We give Duce the highest recommendation. It was time for us to replace an old wooden fence. We live in the Berkeley Hills it was also time to install an alternative to wood (for fire safety). After doing some research, including a neighbor's recommendation, we found Duce. They did a great job for us. Susan was professional throughout the process, from planning to installation. And she or Kayla returned our calls in a timely fashion. The crew was hard working and they worked quickly. They left the site very neat. They were done in 3 days. At the time they did the job Duce used Knotwood aluminum fencing. Knotwood offers a wide range of colors to choose from. And compared to the company our neighbors used, it shipped the material much more quickly. We wanted the fence to look like the fence we were replacing and we couldn't be happier. Showing how Susan takes care of her customers, we requested a small change. She took care of this without any additional charges. As far as cost goes, metal fencing can cost a lot more than wood. From talking to other neighbors who installed metal fences, I'd say Susan offers competitive pricing. One more positive about aluminum fencing is it's going to last a long time. read more

Have you ever tried to get an aluminum fence installed? I have and let me tell you, it's far more challenging than it has any right to be. It took me months to find providers that would install an aluminum fence and even longer to find one that would install a fence we actually liked. Susan came out, gave a prompt quote and also quoted on a smaller job for us. The price wasn't cheap - I was definitely used to the pricing on wood fences - but was in the range I expected. It took about 6wks because of the lead time on getting the materials, but installation was quick, and they knocked out 2 fences with gates and 1 extra gate on a barbed wire fence as well. They were pleasure to deal with, extremely professional and the fence looks great. When I had a couple minor fixes, they came back out promptly, made the fixes without hesitation, and I've had 0 issues with the fences/gates since installation. Overall I'm very happy with the results and highly recommend Duce Construction. I needed a huge section of my fence replaced due to damage from a fallen tree during the storms this summer. Luckily my fence looks directly into a bat street and Duce offered me a huge discount due to the traffic exposed to the fence work. James came out to provide an estimate on a Saturday and everything went well with his timely arrival, etc. This was in late August. He apparently left out a section of fence (right in the middle, connecting the fence to the house), which is strange. I didn't find out until months later (late October) when Susan came out to provide a new estimate. I wasn't very happy to add $725 to the already whopping $6500 original estimate, but Susan called me back to explain that I was getting a great deal still. This sounded right, as I had gotten other estimates that were more than $1500 more (though I couldn't remember for sure two full months after having signed the original estimate/agreement and threw the others out. Once the crew started work in November everything went smoothly and they finished within a few days. Susan took time to explain what to expect every step of the way, which I appreciated. Once the crew was done, I went to check and everything looked beautiful. In fact, a neighbor walked by while I was picking up garbage around it and commented how nice the new fence looked. The crew left a bunch of equipment and giant cement debris too heavy for me to lift/throw away. I let Susan know and they came by the next day to take care of it. Other than the hiccup with the original estimate and the cleanup afterwards, the work was excellent, as was their price and Susan was amazing to work with. read more

The crew showed up on time and our two fences were up and done within hours. The fences look good but customer service is not so good. I've reached out to Susan four times since April 2023 when they replaced our fences. Since then there has been one board with a gaping hole/open crack that I have to stare at all day, into my neighbors yard. Why even install that board? In April she said someone will come out. In May she said I'm on her list and she'll send someone to replace it. In December she reminded me that wood naturally cracks and tried to blame it on the environment, although it was installed cracked.. she also stated that it's the end of the year and she'll put me on their schedule for January. Knowing her exceptional commitment to customer care, I texted her again mid January and this time no response. Mind you, I'm not being rude or anything I'm simply asking when we can schedule a time. The way I see it, she got her money and doesn't care about customer satisfaction or for return customers for that matter, since we have 4 more older fences on the property. I would not recommend this business for this reason. What a shame for a family owned business. read more

I would not hire this company to put in a fence because basic project management is absent. In brief my neighbor was putting in a new talker fence and, because that made my fence unsightly from my side, I agreed to have it taken out. I was told by my neighbor my only inconvenience would be the sound of hammering. Unbeknownst to me, the Duce project manager had planned to operate out of my back yard. When she stopped by the morning of their project it was to "look at my fence" and she indicated they would take down my fence and load the materials on a truck they would park out front. No one indicated that all the wood & the equipment would be unloaded in my yard, that my electricity would be used, that my plants - not the neighbor's - would be crushed, shrubs and irrigation broken and that trash would be left behind in my yard. When I called the company and was connected to the project manager she said "Oh yes, there are always problems with neighbors who share a fenceline. I bet there are with this company! Good project managers know that communication is everything. read more

