It's a cozy restaurant in a nice neighborhood. The food was 10/10 amazing. Our favorites were the Duck and Pork Taco. The service there was super nice. Always explaining the dishes to us and making sure our water was refilled or if we wanted any other drinks. They always change their menu every 2-3 months so that their menu is always changing constantly. We got the 9 course tasting menu and it was worth every single penny. Make sure to book in advance so that way you can ensure you have a table. Overall will come again with friends and family. Also one of the cons of fine dining is that typically it takes so long to receive the next dish. I think we received a new dish every 10-15 minutes and if they saw us finished with one they were already preparing the next one to be served. read more

I love Alma, we've been 4 times and I genuinely think it is some of the most original and highest quality food and service in Montreal. We've eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants and I think Alma would easily net itself 1 or 2 stars in most cities, if not for one thing: their absolutely terrible wine pairings. We ate there recently and they served 10 back to back orange wine/macerations in a row. A couple were interesting and well paired, but most were just "ok" and having this many back to back just makes you wish for a balanced red or a crisp white to break things up. It felt like a wine pairing from someone that doesn't actually like or understand wine and so just thinks anything "funky" or "natural" is somehow better. We love the food and will be back, but until they resolve this we'd never get the pairing again. Hope they mix things up going forward! Five stars if they resolve this one thing! read more

Went here for our anniversary dinner. This is a small restaurant about 20 minutes from downtown Montréal. We arrived a bit before our reservation but were seated almost immediately as the restaurant had just opened for the evening. We were informed that more recently their menu has adopted more traditional Mexican cuisine than Spanish. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu. Our waiter was very friendly and when we asked him to suggest a wine, he obliged and did a great job as it was very good. We were started off with a cold corn based soup/broth served in a coconut shell. It had a nice flavor. Next we had oysters with squid ink and charred peppers. I am not a big raw oyster person, but these had interesting flavors. Next was a crab tostada with greens and an avocado jalapeño sauce. This was delicious and a nice change from the cold starters. Next we had a whole fish crudo rubbed in salt and lime with some other spices. This looked and tasted amazing and was so refreshing and good! Our second to last course was halibut steamed in banana leaf in a tomato olive sauce which was slightly spicy and salty. Lastly we finished with a beef carpaccio taco. This was the winner and so good! I could have eaten another couple of these. Overall, everything we had was very good and the wait staff was very attentive and nice. read more

I'm on the fence about this place. It is food that goes out of my comfort zone which I like but I didn't like what I ate. Not sure if it was because it was out of my comfort zone or it was bad. My uncle hosted his after wedding dinner here and so we were a group of 13 people separated in two tables on the terrace. The service was pretty bad in my opinion, this could be because I was at the kids table and so the waitress was a bit snobbier/careless because she knew we weren't paying. She would forget our drinks and/or not listen to what we wanted. It was a lengthy meal, with about 5-6 services. Lots of entrees: olives, asparagus, sausage, oysters. I did like that they included vegan options, since two of my cousins are vegan. There was a mushroom paste toast as their main meal. The other main meal was fish. I had to leave before dessert was served but it was cake. I would not come back. read more

I came here on a Wednesday night with my aunt. Too bad it had rained earlier that day because it would have been nice to sit on the terrace in front of the restaurant but unfortunately the tables and chairs were wet. We arrived promptly for our reservations at 6:30pm and it was already really busy. I felt we were a bit rushed to leave at 8:30 pm because they wanted us out for the second service. So I chugged the last of my wine and we left. We didn't have dessert but we were too full for dessert anyway. My aunt is on the paleo diet so she has a lot of dietary restrictions. She informed the waitress that she couldn't eat cheese but the waitress did not inform her that the chicory salad that she ordered had cheese in it. It was basically a Caesar salad with potatoes chips, cheese and anchovy dressing. I liked it because it tasted like a Caesar salad. It was my first time having chicory. Its a bit like kale but a tad bitter. I had the shrimp with chorizo. It was in a thick tomato sauce. My aunt could only eat the shrimp and chorizo without the sauce because bread had been blended into the sauce. I really enjoyed this dish. The shrimps were big too but sadly there were only three of them! I then shared the grilled octopus with patatas bravas. The octopus was good but the potatoes were just ok. There was a lot of it too! And because my aunt couldn't eat potatoes due to her diet I had to eat the whole thing! We also shared the whole fish with vegetables and lemon butter. I'm not a fish person but I agreed to order it because it was basically the only thing she could eat on the menu. There wasn't much meat on the fish and there was a couple of bones. The veggies were all cut up and consisted of carrot, asparagus and turnips among other things. The buttery sauce was what was good about this dish. At the end of the meal they gave us each a shot of homemade limoncello and butter cookies which honestly was a nice touch. I also had two glasses of white wine during dinner which was so good but unfortunately it was a private import so I wouldn't be able to get it at the SAAQ. I probably wouldn't come back but I do recommend it because I think it's worth a try. I think this restaurant would be a nice place to take a date.... taste some fabulous wine and share some plates. You definitely can't stay and talk afterwards because the restaurant gets busy and they want you out. Understandably so. read more

