I took our boys to see Into The Burrow about Peter Rabbit thinking it would be a kids show. It was so heavy and disappointing. My kids left so sad and confused. There were multiple songs about Peter's dead dad and how he missed his dad. Squirrel Nutkins tree was cut down and there was a song about him losing his home and all of the dead butterflies. The writers of this clearly have never been around children. There were other adult themes as well. It was inappropriate, so be careful before you bring your family. read more

Always had a great time here. The main Coca Cola Stage is small and doesn't have a bad seat. I've also seen plays in the hertz stage and amazed how it's always configured differently. Parking in the building is currently $25 and will take you a while to exit. There is a MARTA station right there and also other parking in the area. just an absolutely fabulous space where bound-for-Broadway shows incubate and refine for greatness. we went to see "Water for Elephants" and it was wonderful... even though the show itself needs work, the new Alliance space is the perfect setting where creatives can shine. terrible sound at Atlanta Symphony notwithstanding, the side-by-side pairing of both Symphony and Alliance is like having a Manhattan-show experience right here in Atlanta. we are very lucky to have such an important cultural experience here. if Florida is the 6th borough of Manhattan, Atlanta is the 7th--and yes I will die on that hill. I went to see "The Color Purple" when it was in previews, and it ended up a Broadway hit. go see any show at the Alliance and it's a de facto preview of what will open and thrive on Great White Way. read more

I've loved Alliance theater since the first time I was lucky enough to visit it. It's a beautiful venue with easily accessible parking. I've seen multiple shows here, but Christmas Carol definitely stands out. It's always a treat during the holiday season. I definitely recommend taking your family to see the play to get you all in the holiday spirit. There are also quite a few dining options nearby if you want to make it into an outing. I would recommend Saints + Counsil, Rumi's kitchen or Divan, all within walking distance. read more

We watched A Christmas Carol at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. We had a great time! The theatre had a modern feel : the balcony and boxes looked quite unusual and intricate, constructed with what looked like wicker. Acoustics were great ! We were able to hear everything clearly as though we were sitting right next to the performers. A couple of things we liked about the theatre : they let you inside the lobby area early, unlike other theaters, there are plenty of seating areas so that you don't need to stand until they open the doors and parking is very convenient (they have $40 valet or $18 self parking - we did self) . They also share their back patio with the Art museums and a cafe, so you can grab a cup of coffee or experience the museums without having to look for parking. The play was fantastic in itself - we thoroughly enjoyed it! read more

I cannot believe it's been at least fifteen years since I have visited the Alliance Theater. Shame on me! I love everything artsy, so it was such a pleasure to return and bring my students a touch of Shakespearean brilliance with a 21st century twist for the culture. We sat in the Hertz theater for a modern take on King Richard called "Seize the King." It was very engaging for my newbees to a live theater performance. The language was very different, but in a manner that will keep the interest and levels of engagement for moody teenagers highly entertained. The actors were mostly an African American cast which provided a diversity that is unprecedented in a Shakespearean play. I am glad I had the experience to see this play in the very innovative Alliance Theater. I must up my game and return to hear the symphony, another live performance, and other amazing shows on the playlist. read more

Went to see Pearl Cleage's Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessness Gorgeous at the Alliance Theatre. It was a lovely experience. The theater is well lit and the seats are very comfortable. Each seat has a great view of the stage, so there's no bad seat in the house. The design of the actual theatre is nice as well. I went with a large party and we all said we'd be coming back. *The theatre that we were in was only the second play in the newly renovated space. There's an orchestra pit that allows space for a full orchestra. The stage moves in to accommodate the musicians. It is lovely! read more

I highly recommend A Christmas Carol at The Alliance Theater. I try to go every year because it is such a wonderful play. It definitely gets you in the Christmas spirit and reminds you about the importance of giving. The production was high end with incredible special effects. The actors were quite talented and several had amazing singing voices. Just a warning, I don't think this show is for small children. The little boy in front of us was scared of the ghost and started crying. But I do think it is a great show for teenagers and adults! I will go back next year! read more

