My first tattoo experience was a really good one. Whew! After hearing many friends tell stories of tattoo artists (in general) who tend to be cocky and jerky and ruining their first experience at getting a tattoo, I tried to do my research first. I didn't want to feel like a piece of cattle, walking in- getting inked and shoved back out the door. I'm very glad I picked All Star because I experienced NONE of that. I wouldn't say I bonded with anyone there- but the girl behind the counter was friendly and didn't give any bad vibes. I came in an entire month in advance with some ideas- and Rob ended up helping me out. I explained everything I wanted and set my appointment a month later (I doubt that he was booked that far in advance, I just wanted it the next month). I paid the $20 deposit for an appointment and left him with my ideas & printouts for him to sketch up. I came back one week prior to my appt with some more artwork to further tweak the design and he seemed cool with it. When I went to my appointment, I was worried I might not like what he'd sketched - but I loved it. Everything else went smoothly. He didn't seem to mind I had 4 friends staring down at him working, and he promised to let us know if it bothered him. He was rather quiet during the 2 hours, but still seemed concerned with my comfort level. He seemed like a really nice guy. So yay! Good experience and a gorgeous tattoo! What in the whaaa? So I know it's 2011, and getting a tattoo is not a big deal anymore, but for this girl, it was HUGE. I knew that for my first (and probably only) tattoo, I'd want it to be something that held some significance to me. So anyway...I thought of something that was really important to me. I grabbed my sister (who happens to know her way around tattoos!), and we headed to AllStar. Like everyone else said, the place is meticulously clean. I felt immediately at ease, other than...you know -- the buzzing of the tattoo guns. Ahhh! That sound freaks me out! Since my tattoo was small and simple, I didn't need to make an appointment. The girl simply asked what I wanted done, and I told her. Then my tattoo artist, Andy, came out and introduced himself. I told him what I wanted, and he listened carefully and asked me a few follow up questions. Then he went to the back to draw up something for me. After a few minutes, he came out with a sketch. We tweaked it a bit until it was exactly what I wanted, and then we went back to his station. I plopped on the chair, gritted my teeth, and Andy went to work. There may have been some squealing. My sister thought it was funny enough to get on video. I'll kill her if it ever gets out. Before I knew it, the tattoo was done. Seriously -- 2 minutes. It hurt, but it wasn't the worst pain in my life. And Andy did a great job and was completely professional. He handed me some paperwork on tattoo care, and I paid and was on my way! I stare at my ink every chance I get. I'm so in love with it. It's perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. read more

Been coming here for years, and have gotten eight tattoos so far, and over twenty piercings from them. Super friendly staff that remember your name, very professional, and all the artists are great and actually work with you so you get what you want. Case in point, I originally went somewhere else to have a certain half-sleeve done. After the artist jerked me around and eventually said he couldn't do it (as well as telling me the reference picture I was showing him of the tattoo was done in sharpie, when it was actually fresh ink), it took me around a year to come to Allstar to get it done. I was hesitant after that last experience somewhere else, but there were no problems here. Years later, it still looks great. Welp, not much to say that's not already been said. I went here for nipple piercings. Did me and my friends nipple piercings at the same time and gave us a discount for us both coming in. It came out to like...4 boobies for the price of 3, or something. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the artist or the price (this is what happen when you try to review a place 2 years later) but I remember it being reasonable. Good experience. Friendly, knowledgable staff. I was there a few times for various things, whether it be piercings or follow-ups/jewelry changes and such, and they were always very sweet and welcoming (unlike SOME places that act like it's a chore when I want to give them my business). The shop is decorated in a very cool and creative way and there is plenty of flash art so that you can find just the right artwork to make into your tattoo. What a friendly and helpful staff! I went in to get my daith pierced (saw it on Pinterest) with a heart. When I go into a tattoo and piercing store I feel like I am "just" getting a piercing and it is not that big of a deal to others that have 10 piercings and many tattoos but they made me feel like my piercing was important. I have no other piercings