We hired Duce Construction to replace about 150 feet of wood fencing and build 28 feet of aluminum fencing hear the house, to meet new guidelines requiring non-flammable fencing near homes. Duce did an outstanding job on the wood fencing, using three different styles, all of which are sturdy and attractive. They were the only fencing company, of five that I contacted, that was willing to learn how to install the aluminum fencing product I selected (Knotwood is the vendor). The crew learned the new product quickly and did a fine job with this new product. Duce was pleasant to work with and the crew was both efficient and quality-conscious. We had our 9 foot fence blow down in a recent storm. Unfortunately, this fence was between us and a very public canal walkway. Duce Construction was the second company we called. Right away, Susan Duce beat the competition by saying "You are going to need a retaining wall so the new fence will last longer". (I had to suggest the retaining wall to the previous bidder) The Duce Construction price was also better. They scheduled me for the following week and came and got the job done in two days (56 feet of fence with retaining wall). The retaining wall design used posts every four feet. (The taller posts for the fence were 8 feet apart.) Their work was excellent and the fence looks so good that I enjoy looking at it every day. In addition, Susan noticed that an adjacent fence had weak posts and was able to ADD posts to improve the longevity of the other fence. One note. Many fence builders will dig the hole, then put in the post, then pour in the dry cement, and then add water to it afterward. I called the maker of the cement who said this is a very bad idea. It will lead to cement that feels properly hardened on the surface but will be brittle and have a much shorter lifespan. In addition, using fresh water from a hose instead of letting ground water hydrate the cement will prevent impurities from further weakening the casting. At my request, Duce Construction mixed the cement for me before pouring it into the post holes. Please be sure to insist on properly pre-mixed cement no matter who makes your fence. I would not hesitate to call Duce Construction again. read more

Hiring Duce Construction Deck & Fence was a great decision. Alex, the foreman, and his crew did a fantastic job, from start to finish! I submitted a request for a quote from Duce Construction Deck & Fence thru their website. I received a quick response and an appointment with Susan Duce. She was on time and prepared, including a 300 ft. tape measure. My project was considerably smaller than the tape measure required, yet she gave my project her full attention. She surveyed the work we needed, a fence section, including its footing/retaining wall from fire damage on one side of my house and a Gate rebuild/replacement on the other side. The original Gate was poorly made and failed in part because the anchor posts were not seated securely in cement. Susan explained the proper way to build the gate was to anchor the posts on either side of the Gate opening in cement; she also recommended additional support by building an Arbor overhead to bridge the anchor posts to better secure the fence in place. She suggested a few options for a decorative pattern including the piano key lattice, which I chose and am happy I did. The simple piano key design compliments the style of fence bordering my property. It added interest and fit right in without being too ornate. It is attractive but primarily adds long-term stability to the structure so that my beautiful new gate will last for many years to come. Each time my husband goes thru the gate he says, "That is a damn good-looking Gate!" and comments on how smoothly the gate latch works. I have contacted Duce Construction to estimate repair of two fences at my house. Susan came out to our house within a couple of days. She came in a mask and we discussed all the details of what we wanted done. She gave advice and options without pushing me in any direction. The estimate document came within a day. There was a clear drawing of where the fences were with a breakdown of different parts of the job and alternatives. It was easy to go with the estimate to neighbors with whom we share a fence. There was also an estimate on the job start and duration. Once the job has started the crew worked very fast. The work was done within two days (estimated 2-3). The fences are very solid and beautiful. Communication was extremely easy. We used texts to go back and forth. Susan was quick on responses and I was always happy with the attitude. After the job was done I wanted to move the lock on the gate they replaced. Someone came out within few days and fixed it the way I wanted. I recommend Duce to anyone with fence related needs. Overall, decent job and fast, but questionable quality and value. This was completed back in the end of August. I was contacting their company through James on email and it was sometimes very slow to respond. Two times was 2 days and two times took 5 days. Much better contact with Susan. I was told it took longer due to some kind of hard stone in the ground. The guy needed an outlet from inside the house and didn't wear a mask with close communication. The fence is solid so far and looked good in the beginning. Some nails were installed crooked. After a month some of the wood looked a bit brittle before I put on some protectant. Not sure how normal that is. I tried to get in touch with someone I was referred to, to coat the fence, and that took a while too and appeared there wasn't much communication on their end. Care and cleanliness: The plants took some trauma near my fence. But two nails found on the floor, a piece of wood left on a box of mine, and some little scraps. Don't know if it is common but a bunch of dirt and rocks left from digging. The old from the fence was left on one of my plants in the front yard. Took them a little longer to pick up my debris because of a flat on their trailer. After all is said and done, I felt it was a little pricey for what I got. I wouldn't recommend them for a quality clean job, but definitely faster. read more

We had to extend our fence. Duce Construction responded to our estimate inquiry right away. Due to the pandemic and many people were doing home improvement projects, Duce told us that they could not start our project until two months later. However, when one of their other projects was cancelled, they moved us up right away. Our fence project went on-and-off for five days (because things had to set). During the course of the project, the owners of Duce Construction came by to check on progress every day. They maintained open communication to let us know what we should expect on that particular day. We had to do a change order and the owners were very understanding of the situation. Their workers were polite, and they cleaned up after themselves. They also maintained the COVID protocol. Duce Construction was very easy to work with. I would recommend them to anyone. read more

This is an excellent fencing company.  We had a very old fence that was falling down and needed to be replaced.  We called Duce and a few other companies.  They gave us some choices on how the new fence could be constructed and provided us with a reasonable and competitive quote. Here's how they went the extra mile. We share the fence with a neighbor who had very different opinions on how to replace the fence including trying to replace more than just our shared fence, which would have brought in other neighbors. Duce spoke to him multiple times to resolve the work for the fence and helped us reach a consensus with the neighbor on how to proceed. This was by far not an easy task because our neighbor had different priorities and a different timeline than we had. I highly recommend Duce.
