This little neighborhood gem is 5 stars on every turn. They have been serving up gold standard corned beef and pastrami sandwiches since 1975 when Burt opened the place, which is now run by his son. Talked to the owners, who are just the people you want there to be in the world. They gave us a little sample of hot corned beef while we waited for the magic. Melt in your mouth deckle, after battling chewy or tough fat from other places, felt like my long-lost love coming home from the sea. We ate the sandwich in the car and talked about how great it was to have a beloved food item that was just perfection, like knowing there was something out there in the world that would always make you happy. 10/10, no notes. Anyways, a barely noticeable location in Libertyville in a strip mall behind a boarded up Baker's Square houses one of the best Corned Beef/Pastrami sandwiches I have had in the Chicagoland area. They call it the Yummy (and it lives up to the name). When I walked in the gentleman was very nice and asked me if it was a first time as I'm sure he read the confusion off of my face. After some small talk he said go for the Yummy, you'll either love it or hate it, lol. And love it I did. I did do some of my crazy substitutions (i know i'm weird), but they swapped out the rye for a kaiser roll, removed the toppings and gave me cheddar instead of swiss. It was warm and tasty. A definite sandwich worth of a drive/trip. The inside is kinda small/dated (imo adds to the charm). There are a few booths and a couple chairs to eat in if you would like. Burt's has long been a Libertyville favorite. But going there to pick up holiday food was a shocking disappointment. First of all, only one person was behind the counter, so there was a long wait. Other than corned beef, there was nothing appealing to buy. No rolls, fresh rye, no pickles in the barrel (owner sold me one, but not new like I wanted) and the deli salads were in a dark case and did not look like something you'd want to buy. A customer came in before me who was having a large group for brunch. She wanted fresh bagels...from a deli. Believe it or not, they did not have any. The owner went in the back and found her some frozen ones! The breads were Rosen's in a bag which are sold in supermarkets. No dessert items except some packaged cookies from who knows when. The inside of the place is clean and has an old school nostalgia to it. Now for the food, we tried the yummy at the recommendation of ten owner and it was amazing. The amount of meat that was piled onto the sandwich makes it a shareable entree. Top it off with some of the most tasty kettle cooked chips and drink and you're in paradise!
