Read the bad reviews and almost scared us off, almost. My wife and I used to come here all the time when we were in college a decade ago, we were in town and thought it would be fun to get it again and were hesitant when we read so many bad reviews but were hungry and went anyway. Are the prices a little steep? Yeah a little, but the food was just as good as we remembered and service was great, our kids loved it too. Will definitely stop again next time we're in town. I had never eaten here before so on the suggestion from my sister I stopped last Saturday evening. I ordered a Lg Plate Lava Bites and pea salad for my sister. I had Garden veggies with Pork on noodles. I thought my meal was fabulous. The .kpork was tender with the perfect amount of teriaki and a tasty smokey bbq flavor. So good! The Lava Bites were so fricken hot!! But my sister loved her meal. Thank you! I did have to wait quite awhile in the drive thru 15 mins or more. But the guy running the show was very nice. Would've liked to give a higher rating considering their teriyaki chicken was actually quite good - the meat was pretty tender and flavorful, BUT the kalua pork was so unbelievably salty to the point where it was borderline inedible. I mixed it in with extra rice to try and dilute the salt and even that wasn't enough. The mac salad was a little too watery and didn't have much flavor. Also, the staff cooking in the back was not wearing a mask. If I went back, I would only get the teriyaki chicken with stir fried veggies. My fiance (boyfriend at the time) introduced me to this place a few years ago. I love putting my meat into buns when I get home like a pulled pork sandwich. Finally decided to try Aloha Island Grill after driving by all the time. Absolute and immediate regret after I opened my to go container. I ordered the "big plate" of chicken katsu with mac salad and it came to $18 and some change. As you can see from the picture with a standard plastic fork for scale, this was not a big portion, and it was about 80% white rice, 20% over fried chicken katsu. They were so overdone the small pieces were mostly just fried breading. It didn't even come with katsu sauce, they gave me ketchup and soy sauce. I thought the "big plate" for $18 would be shareable, but I was obviously mistaken. I would encourage anyone who's thinking about trying Aloha Island Grill to go literally anywhere else. The only, and I mean only, thing saving them for a one star rating is the guy running the drive through was friendly. I guess that counts for something. read more

I can't say I'm surprised that I didn't love eating here, many people have told me it's not as good as the south Aloha. The chicken was literally terrible- like I felt guilty eating it, it was overcooked & tough chewy. & the mac salad broke my heart (I'm picky on it & typically love theirs), it was mayo packed & lacked flavor plus they gave us A TON- like maybe they were trying to get rid of it. Love this place. The katsu chicken sandwich is good with lava sauce on the Mac. Fairly priced. I did have one bad experience here but I have to add it was 30 mins before closing and I could tell they were short handed for the late rush. I just went to the one on Francis, and ordered the Teriyaki beef with Pea Salad. It was very good, and the portions are huge and will have enough food for 2 meala. Outside: There are circular picnic - like tables outside that also have a shade umbrella option. You have a wonderful view of....well just the street but that's irrelevant. Drive-Thru: The Drive Thru Service is surprisingly fast. Today I decided to order a 5 piece musubi. Alex took my order - pulled up to the window...when Alex was ready to take my card I said "Actually, I'd also like a teriyaki Chicken half plate with mac". Without hesitating - Alex said - "ok, no problem". - ATTITUDE = PASS!!! Service: They are great here which adds to the atmosphere. Here is my only concern: The drive-thru exit can be a safety concern! Pulling out - the visibility is blocked by the seating area deck wall by the walkway (see pics). One would have to pull out further to see if it's safe to move into a lane. This becomes uncomfortable since this is a busy street. Overall impression: I do like this location and the attitudes of the staff. The taste is a little better than the one I get from Monroe St and the space here in and out is convenient. I don't normally start a review on a negative, but I have to call this out. Their credit system is on an iPad, and whether you pay inside or in the drive thru, a tip option comes up. The no tip button is small and kind of hard to see. I am not above giving tips, but I have never in my life given a tip in a drive thru. Think they need to revamp their system, because that just rubs me the wrong way. And while I am in this mode, I am curious why they still have a Taco John's etching on their door, considering they have been here for years now. The food here is pretty good, with one caveat. Don't get the Chicken Katsu. It is basically overcooked chicken nuggets with sauce on the side. Hard outside, too chewy inside. I love the teriyaki chicken though, and the teriyaki beef is great. Hawaiian mac salad and the fruit salad are great too. Fries are excellent, cooked perfectly and have just a hint of something sweet for taste interest. And prices are pretty good for the ridiculously large portions. So, if you stay away from the katsu, you should love Aloha Island Grill. read more

I've had a love/hate relationship with Aloha Island; sometimes their food is great other times not so much. Tonight was by far the worst experience I've had, and I will not be back. We ordered 8 plates and all were messed up. Charred, burned food and mushy rice that looked like it was recycled from leftover plates with bits of food mixed throughout. They shorted us a plate, and when we called them they said they would give us a couple free plates for messing up the order. Aloha Island grill is a local gem. I am not going to sit here and rave about it because it's just not that but it is good and worth trying. The food is pretty good but the best thing is you get huge portions. The small plate is enough food for two meals. My favorite is the Mac salad and their lava sauce is dope! I'm not a huge fan of pasta/potato salads but this Mac salad is really good! My go to meal here is the small plate with garlic chicken, rice and Mac salad and of course some lava sauce to dip and extra garlic sauce.
