What is good is really good; what isn't good... isn't so good. Overall, it's a great BBQ place in Winter Park that I would visit again, with some adjustments. I think portions are the real win. I felt like we got a great amount of food for the price--we weren't skimped on like some BBQ places! When considering the premium of Winter Park, this felt more on the reasonable/expected side. Brisket was cooked perfectly, and the sauce complimented it well (we tried them all!). The pulled pork was very dry and not good. The included coleslaw was good: not too watery or vinegary. The beans were not good (I know another reviewer loved them). To my tastes, they were a bit crunchy and felt like something was wrong with them. Overall, just a bit thick and off-putting. The mac and cheese was amazing and just what we loved. It was very peppery, which suited us well. The corn bread was very sweet and a bit moist in a weird way (like it was sweating). Home of the best baked beans I've ever had in my life. The pulled pork was smoky and delicious. The brisket was alright. I was disappointed by the Carolina barbecue sauce. Excellent BBQ, sauces, sides AND margaritas! We're here in WP for three weeks. This is our second visit to The Smokehouse in the last 10 days. The first time we were disappointed upon arrival when they were out of burnt ends. We're from KCMO and we judge a town's BBQ by their burnt ends. Nonetheless, the brisket, sauces and sides were enough to warrant a second visit. Oh, and that house margarita...chef's kiss! Just what a tired ass mom needs after a long day of "hey moms." On the second visit, I went early at 4PM and ordered carryout. AND a margarita while I waited! The margarita is simple, the perfect size and made with all fresh ingredients. It rivals more notable ones around town. This time, they had ALL the burnt ends and boy, were they worth the wait! I got a one meat platter with burnt ends, collards and Mac n cheese. My husband got a two meat platter with burnt ends, brisket, beans and slaw. We got KC and Texas sauces (they have 5 or 6 to choose from, all inspired by different BBQ regions in the US). Both platters came with cornbread which is the only thing that needs some work IMHO. It's small, dry and not worthy of the calories. But EVERYTHING else was soooo good! Fatty, juicy, flavorful meats. Balanced sauces. And delicious sides! The Mac, collards and beans get an A+, the slaw is a solid B. Service was great on both visits. Friendly, efficient and fast! One thing to note is they have an adorable patio. I've not eaten out there yet but it's well maintained with lots of flowers and good coverage from the sun. Great barbecue with many sauce options! The KC and Bama Bbq sauces were my personal favorites. I had the burnt end sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Very creamy with a good balance of pepper in that mac. The spot was fun and had a dead head vibe if you like Grateful Dead you will appreciate the decor. Prices on par for a mountain town lunch spot. I would give Smokehouse BBQ 3.75 stars. You order at the counter and seat/bus yourself which I find common with BBBQ restaurants. The decor is on par with similar restaurants. Staff was friendly but you have limited interactions with them. The sides (Mac and cheese, potato salad, and fries) were the highlight in my opinion and were flavorful. Meat was just okay and a little dry for me. The cornbread was also dry and lacking "corn" taste so I didn't bother eating it. Probably would not return in the future. read more

Gave it a try. It was good. Brisket and Potato salad was good and large serving that is enough for at least 2 people. Mac and cheese is creamy and large serving as well. At first our group of 4 thought that since we arrived at 3:30 PM on a Thursday to eat we caught the friendly, happy staff at a natural break time with the house music turned up a lot. There was only one other table of 4 in the place. The food was ordered and arrived quickly, drinks were fine. Surely the smoker was about ready to turn out the day's fresh offerings, right? There was no reason to expect this place in a Colorado ski town to be like a Southern BBQ Mecca, but boy, were we underwhelmed! Got the sample platter-each of the 6 meat offerings was cold and dry - yesterday's leftovers, without a doubt. The ribs and burnt ends were hard. Why the cook thought the platters acceptable to leave the kitchen was beyond reason. The sides, usually the pride of a BBQ restaurant, were almost up to average. The potato salad and cole slaw were on level with the Safeway deli (bland and watery-and likely purchased there), the beans and Mac n cheese were better, but also cold. Corn was soggy. The workers where amazing. Really great service and super nice people who led us in the right direction by not letting us order more that we needless. The restaurant was also nice to hang out at.. beautiful weather and outside porch. We really enjoyed hanging out here for the afternoon. The food was not my favorite it just fell a little short for me. The burnt ends where super fatty and not at all that "crispy glazed" texture that they usually are. We got takeout. We had the brisket (tender and delicious, but not a lot of smoke), chicken (a little overcooked and tough), turkey (great smoke taste) and pulled pork (juicy and my favorite). We also had the mac and cheese (the kids said it was too creamy, but I liked it), baked beans (favorite of the group), potato salad (very good) and slaw (great on the pulled pork). Not many restaurants open between seasons but for our late season ski trip we came to Winter Park. FAST review Food: we ordered and split a half rack of baby back ribs and a pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were tender but not