Greeted as we arrived by the very amiable executive chef Massimo Piedmonte of Top Chef fame. The personable fun chef that loves to describe what he created for you is the same guy coming to your table and presenting some of the courses. But he gives his team the opportunity to shine as well. The open kitchen is an orchestra of professionals doing what they do very well. The first course was a fun ´antipasto ´ with a tartine of delicious things, some pate, pickled oyster mushroom, pickled asparagus, shaved pickled artichoke heart, pear with pickled mustard seeds, accompanied by sliced cotto ham (cured in house) and fresh burrata. The burrata was made in house a couple of hours ago and never saw a refrigerator. I should add that every ingredient except the caviar and truffle are sourced from Quebec (and chef is proud of that) and made in house. And the bread omg!!! Sour, seedy, toasty and divine with Normandy butter. The next course in this 6 course tasting was a delicious angolotti pasta with chanterelles and hazelnuts --while all the pairings were great, this one was paired with a Sicilian white that sat on the skins and turned a bit orange. Perfect acidity. The belly tuna with a delicious saffron butter sauce was the only course that fell a bit flat. Maybe I'm just not a fan of warmly cooked tuna belly. The Entrecôte was two slices of pink beef with a savory bordelaise sauce which worked very well with the Bordeaux wine. The first dessert called Pêche presented the humble peach in various forms from fresh to foamy to crunchy (my fav). The last bite was a take on tiramisu with a soaked sponge cake that incorporated marscarpone with kombucha --don't wrinkle your nose--it works. Give this reasonably priced (by NYC standards) tasting menu a try and revisit with that Top Chef that exuded nothing but positive energy and a desire to feed you. read more

We had an overall great experience --excellent food, service, and the view from the chef's table was wonderful for watching the magic unfold. Disappointing... Three dishes were too salty, I mean way too salty, even the wine pairing could not temper it or contrast in some way to alter the taste. Overpowering saltiness. So disappointed this place had such a high rating... Best dish were the charcuterie dish and the two dessert black apple and cassis Mille feuile. Honorable mention would be the scallops but only with the wine pairing, without the wine it is a bit too tangy. Entrecôte and fish dish had a sauce that was way too salty. What a disappointment because the meat and fish were cooked perfectly and had good texture only to be ruined by the salt. The tetela, The triangular wrap with mole sauce inside was also too salty also... agnolotti was good. Best simple thing was the fresh burrata. The service was fine. The food was meh... probably not worst meal I've had in a while but most certainly the most disappointing... and the disappointment overshadows everything else that was good... A very mixed experience. A few dishes, the cocktails, and our waitress were all excellent. General vibe of the restaurant was great as well, however our dinner took over 3 1/2 hours, one of the chefs came over to apologize about the wait but the speed of service did not change much. Other tables sat down after us and left before us. At one point it took just over 40 minutes for 2 people at our table to get a course that consisted of 3 small scallops. (that being said the dish was great). I found myself getting hungry between courses and by the end of it I was pretty tired and wanting to just go home. I really didn't anticipate a 3+ hour dining experience, we didn't end up leaving until 11:30 or so. Portion sizes were not consistent across the same dishes at the same table. During the pasta course my mother received probably about triple the amount of pasta compared to me. The pasta was delicious. Some of the dishes were just fine while others were incredible. In particular the fish and the rib eye were nothing really to write home about. Music and general vibe was nice but we ended up leaving somewhat hungry and too tired to want to search for something else. Our waitress was very nice and I don't believe the speed of service had anything to do with her but its hard to tell. I think this would have a been a much better experience if I was somewhat prepared for the long meal and if I didn't make the reservation for 7:45 pm. Overall for the price paid I wasn't thrilled about the attention to certain details and slow service. read more