and no tattoos. Kenny, a guest piercer, was so sweet and talked me through the whole process. It did not hurt at all! Not only did Ryan take the time to really figure out the best method to cover what needed help, he wanted to make sure that I was happy with the changes before he tattooed me. I would've given them 5 stars, but I don't really have anything to compare them to...therefor the 4. But what a great 4 they are!!! I went and got my I was scared chitless first tattoo a couple days ago. I had my design in my hot little trembling hand and went there all by my lil lonesome self. I felt so out of place going there as either everyone in there or going in there was already inked and much younger than me. I was a little scared ink virgin! The women at the counter were very nice and a few young kids who were waiting with me outside were very cool and encouraging. Shout out to Christopher and Luke and their buddy (sorry I forgot your name, man!) The place was very neat and clean, licenses were displayed on the walls, and of course all of the display art and books. People they were all so encouraging telling me how it might feel, how to care for it, etc. Ended up getting Luke and although his sense of humor was a bit dry, the man was cool! I had an audience of people watching me and cheering me on as I got inked and they even clapped for me when it was done. Awesome people, a little cheaper on the price compare to CheapTrx but it has a comparable quality of works. Bought few jewelry from them and they were pretty reasonable. Took few friends to get a tattoo, (they chose this place) and the results were amazing. Nice friendly people, great selections, the place could be bigger and a little bit more private because if I ever get a tattoo I'd like to be in a private room where I can cry and won't be seen by a lot of people but overall a great tattoo parlor. I went to Pepto to cover up a medium to large size cross on my arm with a Celtic knot, all in black. From what I gathered, Pepto is the "cover up guy". He only works at Allstar on Thursday and Friday, and the rest of the time at Trader Bob's. I went in with the broad idea of what I wanted, but I still wanted to give him some room to work. To me part of getting a tattoo is allowing the artist to be exactly that, an artist. Pepto drew a sketch up pretty quickly, and I couldn't have been happier with it. It was modern with vivid colors, but with some nice throwback touches that I really appreciated. It took about 3 hours for him to do, but to me it seemed like he was quick and precise. It could have easily taken 4 hours with someone else. He wasn't the most talkative of guys, but he wasn't unfriendly by any means. I'd imagine if you tattoo people all day for 6 days a week, sometimes you probably just want to work and not talk, but he still stopped every so often to ask if I was doing alright. All in all I was happy with the work, the price, and the service. I would definitely recommend Pepto, especially if you're needing a cover up done, and if I get any more tattoos I will be going back to him. P.S. I have had two of my four tattoos performed here in the last few weeks, both times as a walk-in. Ryan did my first one and gave advice on what would and wouldn't work with the design and after a few minutes had it drawn up and had the transfer on my arm. He checked with several of the other artists as well as me about the placement and the angle to make sure it was in the best spot. The tattoo experience itself was great, he was professional and kept checking to make sure I was comfortable. The finished product looks fantastic. Ryan wasn't there for my second, so I met with Ed. I can say that the experience was almost a carbon copy of the first visit. Ed was just as professional and courteous as you can hope for and also did a fantastic job. I've already met with Omar from the shop with a half-sleeve idea, and so far everything has been top notch. I will be back for more walk-ins in the future and I know I've found a good place that I'm 100% comfortable with. read more

I decided to go to All Star for my tattoo after going here with a friend couple years ago when she got her first tattoo. Her artist was Omar, and I always remembered him, not only because he was talented, but also because he seemed genuinely passionate about his work, and humble. Too many tattoo artists are arrogant jerks, and Omar is definitely NOT that. I got my tattoo here yesterday with Omar. He is super busy, so I had to make my appointment 2 weeks out, but I would much rather wait and get a tattoo with an artist I know for sure is going to do an amazing job than walk into uncertainty. The tattoo I got was pretty simple, a quote from Oscar Wilde, and he was very thorough in suggestion of style, placement, etc. He was super friendly and talked to me the whole time he was working, periodically asking how I was doing. When he was finished I had exactly what I wanted! This shop is impeccably