Great place!!! They have wonderful shows! I've taken students there and gone there on my personal time. The staff is friendly and they are very organized. They have several theaters. I usually park across the street in the parking garage because it's just less hassle and their parking garage is always full. I usually pay about $10 for parking. I could go on and on about my love of the Alliance Theatre but I will spare you. I had seen a few shows here in years past but last year (2018-2019 season), I got an Impromptu Pass, which is a one-time price to go to as many shows as you want (with some restrictions, such as not being able to go during opening week and only being able to reserve your seat for a performance seven days or less in person or via phone only). This pass opened my eyes to the talent and magic of the Alliance Theatre productions. I have left crying from numerous shows and those that particularly stuck out to me last season include "Goodnight, Tyler," "Knead," "Approval Junkie," and "Ever After." I thought I wasn't a musical fan until I saw "Ever After," which was put on in the gorgeous Coca-Cola Stage. I believe that the other aforementioned shows were on the Hertz Stage, which is a cozy, intimate space. Additionally, to kick off the season last year, I was dazzled by the Theatre's take on "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which was done at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. I was just giddy at the thought of the collaboration, but the execution of the show had my salivating for more. I will get another Impromptu Pass this season and I can't wait to see what's in store. My family and I are also season ticket holders with the Theatre for the Very Young, an affordable way for adults to introduce children from zero to five years of age to the performing arts. My son has seen performances of ballet, opera, and play and the Alliance Theatre program for younger patrons has contributed to his enjoyment of the performing arts. If you have not gone to a show at the Alliance Theatre, get yourself to one soon! read more

Alliance Theater is not only a performance venue, it also holds acting classes - both stage and film. It also holds classes on other acting-related ventures, such as voice over work, play writing, preparing for an audition, etc. I'm taking the basic acting class since this is my first time doing something like this. And although I'm a bit shy in front of others (hard to believe for those who know me), I'm really loving this class. I can understand why so many people fall in love with it and are willing to be a "starving artist" to act. I'm learning a lot in a short amount of time - how to make space for the other actors, the goal of the scene, warm up exercises for the body and voice, how to connect with my partner in the scene. The whole process is truly gorgeous. Cost is relative, but I think it's expensive at $227 (including website pay transaction fee of $4) for 6 classes. You can park at the Arts Center at a discount of $3, but I think that for what you're paying for the class, students should be able to park for free. I also think 10 classes would be more reasonable at that cost. If you want to try out a class before committing the cash, Alliance sometimes offers free workshops. I don't know how often those happen, but I took the free class in October. I'm sure there are other places that have acting classes in Atlanta, but all the people who said I should take a class recommended Alliance, and since one of those people is a working stage actor, I took the recommendation I was given. And although the cost is high for me, I'm really enjoying the experience, so I'm not going to complain. Not too much anyway. :-) read more

I saw "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" for $20 last night! (Note: you have different ways to get the actual tx and my choice - box office pick up for a single ticket - adds $2.95; mail adds $5 and print-your-own is free) *Their website - http://alliancetheatre.org/ - is easy to navigate and has a complete schedule of dates/times/prices for months into 2016 - including shows at other theatres like Dad's Garage, where I'm going for a show in Dec! *Such a pretty space! *Volunteers man the doors, etc and all whom I encountered were super friendly. *Get balcony tx! The least expensive and great view. When it's not full, it's no problem to change your assigned seat. *I didn't park (thanks, Uber!) but you can add a parking charge to your online purchase ($15 in the adjoining garage). I saw Eavesdropping at Black Box theatre at Woodruff/Alliance Theatre tonight. A tiny theatre nestled on the 3d floor hosts original productions featuring professional and starting young actors, local composers and exuberance! The show my friends and I saw was a musical based on overheard conversations at a coffee shoppe. Some of us were set decor by sitting at a table in the coffee shop set. It was incredible sitting among and with the actors as they sang and moved about the stage. We laughed and had a blast - you could even order coffee and pastries on set before the show started! This show is so much fun - the cast are participating in an acting workshop - and they were so talented. The composer, John Cerreta created great music and scripted lyrics based on observations & conversations that were authentic and moving and funny. James Baskin, Catie Counsel and Kelsi Adams were standouts in acting and singing but truly all of the actors contributed beautifully to the production. Director CW Thornton did an amazing job of bringing together all the elements of the production. Wonderful voices, great music - this experience reminded me of the creative energy and spontaneity that drew me to move to Atlanta in the 80s. Good show! Definitely worth checking out! read more

