They were short staff, our food when it was finally served was cold, the sides didn't come out with our food and all of our steaks were overcooked. One of the steak was super cold like they took it out of the fridge and served it. I personally told the waiter when I returned my steak that I didn't want a replacement and she came to the table to give me a new steak, I told her i didn't want it and she got an attitude telling me that it was just made for me. They need to keep their food menu to a minimum because they don't have the staff and their waitresses are not very friendly. read more

We had a party of 30 people. Took almost 3 hours to get our food. Ok, I understand, because of large party we had to wait. Finally the food came and all of the temperatures on the steaks were wrong. over cooked, under cooked and raw. The side dishes came out way after eating our protein. For the prices they charge you would think the quality of the food would be worth the wait. Never again. Not worth it. The waiters and waitresses were on point though, no fault on them. The girls and I got together to get some food and catch up. When I arrived I parked in their small lot. We walked in, and the place was nice, and we sat on the outside patio. We ordered different dishes and I got the mussels and my friends got the branzino and the mussels. It took about 20 minutes or so. When I dug in, the mussels weren't bad. My husband and I walk here at times when we want to do a mini date as they are typically open late and you can sit outside. But to be honest, the food in my opinion is just ok and it's really overpriced. The last told we went, we got an appetizer and two drinks. It was $60 without tip. To me it wasn't worth it at all. My lunch order today actually seems like some sort of cruel joke that was played on me. Reviews and pictures don't mean a thing when they don't match the experience. What I ordered vs what I got. If you go to Allegro online and click Order Online you will find some pictures that are supposed to represent the dishes that they serve. I ordered Salado De Polvo which looks to have tomato, onion, herbs & maybe some garlic and octopus. I even called to verify that the octopus was grilled. What I got was octopus with no identity of how it was cooked, swimming in 1/4c of oil with a sliced boiled egg. I also ordered Ameijoas A Bulhao De Pato from a picture which looked liked what this dish should be. What I got were thumb size clams shells with the majority missing any clam meat but those that did, contained meat the size of my pinky finger nail. I thought that the smallest size clam were little necks but I've been proven wrong. I also ordered the Paella Marinera. I wanted lobster but that was my mistake. The rice was good, there were clams the size that I thought I would get with the Ameijoas A Bulhao De Pato. What I didn't like were the fat, chewy calamari rings. I called to express my disappointment and I was given only regrets. The bill was $106 with a tip. It was not worth it. I see that the owner may respond to negative reviews. Back again with one of my homies. Caught the place 40 minutes before the kitchen closed (perfect timing!!!) all of the names on the menu are in Portuguese, but the very attentive staff will help you. I had a cheese board with different meats such as blood sausage and a jam that is absolutely excellent. I had water with lemon and a glass of Pinot noir to go with the steak covered in gravy with mushroom. My entree was accompanied by fries and white rice. Man! Ya boi left full and satisfied. Entering this establishment, a fish tank can be seen. There was a bar with about 10 seats and a good number of tables on both sides of the fish tank too. There was plenty of décor throughout. The menu had a lot of options as well the dessert one too. The service was okay (more on that below). For an appetizer, the land snails ($13.95) were ordered. However, there was an issue at first. The waiter originally brought them and then said it was not for us (we could not see since it was covered). Time went on and still no snails. We asked what the issue was and he told us we never ordered them. We then received them after inquiring about it. It was just weird since we received them originally. There was a bunch of small snails in a light sauce. The sauce had a slight kick to it as well. It was very tasty. For my entrée, I had the swordfish with garlic sauce ($26.95). It was alright. The portion was small, but the taste was decent. The fish was cooked appropriately as well as the vegetables. I also tried some paella. It was very plain. The garlic sauce from my swordfish was added to give it some flavor. The shelled fish was fishy too. For dessert the limoncello flute and crème brulee with berries were tried. The limoncello flute was basically a sorbet. It was pleasant, but not a gelato like the menu described. The crème brulee with berries was just berries with cream. This is a HANDS DOWN NO!! Don't go for the food or the hookah. Absolutely horrible. Only thing enjoyed was the sangria. I ordered paella, what a disappointment. They trick you by covering it with half an over cooked lobster and a few clam and then all rice on the bottom barely seasoned, no seafood mixed in at all. Not to mention that some of the rice was white which tells me they probably mixed leftover white rice or something in there. I took one bite and sent it back. DISGUSTING. ALSO My friend had octopus, they said it tasted canned/frozen. THANK GOD FOR BREAD or I would have left starving. Went for dinner here tonight and while the service was good the food was not. Very expensive and all the food was barely warm. I laying in bed now sick to my stomach from shrimp that was served to me