fencing to build all of my surrounding fences. Prior to the start of the job, the head foreman and i walked the fence lines to make sure that we were all on the same page. He was very accommodating to my special needs as i had a few pipes below one of my fences that i share with my neighbor. All of the workers worked very hard all day and made sure to steer clear of the pipes below my fence. Upon completion of the job, my neighbors and i walked the new fence lines with the foreman and we were all very pleased. The quality was top of the line. The fence boards used were much thicker than our older ones; the 2x4's that this company uses are 16' long which, in my opinion adds a much nicer looking touch. On top of that we got a 15 year written warranty. I am a local small business owner and hold other companies to similarly high standards as my own. I was very pleased with the quality of my fence, the quality of the customer service and the final outcome of my fences. A&J has twice built fences for our yard and both times their work has been fantastic. In Martinez the bedrock is very hard and they do the extra digging to insure fence posts will last. They built beautiful picture frame style across the back which climbs up a hill, and they had to build it in front of the neighbors' existing fence for one section. The continuity was seamless. They built a board on board with con-common (our choice to keep price down for neighbor) down one side and it looks as good as it gets. They are very organized and can take out the old and bring in the new like poetry in action. They make every effort to preserve surrounding plants and will take out ivy growing on the old fence so you don't have to. They clean up COMPLETELY afterwards. I do not understand the 4 poor ratings given previously. I think it may be a matter of the home-owners' lack of responsibility in learning and being clear on what the options are, what the different costs cover, how the work will be done, etc. If you want the price down, you may have agreed to con-common instead of con-heart redwood. They wouldn't just show up with con-common without going over that with you. Gates are very expensive; if you asked them to get the price down you may have gotten what you paid for. There's no way that A&J didn't go over every detail on the FINAL proposal so that there would be no confusion on what was going to be done with what quality of materials, etc. You should do your homework and get three bids so you really know what the comparisons are. As for using Latinos to do the work, I had no problem communicating with them (especially the foreman who spoke perfect English) and their work together was very well orchestrated with outstanding results. read more

After reading through the reviews I decided to share my experience with A & J fencing, started three years ago with a small fence job, they came as scheduled gave me a quote and I as most had several bids for the same job. Decided to go with A & J based on cost and initial meeting with the rep. Scheduled the job and everything went as planned. Last year decided to have a large deck replaced, again same process and this time the J in a and j fencing came to give me a quote on the deck rebuild, kind of surprised that the owner came out and was doing the bid but was pleased that he was actually involved in the work. He was the project manager for my deck and was here everyday several times through the day to go over things with me. And course correct any things that weren't to my liking. There were some things along the way that I was not pleased with but all I did was point them out and they were fixed or replaced the next day ( I probably had them replace 20 if not more boards through out the process based on scratches and or dings caused by the crew or natural causes ). Even as a year has gone by I had an issue with one of the boards and called to ask if they could fix or repair and low and behold they sent a guy out to fix. Not the next day but in a reasonable time frame. After reading some reviews about clean up and debri, I must say. I am surprised, to hear it. This is construction there will be things left and or damaged ( stepped on flowers ) as the homeowner yes I went and picked up random nails and the like but that is not uncommon and I must say pretty much expected with ANY construction job. We highly recommend using A&J Fencing for your fencing needs! Proof is in the finished project. Our shared 6' 4", stained con-heart fence is extremely sturdy with 4x6 posts, bottom base 12" brown-stained pressurized kick plates, alternating 5' foot interior boards and standard rail tops. A&J uses a thicker non-planed redwood that adds to a sturdier look! Our project involved 3 neighbors. We had the opportunity to observe and interact with a significant number of crew members. Everyone worked very hard, smiled on the job, showed up on time, cleaned up at day's end and demonstrated a real understanding and execution of proper fence building. You can rest assured that your fence will be done right. For our shared fence, we were both "extremely picky" customers about the details. Suggested changes were understood and instantly performed. You engineers out there will be satisfied! However, nothing is perfect! We had a very difficult tear out with a plan to preserve the existing foliage. Once getting into the project (previous fence was completely imbedded and broken inside a 50 foot bank of ivy), we discovered it to be impossible to do. A&J VP, Gary, stood by their commitment to make the job right. At added expense on their end, they did what it took. And it took quite a bit. You cannot ask for more! We compared A&J with 3 other fence companies before accepting the proposal. Their pricing was in the middle. But the knowledge conveyed during the estimation process stood out as a Company that knew their stuff and would make the job perfect el mundo! They did! We love our new pergolas! When our fence blew down in a storm six years ago, we had A&J come out to replace it, all 150 feet of it. A crew of about 9 guys came and did the entire thing in a single day! They did a great job and we were amazed how quickly they got it done. So when it came time to remodel our backyard / pool area in April 2014, A&J was the first (and only) fencing company I called. The entire process