We drove stopped here for lunch on way from Boulder to Steamboat Springs. I love smoked BBQ so I was looking forward to trying their food. We arrived around 1 p.m. and was told that they had run out of brisket. They put another one in the smoker but it would be awhile before it was ready. So I ordered the pulled pork and baked beans. The pulled pork was good, not great. However, the baked beans were outstanding. Overall, a very good meal. Just wish I had a chance to taste the brisket. read more

Larry and his crew cook up some amazing bbq. The restaurant takes up the space once held by the second bank in Weldon, and the vault is still there for viewing. Really, this should not be a five star review. However, the lack of any higher star ratings means I can only give five stars. The brisket was so tender and juicy that it almost fell apart on the fork. The chicken was also surprisingly tender and moist. The sides were extraordinary, with the Mac and cheese and the potato salad being our favorites. The bbq sauce was a Texas-style sauce with just the right amount of sweetness. The food alone would have earned five stars, but Larry and his team did such a great job of taking care of us that they deserve even more stars. Their friendly engagement despite the rush started when we walked in and continued until we left. It felt like eating with friends we haven't seen in a while, and it added a lot to the meal. I love the food here! Had Larry do my daughter's wedding reception everyone was raving! To me it is the jewel of Walden.

I have not written a review since before Covid tormented the world. I thought I would go out of my review retirement and tell you that this is one of the best barbecue restaurant in the world. Wow! What a find in the tiny town of Walden. This has replaced the previous Moose Creek Cafe, and this the best BBQ you'll find in Colorado. The smoker chef is a former BBQ competitor who learned his craft in Wichita, KS. The meat is tender and full of flavor. The beans, coleslaw and potato salad as good as my mom makes (and that's hard to do!). The place is rustic and small--you get your own drinks at the fountain on the way in. The guy is a character--it's very homey--he talks to all the patrons at once. It's slow food style. Don't be in a hurry. It's worth the wait. Two stars, only because the brisket was very tasty, and the cornbread was some of the best I've had. Otherwise it would be one star. Brisket - moist and perfectly cooked, although I thought it was kind of weird that they slather it in bbq sauce before they give it to you.. most places let you sauce it yourself. Pulled pork - dry and flavorless, despite being slathered in sauce. Ribs - they didn't have any, even though it was lunchtime on a Saturday. Mac n cheese - disgusting. Was definitely velveeta box Mac n cheese, except cold. Baked beans - just your average canned baked beans. Potato salad - tasted like the tub of potato salad you get from Walmart. Cornbread - delicious. Soft, fluffy, not too sweet. ----------- Dining room - badly decorated but clean enough. Prices - Outrageous. We paid $17 for my husband's two meat plate which consisted of two tiny sides, a small helping of pulled pork, and three little pieces of brisket. All in all we paid $32 for a stingy amount of food and no drinks. In conclusion, avoid this place unless you like to pay outrageous prices for mediocre food, or if you plan to eat only brisket and cornbread. read more

The ribs, if you're lucky enough to get them, is done perfectly, tender, fall-off the bone goodness!!! My girlfriend and I drove from Cody, Wyoming to Kremmling, CO the other day, and on the way was this absolutely AWESOME barbecue joint. I am a huge fan of barbecue, and I tend to be a pretty harsh critic. I got the two meat plate with brisket, pulled pork, Mac n cheese, and potato salad and my girlfriend got a two meat plate with brisket, ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw. First, the brisket is superb. This ranks among the best brisket I've ever had, and the house BBQ sauce just makes it even better. We couldn't get enough. The baked beans were top 2 that I've ever tried. The coleslaw was exceptionally addictive--I wish I would have had a tub or it. The Mac n cheese and the potato salad were also really fantastic. The ribs were very tasty with plenty of meat. Very very good. The pulled pork was darn good too. To top it off, Larry (the owner) was very personable. He said "nobody leaves hungry" which I thought was a great motto. We stayed to chat with him a bit because he was such a cool guy. The service was fantastic, the place is clean and has a cool vibe, and the food of course is just amazing. Best BBQ chicken we ever had, moist and flavorful, best BBQ sauce and green chili. We got there almost at closing time to receive the kindest attention from the owner. Corn bread tasted like heaven. Best BBQ in Colorado! Stopped by when they opened in the morning but they didn't have the ribs ready yet, so we decided to come back later. When we returned, the shop was closed. Luckily the owner Larry was sitting out front and was more than accommodating! He welcomed us in, and offered us what meat he had left as well as a drink. Larry told us there was some brisket and pulled pork left, and we can have any of the sides that were cold (ie coleslaw, or potato salad). Little did we know we were getting a full meal! Truly some of the best BBQ we have had in Colorado. Considering it was the "leftovers" from the day, the meat was perfectly cooked and very fresh. We got baked beans, potato salad and mac n cheese which were also amazing. He let us sit on their patio and even welcomed our dog to sit with us. We sat and had amazing conversation with Larry and his friend Doug. We had such a great experience here, and will be returning again. read more
