Manila Hong Kong Store and Kitchen falls firmly into the second category, and honestly that's exactly what a Saturday morning Filipino breakfast calls for. My family and I settled into the cozy, casual vibe without any fuss. This is not a place trying to be anything other than what it is, a neighborhood spot serving solid Filipino food at prices that don't require you to file a damage report afterward. We ordered tocino, fried bangus, and pork sisig, all served with rice, the way the Force intended. The tocino was sweet and caramelized in the right way, the bangus was crispy on the outside and flaky inside, and the sisig brought enough sizzle and flavor to round out the whole spread. We split a gulaman sago drink, which is exactly the kind of refreshing choice that makes you feel like you made a good decision even before the food arrives. Nothing on the table was going to earn a Michelin star, but everything was satisfying and made with care, which is a more honest measure of a good breakfast anyway. The store side of the operation is worth a browse too. Wide selection of Filipino market items, the kind of ingredients and snacks you're not finding at a regular grocery chain. If you want a Filipino store to go to , this is probably the closest store you are going to get to a seafood city here in Reno. I was actually pleasantly surprised with all the different stuff they have here for your Filipino comfort foods. I could not hold back on certain items because I knew I wouldn't be able to get them unless I drove 2 hours to Sac for seafood city. Pricing wise , I really can't tell as I do not go to Seafood city much, but I personally think the pricing here is decent especially with everything they have on inventory. It is pretty clean , organized , and easy to navigate certain sections. I also like that the restaurant is right next door if you are hungry and want to grab a meal. However I do think their selection is pretty limited with the basic: sinigang ang baboy and Longinisa with garlic fried rice. Also keep in mind if you are getting the sinigang it is about $17. Wish I had a collection of pictures for Manila Hong Kong but my review will have to do! This place is fantastic, great place to find some harder to get stuff, specifically if you are looking for Phillipino foods. The staff here is extremely welcoming and helpful, last time someone asked us what we were making and shared all of his personal tips to make the dish better. This was totally awesome and led to a kick ASS meal back at home, pork belly adobo.... I'll always keep coming back here, it's super clean and has great prices. Too bad last time the kitchen wasn't open, I would love to try it out one of these days. read more

It's hard moving from Sacramento where it's so diverse, and coming to Reno where this is pretty much the only Filipino grocery store you can find. When I can't make it out to Sacramento, during the winter months, I venture out to this store. Selection is decent, slightly overpriced. I like that the restaurant is connected inside but it's VERY limited on what they have. And the restaurant is very overpriced as well. Definitely not worth it for the portions you get. I stopped in here a few days ago. I haven't been here in a few years. They had a bunch of stuff like different Filipino foods. The problem was that a lot of their items didn't have prices on them. I also thought that some of their stuff was overpriced. I wanted to get some breads like pan de Sal but there were no prices listed. In the past I've brought things to the register without knowing the prices and it turned out that when they rang them up, the items were on the pricey side. I notified the lady at the cash register that most of the stuff I wanted to buy didn't have any prices on them. She told me to bring the items to the register and she could tell me. Well I didn't want to bring the whole store to the register. I ended up just buying some shrimp chips, a can of sardines, and some chocolate. I would've like to get some breads but there were no prices. Oh well, it saved me from buying unnecessary stuff that I don't need. I guess if I want baked goods, I'll just go to a Mexican grocery store/ bakery. They have way better selection and prices. And I'm pretty sure they would have pan de sal. read more

I don't often get to shop at this Asian market but I will occasionally drop by when I'm looking for particular Filipino sundries. The (new) store is very spacious and orderly, and offers a variety of items. The staff are helpful and nice, and the prices are pretty reasonable. After 11 months of my first review, we went back to this joint for our lunch. We were so disappointed. You can tell that the fried fish (tilapia) has been reheated many times, maybe it was on the heating shelf for 1-2 days. You can tell & taste the fish meat was old. On top of that, the tocino was swimming & looks like marinated in oil. Again, that tocino pork looks like been on the shelf, reheated many times that the meat is hella hard to chew. Not the same tasty food like 11 months ago. Try it & lemme know how it goes. Not coming back here everytime we're in Reno! read more

