Great shoes for the most part; well-designed, classy looks, will last you a long time. I shop online but also go to my local store in Albuquerque quite a bit. One of my visits to NYC a couple of years ago I had a day to myself and visited this store. The salesperson was cold and humorless to the point of being rude. Fast forward I visited last week and encountered the same thing. If you're going to spend $300-500 for a pair of shoes one expects better service! After a long research and visits to different stores and brands I decided to go with AE. Decided to pay them a visit at their store at Rockefeller on Dec 18th. Upon walking inside I was greeted by William which is the Assistance Manager, walked around looking at a few styles they had on display, although I had my mind set on 2 pairs from my research. After a few minutes I asked for William's help to get me the first pair which is an iconic shoe. The Park Avenue Oxford Cap Toe (wore by a few US presidents in their inauguration ceremony) he made sure I got the right measurements, the feel and proper fit. Oh man!!! When I tell you it was magical the moment I tried that pair! Just WOW. The shoes just molded my foot in a way I haven't experienced before. We then spoke a bit about shoes, he told me a little about him, he has been working in the shoe industry for over 22 years (now my friends, that's loving what you do) after a few minutes talking and making sure that pair was the ONE! I proceeded to get a second pair for a more casual look, he showed me 2 pairs of brogues in a Walnut color way. I picked the Strand Cap-toe Oxford (Half Brogue) it was like love at first side! Haha. He smiled and said "you got great taste" William's customer service was superb, in a big city like New York where everyone is rushing, full of stress it's hard to connect with people. I'm pretty sure we (William and Me) had some fun chatting and just loving the shoes and stories while I was there shopping. I came out of the store more than happy; with a bag of shoes and all sort of things to make sure they last me a lifetime! Pay this location a visit, but remember! Do not rush! I found the Allen Edmonds storefront on 61 W. 49th St and stopped by before my dinner reservations. I was assisted by William McLaughlin, who managed to set me up with the shoes I wanted and needed - Park Avenue Cap-toe Oxford. Now, I rated this 5 stars because of one main reason, other than the fact I love their shoes...the one on one service that is provided at this store. Note: Allen Edmonds makes great shoes and would give them a 5/5. Sizing can be inconsistent though, as per my experience below, so would advise going into the store to get sized. Just go to the 55th & Madison location and not this one. The two sales reps I encountered today were incredibly pompous and condescending. Walked in for an exchange and to potentially look at other shoes, and ended up just returning them just because the conversation with these two sales reps was so damn painful. One rep (maybe a senior sales rep or manager) kept slowly pacing around the store grinning, making snarky comments and rolling his eyes to my requests. The other just kept resisting to everything I said - if I said my foot was sliding around he'd say "no they're not", if I said "could I try a different size" it'd be "no you shouldn't do that". After about 10 minutes I realized I could get nowhere with these guys and just opted to return the shoes. I'm empathetic to working in retail - it's tough dealing with rude customers and can be testing on your patience dealing with oblivious ones. But when someone enters your store, speaks cordially, and presents concerns, the bare minimum is to work with them and solve the issue. I don't even need smiles or a chippy attitude. Let's work together and so I can happily spend my money. I'd strongly urge AE Corporate or regional management to take a strong look at the staffing at this location. It's not the first time I've been mistreated here, and looking at some of the other comments here and on Google, perhaps these guys have something against Asians. I went in to this location to get a birthday gift for my father. I was helped by the manager Kesia. She was so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with picking out the perfect items. The store was clean and organized. My father has several pairs of Allen Edmonds that have lasted for years and years and when they start to wear it gets them resoled and they look brand new. I bought my first pair of AE here ever -- 10 years ago. The customer service is great and they're extremely helpful. I still can't get over the fact that they put your shoes on for you. However, that said, I had