Fantastic local Hawaiian fare, with some added mainland features! Located in a small corner of Reno, Aloha Shack is about 10 minutes away from downtown, and is worth the drive! They have all the favorite island dishes, from loco mocos, to katsu, musubis, and poke. They even have malasadas for dessert! The fun part is that they have some awesome chicken wings too! The dining room has plenty of tables for larger parties, and it is decorated beautifully with trophies from past wing competitions and a gallery wall of family portraits. We ordered Lumpia: these ain't the Shanghai ones that most people see, and I appreciate it very much! Full of meat and veggies, it comes crispy with a soy dipping sauce. Loco Moco Bowl: nice and thick brown gravy smother this bowl with a perfect over easy egg and 2 beef patties, all over some nice steamed short grain. Went here two days in a row. Was craving some chicken wings. And this place popped up on yelp. Not too far of a drive from lemon Valley, so I thought we're not try it. What we ordered: Day one: Chicken wings (teriyaki) Pancit Combo plate (chicken and pork) Day 2: Lumpia 2x loco moco The chicken wings were good. Combo plate both the chicken and pork were delicious . The pancit was kind of flavorless but spicy. My wife couldn't eat it because it was too spicy, when I tasted it, it just didn't have any real flavor other than a bit too salty and spicy. I do like spicy foods, but it was weird. Also, it was $30 for two loco moco and though they tasted good, I felt it was extremely expensive to have a hamburger patty and an egg on rice with gravy. So basically two eggs and two hamburger patties for $30... I did like the lumpia. The people are friendly. The Hawaiian barbecue and chicken wings were good. I will definitely come back for those. But even though the hamburger patty with egg and gravy had a good flavor, just really overpriced so I won't get that again. read more

Made the drive to see what hype was about and did not disappoint! Shack tots were hot, crispy, delish! Got the two protein combo with kalbi and shack chicken. Mac salad for the side for the combo. Got a side of poke because why not? And was a decent portion for a side! Everything came out hot (except the poke obviously) and can easily feed two people. Very casual vibe inside and they have merch you can purchase. The menu prices listed on here are not current. I think each item cost about $1 more now. Loved the service! I've been to Aloha Shack 3 times and have always been impressed. First two times I got the Kahlua Pork nachos and the patty melt and they were both delicious. This place is way out there by the old Sierra Safari zoo in a small strip mall. Had a chance to finally try it after hearing so many good things about the food and the food itself was quite good. Ordered the Ono Pork and my co worker ordered the short ribs. Loved everything about the Ono pork. Never been to Hawaii myself but the food reminded me of the really good teriyaki places you can find in the PNW, nicely seasoned and perfectly grilled. The mac salad was on point and even the bed of cabbage the meat sits on had a tasty dressing that had me almost licking the styrofoam container they serve it in. My partner said her ribs were excellent as well. Had to knock a star off for service because it was luke warm at best, both employees seemed to not want to be there. Even tried to start a conversation about the all the chicken wing trophies they have been awarded as I am a chicken wing fiend and I felt like I was bothering them by even asking. The pancit was good but not my favorite but I loved everything else. I also got a hat that says samoan. Very nice anniversary dinner with my husband. The staff were very nice. Came in on a Friday afternoon and the place was pretty empty. Came here specifically to try the lumpia because it had been so long since I had some. The Lumpia was decent but the real star was the chicken wings with ono sauce. Ono sauce is a mix of sriracha, honey, and sesame sauce and it was so delicious. Not too sweet and not too spicy. Hidden gem! Resturaunt is very clean and was playing great music walking in. I ordered the pancit and it is probably the best pancit I've ever had and that's hard to say growing up on it. This is my favorite Hawaiian BBQ in Reno. My favorite is the shack chicken. It's crunchy and has a wonderful sauce on it. For me, it's not too spicy. It comes with your choice of macaroni salad or cabbage salad. Haven't tried the cabbage salad because the macaroni is my favorite. I've always gotten takeout, so this the first time I've eaten here and it's pretty clean including the bathroom. Staff is pretty friendly even when we have takeout. Only bummer is they're closed on Sundays and Mondays. All in all I recommend this place highly. read more