that was clearly reheated. I am in the service industry 40 years and I know fresh food. This place must have changed hands. It used to be good. Not to mention NO ONE in the restaurant on a Saturday night. We should have known then but I've never had a bad experience here so I ignored that when we walked in. Too bad. After discussing the patio smoking policy in the place with Paulo. I would fix my rate from 1 to 4 stars. Food and service was great, the patio ambience is unique and it invites you to keep the sangrias coming. Be cautious if you go with children as the Patio is not smoke free. Not a bad spot for lunch. It's fairly elegant inside compared to the neighborhood where it's located. Parking can be a chore, but comes with the territory. I came with a client and we both ordered fish. One was ordered from the daily special and other was ordered from the fresh fish section of the menu; both were tasty. Each came with steamed veggies and potatoes. The sweet iced tea taste like it's from a can, while the unsweetened tea tastes like they make it there. I used to love coming to the Allegro Seafood Grill, but I have to say that it has declined in quality. The lobster in the seafood tower was dry, although the shrimp was good. The service was friendly and attentive but my main gripe is the consistent loud thumping music. We were a group of six celebrating my birthday and conversation was next to impossible. The only conversation that we were able to have was at the end of the dinner when the plates were cleared and four of us were able to huddle at one end of the table. Enjoyed dinner here last night for a friends surprise birthday. They have valet parking so you don't have to circle the block looking for a spot which is awesome. They were able to accommodate 30 people. Right away we had pitchers of sangria which were very good. Then we had some appetizers, clams, shrimp, calamari, and sausage. It was all very good. We devoured everything. For dinner I got the salmon dish. It came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. They were pretty slim with the sides but I was pretty full already. The service was excellent. The bathrooms were very clean and nice. The restaurant was decorated for Halloween which was done very well. They have an outdoor tiki bar area with heat lamps which looked like a great place to enjoy a drink in the summer. Everything went very smoothly for such a large party. I read more

Went to this place for a random dinner yesterday and it's not bad at all! I did not have reservations however I was able to get a table out back. The area clean well maintained with a bar and a few tables. The staff was friendly and very good. Our server checked in on us at least every 5 minutes which I can really appreciate. The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the rack of lamb (mine) medium rare, every piece was cooked just right and cooked just right. My friend had the surf and turf, her steak was also medium and good. Not the best steak I've had but definitely good. The presentation of the food could use some work but hey it's not super expensive like it is in the city. Between the 2 of us the bill was just under 100. read more

Allegro is situated a few blocks from Ferry street, churasqueria central. I rushed the decision on this restaurant however because I just picked my brother up from EWR, he was hungry, and my shotgunned yelp search was relatively unfruitful. The restaurant is clean and lively, has limited parking, valet and good table service, but the food was just okay. We tried the octopus salad (sorry, no pictures), and for entrees we ordered the Valencian Paella and smaller rib eye. The octo salad was served in oil, really good. The paella was an enormous portion, prepared with shortcuts however. That beautiful crust of toasted rice on the bottom of the pan that I expect from a paella just wasn't there, leading me to assume they use precooked rice (if not shellfish and sausage too) and simply reheat. My steak was enormous, but maybe 40% of its weight was inedible fat. Bottom line, totally affordable considering the enormous portions, but the food is just-OK. read more

Allegro is one of my new spots to eat in Newark, especially during the summer. There's a large outdoor patio to eat during the warmer months. What I like about Allegro is that the food itself is pretty traditional. It's hard to find a good decent Portuguese restaurant in Newark that hasn't changed the way food is made to cater to the American palate. Since I've always been there with groups of people, we usually order a couple of appetizers and entrees to share amongst each other. First, we all shared a big pitcher of the Allegro Sangria - it's a MUST TRY! It was really refreshing and not too sweet. For appetizers we ordered the baby clams and the octopus salad. The seafood is fresh and delicious! For entrees, we ordered the veal in Port Wince Sauce, the Mixed Grill for 4 people, and the Grilled Cod Fish. The Port Wine gave the veal a distinct, good flavor. It was accompanied by white rice and potatoes. The meats in the Mixed Grill were delish! It was juicy, full of flavor, and not overdone al all! The Grilled Cod Fish was pretty good too (I'm not really a fish fanatic so I could have passed it up easily). The cod fish was prepared just the way any Portuguese mom would prepare it at home. Their only downfall is the service. The waiters are very friendly, but they weren't very attentive and did forget to check up to see if everything was ok here and there. It took me awhile to write this review, simply because I like focusing on consistency. In this business, you have good days, and bad days, so i find it only fair to frequent an establishment several times