a very poor experience around two years ago. I bought a pair of AEs from out-of-state and wanted to return it. At first, the salesperson said they can't do it but then the manager came out and took the shoe from me and stating she'll take care of it. Long story short, fast forward three months, I never received my refund. I went back to the store and they said they had no record of it! I had to contact corporate and call the store where I originally bought the pair from to get my refund back! The other store was extremely responsive, I think he personally contacted corporate and they finally made me whole after months of back and forth. I've been to a few different AE locations in the city and the one by Rockefeller Center stands out as the best one. The customer service is excellent - and no, I don't mean a vapid "Hi welcome to X! How can I help you?" that any drone can give you at any store. The staff at this AE really go out of their way to make you feel like a VIP customer. I guess that's part of what buying a ~$400 shoe gets you, but like I said not all the locations have staff this good. Although I didn't purchase anything during my last visit there, the staff (including the manager on duty and the new associate-in-training) were very helpful in getting me all the answers I needed. Finally got a genuine pair of big boy shoes the other day. Despite being in a high traffic area, the store had only 2 other guest the entire time. The service was impeccable and the salesman was beyond helpful and knowledgable. Being this was my first pair of Allen Edmonds he went over all the perks and details. Pretty decent sized store. Saleswoman was helpful enough, tried a couple of upsells but nothing pushy. Kept telling her I thought I was a wider size but they don't stock them so she pretended I didn't suggest going to the E. Didn't have the color of the shoe I wanted in my size so they shipped it from the factory, was told I would get it in 3-4 days, came in 8. Overall, not bad but not overly impressed with the place either, notwithstanding already liking their shoes. Allen-Edmonds is a great option for those of us with wide feet because they carry up to a EEE width in many of their styles. I came in to try on a pair of double monkstraps in bourbon calf. They looked every bit as good in person as they did on the website. Unfortunately I noticed a considerable amount of heel slippage as I was walking around in them. My salesperson Zaina was very patient and helpful, as she suggested I try on multiple pairs in different sizes, and also had me try on some orthotics, which greatly improved the fit. Lastly, when I mentioned that my Discover IT card gives me 5% off all online purchases through December 31, she had no problem giving me the same discount on an in-store purchase. This review is not of the quality of the shoes, but the quality and caliber of employee AE has decided to hire. It is imperative for brick and mortar stores to have good customer service in this day in age. If you plan to step into an AE in the near future, there are many within the vicinity most likely that would grant better service. I was planning to return a pair of my husband's shoes due to incorrect width. There was a bit of wear, and to deem them nonreturnable is perfectly fine. But if you ask me if I am trying to return them for a boss, "because many bosses make their assistants return shoes." then NO, that is NOT fine. I find this extremely offensive, because 1. I am a younger Asian woman and 2. No point in our exchange did I indicate that I had a boss. It is an unbelievably misogynistic thing to assume, and I am baffled by this employee's zero self awareness. Then to add insult to injury he follows up with, "Sorry if I took you off guard." then proceeds to walk away without assisting me. Someone who is so utterly socially unaware of their own chauvinistic assumptions and utterly clueless of repercussions should not be working in a high end shoe store where experience is the business's bread and butter. I cannot tell you how great the staff is at this story. I have a long history with AE (well not that long maybe 6 years), but my partner and I have purchased at least 10 pairs from AE to date. I came in today with my oldest pair of McAllisters, my favorite most comfortable pair of shoes, and was helped by Estefania and the manager. The shoe ripped in a weird place so I stopped by just to ask why this would happen. I didn't expect them to exchange the shoe. I will definitely buy McAllisters in a different color as a thank you. This shoe is my favorite and I get constant compliments. They might cost a bit more, but they are made in America and super comfortable. read more

