North suburban Ukrainian drain that serves up old school prepared deli meals. They also offer up various imported food to meet the tastes of its customer base and introduce the American palate to their cuisine. Their offerings are superb especially if you enjoy Eastern European dish's. I probably hit this stirrup once a month and load up on many of their homemade dishes. They are always fresh and reasonably priced. If you're hungry immediately there's a few small cafe tables out front of the deli. Most of the women working at the deli are always friendly and even with a language barrier manage to walk me through my curiosities about the offerings. I love trying new goods and this spot has become a go to of mine whenever I'm out that way. read more

We have been recurring customers of the Deli, stopping by whenever we ran out of food. Allegro Deli has a great variety of European homemade dishes, freshly baked bread, smoked and slightly salted salmon, red caviar, ice cream, and everything in between. Food is always fresh, service is good and cheerful, store is clean and well organized. Today I picked up a large order for my family gathering. First of all, I was amazed how organized the staff. Everything that I ordered was already neatly packed and kept either in the fridge or in the warm box. Devils eggs, roasted duck, tongue and radishes salad, quinoa with broccoli, puff pastries with chicken, and mushroom salad were very tasty. Our guests indulged completely most of ordered food, and we didn't have a lot of leftovers. Thank you, Allegro Deli cooks and ladies in the front area for helping make our party tasteful. read more

It's amazing how many times I've passed this place and never went in because the name made me think this was a standard deli or because I was afraid of having difficulty ordering due to my lack of skill in the Russian language. Fortunately, I've now learned that this deli is far from normal and that you will have no difficulties ordering if you only speak English. From the outside, nothing really makes this deli stand out from other stores. There's not much advertising and the parking lot typically isn't very full. When you go into the store, you are surrounded by an amazing assortment of (mostly Russian) entrees, salads, desserts, and other food goods. This is at very competitive prices to other local delis and against Garden Fresh across the street. The daily lunch special for $5.50 is a steal for the amount of food that you get, matching Garden Fresh, Fresh Farms, KD Markets, and other local stores for value. What makes Allegro stand out for me -- other than the wonderful presentation -- is the large assortment of entrees available and the delicious flavors. With the food available here, there is hardly any reason to go to a Russian restaurant -- as most of the dishes you would have ordered are probably available here. The flavor in many cases are as good or sometimes even better than other local Russian restaurants. In particular, there are certain items that really stand out for me: - Split pea soup: Very rich and flavorful, I feel like there's ham or some other element adding flavor - Buckwheat: Prepared well as a side to accompany any entree - Cutlets: A little bready, but the texture and size is great - Vinegret: Tastes fresh and has a slightly crisp texture to it - Kabobs: Nice charcoal flavor infused, I particularly enjoyed the chicken - Fried potatoes: I feel there's probably lard infused into it, but it's very tasty and with a generous portion. I stopped into Allegro Deli twice recently. My first visit was on a weekend morning, just to check out the place and see what they had. It's bigger inside than I expected, and in additional to the deli counter, there are packaged foods and even kitchenware and knickknacks. It was fun to look around, and I ended up buying some apple strudel and spinach strudel. Both were very good. A few days later, I returned to try the Lunch Box special, which is only $5.50. On the day I was there, the main entree was a chicken cutlet. The meal also came with a choice of mashed or boiled potatoes, beet salad, soup and a blueberry compote. That's a ton of food for the price! The chicken was so-so, but I loved the mashed potatoes and beet salad, which contained onions and peas. It was delicious. I was told the soup was vegetable. It was in a light-colored broth and contained potatoes and grains. The soup was cold in the deli container, and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be eaten cold or heated up. I heated it up. It was pretty good, but not particularly memorable. I'm used to seeing compote with a thicker syrup, but this one was completely liquid with a small amount of blueberries in it. I was told it should be drank. I tried only a spoonful - I will pour some in a glass and try it as a beverage soon. Both times I stopped in, there were several other customers inside. It seems to be a popular place. I've only knocked off stars because while I was picking up lunch, I saw multiple employees wearing their masks below their noses, including the cashier and a man who was going back and forth from the kitchen to the counter. I want to return, but I will not go back until Covid risks have passed, as I don't think they are taking appropriate safety precautions. read more