It's Friday night and the restaurant is full capacity! The venue located on a quiet residential street in Outremont is small and with a full house, especially warm. Our group of 8 was promptly welcome and seated near the window. As this is a wine bar, I was especially excited to try one of their many private imports. As others weren't into sharing bottles, the server was outstanding at recommending some wonderful wines by the glass; most are priced between 13$ and 14$ a glass; I enjoyed every drop and the recommendation were bang on! I love when a resto has their staff trained on wine pairings! Our group shared a variety of small plates. Although we wanted everything on the menu, we opted for the jambon and fennel for starters, the putanella, the burrata, the shrimp, two pasta dishes and whole sea bream. All the dishes were perfectly executed, delicious, and made with local and seasonal products; you can taste the freshness and love in every bite! The pasta really stood out; fresh, flavourful and rich. The burrata and roasted beets was exceptional as well. Yes, we barely had room left in our tummies but had to try the desserts! A blueberry sorbet with panna cotta, a brownie with candied orange, and a apple crumble compote. Although the brownie was way too sweet for my taste, the combination of flavours were super good! Plates are priced from 9$ to 29$, which makes for an affordable night out for quality food and service! Four stars mostly cause the space felt cramped, and way too warm; during the second service around 8:30, it was a little chaotic too, with way too many people packed in the front door, but overall, I really enjoyed my visit at this resto.I would love to go back when the terasse is open. read more

One of the very best! I called to see if there was a reservation available the night of, which I knew was going to be highly unlikely. The hostess said no, they were packed, but she would call me if there was a cancellation. I didn't expect anything, but then she actually called!! She was the sweetest. It was an insanely delicious dinner, everything on the menu is amazing, but my favorite was the anchovies on butter and bread. The wine is great, they bring out and let you try a few based on the type and flavor profile you're looking for, and the vibe and ambience is cozy and trendy. I love it here! We are regular visitors to Montreal and tried this place for the first time after seeing it was on the EnRoute Best New Restaurants list. Wine: 5/5. Great wine recommendations by the glass from our waitress. Had two nice natural reds. Food: 4/5. Most dishes were very good. Big bold flavours which is what I like but can see some people would find too much Service: 4/5 attentive service, good recommendations. So why only a 3 star review? The table was unacceptably tiny. They try to squeeze so many people in the tiny restaurant that we spent the entire meal juggling cutlery which kept falling off and watching the end of my fork so I didn't accidentally poke my dining companions. We had to sit with our feet to the side for the entire meal and even had to put our water glasses on the window sill. I'm ok with cozy but this, rather than the food, wine or service became the focus of our entire night unfortunately. Too bad as it's not a cheap meal to be less comfortable than a McDonalds. For this reason I would not come back sadly. If they change their restaurant configuration I would consider it again. read more

This is a fairly new opening on a charming street in Outremont from the Farine owners in the Mile-End. The cuisine is what I would call Catalonia/Pyrenees served in small plates to share (or not). I had two and that was enough (we didn't make it to dessert). The food was nothing short of phenomenal and is very affordable, considering the quality of the ingredients. On the table we had plates varying between grilled calamaris with squash blossoms, farfalles with horseradish, grilled shishito peppers and grilled asparagus. Fresh ingredients, great service, great wine suggestion from the owner (Natural wine, Le Fond De L'Air Est Rouge). Prices range from 8 to 25ish dollars for the more meatier plates. Loved it, terrasse is a little tight (we were three at a table clearly for two) but will definitely try to go back. read more