much season on them. The pulled pork was cooked well but bland. Luckily they have 4 BBQ sauces on the table to make up for lack of flavor. The steak fries, corn bread and side of pickles were just ok. I'll save the best part of the meal for the tip. Atmosphere: lots of high tops and great music playing. Unfortunately the music kept stopping and starting for most of the time we're seated, seems like they may have fixed it by the time we left. First time to Winter Park and have already been twice in four days. It's right around the corner from the condo and knowing the food was amazing we went back again! Had the brisket, pulled pork and the rack of ribs. Very good smoke flavor on all meats, the pulled pork was succulent, the brisket was very tasty but drier than the pork (a lil' sauce fixes that right up) and the Pork ribs were amazingly moist with superb flavor. The coleslaw, mac n cheese, and collard greens with bacon( greens a little on the salty side for me but nonetheless very tasty)- are all great too. ( Mac n cheese especially!) They provide quite a collection of sauces: our favorites were the blue bottle, orange bottle and a lil' yellow bottle mixed in. The point is they are all delicious and you can get creative being your own BBQ sauce mixologist! The cocktails were nice as well! Had the margaritas but they also have quite a whiskey selection and whiskey drinks that look quite tasty. The service was super efficient, order in the front, get a number and they bring to the table. To go boxes are readily available to patrons as well as lids for the sides- you can ask for the sauces if you are taking food to go or bringing leftovers home. The owner and /or manager is awesome ( guy with the braided beard- sorry I didn't ask your name) and the staff are all passionate and polite. Great restaurant in Winter Park! My friends and I were running out of groceries in our last day in the area and decided to get some takeout from The Smokehouse. Ordered ourselves a half pound of brisket and a pound of chicken thighs. Came out within ten minutes and came with plenty of sauce so that we could get the full bbq experience at home. Brisket was a liiittle dry but the chicken thigh was great! The restaurant has a bar as well and I actually ordered an old fashion while we were waiting for our food. Carried out the Friday before New Years Eve. It was a little chaotic, and they were completely out of brisket. That having been said, the burnt tips were fantastic. Personally I cut off the fat part, and would have preferred that the fat be cut off in the first place, but that might just be a personal preference. The cornbread was good, but the macaroni and cheese needed salt. Ordering the burnt tips and macaroni each separately is cheaper than the one meal option (in case you don't want the pickles and cornbread). My one complaint..... not a single good vegetable option on the menu. There were collard greens, but I would have really appreciated a salad or some roasted vegetables even. Winter Park is small and if you drive up and down the Main road in the middle of town you can roll by all the restaurants in plain sight. Sitting a stone throw from the park in downtown us this spot. We slid by to order some BBQ while we were in town and we settled on some wings, brisket, burnt ends and turkey. They also gave us 5 different sauces including Alabama White sauce(my fave). We had a beer and soda for our sons while we waited in the main dining area which looks like your typical bbq spot. The place is clean and lots of paper towels, and sauces in the tables. I'd enjoy sitting down and having meal there. Since half our family was at the house we took it to go. The wings were pretty damn good!! The brisket and turkey were ok, and the burnt ends were very good. I really wasn't a fan of the sauces since I do t like very tart and mustardy based sauces; it that's my preference. We are spoilt because my son worked at an award winning BBQ place in Frisco TX and we have a high bar to rate other BBQ smokehouses. This place serves quality BBQ. I very much enjoyed the level of flavor coming out of their meats. I enjoyed the platter with two meats and sides. The brisket was tender and moist and the burnt ends were PACKED with smokey, beefy flavor. Their burnt ends had a perfect amount of meat to fat ratio. Their cole slaw was a cool and refreshing side. Pulled pork was smokey and paired very well with any of the variety of BBQ sauces they serve. Don't sleep on the Alabama White BBQ sauce - it stays refrigerated so you have to request it. That saw absolutely slaps if you are a fan of mayo based sauces and horseradish. It's vinegary like a BBQ sauce but also reminds me of a horseradish sauce that's served with Prime Rib. To me, the star of their sides was the baked beans. They were smokey, sweet, savory, creamy and held some texture from the beans. To be honest, it ate like a chili but had all the complex flavors of smokey baked beans. Looking back at their menu, I wish I had tried the Turkey Reuben. I am a big fan of Reubens and I believe theirs would be amazing. I have never had a smoked sliced turkey breast reuben before and imagine the smoke adds an element to that flavor combination worth trying. And how did I miss the bacon add on?!? All their BBQ sauces are good and I like that we can choose which one we want. I like heat so the hot one was all me. The sweet BBQ sauce my kids favorite and the mustard based and vinegary sauces were left pretty much untouched although I tried them and they were good... if that's your thing. The only negative I had was their cornbread was dry as the air around us. My kids both had their mac n cheese which was very good - much better than average but ate well for our kids (aka - not too fancy).
