As I live in Northern California, when my father passed away I did not know who to select for his mortuary needs and went with another service. My initial interactions with that company's representatives were so disappointing that I contacted Oceanside Mortuary. Within the first few minutes of our phone conversation, they exhibited such care and professionalism that I asked them to take over my father's arrangements. When I met in person with Mary a short time later, she walked me through the process, explained options (all of which were very reasonable in price), and did not try to pressure me into selecting one option over another. My father's service, while brief, brought comfort to my mother and all who attended, and this was due in large part to Mary and her colleagues. Had my interactions with Oceanside Mortuary stopped there, I would have gladly given them five stars. Now, I would double that if I could. Let me explain. Several months after my father's passing I learned that my mother, as the widow of a veteran, might qualify for additional benefits if we could show one of several conditions had contributed to his death. While he had suffered from the listed conditions, they were not included on his death certificate. Not knowing where to begin, I contacted Mary and explained the situation. She soon took the lead with hospice, the physician who completed the death certificate, the county, and state, and was able to obtain a revised death certificate. She also put me in touch with an expert on veterans benefits who discussed with me my mother's situation. Mary's efforts helped my ninety-nine year old mother receive double the military benefits she had been receiving, which will allow her to stay in her current assisted living facility. As Mary worked to get the revised death certificate, she showed the same concern and attention to detail that she did when I first met her. Without any hesitation, I would unequivocally recommend Oceanside Mortuary to anyone who has suffered a loss in their family.

I write this having been a guest of a recent funeral service at Silver Lining Cremations…read more Located near the Auto Park in Escondido, the outside of the building is quite simple and nondescript. It's not a location that you might expect to find a cremation place, as it's quite industrial/business park-ish, but inside is very clean, new, modern and tastefully decorated. When we entered the building, there was a small lobby with a couple of chairs, a coffee table and a slim table where flowers and a guest- book were placed, along with a TV screen with a photo of the deceased. Guests and family lingered here until we were allowed to proceed to the service room at exactly the time of the service. The lobby isn't very large. I would have preferred to have been able to go and take a seat in the service room earlier. (There were approx 28 attending in our case). Through double doors off the lobby, the service room is pleasantly decorated with dark collapsible chairs, a large carpeted rug, muted dark blue/grey paint, a curtain and 2 TV screens for displaying photo slideshows. The people who spoke in the service were provided a microphone. Quiet music played. There was a slight technical difficulty with the slideshow, but it was solved in a few minutes by a staff member. At the end of the ceremony, two staff members escorted the coffin through the curtain at the front. We then filed into another small room where we had refreshments, provided by the family. Street parking was available on Aldergrove Ave or S Andreasen Dr. There is a small gated lot behind the building, but I believe this is for staff and close family. I did not see any information on their web site about parking, but this would have been useful. A virtual video link was provided for family and friends who couldn't attend, but the camera wasn't very close and the audio wasn't the greatest, which was disappointing. I have witnessed 3 other funerals (in other locations) virtually and they have been better. The owner was not particularly present and maybe she does this to give the family space, but I personally would have liked her to have been more present and sort of act as a coordinator/conductor for the time we were there. Just my personal take. I hope this information is useful for anyone planning a cremation or attending one at Silver Linings. It is a convenient and intimate location for those in San Diego's North County.

I'll admit that I have been known to frequent a few cemeteries. They're peaceful, to say the least. Take a stroll through and enjoy the flowers on the recently visited graves, pull out a sketchbook and draw a headstone... too morbid? Of all the cemeteries I've visited, this one is by far my favorite. It's well maintained. I've been to a few with overgrown grass and weeds and that've just been depressing to look at and be at. This one is so different, it's actually pleasant, and the families I've run into here have been nothing but a pleasure to talk to

Yesterday, my friends and I attended a service and then participated in the Wreaths Across America…read moreat the Miramar National Cemetery, honoring our fallen heroes, as well as active military and veterans. At the close of the ceremony, we joined in placing a wreath at the tombstone of fallen heroes, saying their names out loud and keeping their memories alive. I was a bit more emotional than I thought that I would be. We take our freedom for granted and sometimes forget that many lives were lost in order to protect our nation. It was a moving experience and I'm glad that I was a part of it. I look forward to contributing to this in the years to come. For those who are unable to physically partake in the activity, there are ways to contribute such as monetary donations to supply the wreaths and charter buses that took hundreds of us to the cemetery.