Where do I start. If you ever get a chance to travel to Spain then by all means try every Tapas resto you can find. I traveled to Barcelona in my twenties and all I can say is that this place took me back immediately. Suddenly I was 21 and trying Tapas for the first time in some tiny resto on a remote street off Las Ramblas. Alma truly brought it all back!!! I do think it's probably typically more Catalonian cuisine but it was kind of close what I experienced in Barcelona. OMGand the organic wines are phenomenal!!! read more

Sadly did not live up to my expectations. The good: The outdoor space is totally charming - it's on a quiet street, the tables are small but there's enough room to maneuver, lots of greenery. The not-so-good: Service was just okay - we had some minor misunderstandings, which could have been our fault... but added up to an awkward experience. For example: we asked for a wine recommendation, so the waiter brought out two bottles and poured us each a taste from the first bottle. We tasted it and said we liked it. The waiter immediately poured us each a full glass - not giving us a chance to say "wait, we'd like to try the other one too". We also had a misunderstanding about the food, which led us to get only three dishes. In the end, that turned out to be fine - we decided to go elsewhere for a snack. We got the anchovies on toast - usually an easy winner in my book, but these were served with a true half-inch thick layer of butter on the toast. If it had been a one-bite hors d'oeuvre I would have called it slightly overwhelming - as a 4-5 bite app it did not work for me. So salty, so fatty, so one-note. Next was the octopus with roasted potatoes and mayo - there was one healthy octopus tentacle, cooked nice and tender - and a pile of soft and bland potatoes soaking in an oily sauce with a sizeable scoop of mayo on top. The seasonings on the potatoes couldn't stand up to the grease, and it overall tasted buttery and salty. Finally, we got the cavatelli with local mushrooms and ricotta. First, there was no visible ricotta - just a light shaving of some hard cheese along with a cheese sauce. Went twice and my friend three times and on each occasion the hostess was abrasive and rigid. They are rude and not willing to accommodate anything... We would rather go to better restaurants in the city that actually treat you well and don't make you wait an hour to get the food you ordered on top of other issues i won't mention but are very odd! Left disappointed because of the very slow service on a sunday night 8 pm (waited 30 min to get 1st service, 40 minutes for 2nd and 1 hour to get 3rd service). When you have been waiting that long, you lose your appetite. The waitress was nice, apologized, gave a free dessert. To be honest, we just wanted to leave. The food was good, some plates were too salty and wine selection was great. The patatas bravas would have been better if the spicy mayonnaise was on the side, not directly on the potatoes as they were completely drenched. The octopus was so salty and needed to be balanced out with more sweet, the sauce made it even more salty. The tuna tartar and lobster were good. The two last plates weren't as tasty as I was not hungry anymore. Was it worth almost 200$ for 2 people ? Nope. Will we be returning soon? Nope. We went to Alma for our anniversary dinner. We tried (almost) every dish on the menu and everything was fresh and delicious. The space itself is cozy and casual (also loud, so be ready for that, it's a very small space). We got a wine suggested by the server based on our meal choices and it did not disappoint. It's set up to order a few dishes and share, because that's obvoiusly more fun, but I think the portions would be fine to order for 1 (a starter and a main, of course). The cavatelli and raviollini were amazing (the raviollini definitely my favorite of the night). The octopus was a show stopper, cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful (for someone that doesn't like octopus, I was VERY impressed). Home made ricotta, iberico ham, marinated olives, potatoes, everything was better than the last, and cooked beautifully. And you can't forget the bread! OHH the bread that is so dense, I probably could have just eaten that with all the sauces and been good to go. For dessert we had a sorbet of peach and plum and a cucumber granita. Both were delightfully refreshing and a perfect end to our gluttonous adventure. Alma is a must-visit experience for foodies visiting or living in Montreal. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming as are the staff. But the food and wine are the true stars of the show. Three of us ordered generously as we were excited to try it all, and not one thing was disappointing. Favorites are the lamb, cavatelli, burratta and jamon iberico. They found the perfect wine to pair with it and we ended the night with perhaps the best panna cotta I've ever had. Alma is a gem - don't miss this experience. read more

During my first visit to Montreal I visited Alma. This place is so cute and quaint. The staff is just lovely! So kind, sweet, checked on us all the time. The food was superb. The dishes change often, I'm told; I can only imagine what they'll have the next time I visit. I tried things I never would have ordered elsewhere and loved every single bite.