was completely pain free. James came out exactly at the scheduled time, and walked the job with us. We discussed the project, and he offered his suggestions. He left us with a very reasonable bid on a pretty large project, and we said "go for it!" A couple weeks later, Luis and his crew (three total) showed up at the agreed upon date and time, and began the project. James came by frequently during the job to make sure everything was going well, and that I was happy with the job. Four days later, we had three beautiful new redwood structures in our backyard! We couldn't believe how fast these three guys knocked it out. We absolutely love our new pergolas! The "outdoor room" (17' x 31') area outside our sliding glass door has become the default gathering spot for our family, thanks to the wonderful service and crew of A & J Fencing! My neighbor and I shared a neighborhood fence, board over board. We were both satisfied with the quality and price when it was built on !0/06/2025. The estimator, Rodolfo, came by over a month ago for an estimate. We had a 70 year old fence broken down and covered with thick roots and tree vines. Several trees and roots had to be cut down, which we finally had done by some local workers. Afterwards, Rodolfo, came back and said we could proceed with the fence. During the times Rodolfo came by he was very very friendly, answered all questions, and gave us confidence in A@J Fence. On the day of erection of the fence the crew members were friendly and profesional. The crew leader, Luis, called by some people as Rambo , was fantastic. I went out several times to ask questions while the fence was being built and he made a few changes at my request, always with a smile. I should remark that there were some tree stumps and roots that the local workers did not get down to ground level before A@J came out. Without complaint the A@J crew cleared them out. Finally, there was one surprise. The gate quotes were so reasonable I did not expect much. I was flabbergasted when they were made and installed. Exceptional. Very very sturdy. I am writing this review to give anyone needing a fence or retaining wall my highest recommendation for using A & J Fencing to build it! I could not be more pleased with my entire experience with this professional company from beginning to end. I believe they are truly stand outs in this field as quality builders and at a great price. I must say I have never quite seen anything like the way this incredibly efficient crew worked and I was both amazed and impressed. My job was to remove an existing fence and retaining wall that was 65 ft in length and 9 foot tall and then to rebuild it. A BIG job! The crew arrived at my home at 7:50am and to my amazement the entire job was absolutely totally completed at 2:15pm!!!!!! I was ( and still am for that matter ) blown away!!! The foremen and crew were professional, courteous, hard working, efficient, FAST, responsive, accommodating and did a fabulous job. Just had A and J fence do another job for me. Fantastic experience. Exceptional quality of wood and workmanship. I am a stickler on having people I hire being punctual on their appointments. The Equipment and Men showed up 5 minutes early. To me that is a bonus in this day and age with contractors. Everyone was courteous and introduced themselves. They walked the job with me and got all the details needed. They went straight to work. Like a professional machine. My old fence was removed quickly and loaded on their truck. Very tidy, well organized keeping care of my landscaped yard. They set my posts and quickly started to assemble my board on board fence. Their quality of Con Heart redwood is unbeatable. They made me a custom metal framed gate with a board on board arch that is extremely an added bit of detail that makes gate look very elegant. A & J Fencing My neighbor and I needed A fence so we looked around for the best deal that we could find for the materials to build the fence. So I can testify to the price and quality of the materials by this company. Before you buy anything from anyone take your time and check things out. If you compare there materials and prices to other companies you will see that A&J'S Are the best I am so surprised at the poor reviews on Yelp. I think that everyone there works hard at providing satisfaction to their customers throughout the whole sales and approval process. From the yard man who took us into the yard to show and tell us about the lumber that we needed. He listened to us about what we needed. (No one takes the time to listen any more) All the lady's in the office were great with being very patient with us. We only chance the invoice about 4 times to get things right. Our mistakes not theres. The delivery man was great he put the material where we asked also was on time. At one point there was some miscommunication between myself and one of the girls. With Justin's help it was taken care of. After everything was said and done I think that the mistake must've been on my side because she treats me great. read more

Our low backyard deck needed replacement. The prior owners installed the old deck with stringers so far apart it was like walking on a trampoline. It was becoming dangerous. We met Gary Harrington, V.P. at a home and garden show in Concord this spring. He was personable and knowledgeable. The sample Timbertech deck installed there was appealing and warranted more investigation. After having done so, we solicited a bid from A & J Fencing. Gary was the principal who came out. That was good since we already had a good impression of him and his friendly, forthright approach. The bid was reasonable, but the best part was that they could start in a few days and have the removal and installation of a new deck done in 2 days. We accepted the bid and now have a new Timbertech deck that is handsome and very well constructed. Just in time for entertaining 60 people in the next 2 days. I highly recommend A & J Fencing for any deck jobs you have. The workmen were very precise, professional, friendly, did a good job of clean-up and left us with a very sturdy, beautiful deck with perfect 45 degree angle cut joint butts at the corners. Fenced in my property in Orinda with redwood + hogwire fencing from A & J and couldn't be happier with the results. We're on a hill so going down the sides