I would highly recommend this restaurant for visitors to Florence. There were a lot of tourists on a Friday night, but locals as well. We started off with anchovies which were very good. I decided to stop at this place because it had a nice outdoor area. I had to wait about 5 minutes and was seated inside at the end of a long table with another couple. The interior was very large with beautiful buttress brick. I ordered the chicken with lemon (€16) and a house mixed salad with tomato, cheese, & olives (€8) and a glass of Chardonnay (€6). The wine was nice but I was disappointed in my meal. The chicken came out as chunks (that had a little flouring on it when cooked) with very little sauce and 2 slices of lemon. If you are staying north of the river, I highly suggest heading south just to be a bit further away from all the touristy spots. And Ristoro di' Cambi is perfect set up for that. There are some tourists, sure, but also a nice mix of locals too. What caught my eyes were the unusual dishes on the menu that I didn't think was catered to tourists. So.... That got us there. However, I went yesterday night and made a reservation with easy RSV and when I got there at 8pm for my reservation they told me they had it down for 7:30. A mistake made by THEIR system. They were kind of rude about it even after I showed them the email confirming my reservation for 8pm and told us they could seat us if we were out by 9:30. So so happy this was one of our meals while in Florence. It was recommended to us as the "very best amazing steak" served specifically here. As a medium steak girl, I was a little hesitant on the rare cooking style, but it was delicious. We had the steak, along with a side of roasted potatoes. We had originally planned on ordering the steak and a pasta (why not when in Italy) and our server essentially told us that no one orders the pasta. All'Antico Ristoro di Cambi is a traditional Tuscan trattoria that opened in Florence, Italy in 1950. It was founded by brothers Silvano and Bruno Cambi. Originally opened as a simple fiaschetteria (wine shop), they had a small kitchen which served honest food to go along with the straw-covered bottles of Chianti. Although they expanded over the years, the place is still owned by the Cambi Family. They serve some of the best authentic Florentine dishes, steeped in a history of family recipes. My wife and I visited All'Antico Ristoro di Cambi during our honeymoon in 2018. We had heard about the establishment through the Rick Steves guide book. It was advertised as a local hot spot on the south side of the Arno River, away from all of the places crowded with tourists. When we sat down at our table, we were happy to see that the menu was on a freshly printed piece of paper in one language (Italian). This means that all of the dishes are made with ingredients that were brought in fresh that day. For our antipasto, we started out with a plate of Prosciutto and Bocconcini di Buffala (Buffalo Mozzarella cheese balls). For our entrees, I was on the hunt for a traditional Florentine steak. Florence is very well-known for their Bistecca alla Fiorentina, usually made with Chianina Beef (a Tuscan breed of cattle that is prized for its culinary value). The steaks are sold by weight. Our server even brought out the raw steak to our table and waited for me to give him a thumbs up. When Florentines cook their steak, the outside is charred from the heat of the coals, but the inside remains rare as can be. It is then salted after it comes off the grill so it doesn't try out and arrives at the table glistening from a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and hit with freshly cracked black pepper. I ordered a side of sautéed spinach to go with mine. It was the single greatest steak I've ever eaten! My wife is not the biggest steak lover, so she ordered some Stuffed Zucchini Flowers as her entree. To drink, we ordered a delicious local bottle of Chianti. The restaurant had one of the largest wine selections I had ever seen. In Florence, pairing Chianina Beef with Chianti Wine is considered a "good marriage". The following day, my wife and I were on a Chianti wine tour. Our tour guide asked if we were planning on going to a Florentine steakhouse. So far this has been by far my fav meal in Italy. I was a little skeptical initially and we came here only due to the fact that Rick Stevens had recommended it Despite the peak of the summer, it was really busy at 7pm and we had the place mostly to ourselves. Service was attentive and the house red wine was a solid choice. Having sampled steaks a few times in the area already it is clear that the beef here is rather different than in the US. The fat trimming is mostly at the edges of the meat and it has little marbling of fat in meat itself. Therefore it does not have the melt in your mouth quality like Wagyu beef or usda prime beef. Dry aging for a a few months is therefore a must to make this good in my opinion compared to a shorter time used for most beef in the US The classic Bistecca here is still really special and has an incredible clean flavor. While it may not be the best in the world by some preferences, I think it warrants a fair comparison. It would be like saying Pinot noir is better than Chianti, it is just up to your palate. I've been in Italy for about 2 weeks so far, and the indulgent meal we shared at di' Cambi was by far the best I've had yet - and that's no easy contest! Being typical Americans, tired and hungry after a day of sightseeing, we arrived around 6pm, long before the locals began filtering in. Despite not having a reservation (low season), we were seated immediately. While we did survey the menu, we already knew why we'd come - that fantastic Florentine steak. Our server's English was far better than our Italian, and together we figured out our simple meal plan - one steak for two, a side of the beans, and a half litre of the house wine. I couldn't have been