It was served on rye bread with a pickle, and I asked for a small potato salad. Food was flavorful and filling. I had been meaning to go into this place for a long time, but was never able to get there. So I went there today grabbed a sandwich and unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The corned beef was good, but they asked me if I wanted it on Rye or a roll and I asked for Rye. Unfortunately, I took it to go so by the time I got home and realized it was on white bread, which in all my years I've never had a corned beef sandwich on white bread. The sandwich I got looked nothing like the sandwiches on their website. The website shows large portions of corned beef, and other meats, that was far from what I got. I usually enjoy having half the sandwich now and half the sandwich for another meal. Let's just say I ate the corned beef!! I ordered a side of coleslaw and had two bites of it and realized it may have been sitting too long. It was definitely not coleslaw that I am accustomed to from a deli. I ordered a ham and Swiss sandwich. The bread seemed to be soft and fresh. Ham was your basic polish Krakus type of ham (Boars Head). There was way too much mayo. I had to scape it off. Had I known I would've asked for easy mayo. Between the ham and the cheese there was a minimal amount. The sandwich was just OK. It wasn't bad. The service was super friendly. The lady was very very nice and they made the sandwich quickly. I ordered the soup which originally I thought it was cream of chicken rice but I misread it and it was broth soup which was fine. It was good. I had asked for a lemon to squeeze into it being that I'm Greek and that's what we do. But surprisingly, they did not have any lemons. I was originally going to order an Italian sub, but I learned that they use Italian dressing which a true Chicago Italian sun that's a no no. It should be separate oil, vinegar and oregano. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally got around to it. A typical deli sandwich place with lots of different sandwiches to choose from. We had the corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, hot dogs and a chicken wrap with cole slaw on the side. The sandwiches were overall decent. Though for the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches especially I felt like the meat was lacking in quantity. When I order those type of sandwiches I sort of expect them to be overflowing in quantity enough to make more than 1 sandwich with the amount of meat they give. The menu options looked delicious and there were several options of delicious hot soups to choose from. When I actually got the food, this seemed like a total bait and switch. Instead of a gourmet deli with freshly prepared options and wonderful aromas, this felt more like a mash of premade ingredients that didn't seem premium at all. Here are thoughts on the items I tried: Beef chili: Slightly spicy with a good amount of cheese and onions, I wish this was a bit thicker in consistency but this was pretty enjoyable. Chicken noodle soup: The chicken seemed overly soft with no real texture, the broth contained a bunch of vegetables but didn't really have the flavor to match the look. Manny's original corned beef: Nice flavor, but a bit small in sandwich size. Bread was nothing special, but the beef was sliced nicely with a good saltiness and strong beef flavor. The thick stack provided a nice mouthfeel with a soft texture of the beef. Triple decker: The smoked bacon dominated this dish both in flavor and in texture. The turkey breast provided a nice saltiness to go with the fresh tomato and lettuce. Overall, prices are high and portion sizes are small. I enjoyed the flavors of the food, but the food wasn't good enough to justify the premium paid for it. Similar options such as Jason's Deli or local deli shops provide a similar product at a better price, with better side options. read more