was complicated in terms of setting up all of the step-down fence panes for the hogwire but they nailed it. I also had them add retaining walls in several areas. Finally, they welded, powder-coated and installed a driveway gate to our design specifications. Sammy was our sales representative and he was honest, a clear communicator, and very thorough in terms of making sure he understood exactly what I wanted in each section of the property. The crew leads were Mario Figueroa, Iguana, and Pedro and everyone that was on our property was professional and respectful on top of the amazing and very fast work they did. They also weren't shy about double-checking in critical places to make sure they were getting it exactly right and avoiding any issues or re-work. Omar, Roger and Alex did a superb job. They arrived on time ready to start the job. They walked us through the contract and made sure we were knew what they were going to do. They spent the time necessary to repair and replace a portion of a damaged fence as well as build a new gate. We had our gate replaced a couple of years ago by another company and it was heavy and dragged once the ground started to shift. It was repaired, but never really worked. We decided we were not going to waste time and called A&J. Roger came up with a solution that works. He narrowed the gate and put in steel posts to minimize the movement. He made the gate strong enough to satisfy my husband and easy for me (at 5' 1") to open. Our thanks also go out to Corey (sales rep) who assured us the team would do the job right. Just had my fence completed this week. So far so good. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Definitely not the cheapest around but I generally think you get what you pay for and A&J is no exception. Little details like hand built lattice instead of that thin, pre-assembled cheap stuff that's stapled together and just falls apart after a short time. Also, after pouring the footings for the posts, they put rounded cement caps so water runs off and doesn't pool up at the base of the posts. The gates feel very solid as well. They are heavy but not difficult at to open or shut at all. The crew of Carlos, Eddie, Enrique, and Enrich (might have the name/spelling slightly off) were fantastic. They made sure to check in with me throughout the job to make sure all of the details were clear and to make sure I was happy with their work. There might be things that break, warp, etc in the near future but I have no doubt that A&J will take care of them if needed and stand behind their quality work. read more

Solid company! A&J replaced my fence that was built only 6 years ago by a company that is supposed to be All American??? The gate was never done correctly and it seems as if the rest of the fence was falling apart. I was under the impression that redwood fences last for at least 15 years. Not mine! I usually look in the 5 diamonds book to find out who the most reputable companies are and go from there. Justin the owner came out to my home (on time I might add) dressed professionally and gave me an estimate. After our conversation about the work that needed to be done he told me that a formal bid would be given to me within 2 business days. I received the bid and was satisfied with the offer. The fence was then put up in one day and looks fantastic. I have had numerous compliments from neighbors about how much better my home looks with the new fence. A&J completed a 6' x 44' privacy fence (board on board) using construction grade redwood, 4x6 posts, 1x4' top and bottom border and 2 x 12" kick plates. The crew foreman (Mario? Marco?) was a real pleasure to deal with. Very professional-- explained everything, asked questions when he needed clarification, and suggested options. I shared the cost with my neighbor who wasn't the most friendly person shall we say, but the A&J crew handled it all with ease. Compared to their direct competition fencing contractor*, the crew was only 3 men. They didn't take over my yard or cop an attitude, they didn't litter, they cleaned up everything as they went and even helped me by modifying my side of the fence to prevent the neighbors dogs from digging underneath. Even better, he didn't charge me for the modification! (*I used their competition for a 60' length of fence of similar style on my other property border) Overall, a very positive experience! Our new home is old, especially the fencing. After getting three bids, we selected A & J Fencing in Concord. They were not the least expensive, but they were closer to the low end of the bids we got, and we had checked out their work in the neighborhood and it looked really good. Of course, the transition from a forty-year-old, falling down, breaking apart, bleached-out fence to a new beautiful one is shocking, but that's not the only reason we give A & J five stars. They showed up on time, worked diligently for two days to project completion, checked with us along the way to confirm our order, made sure to clean up after themselves, and were professional and gracious the whole time. I requested a quote from IVS for a large fence project and it was a bit difficult to iron out the…read moredetails with IVS. Ignacio, who came for the site visit and identified himself as the owner, was very easy to communicate with both in person and over the phone. However, Jackie, (not clear to me if she's the co-owner or Ignacio's wife) finalizes pricing and pretty much runs the show. For our project, we had picked IVS to do the work, but the price kept increasing by thousands of dollars. I asked to speak with Ignacio since these changes were inconsistent with what I discussed with him and put them week above our other quotes, but Jackie said that's not necessary since she decides the pricing. They also charge tax on materials, which no other fencers do (since they're already paying tax to Home Depot, etc.). These business practices felt disingenuous to me and like bait and switch. I've had issues in the past with businesses like this that once the work begins they'll change order you again and ask for more money. So we did not use them. For this fence, we received multiple quotes. Two companies were in the $9-10K range and IVS was around $12K. All were licensed and bonded. We went with the lowest quote and are extremely happy with our fence.