Watched a Christmas Carol 2021. Let me tell you that if you sit on the balcony level there isn't a bad seat at all! The chairs are comfortable and the show was great. The background setting was AWSOME! The way the actors moved through the scenes without issues gives great credit to the designers of the background. The cast was great! Everyone played their part to perfection. The special effects were outstanding! I will be visiting more often for future theater plays. Make sure you get your Covid test within 72 hours of your show or provide proof of vac status. I overheard a lot of people forgetting their vac cards at the door. Lastly, try to arrive 30 minutes early. Traffic was kinda ugly around the Alliance Theater. read more

What can I say about the Alliance Theater, except that they can put on quite the lovely holiday play. I had the pleasure of attending a performance of A Christmas Carol after Thanksgiving with my mother and sister. I'd received a voucher for 2 free tickets for a show...all I had to do was contact this lady (her name was on the voucher so I'll leave that detail out) by email at the box office and we worked everything out by email. She was very helpful and so nice because I told her I needed a third ticket and would pay for it when we arrived, but she gave us an extra ticket for free which I was very happy about!! We parked in the garage which was 12$ I think or 10... umm 12. We also got turned around leaving the garage, but finally made our way to the entrance by following the signs. We'd gotten there early to pick up our tickets, so we stood around in the lobby until they opened the doors. On that particular night, it was extremely fun standing in the lobby as there was a sci-fi symphony performance and several Star Wars characters were walking around. It was very funny as the Storm Troopers were walking around taking pictures with people, helping guests behind the desk, and just bothering people as one decided to stand beside me and poke me with his gun. When they finally opened the doors, we were directed to our seats, which were in the middle of the row (a bit of a setback not being able to choose your own seats when they're free) but not a big deal, we didn't get up during the performance anyway. I must admit I did have a few issues that night, nothing major, but they were: the show not starting on time, the ushers stopping one poor person from taking pictures when everyone else was taking pictures before the show started... (either enforce the rule of no photos for everyone or just let it go), the extremely narrow rows...(so glad we're short folks in my family or it would've been very uncomfortable), the talking (there were extremely loud children behind us, whose mother didn't think they were interrupting the show for us and others whispering as well... You can easily hear conversations of others around you which distracts from the performance), and lastly during some parts of the play, we missed lines as it was hard to hear and the actor just wasn't quite loud enough (for example the sweet child starting the play with a song... couldn't hear or understand a word he sang). Other than my few complaints... it was actually a fun night. We enjoyed the play and tiny Tim brought a tear to the eye at the end of the play. It had great music and great acting and I also admit it was funny when the third ghost scared the little girl in front of us....sorry I'm cruel lol. Anyway I would not mind going to see the play again next year, minus the vouchers as well. read more

I have seen several musicals, plays, and symphony in here and I am yet to have a bad experience. I have been to fox and honestly, I enjoy the Alliance Theatre more. First of all, the performances here are wonderful! I actually like smaller theaters simply because it allows you to still enjoy the show even though you are in the last row. On some shows, I actually prefer to sit on the very top since I feel like Im just looking down on a pretty picture. Also, I am so grateful for the student tickets and the rush tickets that allows you to purchase last minute tickets for a fraction of the original cost. These tickets are more like 'standby' and you will almost never get them on opening nights or holidays. However, student tickets are 10 and rush is 20 bucks, compare to the normal 25-40 bucks + taxes and other fees for the cheapest tickets. I like to go on Sunday evenings with my mom for the free parking right in front :) read more