happier with anything we ordered - the steak was worth every euro, as it was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the meat shines through. You certainly don't need any oil, any salt... anything. Just enjoy one of the best steaks you'll ever have! While you do that, enjoy the wine, the ambiance, and all the other patrons who are marveling over those massive pieces of meat. In case any other Americans are reading this (and thanks to RS, I know you will be), I really would disregard the one star review below by the guy from Illinois. Every person we encountered in this restaurant was friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Bread, water, etc will show up when it does (ours all came quickly, though you may be well advised to arrive at 6pm or soon after, when they reopen)... and the fact that you showed up with a "starving" child isn't the restaurant's fault. Anyway, off my soap box! We finished with an apple pastry and cream dish, which was also wonderful. My favorite part about traveling is trying the take on steak in every country...heck even various cities within the same country have their own style of steak. Steak here is good but it's not the best steak I've ever had. Maybe I've been a bit spoiled or I just came on an off night but I just didn't get that wow factor everyone else is talking about. The steak was not tender. As a matter of fact, by the time our meal was over my jaw felt achy from all the chewing. The flavors were ok. You can tell it's the type of place that doesn't over season so you can get the natural flavors of the beef. We had a pasta dish and I enjoyed that. Pasta was light and silky. Salad was salad. Service was a bit slow. They just gather in the middle of the restaurant and talk to each other but it didn't really bother me. I read in a lot of reviews that reservations would be helpful and they're often so busy you'd be lucky to get a seat without reservations. When we arrived it was basically empty except 2 tables. Also, note that the hours on yelp are wrong. I don't know what the correct hours are but they're open earlier than what it says. read more

Three words: bistecca alla fiorentina. This was one of our favorite meals on our entire Italy trip thanks to a Rick Steve's video that we had watched previously. Thanks Rick! You order the steak by weight which is €45 per kg (the perfect size for 2 people) and it comes sliced and perfectly cooked. I love that they don't ask you how you'd like your steak as if to say 'we simply won't allow you to fk up this beautiful piece of meat'. We got to the restaurant at about 7:00p without a reservation, were promptly seated and just told that there was a reservation for our table at 8:30p. Nessun problema! Our meal was simple...couple of salads, house Chianti and steak. Perfect. The wine was also amazing. Five stars all around. This place fills up quickly and within 20-30 minutes there was a line outside so while we got lucky, I'd recommend either making a reservation (especially for a large party) or getting there early. It's a homey little place that we probably would've walked right by had we not been looking for it. I'm so glad we were able to have dinner here, I will recommend it to anyone I know who's traveling to Florence. The staff was also very accommodating and pleasant. Molto buono! read more

Steak here is unbelievable. I come from a family that owns burger restaurants so we get lots of top line steak from our meat supplier. And this is some of the best I've had. It is definitely different from your American steak. 1. It is nearly raw. The outside is seared, and the middle is basically cooked enough to get warm. This isn't a steak that comes out steaming and juicy 2. No heavy butters or sauces or spices or dry age. This steak is literally steak and salt. They recommend adding olive oil on when you eat it as well, it's totally not necessary though. My boyfriend also agreed this is one of the best steaks he's ever had. It was so tender, and just tasted so fresh and simple. You really get to taste the meat, whereas it feels like steak in America can get really overpowered by sauces and seasoning and butter. The rest of the food was good too, nothing spectacular but the whole purpose of coming here is for the bistecca fiorentina. If you're up for it, grab one of those cute bottles of chianti as well, but that is seriously ALL THAT YOU NEED for a fabulous meal here. I'm not trying to downplay the rest of the menu, but the steak was fabulous. Florentine beef is typically served VERY RARE, and the meat is unseasoned except for a dash of salt/pepper immediately after cooking. While it sounds too simple to be true, it was actually really flavorful on its own. I'm almost ashamed to say I didn't truly appreciate just how great this was while I was eating it. I was a bit jealous of the (probably) local guy at the next table over who had a whole steak to himself and it came uncut. Apparently they chop up the steak into slices for tourists... and I felt like the pre-chopped steak made it cool down faster. Anyhow, I went to another super fancy schmancy place for a prix fixe dinner the next night and their version of this was so horribly chewy that I couldn't even swallow it! Probably my favorite meal on my entire trip to Italy (which included Rome, Florence and Venice). I got there a bit early, about 6:30, with my group, as I couldn't get through on the phone number (it was going to their fax machine) but honestly, if you get there at 7:30 I don't see them running out of room. Be warned, the menu is all in Italian but the waiter can help interpret. If you are meat eater, get what they are known for, the Florence steak, and ideally, get it as they cook it, which is on the rare side - it is $45 Euro a Kilogram which is 2.2 pounds (includes the bone) - it is an aged beef steak and it is amazing - it comes to the table on a round wooden chopping block, sliced up into large pieces (and it is