before offering my feedback. No one person can rate everything is just one sitting. I have read every single review before writing this one to see if my experience was similar be it good or bad. I focused on several key points that everyone looks for when dining out. Some key points might be more important to some, and other key points may not be a breaking point for diners/customers. I graded each category with a 1-5 (resembling stars) then added all stars and divided by amount of categories i graded: SERVICE: 5 I've been here several times at different services, Lunch, Happy Hour, Bar and Table, Early and Late Dinner. I've been here alone, with a party of 2, 3 and as much as 9. The attention to a customer is apparent as soon as you walk in. I was greeted by the Hostess, the bar-maid, the owner or the Manager with a smile/hello or a hand shake and seated quickly if not immediately...All but one time, but ill explain below. Menu knowledge and daily specials seems to be a standard and expectation for every employee. Drink were served cold and quickly. I watched some "regulars" get their drink of choice seconds after being greeted. Impressive. Appetizers - Some took longer than others to arrive, which is understandable. Not everything cooks in 3-4 minutes and you can tell they focus on freshness. I tend to worry if some items come to me too quickly. FOOD: 5 The Menu makes sense. Its known for being a Seafood Grill offering great, quality meats (steak etc). They have an identity and they stick to it. Seafood, Steak and great tapas. I've been to enough establishments where the menu left me confused. Example, an Italian restaurant that serves gyros, Portuguese Restaurants that serve Chicken Parmesan, Mexican Restaurants that service chicken wings or chicken fingers..i could go on. Its good to see that they are sticking to one identity, and they do it very well. The food has always been flavorful and well cooked as requested. Presentation was always appealing. ATMOSPHERE: 5 This place has a very old world rustic feel to it. Beautiful stone and tile makes you feel like you're sitting in a restaurant on the banks of the Tejo River in Portugal. Table spacing is comfortable and ample, and the ambiance is pleasant with 5 diners or 100 diners. TVs are always just loud enough, and the music, regardless the genre is always set well enough to hear the people at your table, but still loud enough to enjoy the wide array of choices being played. DECOR: 5 Furniture - Suits their identity very well Lighting - Enough windows to use natural light during the day and dinner service lighting is soft and appropriate. Fixtures/Color Scheme - From the bar top, to bar stools to tables and chairs, to the wall colors, on point. Love the aquarium, my son loves it more. I have to bring him over every 5 minutes to watch the exotic fish while he says.."FEEEESH" 400 times. Tables and tableware/glasses have always been clean. I haven't found one stain on their linen napkins to date. APPETIZERS: 4 (Only because i haven't tried them all yet) But the charcuterie board is amazing, their Scallops a Allegro, to die for, grilled Portuguese sausage, brought me back to my moms home made sausage and octopus Feira style, mouth watering. DRINKS: 4 (Only because i haven't had them all) Their Sangria, ridiculous. Perfect balance of alcohol, fruit and alcohol. They have a nice wine list and sample/offer great wines from different regions. They pair well with all their appetizers and entrees. ENTREES: 5 I haven't tried them all, but in my experience, every dish was perfectly cooked, the meats grilled to my liking, seafood never dry (hard considering they do grill some of their Nigerian Tiger Shrimp and other items. Those babies are the size of my open palm. DESSERTS/COFFEE: 5 Ive tried a lot of these and never disappointed. From the fruits, to the pastries, the home made creme brulee, the gelatos and ice cream..deeeeliscious. Coffees are always on point CLEANLINESS: 5 Go visit their restrooms, you will see how they care about being clean. Impeccable. Everything about the restaurant is open, warm and welcoming. CHECK OUT: 5 Never had to wait long to be checked out. Bill was never wrong, Every experience has ended with a "Thank you for coming...", "How did we do..." "Hope to see you soon..." Disappointed! Got a gift certificate for this place and saved it for my 70th birthday celebration. Place was pretty empty when we got there about 4:45 on a Wednesday. We were seated and offered drinks. My friend ordered a Cosmopolitan that was something but not a cosmopolitan, not even close. The skirt steak was tasty but mashed potatoes were cold and tasteless. We asked for them to be heated and that really didn't help. Still not warm. The orange roughy was ok, the sauce was was bland and I had to add lemon and salt to give it some kind of flavor. The chips were ok but not crispy. I have had better rice from an instant box and I don't even like that. This place must have changed hands, staff and cook. Really horrible and a disappointment.. We ordered the garlic shrimp appetizer and was decent. Then we ordered the paella which was mostly rice, an overcooked lobster, and some shrimp., But that was not the worst part. We ordered mariscada with green sauce which was nothing green about it and lacked any flavor. When we asked the waiter to check with the kitchen, he returned with some cilantro on top!!!! He said that was the best they could do!! We ordered cappuccino which was like warm. The dessert flute was iced, yes frozen iced.... The place is overpriced, overrated and a blah as compared to the many places in the ironbound that we frequent and enjoy. Oh, one more thing the gratuity was added to the check for a party of four.