Quality/Quantity - Impulse dessert display of Carioca and Turon; so we bought one of each. Turon, banana lumpia, was so good - honey sweet. Carioca, deep fried Mochi rice balls - needs to be heated, then it would be so good. I was craving a Halo Halo, but I will get it on my next visit. Atmosphere - Local family business. Very clean. Clean bathroom, only one, the other one is saved for employees only. Asian food, Filipino focused. Fully staffed, they have a huge team working. Deli - see picture of all the hot ready foods. Bakery - I do NOT believe the baked goods are made in house; Valerio's Tropical Bake Shop is one of our favorite bakeries, especially for Ube bread. Our first time finding this store. I'm happy I was able to pick up the Mamasitas seasoning packets for calderata. I've been told the hot food is good and worth the wait. I've been coming here for years, but please make sure before u leave, CHECK YOUR ITEMS AND RECEIPT!! They've charged me, my sister & some of friends double in some products a few times. The owner is really nice & has always been helpful, but I'm not sure why this has been a daily occurrence. I haven't bought groceries here yet, but I have gotten food at the kitchen. The food isn't too pricey. They give pretty good portions. I ordered the big chicken legs, the lechon, and the pork sinigabg. The big chicken legs were very flavorful and I loved dipping it in the sweet chili sauce. The lechon was nice and crispy and the lechon sauce IS SO GOOD! No wonder they charge for extra. It's basically like gravy. The pork sinigang is very soothing. If you're sick, it'd be good to have. Ok, so this star rating is a little low but that does not mean I didn't like them. I went to have some Filipino food. I really wanted some pancit canton but they didn't have any today. When you first walk in it is a Polynesian Filipino grocery store. Very new to me. I am a quarter Samoan but know basically nothing as my Samoan grandma died when I was young. A lot of things I have never seen and not a lot of labels cause people who go there know what they are doing usually I think. Felt kind of silly. I grabbed a few groceries I have never had and some tonkatsu ramen which I know I like. I love to try new things. Then I went to the tiny restaurant and Aya and Lika (sorry I am sure that is misspelled as my phone died) helped me so much to pick things out. I had no idea what I was doing. I got lechon kawali (pork belly) and bangus fish (milk fish) and rice and beef nilaga (beef soup). My food was cold when I got home so not as good maybe but they let me sample the nilaga there while hot and it is yummy. All and all I would give this place points for great customer service from the very nice staff. Want to try again hopefully get some pancit. Also, am excited to try more food. Forgive me for not knowing more. I did have to Google the foods which was also fun learning. They do lose points for quality and cleanliness though. Very delicious and authentic recipes! My partner and I try the pork sinigang, pinakbet, chicken adobo, and lechon because we want to experience a variety of Filipino dishes. The food quality was awesome! We were pleased to find the Chicken was not dry, and the pork sinigang (soup) was hot and delicious as well. I've never been a huge fan of pinakbet, but their recipe made me rethink my past choices. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping in to try the best Filipino food in Reno. REMODELED REVIEW-- They definitely cleaned up a bit, but they still fail to price a majority of their items, and I even asked a worker the price of some items, but the only way to find out is to bring it to the cashier up front and have them scan it for you. Their prices are pretty high but they have some Filipino-unique items that the other Asian markets don't have, so I would come back for just those items, like their ube bread. After shopping the market, I went to their restaurant where they didn't have a menu and barely any labeling to tell you what you can even order. I just got an order of lumpia but I saw the person behind me order a combo plate which I totally would've got if i had any idea that I could lol. Oh well. Maybe next time. The lumpia order is supposed to come with 20 pieces but when I checked my order in the car, it was only 19 :( I debated whether or not to walk back for a single little lumpia, but since I did pay for a full order and I don't frequent this place, I trekked all the way back from the parking lot and got my 20th lumpia :) They are nice and crispy and come with a sweet chili sauce. Very fried and oily, not enough filling. Costco has a better lumpia option in their frozen section so I won't be back for this particular item, but I am willing to come back to try their pancit and whatever other unlabeled items they offer since you can't find many Filipino restaurants in Reno. Wow this new location is 100% better than the previous one. The store is so much more spacious, bright lighting, more cashiers, aisles are labeled, most of the items actually have prices on them and the dining area have more tables and chairs too! Manila Hongkong is an Asian market, mainly Filipino items, but they do have a wide selection of other Asian snacks, drinks, noodles and seasonings. I give it a 4 star because the kitchen side: Menu is still very limited. You get three- four kinds of entree and it seems like it's the same items over an over again (sinigang, tapa, fried fish, tocino) throughout the week. I think they would do so much better if they have more options in their menu because they can REALLY cook! It doesn't get as authentic as this! Really reminds me of home. This store moved into a new location inside Paradise Plaza. After walking through the store, there is more Filipino grocery than Hong Kong grocery. Many of the items can be used interchangeably but it still offers more Filipino products. There is a restaurant in the store was wasn't open. I also noticed that many items did not have a price so either you have to ask or don't care how much and just make the purchase. Hopefully they will get around to pricing everything soon. The produce selection was average and could be the case since it's the holiday. The store has a bakery section but was empty. The owner says they haven't started offering baked items but when they do, it will be brought in from California. Prices are fair compared to other Asian markets in the area. The entrance into the store is inviting, organized and clean. The owner is very polite and helpful. read more