clean, and has stacks and stacks of books filled with flash to choose from. All of the staff were polite and friendly. If you are looking for a great shop with amazing artists that is clean and has a welcoming environment, this is it. And I would personally recommend Omar to anyone! The tattoo artists are brilliant and I feel bad to leave low stars for their sake but the woman at the desk was extremely rude to me, Asked to see multiple IDs, accused me of having a fake ID, asked to match my credit card etc. I am in my 20s and do not look 17. She kept popping in during my session, and I felt like she was trying to intimidate me almost. God knows why, but she was rude enough for me to want to leave a bad review. Think they need to reconsider who they put up front. Artists on the other hand are brilliant and make you feel very comfortable. It is NOT easy to get a 5 star review from me off customer service alone, but this place has done it! I called randomly to see if I needed an appointment for a piercing and was met by a very friendly person on the phone. I went in and was greeted immediately. This is important because some tattoo/piercing places like to operate on this whole "rude rebel" vibe. I'm not down with that. Customer service MATTERS in every specialty. Anyway, so before I can even sit down, Trevor welcomes me and tells me he'll be right with me. After a very brief wait, he calls me back and we talk about what I want. He was VERY knowledgeable and honest. When i told him I'd been somewhere else a few years ago and had to take that piercing out b/c it wouldn't heal right, he didn't disparaged the place. He was very polite. Very professional. I would totally go back to him! He thoroughly explained the process and proper aftercare. Omar has done my two pieces, and he's also done one for my girlfriend. The shop is great, and all of the artists are really cool and experienced- I've not seen a piece that I haven't been impressed with. I got my first one there, and even though it could have been a bad or nerve racking experience, everyone in the shop made me feel at home. It's a shop that everyone will feel comfortable in- from a teenage girl to folks covered from head to toe- and everyone has a great time. I have been getting tattooed for 8 years and I have always gone to Iron Age. After countless horrible experiences at Iron Age, I decided to try a new place out. I was super nervous with the prospect of going to a new tattoo place. All Star Tattoos is incredible. It is definitely my new shop. The workers are friendly and treat you like a person. At Iron Age you were lucky to get a hello from the rude employees. The artists are skilled and really friendly. They are willing to work with you and listen to what you want. They are also very fairly priced and much better than Iron Age. Ask for Andy, he is an amazing artist with incredible skill. The only complaint I have is that there isn't a whole lot of privacy at All Star, but since everyone who works there is so down to earth and friendly, it doesn't really matter. Out of the now 15 tattoos I have, All Star has been the best experience I have ever had. Go there for sure! read more

I chose All-star as the locale to get my first tattoo after reading up on basically all of the ink shops in STL. While there were many others highly rated and well spoken of by friends, I kept seeing over and over that All-star puts out a top notch product. I had been contemplating the tattoo for nearly two years, and I'm not sure what caused me to go the day I got it, but it just felt like it was time. So my cousin and I went to All-star with the intention of seeing how much it would cost and when they would be able to get me in. The girl at the front desk was very friendly and helpful, and Luke came up and inquired a bit about what I was going for. I really wasn't planning on getting it that day, but the shop and Luke especially, made me feel comfortable and confident in my decision. The tat is a tibetan symbol, about 2"x4" on my chest. Luke sketched it up and we dove right in. Though it did hurt like a bitch at times, Luke was a calming presence. I didn't talk much as I was trying to ignore the needle (kind of scared of needles), but Luke was singing and chatting while blazing his way across my chest. When I first got a look at my new body art I was amazed. It was even better than I had imagined. I am extremely happy with my decision, and am very thankful I got such a master in Luke to ink me up. I chose All Star, because my daughter had one done there, and because I know Alan Thompson and trust him. First thing: the place is immaculate and super open. Rob Johnson was my artist, and he created a beautiful script tattoo for me (no computer fonts, all Rob's freehand), for my lower side. Rob explained the whole process to me, we had great conversation the entire time, and I was completely thrilled with his work. He is creating my next and last tattoo, and I can't wait to see it.