This restaurant offers only a 7-courses menus, with a +1 option. We took the 7+1 menu. The pros: two of the dishes (pâté en croute and smoked duck) were mind blowing. The seafood raviolis were also excellent. Service was friendly and ambiance is good. The cons: the entire experience lasted four hours. Way too slow. Also, the wine pairing was subpar. Finally, a couple of the dishes were less impressive. Perfect place if you want to have four hours with friends. However, order a good bottle rather than take the wine pairing. If you're in a hurry, however, go somewhere else. read more

I sincerely hope the owner reads this, because our experience was simply atrocious. Waiting an hour between each bite is unacceptable. We arrived at 6:00 PM, and by 11:00 PM, we had only received three small bites. One of them was so inedible that I had to go to the bathroom to spit it out -- it was literally impossible to swallow. Hungry and discouraged, our plans to go out and enjoy the rest of the evening were ruined. All that was left was to pay a bill of several hundred dollars... and conclude this so-called "experience." When we asked the server about the slow pace of the service, he admitted the kitchen was poorly prepared: too many employees without direction, an ill-thought-out menu, and an overstaffed but disorganized kitchen team. Amazing evening at Cabaret L'enfer where I indulged in the most delicious tasting menu with fellow foodies. Yes, opt in for the wine pairing and I promise you'll be blown away! Enjoy an 8 course menu spotlighting fresh and local produce, featuring fermented components with a touch of Italian flair. Let's not forget the impeccable service! Although the menu may seem fancy and at a higher price point, the restaurant's ambiance was far from pretentious and stuffy. Genuinely incredible meal. Great service, good wine pairings, and some of the best food I've had in Montreal in a long time. I used to really love Mousso until they changed their format - it feels like cabaret l'enfer is their spiritual successor. Inventive while being traditional at the same time. The upleveled charcuterie plate is a great start, the home made Burrata is next level. The pasta is insane. The charcoal yakitori grill makes all the fish and meat smokey and extra delicious. The desserts were understated (ie not overly sweet, but i like that) and a great finish. Eating at the counter interacting with the chef and cooks was pleasant, as everyone was authentic and into their craft. Chef Masssimo was generous and outgoing. Terrible experience. Wish we'd never gone here and wasted a night of dining while visiting Montréal. We booked 2 weeks in advance and let the restaurant know in the provided section about food allergies, then followed up after the confirmation email was sent to ask that those were noted, no response. Then called the day before and left a message to make sure we did our part to notify, no response. When we arrived no one was aware of the food allergies. Not a good way to start. Then we were tricked by the waiter into spending more money than we wanted to with menu choices that held a different price than the fixed one, but he sold as "options." He also served me two $50 glasses of champagne, one that he called a sparkling wine to start me off before the tasting, and one that he said went with the scallop course and poured as if it was included. We had already paid for the wine tasting menu, and I was served the first $50 glass as part of the wine tasting menu at the end of the meal, why sell me a $50 glass of champagne if I'm tasting it later, but call it a sparkling wine? To cheat us out of more $. I was also served 2 courses with dairy in it, which I'm allergic to, which we found out after we'd started eating them. The first waiter we had left halfway through, and the person who then took care of us was absent for the start of 2 out of 3 of our final courses, my wine pairing being topped off as apology, but we missed some information that could have been helpful to my health. When we spoke to the owner Massimo about all of this the day after, he said he was embarrassed and apologized, he said it was distasteful and dishonest, it was. He promised to follow up, he didn't. He then promised to send a gift card and a refund for the wine, he didn't. It's been a month. To be extorted than lied to has been a horrible experience. What's most disappointing is being lied to by Massimo in the aftermath. I hope they do right by future customers, no one should be given this kind of run around. To note- We paid the bill at the time and tipped 20% as we always do, but did bring up the issue with the 2nd waiter before we left. He offered to give us our tip money back ,which we refused, then insisted we take a bottle of champagne, $59 listed price online. We were traveling so the bottle of wine was a hindrance as we weren't checking bags... we gifted it to the concierge at our hotel for taking good care of us.