If you want to get your Filipino cravings, this is the place to be (for me though). Haha! They have a new location at Oddie Blvd behind Pizza Plus near Jack in the box and Walgreens. It's a bigger place with bigger space to do your Asian grocery. They're still doing some finishing touches to putting prices on each items and isles to making it more accessible to customers. Stopped by this evening to pick up some things for a dish we were preparing. They had absolutely everything we needed from banana sauce to nata de coco. We got everything we needed and didn't even need to stop by the big grocery store. We used to frequent this store before they moved to buy some groceries for some of our recipes. We just moved to Reno from California. Finding staple food, including ingredients can be changeling if you're new to the area, or in our case new to the state. My first order of business is to search for such a spot, and I chose to try out Manila Hongkong due to its shopping diversity. My initial impression was that the place as a whole was neat and orderly. Noticing workers filling out shelves, etc. Another important component I noticed right away was the staff's friendliness, as I naturally glance around toward the checkout area. Overall I find that the store and eatery section is organized and the food crew is also quite friendly. I've already visited twice and found the food to be authentic to the taste. For anyone new in town looking for Filipino food and grocery, I highly recommend this establishment. read more

I want to like this place as it's the only Filipino market in the area, but with lackluster service and high prices it's hard to love.

The new location (on Oddie, same shopping center as Pizza Plus & Jack in the Box) is so nice! Much more spacious and organized than the other one. They have all the delicious Asian drinks and snacks. Also a really great butcher counter. The baked goods are brought in from San Francisco I believe. The ones I tried were really high quality. The other side of the store is a restaurant where they have Filipino food. I haven't tried it yet, but can't wait to! read more

Great store. They did a good job with the lay out as it was pretty easy to navigate & find what I needed. I wanted to get some specialty bread/pastry, but I noticed some of the bread were days past the sell by date... I know some people don't mind that, but I do! Some were still within the sell by dates, but the expired ones just threw me off. It's the only Filipino grocery store that I know of in the area so of course I will return, but I will prob stay away from the bread. read more

This is a family owned and operated business in the Reno Sparks area that's been offering Asian groceries and Filipino food for over 40 years. The first and only original Filipino store (Asian Exotica) that started back in the mid 80s located in a strip mall next to Reno High School. "Tita Alice" as who we've grown to know and love, always had a smile on her face. She made sure she accommodated all our grocery shopping needs whenever we'd go visit the store. Her children would often help assisting the guests and customers. I've gotten to know most of them and they are very helpful and simply amazing. The selections here are great. This is probably my favorite go to Filipino restaurant. Every time I crave for some Filipino food, I come here and they never disappoint! The ladies who works here are great and very hospitable. The food is delicious. I would recommend ordering the lucheon and longanisa. Their combo platter consists of two entrees and rice. Additionally, this place is also a Filipino market. I'm so glad that I found Manila Hong Kong because I was on a desperate search for Pan de Ube here in Reno! As you might have noticed, Asian markets in this area are few and far between, unfortunately. However, I was so happy to have stumbled across this wonderful shop! The Pan de Ube and other baked goods are actually shipped over from Valerio's Tropical Bakeshop in SSF (my local store, so awesome!). The bread still tasted very fresh and, although it was a little pricier than the Bay Area, it was sooo worth the journey up to Sparks. They also have so many other goodies, snacks, sauces, and fresh produce. The staff were super friendly and I will definitely be back for more! :D read more

My wife loves this store. Any time she wants to buy items to make a dish she comes here. There have been a couple of times my wife sent me to pick up some things, and the staff was accommodating to ensure I bought the correct items. There is a restaurant at the back of the store too. So, if a person wants to buy something already made verses cooking they have you covered also. read more

This is my go to store on Fridays! :) I love it like it's a great reminder of food and delicacies back home. The prices are reasonable and people are friendly. I love the food in their small eating center and i always enjoy their cooking! It's a great place to buy chorizo, fried fish and monggo. Their halo-halo is also recommended. read more