The prices are moderately high similar to Grensen prices but not as high as say Alden but you can always wait for a seasonal sale if you're patient. I bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds (Park Avenue) here back in March of 2012. It took some time to truly break in (over a month) but after that it felt great. 3 or 4 months in I noticed the heel starting to get detached from the sole. I read online that the company was trying on a new glue and other customers were having similar problems. I bought the shoes into the store and told Sergio (the store salesperson) about the heel issue and he immediately took care of it for me, no questions asked. He was very polite and I had my fixed shoes (with new vibram heels (which are great)) in the mail about a week later. Thanks Sergio for the great customer service! I bought another pair of Park Avenues from Nordstrom a few months later and it seems like the same issue is still around (this is after I had to send back the first pair because the heel was starting to detach after only a few weeks). These are great shoes at the right price, but they should really address their internal quality assurance process. 4 stars only because they fixed it with great customer service. read more

Thank you Allen Edmonds. This store has been my business shoes go to for a couple of years. Last Friday early morning, I had a shoe crisis. The black shoes I keep at the back of my closet and only wear infrequently with suits were worn out an ripped. My flight was in a couple of hours. I went to Allen Edmonds in Rock Center just before 9 am. They open early and were ready to help. I chose a pair of shoes I thought I liked. When I tried them on, I thought they looked odd and felt too narrow. No problem, the sales guy had already diagnosed my problem and picked out a couple of alternate pairs. And the pair he recommended were even part of their anniversary sale! He sold me on the matching belt too. (Beware the belt upsell. I think belts that have a detail that matches your shoes are cool but they can be pricey.) While I was paying, a button fell off my suit jacket. They walked with me to the tailor in the mall below Rock Center and offered to send the jacket to my office if the tailor couldn't get the job done right away. Theses are not inexpensive shoes, but they are high quality and sold with a high level of service. Most of their shoes can be re-crafted as they wear out, so they stay looking great and last for a long time. read more

First of all I walked in wearing my Sierra Nevada tank, which felt a little awkward at an Allen Edmonds store. It made no difference to Zaina, she was friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. Poor service on the part of the manager marred the whole experience. Manager of the store is haughty and snooty. It took ages for a sales person to speak to me. I buy AE all the time, had received a coupon but it had just expired, and the manager said that she would not make a concession to let me use the voucher. I can respect that decision, but not her attitude, which was condescending. The only exception to all this is Ms. Zaina Atanda-Owo, the sales person, who was helpful and courteous. As to the shoes, they are good. But after my experience at this store, I think I will stick with English shoes, like Church's. read more

I'm a little disappointed. I thought I was going to get to write the first Yelp review for this store location, but someone beat me to it. That's what I get for waiting. In contrast, and as you can tell by my 5 star review, I was not disappointed at all with the quality of the service or their product. I've never owned a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes. Normally, I just hit up DSW. But I wanted to step my game up. To be honest, I didn't even know much about AE, but I read an article which mentioned that most U.S. Presidents wear AE for their inauguration. Plus, AE is an American brand that's been around since 1922 and it's basically the only luxury men's shoe company producing shoes here in the USA. I thought that was pretty cool and I wanted to check them out. Within seconds of trying their shoes on, I knew I was wearing the best fitting shoes I've ever owned. Anna T., my sales associate, was fantastic and got me fitted into the perfect fit. AE's shoes are practically customized. She helped me find the right width, which was slightly narrower than standard and if I wanted I could've got 2 different sized shoes (my left foot being slightly longer than my right) without having to buy both pairs (but I didn't). Plus, when I wear them down, AE does full reconstruction. I'm really excited about my shoes. I'm glad to be joining an American tradition. Hell, I secretly want to work for them to help improve their marketing so more guys like me know where to go. And maybe to suggest wacky collaborations like an Allen Edmonds/Yankee Candle joint-branded 'leather' smelling candle. Something about that quality leather smell. Just feels good. read more

As a disclaimer I am in no way saying that AE makes poor shoes or that this is representative of all AE stores; however, I have serious gripes with the way I was treated here today. I have been looking into investing in some high end dress shoes for some time so I came into the store to browse. I went in, chose a pair of shoes I wanted to try on and proceeded to go up to one of the workers to ask for a 9.5. His response to me was "are you sure that's your size? That's not your size" He condescendingly explained to me that everyone had to be "fitted" and that these shoes are meant to "last ten years" as if I did not understand the quality of shoes I was buying. He went on to ask if I was wearing dress socks or athletic socks and when I told him I was wearing athletic socks he berated me saying, "you're going to need different socks." I asked about the fitting process and he replied making it known that "the fitting process usually occurs at the time of transaction," and mentioned an individual fitting must be done depending on the type of shoe I wanted. I found this completely illogical as it does not make sense to fit and purchase a shoe at the same time - what if I didn't like the way the shoe looked after I fitted it? Just as I was about to ask more about the fitting process itself, the man abruptly left to help a co worker and said "I will be back in a minute." Unhappy with the treatment I received, I left. I was out on a casual Friday so by no means was I wearing anything that would be considered fancy or high end and yes I did not understand the process for trying on shoes; however, I am a young professional working in NYC. I make enough to comfortably live and afford Manhattan rent. I could have purchased the shoes. I was the only customer in the store and very much interested in learning more about a quality shoe with hopes of purchasing a pair in the very near future. The treatment I received was completely unwarranted. There are numerous AE stores in the area so I recommend avoiding this one. read more