Looking for a new lunch spot while on the job, Yelp pointed me in the right direction of Aloha Shack. There was actually a line of what looked like coworkers getting ready to place their order. Everything sounded amazing. I ordered the shack chicken and was torn between that and the Chicken Katsu or the chicken terriyaki. I had to order some lumpia too. I'm used to other Hawaiian places in town having Hawaaiian sodas as that hits the spot but they just had regular drinks. I ended up spending close to $30 (steep for a lunch) but everything was delicious. I place a tip but I guess since I got it to go I was called to the counter. Normally, when we come into Reno we always eat at our go to place. This time I felt like we should try something different. I suggested Hawaiian food. This place was off the beaten track but decided, based on reviews, it would be worth the drive. We arrived to find the place is more like a hole in the wall place. There was nobody there so we were hoping the reviews were true. Upon entering the place is pretty basic with some Hawaiian decor and an area where trophies were displayed. You walk up to a counter to order. We asked a few questions about what she recommended. We decided to give 3 things a try, the Chicken Katsu, The Shake Chicken and Teriyaki Chicken Veggie Bowl. Be prepared for your paying screen to ask for a tip but be aware you are walking up to place your order, getting your own drinks and bussing your own table. Tip or don't tip based on that. We sat down and waited. Food was ready in about 15 minutes. An employee brought our food in to go containers, brought napkins and forks. I've had Hawaiian food in different cities. My Katsu was very good but not the best I've tried. My husband liked his Shake Chicken, a generous portion given, but Hawaiian food isn't something he would ever suggest eating. My daughter's Teriyaki Chicken Bowl was great according to her. I actually didn't know that the Teriyaki Chicken bowl with veggies had rice at the bottom because I would have gotten that instead of the rice and macaroni salad that comes with the other entrees. We did have the employee ask how everything was which was nice. During our time there, there was at least 10 to go orders picked up and 2 other table of people sat down. I do recommend people in Reno, who want to try Hawaiian food, give this place a try. As for us, there are too many other places to try when we are in Reno unless we are in that area. read more

One of my favorite joints in town. Bonus points for it being family owned. Only downside is that it's way up off of Red Rock so I don't get them nearly as often as I'd like. However that's a small price to pay for always having great good and experiences. Another bonus is that they love to do specials here. I've always got my couple of go to items much of anywhere I go. But if you're a joint that has specials on deck I love it as a way to keep my experiences new and fresh no matter how many times I visit! Aloha shack itself is tucked into a tiny plaza just off the freeway. The lobby has a small dining area that can handle a few individual parties of people who wish to dine in. But most of the times I've been there takeout seems to be the more popular choice. They have a mostly open kitchen so you can see the grill and fryers in action. I always like open kitchen cause it satisfies my inner child's curiosity to watch the food being prepped. I really enjoy everything they serve here. I'm a sucker for chicken katsu, I know it's simple but it's a comfort food for me. I think my favorite thing here is Chris' 5 alarm chili. I could eat that stuff all day. And be warned if you don't like spice. I devoured it and it had my nose running but it was soooooo good! Do yourself a favor and make the drive. It's worth the trek. This is a rare gem, located right off of the freeway for easy access. Because this location opened at 11 am, it was perfect for brunch. I ordered the moco-loco and when I tasted the perfectly seasoned beef and thick gravy on my rice, it was "broke da mout" aka delicious!! The beef patties are actually hand formed and not the pre-prepped restaurant supply style. There is something to be said about the special care that goes into food prep and you can taste the Aloha in each bite. Our lunch group ate here a couple weeks ago and it was really good! We all ordered different plate lunches and everyone loved theirs. Our only complaint was that the pork was a little salty, but everything else was really good. We also had the fried banana rolls and they were super good. This is one of my go to spots at work since it's right around the corner. I've gotten both poke bowls numerous times and today I went with the Spicy Sriracha Mayo Tuna Bowl. I needed a little spice in my life and like how this bowl is simple with a few ingredients, yet really tasty. Sometimes poke bowls can have to many mix-ins and the integrity of the tuna bowl is lost. Aloha Shack gives a good sized portion of tuna and worth the price compared to say, Smith's Grocery, who also have poke bowls but are much smaller in portion and about the same price as Aloha. Aloha Shack might just be the best Hawaiian food in Reno! So good I had to make two visits in the same week! Visiting from the Bay Area, I happened to discover this spot here on Yelp prior to my arrival. My stomach was extremely happy that I paid them a visit. Not only is the quality of the food super fresh and delicious, the family running the show is also super friendly and provides service with an Aloha smile I went ahead and ordered a couple of classics. The Chicken Katsu which is served on a bed of cabbage with a side of rice and scoop of Mac salad. The mac salad was perfect. The Katsu breading was crispy and light. The sauce was slightly different that was I'm used to. It tasted like they added a mixture of bbq sauce and teriyaki or some other magical concoction. And also ordered the Loco Moco another classic favorite. Big portions of food! I wanted to save a second serving for home but the food was soooo good I finished it all in one sitting. Found this place close by and after seeing pix and reviews, I decided to give it a shot. When do much stuff looks good or I just can't decide, I always ask the staff. He suggested the teriyaki chicken and Kahlua pork first. Neither one of them was on my list, I was thinking of the chefs special beef, the kalbi ribs, or shack chicken. I put my faith in his hands to steer me right. I figured he's eaten here more times than any customer most likely, so gotta go with it. I'm not really a Kahlua pork fan, so it was a rough decision for me to agree to go with it. I've just always had bad experiences with it, especially when served in the banana leaf. Turns out I've only had bad Kahlua pork. This was juicy and flavorful, definitely the best I've had so far. The teriyaki chicken reminded me of teriyaki chicken at a good Japanese bento box place, not the type you would typically get at a L&L Hawaiian bbq. Nice thick juicy cuts with gold flavor. The surprise for me was how little rice it came with compared to most Hawaiian places. For me, that's not a bad thing since I try to stay away from too much carbs. There was a good amount of cabbage salad underneath the meat. Great friendly little spot and I'll be back next time I'm in town to visit my family.