Solid European deli with lots of yummy Eastern European hot foods and deli staples! I think the Oliviyeh salad (Ukrainian potato salad) is the best here out of all stores that sell it. I always buy it by the pound (or more) or ask for it! FYI Oliviyeh salad is one of my most favorite foods of all foods in the world :) They also sell little Russian candies, chocolates, soups, and other delicious foods. They have an area for seating as well. There is plenty of parking and always a line. The food is fresh and if they run out, they usually won't have more for the day which proves how fresh the quality is. Minus one star: they don't really make sandwiches like most "deli's" so make sure that you know that coming in. They sell sandwich supplies (breads and meats). They also have a strange line system where you line up and people can actually cut. It should be "first-come, first-serve" but it seems like whoever is most eager. read more

Amazing negative reviews. I've been going here for years. There are many Russian food delis and groceries in the general area. This is by far the best quality with the biggest variety and the prices are very reasonable. I've tried lox from many options in the northwest area and Allegro is by far the best. All are around $17 per pound. I'm amazed by the many reviewers who complain about service & don't speak Russian. So what. This is a Russian deli with the best Russian food. The cleanliness and food displays are also better than anywhere else. And lastly, it is always very busy with Russians proving my point. read more

Some interesting deals, and some fun stuff you can't find other places, like canned asparagus spears, and interesting beverages. Bakery seems limited. This russian deli has some really great food. The prices are a bit high and if you're not russian, be patient. Not all of the gals can explain what is in their food, but they'll ask someone who speaks better english if you need. All in all, it is a nice splurge once in a while. Some of our faves: pork diplomat, stuffed eggplant, chicken cutlets, russian potatoes and cabbage with mushrooms. Mmmm, think I might splurge tonight. :) read more

The food here is pretty good and I've always liked it when we order it for parties. However I was never the one to pick up the food to see that the food sits out all day! All the meats sit on top of the counters in the open! I was so disgusted! How long does this food sit out for?! Especially while the coronavirus is going on I think that is sooo unsanitary. I don't know if I can ever order food from here again after seeing that. I was a customer for years but will never come back because of the horrible service. I bought chocolate pastry "Kartoshka" that was marked $5.99/6 pieces and a few other things. When I got home I noticed that i was charged $6.99 for 'Kartoshka' and decided to stop by the store the next day for a refund as I was in the area anyway. The girl at the register informed me that the price is $6.99 indeed and all the packages got mislabeled which I understand happens and had no issues with that. Living in America I would expect a certain level of customer service. If a store made a mistake, correction would be in order and perhaps an apology. Instead I got nothing but contempt, mean looks and my dollar back with a demeanor as if I stole it. According to one of the girls that work there they noticed that mistake yesterday but never bothered to change prices until I complained. I have stopped in here a few times since it is right around the block from my Mother's place. This place is definitely Russian / Eastern European based. I think I have been the only person in here who spoke English. Thankfully the staff is multi-lingual. All of the signage for their foods are in English + Russian. They have a lot of prepared foods here for lunch and dinner. They also have deli cases stocked with meats, salads, and many types of smoked fish available. I have had potato pancakes, some type of potato pancake stuffed with chicken, and roast duck here. All of it was good. They have many different hot items to choose from, kebabs, chicken fish, etc.,etc. There is a small area with tables if you wanted to eat inside. I always get everything to go. If you are in the area it is worth checking out. If you happen to be Russian or Eastern European you definitely want to give it a try since it may have some items that you would like. Okay--salmon perfectly smoked on the premises for less than $12 a pound? Is that a typo? What is it about Russians and food? There are dishes in this place that defy description. Imagine a huge pile of what looks like baked potatoes, but are really carefully crafted orbs of mashed potatoes stuffed with savory ground chicken. Scary good. Their duck is stupendous. Grilled veggies! Roast chicken quarters! Their pastries are all incredible and some look downright weird. Owner "Lyudmila" doesn't have a ticket system for customers in her deli like the rest of the civilized places...everywhere. You take a ticket to signify who is next to be taken care of. Without the system you'll have a disgruntled women arguing with you about who is first, like back in Russia, and the workers encourage it. Terrible experience. read more

A place to order only what you know is good. They will likely let you taste something before you order it. The front staff is really trying to help, especially if you don't speak Russian. I find that amusing, although the clientele is almost exclusively Russian. Some food is stale, but freshly made lunch entries are good. An assembled lunchbox will be tasty and cheap.