With last minute tickets to Barry Manilow's production of "Harmony" -- great show, by the way! -- we couldn't have sat further back if we tried. But y'know, we saw everything, we heard everything and the rear balcony seats were pretty darn good. (I don't think I could say the same for the Fox.) The Alliance is a great theater: comfortable, with stadium style seats so the tall person in front doesn't obstruct one's view. All in all, an excellent venue to see any number of productions. read more

I attended Blues for an Alabama Sky with friends and the play was really good. The set was wonderful and the actors put on a fantastic show. The theatre seats are very uncomfortable, small and too close to each other (not enough leg room in front of you). I was crammed in between my friend and a man to my right. During intermission, the room was full of people who needed to stretch their legs and backs. It just wasn't cozy at all. as much as I enjoyed the play, I'm not sure if I would come back to see another show because of it. There is ample parking (many levels), however they could use a few more elevators to take you back to the parking decks. They were jam packed each time so we ended up taking the stairs. read more

A nice medium sized theater- acoustics and sightlines were great from where I sat (middle of orchestra). I was here to see Sondheim's Into the Woods- the stage was a quirky, dark & elaborate set that fit the "fairy-tales-gone-awry" storyline of the musical. The show selection at this theatre hits a large variety of interests from well-known to obscure, and from comedic to very dramatic. I've been to the larger auditorium space where the Atlanta Symphony plays many times, but it was my first time in the smaller, more intimate Alliance. I like! Support the arts! read more

Not a bad seat in the house. We recently went to a show where we had the back balcony row - but the theater size, which seats 770, is small enough to still have a good view of the stage (assuming your eyesight is average or above average). The refreshment service has a full bar, some yummy 'movie style' snacks, and even some sandwiches if you need to furtively munch on one to keep stomach hunger grumbles quiet during the show. Unless you have supersecret parking spots, you will end up paying ten bucks for a spot in the deck - at least for us, our 'free parking search' efforts came up dry. The Alliance also offers acting classes for both youths and adults. There are also a few package deal options, if you'd like to buy theater tickets for the season. read more

I was given a voice over class here for Christmas. I was really looking forward to the class, but unfortunately I ended up in a situation where I needed to reschedule the class. (Travel, and Sever Illness) When I called, I was told I should enroll in a different class because they didn't have any other voice classes scheduled in June, they would not hold a credit until the next one is schedule and if I canceled I would be subject to a $50 drop fee (on a $125 class). I would have happily rescheduled, or waiting until the class was available. However that wasn't an option. So I was left with two choices. Pay a 40% penalty for dropping the class, or take a class I have no interest in. Based on other reviews I'm sure the class would have been fine, but I wouldn't know. Sadly, because of this I also do not feel compelled to take any classes there in the future. read more

I'm grateful Atlanta has the Alliance Theatre, and I've been a subscriber since 2004. Each season brings new plays, often world premieres, and I am consistently impressed with the level of talent in each production, even if I don't love every show. Seating is great - even all the way in the back - but I do prefer the center orchestra rows. Parking is much less of a hassle these days, now that the garage is finished and they offer valet service as well. (I normally walk, though, since I live in midtown.) There's usually something for everyone in a single season at the Alliance, but be sure not to forget the plays on the smaller, underground Hertz stage, located two floors beneath the main stage. Some of the best shows of the season can be found here, and I highly recommend checking out "The Second City" comedy show if you haven't already. read more

