Friday night and only one cook. We did see another guy smoking outside (on break, maybe). Had to wait ten minutes for the Lava Bites to be made and then they came to the small plate all in a bunch together; they were greasy, oversauced, AND there was beef mixed up in there. Mac salad was floppy and had too much mayo or whatever in it. On the plus side, the Kalua pork was excellent and I didn't get any gross fat blobs in the portion (I like last time we ate here well over three years ago). Front counter guy was really nice and professional and he did tell us when we ordered that there'd be a 10 min wait on the lava bites. And that lava sauce is mighty tasty. Overall experience however was mediocre and we'll probably wait another three years before coming back. read more

I gotta say, just moved to Spokane and came across this place. WOW...1st off the mac salad (local people can be brutal) was soooo ONO!! That is Hawaiian for yummy! I ordered the garlic chicken... aside from it being a little bit sweet DAYUUUUM I'm going back for more. Braddah Errol was a little generous and gave me small kine sample of the kalua pig and teri chicken and those were really good as well. By the way I asked for a small (mini) plate and the portion was substantial. Definitely going back and I do recommend this place. Decided after watching an episode of Diners Drive inns and Dives featuring Loco Moco we had to find some and fast! We decided to head to Aloha Island Grill for some traditional Hawaiian breakfast. We live about 10 minutes away so they were nice to take our order over the phone. We couldn't find the breakfast menu online anywhere so she talked us through our options. My husband got the Moco Loco with Portuguese sausage and I had the traditional burger patty. The food was simple and delicious! Recently opened sister location to the one on Monroe - bigger, a few more places to sit and dine. Friendly wait staff. Food wasn't prepared like it is on the islands, aside from the mac salad - which is similar. Kalua pork (overly salted) seemed more like smoked pork shoulder/pulled pork (vs steamed pork in banana leaves) and the teriyaki chicken was like smoked chicken thighs that had been placed on the grill to heat prior to serving - VERY overcooked and mealy/mushy in texture. The dark meat chicken should be toothsome and freshly grilled. Chicken katsu look like small fried dark meat "nuggets" vs a deep-fried thigh patty. Half-plates at $7.00 - $7.30 give you a fair portion of meat, a scoop of rice and a scoop of mac salad vs fruit salad (in yogurt) vs pea salad. It wasn't expensive by any means, but ~$20 after tax and tip for two half-lunch plates and one small drink seemed like there are better and tastier alternatives elsewhere. read more

Not that I have ever been to Hawaii or have their food, I claim that this place does a pretty nice job of feeding me so. The Place: Small, stereotypically decorated, does the job. This location has eat-in seating but no "high"-chair because all the tables are equipped to bar stool height. If you're going to get a high chair, get a "high" chair to fit your seats. Parents, be prepared to either have your child(ren) on your lap or staring at your knees. The Food: Delicious, different, and fresh. I love the 'Lava Bites' even though it takes about 8 extra minutes, I don't care - they're so worth it. It's like Hawaiian hot wing sauce on crispy bits of chicken! Their sides are salads - macaroni, pea, or fruit. The fruit salad is really good and something I like to give to the kid since they use fruit chunks. The Staff: Friendly, helpful, and fast. This is one of my favorite places for lunch or a quick dinner, this place is very much a mom and pop shop, I have meet and spoken with the owners. Both are born and raised in Spokane. I like the food here, from the teriyaki chicken to the garlic chicken. They do good burgers too but your really missing out if you get one. The mac salad is the best hands down with a bit of lava sauce on top. The fruit salad is also really good, reminds me of grandma used to make. Service is good and the staff is quite knowledgeable and can help the first timer find something they'll like. Portion size is generous and with a coke free style or beer you've got options for drinks. As far as the other reviewers saying that the food is inconsistent or not always good, they should remember that this is a local business not a chain restaurant. The cook preparing the food is not always the same one day to day. Variances in taste and texture should be appreciated as they imply originality and character. read more

Being forced to try poi (library paste) years ago, and seeing 'plate lunch' offerings on food/travel channel shows--and commenting on how unappetizing it all looked. Well, on first taste, it winds up being pretty good to me. You've had this food before. You and your high school/college buddies at 4AM after bingeing, and winding up in some random kitchen. All the exotic ingredients for the Loco Moco are there in the pantry and fridge. Rice, brown gravy, eggs, and some protein delivery system (meat, usually burger patty). Yup. It's total drunko-stoner food, and I ate every, starchy rice grain bit of it. They also have some very good house-made sauces, and their Lava Sauce was not too terribly hot, with absolutely great flavor. You, obviously, have to like teriyaki to like these dishes, but if you do, you won't be disappointed. But what you really need to try is the garlic chicken. Dear god that food was amazing. It's not often that I feel great about what I purchased. This was a very fair price for a large amount of food. It was delicious and very meaty. But then they switched to using an iPad to run credit cards and now they really put the screws to you. This used to be one of my top go-to places for a quick and tasty meal. I don't know what is going on with Aloha these days, but the quality has really tanked!! The last two times I've gone they have given me the wrong order. I didn't realize it until I got home. When I called to tell them, they were unapologetic. Not a way to treat a customer that you want to return. They also have a lot of new employees, which I think is the problem. They are unkind and seem annoyed with everyone who walks in the door. With that being said, my biggest complaint is the drastic change in portion size. I used to share a big plate with my husband, no problem. Leave it to this dump to "f" up a mother's day. My young daughter wanted to treat her mother to Mother's day dinner. She goes to this rip off of a restaurant and orders 3 $15 dollar large plates. She comes home with 3 small. So for a $45 dollar bill she received 6 scoops of white rice, 4 scoops of macaroni salad in a side box and 3 small meals, 2 Katsu chicken breast and 1 teriyaki beef about 3 oz. First impression on driving up to the restaurant is not good. The restaurant is small and not well maintained or clean. When I walked in, I realized the place is so small it had only 2 tables inside, which were both dirty. The place has a poorly placed heat pump that blows freezing cold air directly on you while eating. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and a musubi. They were out of tea, and ran out of musubi, so they had to marinate more. So I got a Diet Coke instead, and the meal came with macaroni salad. The chicken was awful. It was grisly and hard to chew. The flavor was just edible. The salad tasted even worse and I couldn't finish it was so bad. I won't be returning. read more

This is such a cool spot. When they are busy you are crammed into a teeny tiny lobby but the food is really good. I stay traditional with the teriyaki chicken. And I've stayed traditional since high school (2010). *Insert eye roll here* The pea salad is super good too. The only thing I don't love is I drive down Monroe on the weekdays to work in the morning, they empty smoke into the air that just smells like burnt food and it definitely feels like it shouldn't be so gross but it is. Our last experience was horrendous. We ordered a large plate and was asked if we wanted mac salad or fruit salad with our order (the plates only come with these options not the bowls, this is important later). We were given a small rice bowl. When we informed them of the mixup, they proceeded to argue that we were wrong and told we have to pay an additional $15 if we wanted what we originally ordered.
