Very secret looking speakeasy! It's in the back of the hotel and all you see is a hostess at a podium. The door is a wall and once you enter it's a very snazzy looking bar with live music and seating. Both times I have been here we have gotten the scorpion bowl. It serves 4-6 people and is very delicious! It even comes lit with a candle for extra flare! I really enjoyed the music and ambiance at this place and can see myself coming here again! read more

A "speakeasy" gem at the line hotel behind the bookcase. I put speakeasy in quotes because the line waiting outside the place would have been hard to miss. When you get there, you put your name on a list and they text you when your table is ready. I tried the West of the Moon and the Open Veins cocktails. West of the Moon tastes like you're drinking dill pickle water. I tolerated it because I like a challenge, but the others in my party hated it. No one LOVED it, lets just say that. Honestly, why? Ok, I don't like to complain but this time I'm going to. Here's why... Our cocktail server was kind, a little slow but kind. I liked her. The bartender and the fill-in server guy with the beard were less than professional and honestly cool. Usually I won't send a drink back- I'll just drink it. They were so tart and dry it was inedible. I asked for another one kindly, respectfully and I ended up getting a vodka soda. NOT what I asked for, not what I was planning on paying for. It was basically a middle finger to me and my friends. I could go to any basic bar and get that or make it myself. I'm not counting calories but I am counting how many times you can treat me poorly as a paying customer because I asked for a better tasting drink. Please leave your ego at home. If I treated my customers like this I wouldn't have any. I won't be back. An amazing under-the-radar speakeasy with a solid crew of bartenders that make the best drinks I've had so far in DC. Go through the lobby, straight ahead to the library/lounge, and then hang a right. You'll see an unmarked door next to some bookshelves. Through it you'll tumble down the rabbit hole into a laid back bar perfect for some low key conversation and spirits. Highly recommended! Best black Manhattan I've had. And I would know...I've had 20+ years more drinking experience than the hipsters who populate this joint. But don't let that stop you. Their cocktail menu is extensive for gin, rum and whiskey concoctions. The space is very much akin to a speakeasy, and it can be loud. I lost my soul walking in the room. The walls are full of art pieces. Amazing wall paintings. The drink menu was so creative and appealing. Drinks were delicious. Ubered over to Allegory to get on the wait list, which was 1.5 hours at 8:30pm. Signed up anyways and went to grab a drink at another place. Finally got the text to head over and texted we were on our way. Waited in line again and then were told we exceeded our 10 minutes to report on our reservation. Talked through after much arguing with host only to find out the waitlist is just the first step in the waiting process. We were looking at another hour in the outer waiting area before actually getting into the bar. This is total crap! read more

Allegory is unique. All three of the bars in Eaton Workshop have their own point of view. The lobby bar that you can see from the street is more casual and pedestrian. The rooftop bar Wild Days has a dance floor and an outdoor patio. I like Allegory because it is dark, broody, and moody. The murals on the walls are quite esoteric and symbolic. The receipt says Plan See Do at the Eaton Hotel. The barkeep took 30% off because it was a bit crowded and took a few minutes to get our drinks to us. We ordered 2 Kings & Elders, which were good particularly because of the candied ginger, but the seltzer in the recipe waters it down. read more

I'm sad to write this review because I love the bar so much. It's a perfect rendition of my favorite books Alice In Wonderland! I went out for my birthday for some cocktails and was really disappointed and upset by the experience. The service was extremely appalling. I am a server at an upscale Persian restaurant called Rumi's Kitchen and I couldn't believe the service here at Allegory. First off, the hostess was really rude and kept giving me the side eye and scowls whenever she came by our table and when we walked out. I don't know if I did something to offender her but she did not like me. The servers took a very long time to even come and great us at our table, so we just sat there awkwardly. It was not busy at all so there was no need for the wait. Then, when they came to the table finally they were not attentive or helpful at all - basically order takers at best. Our drinks took a long time to get to the table. When I tried to close out my tab at the end, every server and host walked past our table time after time even when I had flagged them down politely. It took a ridiculous amount of time for someone to grab my card and then even longer for them to bring it back. And the even more annoying part is that they put on a 22% gratuity! Like what...? The service was terrible, I was honestly shocked by this. We were ignored for ages while they served everyone else around us in a very attentive way. I am really sad about this experience and honestly don't know if I would suggest this place. It's a huge shame and I hope the establishment can turn their service around. read more

While the food, drinks, and decor were excellent, my friends and I were left very disappointed. The secret speakeasy we anticipated was immediately ruined a bit with the hostess post outside the door. Once inside, the 90s/00s music was so loud that we could barely hear each other. This is a cool themed lounge, not a dance club. Especially for having gone at 6pm on a Thursday the vibe was absolutely not it. Had the music been at a reasonable background level this review would have been at least a 4 star. And while I love the music that was playing, it didn't fit at all with what I expected this place to feel like. My last note is that while I understand DC pricing is high, the cost for the appetizers in particular was just too much for the portions given. We spent over $50 on 4 things that wouldn't have even added up to a single meal. While very good, you're paying nearly $20 for each item that wouldn't even satiate a toddler. With some small changes I would have definitely recommended this place to others, but not as we experienced it. read more

Without a doubt the rudest service I have ever experienced. I was visiting with a friend from out of town, approached the podium and the DJ let us know to just knock and the host would come. DJ was very kind and chill. Host came out and said, "are you here for allegory?" We said yes. He let us in, we came up to the bar, ordered with the bartender. What I assume to be the manager or lead came up and told us we first had to check in with the host. We said we did and he let us in. Host looked like a deer in headlights. We approach him and asked, "are we supposed to be seated," he said "you need to leave." We were confused and asked, "why? Did something happen?" And he told us they had closed. We entered at 1:27am. They are open until 2am. I have worked as a barista before and know there is a last call, but we were let in and came straight to the bar and there was no last call warning. Host told us outside that he only let us in because we asked to use the bathroom. We never needed to use the bathroom nor even had to use the bathroom. He kept insisting thats what we said and we never said that. All around rude and confusing service. When we walked into the lobby security hounded us and said the rest of the building was closed. We were not trying to access any other part of the building. We were just waiting for an Uber. Also not a hidden speak easy, just a small warm crowded bar. Go to the Vue or Mirror or somewhere else instead, seriously. read more

My first time going to a "speak-easy" type bar in a few years and I loved it. The Eaton is a gorgeous hotel, but this annex was made for people like me. - I was told that reservations are for 6 or more people, which makes sense considering the size... Also, the service was kind of slow both times I went. Go with a friend that you enjoy talking with because that helped while we waited for drinks. ---- Nonetheless, Allegory is a winner. Beautiful art, perfect lighting( very dim), and intimate but just enough space to where you're not overhearing other people's conversations. The bar is beautiful, so is the lounge area. Great music, mambiance, and a perfect date night spot before or after dinner. I've only had wine and champagne, but I will definitely try a cocktail next time. Awesome cocktail bar! Went with a friend and everything was wonderful. Atmosphere was nice, dark wood filled and classy, not too loud or crowded, perfect for chatting with a friend. All the drinks we tried were great. Most importantly the bar tender was both friendly and really knowledgable. The recommendations he gave up matched up perfectly with what types of drinks we wanted, which was really appreciated.