Two other cars got very obnoxious about it. Several cars had these running lights on but we shut our car off and sat in the cold. Was not a fun night. Waste of money. Last time we do one of these. Went to go see "Doubt" last night and it was fantastic. This is a great play about, well, doubt. Doubt in faith, in yourself, in others. Without giving away too much, it's about a struggle between a priest and a nun at a Catholic school in the 50's. She suspects he's having an inappropriate relationship with the only black student at the school; he, of course, denies anything is going on - he's only helping the child adapt to his new surroundings. Well, it really gets good with the boy's mother steps in and make a surprising revelation - one that must be seen for yourself. Shocking and a big twist in the story. The other thing I really liked is the play is quick - probably about 1 hour 20 minutes - and there's no intermission. I really like that. I want to go to the theater more, but it seems like it's a 4 hour experience - exhausting! This was just right. It's one of those things you end up talking about for days afterwards and everyone will have a different opinion - really thought-provoking stuff. I highly recommend the play; had dinner at South City Kitchen beforehand, so it was a nice evening all around. Oh, and what is this trend of theater ending in "re" anyway? I love seeing productions at the Alliance, a great medium-sized theatre that's a part of the Woodruff Arts Center Complex. There are plenty of parking lots in the area, including valet options, and they've recently streamlined the payment procedures, which means you can exit a lot faster. My favorite deck is the one directly underneath the Alliance and ASO Hall that you enter off of Arts Center Way, just off 15th street. All the seats in the house are pretty good, though I would steer away from the balcony if you'll be with anyone who has difficulty handling steps or is scared of heights, as it's rather steep. This is one of the few performing arts venues in town that NEVER offers specials, groupons, scoutmobs, or Goldstar deals, so just go ahead and pay the box office price, because the shows will sell out before you find a discounted ticket. The only bad thing about the Alliance is that they allow patrons to bring their drinks and snacks inside the theatre during the show, which means you'll be enjoying the performance over the sounds and smells of your fellow arts patrons indulging in a few too many gin and tonics and potato chips (not the best combo). read more

As part of the Woodruff Art Center, along with the High Museum of Art and the Symphony Hall, the Alliance Theatre is an integral part of the art and culture for metro Atlanta. The Alliance Theatre is really the crown jewel of the Theater Scene in this city in many ways. The Alliance presents some of the very best in new and revived plays and musicals with casts and crews of the highest caliber. This institution has received a regional Tony award and a large number of their productions tend to find their path to Broadway and beyond. A visit to The Alliance can be rewarding and enjoyable however, the Art Center itself is beginning to show its age despite many remodels. The majority of the rest rooms are located on the second floor (apparently due to construction restrictions in the late '60s when the Center was built) and other aspects of the physical plant are in need of revitalization ... the elevators, for example, don't tend to work smoothly and have been known to trap patrons inside as curtain call is eminent (sometimes the doors will not open, no matter which button you push... This is no an urban myth, if it happens to you complain profusely... There is no need for Atlanta's "world class" art center to have faulty elevators, handicapped people depend on those things!!! ) The seats inside the theater itself could use some sprucing up in my opinion, but thats depending on the section you sit in. You should know that the interior seating is tiered, which means stairs for those who have trouble walking and may not be inclined to walk stairs. There is a paid parking garage under the Center complex that can get crowded quickly if there are several events taking place in the center. TIP: Parking alternatives can be found in nearby (paid) parking structures on 15th street that serve office buildings during the day. read more

This review is for "Theatre for the Very Young", the Alliance Theatre's program for children 18mo-5yr. The performance is in their Black Box Theatre on the 3 floor of the Woodruff Arts Center. For TFTVY, you check in and wait in a room nearby, where the children have an activity. They ask that you arrive 30 minutes early specifically to do the activity and to acclimate your child(ren) to the area. We attended "Waiting for Balloon" so each child was asked to draw a balloon (my 2 year old just scribbled in several colors). They also had a snowflake for each child to color for the victim of Sandy Hook. There were also some books that were balloon and winter themed for everyone to enjoy. Promptly at show time, the children were asked to line up with their balloons and were each given a string (kind of a ticket). We walked as a group around the corner to the theater. As we filed in, one of the 2 actors took the string from each child and asked that we sit on the wide, carpeted risers at the front. Children were encouraged to sit at the front, while the adults, particularly grandparents, were in the back. The performance was comprised of 3 actors, fun props and costumes, and lots of interaction. They did an excellent job of holding the children's attention for the entire 45 minutes. The actors engaged the entire audience, speaking in short simple phrases, both in English and in Spanish. My little guy can't even focus on Sesame Street for that long. Speaking of SS, we all agreed that it was very much an interactive learning experience, as if you were there for the taping of a simple educational show. Tickets are $10. The show seemed quite full, and it was the first one of this series, so I'd get them in advance to be sure to get a spot. read more