tender, wonderfully tender), with a little mound of rock salt on the side which you can rub the slices of steak through as you pull them onto your plate for further reduction into bite sized pieces and consumption. They have a large wine selection but the house wine goes well with this meal. Do note that the house wine is served in the regular table glass so the one you use for water you would use for the house red. I also recommend the roasted potatoes and the cooked spinach - they do have other cuts of beef but the Florence steak is the specialty and this place is recognized on the social networking sites (TripAdvisor, Yelp, etc). Oh, I would also star the meal with antipasto plates of a mix of meats and cheeses. If you can get through on the phone, do make a reservation a head of time - Italy is big on those and it is a nice gesture and helps to make sure you hae a table. If and when I go back to Florence I'll go here again, just a bit later in the evening, ideally with a reservation and I'll happily drink the house wine from the water glass on the table, just like the regular Italians and do note, I saw a good mix of locals along with my fellow tourists in this place as the evening went on, always a good sign read more

Rating: 86/100 pts One of the most enjoyable full course meals I enjoyed during my stay in Italy. Located in a building that dates from the 1500s, the interior has a traditional, unmistakably Old World feel to it. Like most good restaurants, much of their menu changes with the seasons. During my visit, together with a friend I shared: Prosciutto and Buffalo Mozzarella Gorgonzola & Asparagus Penne Florentine Steak Apple Strudel On entering the restaurant, you notice a counter of fresh meats and cheeses--an instant sign that their tagliatelle (meat & cheese antipasti) will be good. And the Prosciutto and Buffalo Mozzarella was phenomenal! The prosciutto had so much flavor, getting more intense as you chew it. The mozzarella was perfectly smooth and creamy, and among the best I've had. The penne was rich and smooth, cooked slightly al dente, with substantial chunks of chopped asparagus. You could tell the pasta was home-made, and the gorgonzola cheese was fresh. One of Florence's culinary claims to fame is their Bistecca alla Fiorentine, or Florentine-style beef steak. It is served thick and traditionally rare at the center, flavored very lightly. The smallest cut they had was 1.5 kilos--a sizable chunk of meat for 2 people. They brought out the steak prior to cooking it for visual affirmation. We sent it along its merry way, and it came out cooked perfectly, flavored only with a few sprinkled crystals of sea salt. Each bite was amazingly succulent, the rareness and minimal preparation only possible with high caliber meat. Ordering up a steak properly done in this manner won't be cheap, but I wanted to try it at least one of my days in Florence (as you should). Most restaurants in town offer it, at varying prices (and levels of quality). Do not expect any place offering it for under €20 to serve it at worthy quality. I'm not going to claim that Di' Cambi's is the "best steak in Florence", because this was the only time I tried it. However, I can say that the steak was amazingly good and totally worth the price which, mind you, was a mere €40 per kilo. I saw the same dish offered at other places for upward of €45-50, which made me feel like getting it here was the right choice. We concluded the meal with an Apple Strudel. It initially was not my intention to get what is traditionally an Austrian dessert to punctuate this traditional Tuscan meal. It was written in Italian, and the name did not openly suggest it was Apple Strudel--just that it was an apple ("mele") dessert served with "calda crema". I actually wanted to get something with fresh fruit, and the hot cream fascinated me further. Nevertheless, I was happy with this choice, as the cream was amazingly smooth and the pastry and apple filling fresh. Their website claims that their best desserts are their tiramisu, chocolate cake, and a "traditional oven honey with hot cream". Based on the strength of their Apple Strudel, I'd be up for ordering any of these during my next visit. A highly memorable meal--definitely worth crossing the river for! read more

As we waited for our meals, the waiter brought a basket of bread. It was singularly the worst bread we had ever tasted at a restaurant. It was clearly stale, and tasteless. We were a party of 4 diners. Two of them were meat lovers and they were very disappointed with the Steak Florentines that they ordered. When they were first brought out, one was quite undercooked. So, it had to go back for a little more cooking. The other one was tough to cut. After several bites, it was clear that the flavoring was not what was expected. The chianti that we selected was not up to par. As we are not wine experts, we toughed it out and swallowed the poor-quality wine (that was not priced as a cheap wine!). This place is mediocre at best. They will bullshit you a bit and are nice enough but don't fall for it. The best part of our meal was the antipasti starter with artichoke and two kinds of meats. The tagliatelle pasta was over cooked and came to the table warm, not hot, with a tolerable sauce that chef Boyardee could have come up with. We also had the beans which were plain and were one step above the kind you would dump out of a can. Finally, we had the Tuscan Steak which was sub par. For a steak to be that rare it really needs to be a great cut of beef. This was not. Tough and hard to chew, it smelled good but was lacking taste. If I am going to spend 50€ for a steak I expect it to at least be decent. (If you have never eaten a good steak before, you might think this is great - it is NOT. We left about half of the steak on the plate uneaten. We did not dare try their deserts and be further disappointed. Bottom line: Worst meal we have had in Florence hands down.
