Who knew? This small Chinese restaurant located in a side strip shopping center was a great find! We snuggled into a cozy booth and was greeted immediately by a friendly server(who may have been an owner?). He took our orders and they came out so fast, I thought they were for someone else! We had the eggs rolls, the hot Jasmine tea, a couple beers, pork fried rice with snow peas , beef and broccoli, and general tsao's tofu (we had some part-time vegetarians with us)! The dishes were delicious, big portions! We definitely had to take home a carton of rice home! The crispy noodles were fresh, but the fortune cookies were stale. We'd come back! The booth seat had a large area covered in tape, I was sat next to the bathrooms and I could smell them. my food took really long to come out . after eating 75% of the dish is when I found the roach in my food. the server said " oh, sorry"' place the bill on the table and walked off. I'll never eat at Allens roach ranch again. read more

We have been going to Allen's for over 20 years, about two years ago it exchanged owners. It went from a five start to a three star. Food is definitely not the same quality. I really like Allen's restaurant and everything about the service and ambience and the food is great. Better quality than other Chinese restaurants in Powhatan. However, my favorite dish has always been the Honey Crispy Twin. It has sweet honey chicken and shrimp. At $15.95, this is a treat for me but the last two times the last time I ordered, no shrimp and this time, 1 piece of shrimp. Very disappointing. read more

I lived in Powhatan for over 20 years and have been going to Allen's ever since they opened. I have a 5 star rating on here from 5 years ago. I moved in February and today I ordered food when I was in the area. Sadly the rice was undercooked and soggy, the General Tao's chicken was not crispy (soft batter fell off from being soggy), and the fried dumplings were also soft and not crispy. Our first visit was very good: we'll definitely return. Some of my favorites are, or seem to be, missing -- vegetables chow fun, honey-walnut prawns, but as an almost native San Franciscan my expectations are probably a bit too high. I did discuss the absence of honey-walnut prawns - with the manager (owner?). Allen's service was rapid and enthusiastically given. Dishes were hot and quickly served. Importantly, we were given ample time to finish the first course of dumplings before the main dishes arrived . The dining room is extraordinarily clean. I feel safe and confident eating there. I think Allen's could be a bit moe ambitious in the variety of their dishes-- for example one dish with salmon would enhance the menu. (I saw mostly shrimp and one dish with scallops. ). The servers were wonderfully attentive and courteous. I look forward to our next visit. read more

Food was great! Asked for one extra spicy and one not spicy and both were perfectly spiced. This was a ladies dinner at my besties fav in Powhatan and I was pleasantly surprised. Service was fast and friendly. Instead of the friend wontons some Chinese restaurants serve they give you some pickled cucumbers (MORE RED PEPPERS ALLENS) they were delish. I have always enjoyed this restaurant and even after ownership change I actually thought the food had gotten even better. That has all changed. Over our last four visits the food has progressively gotten worse. Food that should be moist (Orange Chicken for example) and delicious is suddenly dry. We ordered Shrimp with Lobster sauce on our last visit. The sauce had no lobster taste and had the consistency of water. I will admit they replaced our food but that was also not good. I switched to Mein Fun which was dry and overcooked. I'm not sure why the food has suddenly gone downhill. I hope the owners read this review and take action as it's time for us to stop visiting. I think a couple month break and try again to see if anything improves. Lastly I will say the service is very good and everyone is very friendly so all the issues are in the kitchen. The food after the ownership change was amazing. Whatever happened in the kitchen is the key to the decline in this restaurant. read more

20+ years ago, as recent transplants from SoCal, we decided to given Allen's a try. Orange County CA has a large Asian community with amazing and authentic foods, so our expectations were not so high. Allen's was good, really good, and became our go to for years! But with the change in owners we have noticed a big difference in the dish quality. The chicken (steamed or MooGoo Gai Pan) has a weird mushy texture and no flavor. If you like Americanized style, fried and drowning in sauce, you won't notice the difference. But if you try more authentic Cantonese style, you will. After 3 disappointing visits we won't be going back. read more

I would have rated this restaurant an "A" but had to lower the rating to B-. Ordered several wonton soups for takeout and they charged $4.25 plus tax per container for three small dumplings and a whole lotta broth. I almost suspect they took a small container of soup and emptied it into a larger one and just added broth. So, I recommend skipping the large wonton soup unless you might have a little sore throat and looking for mostly broth or just favor broth soup. Also they either forgot one order of rice for our takeout meal or combined two side orders of rice into one container without knowing if they were going to the same place to be conveniently shared. read more

Allen's was an excellent place for our family to stop by after a long day. They had welcoming and consistent service, matched with quick, hot, delicious food. I personally had the Governor's chicken, a touch spicier than General Tso's and with extra veggies. I really enjoyed my meal, as well as our fried dumpling appetizer. The one star is only because you have to give at least one to leave a review. I'm shocked by the good reviews and stars. And thanks a lot because we went based on the reviews. Are they from family? I can't even say enough negatives about this place. It's beyond reason that it is even still open. It's dark, dumpy, dirty, dated and it's obvious they don't care. No effort is put into this place. The waitress was so cranky she should have stayed home. When asked a question she would huff and just repeat herself. She seemed out out that we came in and bothered her to wait on us. The only reason we didn't leave then was THANKS to the great reviews. We figured the food must be worth it. SPOILER: It's not. Not even close. Ever eaten burnt noodles? How do you even burn noodles? Food was over cooked, bland, and over priced. Hands down one of the worst Chinese restaurants we have ever wasted our money and time on. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up. Amazing authentic Chinese food in the boonies? YES! We were overnight guests out in Powhatan a few years ago for a wedding and a local told us about this great Chinese restaurant nearby. I remember thinking "oh sure". Well, we tried it and we were amazed! It has a weird non-Chinese sounding name and is located in a strip mall with a Food Lion, but don't let that fool you. This place is great! Any time we're in the area (or even close) we make a point of stopping there. It's that good. While Allen's has all of your expected American-Chinese favorites, they also have specials that are beyond the ordinary fare you find at most Chinese restaurants. Both my wife and I have spent considerable time in China, so we have some appreciation of how real Chinese food looks and tastes. Everything we've there has has been tasty and fresh. The fried items are always crispy and not soggy. Even the wonton soup is above average. So unexpected to find this place in such a small town, but here it is! Give it a try. read more

Allen's is a strange name for Chinese, but this place Rocks! Great spring rolls with the best hot mustard I ever had. Had to ask for vinegar for the Hot and Sour soup, but once I spiced it up with black pepper and vinegar, it was first rate, clear and thin with all the right ingredients! My other test of a Chinese place is the Kung Pao. Got the shrimp, they were small but plentiful and the other ingredients were perfect, young celery etc. NOT smothered in Vidalia onions! We were seated quickly but our food had no seasoning. Our waitress was blunt and would not let us have a second to order she was trying to hurry up while we were deciding and took my plate out from in front of me and put my food in the box like I was a baby while I was still trying to eat. It's disappointing, because the food is good, but they make a lot of mistakes, and it's a lot of effort to get it fixed.