Before Covid-19, I came here once a week for lunch. Eventually I landed on the half triple decker and chicken chili combo. That chicken chili is just ridiculously good. I don't even want to know the calories. I have become a "chili guy" because of this place which I don't even think is known for chili. I really like how they serve diet coke with all the other pepsi products. The frozen yogurt is a nice touch and a brilliant idea to differentiate themselves. My absolute favorite sandwich shop in the area! I just wish they were open a little later, or on Sunday. I always get the turkey with everything and add onions. My SO always gets the what about bill. Good but somewhat pricey. Met a Friend there for lunch because it was midway between our homes. First time there and I wanted a corn beef sandwich so that's what I ordered and it was good. Could've been a little more meat on there, but the bread was fresh, the corned Beef was lean. He had a medium chili and we both had fountain drinks, no chips or other sides and the total was around $23.00 which I thought was a bit high for what we ordered. I ordered online. When ordering, it asked how I was planning on paying, and one of the choices was cash. I chose that option. When I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, it was not filled. I showed a man my phone showing I ordered it with the cash option. He stated I didn't pay when ordering. Therefore, my order wasn't filled. I told him I chose the cash option, and he said it needed to be paid by a credit/debit card when you order online. I asked then why there was a cash option. He said that is just the way the company they use puts that on the online ordering but really didn't give me an answer why they had a cash option if you can't choose it. Again, he said that is just the way that that company has as an option. I would never have placed an online order if I couldn't use the cash option. No one even offered any type of discount or complimentary chips for the inconvenience it caused me because I had to wait for an order that should have been ready. The everyone who works there is awesome, friendly, helpful, accommodating, they really makes me feel welcome and appreciated. The menu board is impossible for me to read, but then my vision is worse than average so, I just grab the printed menu. Their sandwiches are big and YUMMY! #3 Baja is delicious - when I choose it i thought shredded carrots? in a sandwich? sounds messy - but good.. mmmmk... the ingredients were fresh and put in place just right so they stay in the bread as you eat - I mean that sandwich was made with LOVE. And if you want to even come close to the authentic deli experience then you have to order the large. So you're looking at about $17 with tax. I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm spending $17 on a sandwich then I'm gonna want to be impressed. Didn't happen. It was good. Decent sized but again nothing like a Katzinger's. I didn't know this was such a big chain/franchise. So it's right by my work and the only place i haven't tried in the plaza so I decided it was time. Ok, so it is 4:30PM so i get why its so empty, I was the only one there. Picked out the #10 Chicken Dijon on tomato focaccia bread. Barely any dijon but I must admit the bread was pretty good. It's like the size of a quarter pounder but for $7.80. I would've been happier with a footlong from subway though. Anyways, I handed the guy my cash and after he gives me change I see he goes to condense food by taking the little leftover bits in one container, no gloves and without washing, and puts them in a a newer fuller container. Not only has he contaminated the little bits, but now the whole new one is as well. I'm guessing one must be the manager even though he sure didn't seem it, I would suggest better training and food sanitation practices. I'm pretty nit picky about these things and have seen enough behind closed door action. This in plain sight while I'm standing there?? This place is so horrible that I felt compiled to return to yelp after a three year review hiatus. I went here today with a colleague and they had run out of mozzarella cheese, which put put an end to first our first choice. But wait it took five minutes to be acknowledged before we found out this detail. I don't mind waiting, but when customer is in front of you, don't you think you would say one moment and I'll be right with you? Not here, the staff is rude, disorganized, and slow. 4 other friends and myself were planning on trying the new BBQ place next to The Beer Market. In a last minute change of heart, we all decided to try the Halsted Street Deli instead, what a mistake. My friend got the Big Tony, and I got the Corned beef sandwich with pasta salad. The Corned beef sandwich was garbage, the meat had little to any of that tasty corned beef flavor I was dying for. In addition, the price was a rip off, the sandwich was tiny and all you got for 8$ was a pickle and this tiny sandwich. The pasta salad was strognough style egg noodles, celery and mayonnaise, at least it was only 1$, but gross and bland. The big Tony was a little better, but really just a hair above a chain deli like quiznos. Don't waste your time, for a Vernon hills deli, try Jason's, or even Burt's in Libertyville. Yes, they have a new menu, and there is a newer on coming in March. Pretty soon they will be open for Breakfast, I went in here on the advise of my daughter, who is a regular, she works nearby. I had a regular Ruben Sandwich, this is made with Manny's Deli Corned Beef ( this had to be the leanest corned beef) I've had in a while. No extra charge either. I also tried there Chicken Chili, never tried this before either. It was excellent, and not spicy at all. I am a super big fan here. I will be back. Way too expensive for what you get. The foods not bad, not great, but not bad. However, again the biggest drawback is the price. The first time I went here, I don't remember what I got, all I remember was leaving feeling unsatisfied and ripped off. I decided to go again today. I paid just under 9 bucks for the smallest cup of soup you could imagine (good soup though), and half a terribly small sandwich (not a terrible sandwich). I left still hungry. For the same amount of money I could've just gone to the Subway across the street and gotten a footlong. With the competition nearby with comparable prices for a much more filling meal, unless they get their prices down, I doubt they'll stay in business . read more

There is a reason why I trust Yelpers - reviews don't lie! However, I remember trying part of a sandwich awhile back and thought I would give Halsted Street Deli another go since it was pretty good. Anyway, I went with the 1/2 sandwich combo where you get 1/2 of a sandwich, small soup, and drink. I ordered #2 Big Tony and Tomato Basil soup. Besides the fact that it should be called 1/4 sandwich because it was so tiny, it was the most tasteless thing I have ever tried. The bread was drier than the desert and it had absolutely no juices flowing from the meat. I love Italian sandwiches.. I usually always get that as an option whenever I can. Big Tony is that type of Italian with so many meats inside and two dressings, so I have no idea why it came out so horribly dry and tasteless. The soup was watered down, and left absolutely no impression on me. Not sure what I hated more... I give it two stars because the guy at the counter was nice - I mean nothing to complain or rave about... just average service. The only way I may try this food again is if I am at The Beer Market next door. It's a bar that serves nothing but beer, but you can order carryout from any of the near restaurants and they deliver right to you. While I was at Halsted, the guy had a call to deliver some food which is pretty cool. So, I highly recommend staying away from here and saving your money on something that is much more worthwhile! read more

Whats with all the negative reviews of Sahkou Sushi? I must say I have been to Halsted Street Deli multiple times and had no issues with the food I have gotten. Location and Ambiance: The location is nothing special, its next to a few other food places and a PNC bank. Ambiance wise its nice, because its attached to a frozen yogurt shop. Food: I have ordered a few different items from Halsted Street Deli, and I once again have had no complaints and have enjoyed all of the food I have gotten. Staff: The staff seems nice, and always tries to make conversation when I come in Overall, Its a very average shop but nothing to loose if your in the area and craving deli food. I was a little worried about the negative reviews, but this place is just so close to my office and their menu sounded great so I had to try it. I enjoyed my first meal here quite a bit! Friendly staff, generously sized sandwich (I got a Big Tony), quick service, nice little selection of specialty bottled sodas. Things were a buck or two more expensive than similar items elsewhere, but that's pretty normal for the neighborhood, and I was really getting tired of the local chains. Pretty neat that the YogenFruz is inside of the restaurant, too. I didn't eat in, but there were plenty of tables and the place looked clean and inviting. read more

I go here for lunch at least once a week. Service is fast and friendly. Delicious french bread - crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I recommend the #1 (turkey sub) toasted and with provolone. One sub lasts for two meals.