My customer service experience at this store was phenomenal. One person in particular, Liz, clearly "gets it" when it comes to representing a premium brand with premium service. Truly one of the best experiences... ever. The long story, in case you were curious, is as follows: About 3 months ago I purchased a pair of McAllisters in Bourbon from the AE website. Fast forward to about a week ago and I started to notice some heel and welt separation and some discoloration left to right. Even though I purchased the shoes from the website, I stopped into the store because I work around the block. Liz was more than happy to exchange my shoes for a new pair but noticed that I might actually be in the wrong size. Well, after a quick fitting, we determined I should be in a longer and narrower shoe. The store didn't have a pair in stock but the Madison Ave store did. She made all of the arrangements and all I had to do was stop by, smile, and walk out with my new pair of shoes. This alone would represent a top-notch experience but my story doesn't end there! I had purchased a pair of Strands in Walnut from Nordstrom.com during their Anniversary Sale about 3 weeks ago. These were in the "old" size and, after some wears, weren't as comfortable as I would have expected. Realizing it was a size issue after visiting the AE store a week ago, I quickly returned them and purchased the new size before the sale ended. They arrived yesterday and were impossibly tight. I've also in been in the process of concluding that the McAllisters were also a bit too narrow. Damn! I returned to the AE store for some help. Liz was there again and she (quite unnecessarily) apologized for leading me astray on the sizing. Not her fault by any measure but she offered to replace both pairs, even the ones bought through Nordstrom! Her only goal was to make my life easier. In the end, I was able to get the properly sized Walnut Strands from Nordstrom (they were in stock) and the Bourbon McAllisters should be at the AE store next week. read more

First off, my favorite footwear in the dress/suit department is Allen Edmonds, hands down. One of the many reasons it is my favorite would be the stores and the extraordinary customer service they provide. For this particular trip, I went in to try on the macniel 2.0. The store clerk sat me down and made sure I was comfortable before heading off to grab my desired size. Allen Edmonds provide you a shoe horn to try on the show so you don't have to painfully force your foot in there. The store clerk was very hands on, making sure that my shoe fit my feet in 5 different areas (as the should). I was very satisfied with my pair of shoes. However before we checked out, me and the store clerk noticed a slight imperfection in the interior shoe of the right shoe. It was very minor but the store clerk made a point that my shoes were perfect if it was to be mine. She went to the back room , brought out a new pair and inspected it twice before letting me pay. My father is a fanatic about the quality of Allen Edmonds shoes and it's service and I've never understood until I visited the store. I created a yelp account just to recommend to anyone in need of a pair of professional shoes that they go to this location in particular. I received Park Avenues for Christmas and didn't wear them until my first week of training only to realize they were too small. I came here and they spent half an hour in order to ensure I got the proper fit and let me exchange my current pair. The shoes look absolutely fantastic, feel great walking out the door and I know that with proper maintenance I'll be able to confidently wear these for the next decade as I embark on my professional career. He went out of his way to get me unusual sizes to fit my unusual feet, and all with a smile and personal conversation. At the end of my visit, I was in a good mood, have learned a lot more about my real shoe size and how to fit a shoe, and about shoe care. Most offensive customer service I have ever experienced. I own many pairs of AE's, although I usually purchase them online through their store since there is no retailer in my area. I was visiting NYC with my wife when we walked into the store, each of us holding Starbucks coffee. Upon entering the store, which was completely empty, the sales associate asked "Are those cups empty?". Puzzled, we responded "No, should we finish them before we come in?". "No, you can drink your coffee but we do not have any trash cans so you cannot throw them away once you finish". My wife was immediately upset and wanted to leave. It was raining out, however, and I had my heart set on a pair of Burgundy and Black Oxfords. I did not want to find another store. After trying on and purchasing the shoes and matching belt, the associate did indeed let us throw away our coffee. He never apologized for the off putting comment, nor treated us with any amount of respect. I finally got my shoes in the mail! Allen Edmond's leather is really soft. I was told that you really don't need to break in these shoes. And they were right! You barely have to break it in.
