Last night we went back to Chin Chin for the first time in quite a while and invited some friends to join us. We decided to order the combination family meal so everyone could try a variety of dishes. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted like old friends. Even though it had been a while since our last visit, the staff remembered us, which made us feel so welcome. I love the ambiance here. It's quaint, clean, and comfortable, with soft lighting, relaxing background music, and cozy booths that make it a perfect place to enjoy a meal and catch up with friends. We started with soup. I had the hot and sour soup, which is always my favorite, and our friends tried the flower soup, similar to egg drop soup, for the first time. They really enjoyed it! For appetizers, we shared the prawn, egg rolls, and crab Rangoon, and everything was delicious. For our main course, we enjoyed the Szechuan chicken, Hunan chicken, sesame chicken, and the vegetable plate. Every dish arrived hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The service was outstanding. Our server checked on us often, kept our water glasses full, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Chin Chin is probably one of the most overlooked Asian food destinations. It's truly a hidden gem. It's tucked away from high traffic visibility but once you're inside you feel like you landed in another world. The dark quiet atmosphere spotted with subtle but colorful lights. I am always recognized and greeted with a friendly smile. We normally go for their amazing lunch specials but this time we were dining with friends. We landed on the family special which at $17.00 per person each are able to select an entree with rice, soup and 3 appetizers. This was the second time I tried this restaurant since moving here from the Bay Area. Which of course automatically makes me a Chinese food snob! It's been about 4 years since the last time, I tried the food here and since I was hosting about 10 people at my home, I wanted to serve something simple and cost effective. My goto for this is Chinese food. I ordered chicken chow mein and stir fried mixed vegetables. It came in two trays and enough from probably closer to 15 people. So portions were good but the total bill was between $120-$130 about what I've come to expect here in Reno. Let's just say, I've traveled to several countries in Asia and lived most of my life in Northern CA eating quite a bit of Chinese food. This doesn't make my an expert but it would be fair to say, I am quite familiar with what is considered mainstream traditional Chinese cooking. But let's get to the food, with the caveat that I realize that everyone's preferences can vary widely when it comes to food. So my opinion is based on what one would find in Hong Kong and San Francisco. The chicken chow mein had all the correct ingredients, long noodles that were slightly thicker than say spaghetti, had the correct amount of softness without being mushy. Chicken was presented in slices and appeared to be white meat, there was some white onions thrown in there for some texture and flavor. Normally when I order chow mein, it isn't served with a brown "gravy". Not that this dish was swimming in it, but think of spaghetti with tomato sauce. Replace the red with medium dark brown and you get the picture. Now my guests who are Reno locals, thought it was great and flavorful. I would agree with the flavor part but it was much too saucy for my tastes. Would I try Chin Chin again for noodles? I'm not sure but the owner did state, they can make dishes any way I like, so perhaps I'll order off menu next time. The stir fried mixed vegetables is where I was most disappointed. Let's start with the ingredients. All were sliced in 2-3 inch pieces, which included button mushrooms, zuchinni, bamboo shoots, brocolli, carrots, and onions. This dish could have passed for a savory vegetable stew. There was a lot of gravy, so much so, that it colored all the vegetables brown, except for the carrots. The sauce had a slight "twang" to it, almost vinegar or worchester-like. Not my thing, I could not taste the individual flavors of the vegetables because of how heavy the sauce was. The brocolli was over cooked where the flowerette parts were pale. I prefer my vegetables to be just cooked, almost snappy. I would not order this dish again. No comments on the restaurant itself as both times I tried it, was for take out. So bottomline, would I try Chin Chin again? Yes but I will be very specific on how I would like my order prepared. I've never had a sugary sweet mongolian beef before and i hope i never have it again.It was spicy which is good but totally missed the mark for me, good thing we ordered for take out, I literally put it all in a pan and added soy sauce and chili garlic sauce to kill the overly sweet flavor of the dish. Also the beef was chewy, big pieces of tough meat that just needed to be cooked a bit more and reduced down to make them tender and pleasant to chew on. Love to try new places and anticipate loving each new experience. My first visit today trying Chin Chin restaurant. Lovely location but I was disappointed when inside. The decor seems very dated and cumbersome. I could not imagine coming here for dinner. We tried their lunch special. We had the hot and sour soup and also tried the egg drop. The soup was warm only, but served in a bowl larger than the norm and very delicious, both were enjoyed. A dish of fried won ton strips was presented with sides of mustard and sweet and sour sauce for dipping. Didn't eat it or need it. My son chose the chicken chow mein and I had the chicken with vegetables. The chow mein was normal but not exceptional. My chicken dish was not delicious. Normally this dish comes with a clear, light sauce and this was what I was expecting. The sauce it came in was dark and I found lumps of gelatinous sauce in my meal, not heated through to melt properly. I must say the decor was a real struggle for me. I found it so unappealing it detracted from everything. In all fairness, when we were there, there continued to be more people coming in and clearly many were repeat customers. I recently ordered a large meal from Chin Chin for my mother-in-law's birthday dinner. We live in Sparks, so it's close-ish to home and seemed to offer a variety of main dishes since MIL doesn't like spicy food, she's more of a sweet & sour, chow mein type of gal. Anyhoo, I ordered based on their online menu, which shows BBQ spare ribs, but apparently that's just a stock pic, those are not actually on their menu. My initial regret began when I walked into a very nearly empty dining room at 6:30pm on a Tues. My next wave of regret came when I checked out and was charged approx. $13 more (before tax & tip) than their posted prices online. Everything was packed, stapled & sealed so I wouldn't have the full depth of regret until I got home and unpacked everything. We ordered sweet & sour pork, chicken fried rice, pork chow mein, app sampler for 2, walnut shrimp, beef skewers and mongolian beef. Their online menu showed these items totaling $83. I was rang up at $96. The beef skewers were overcooked and tough. The fried shrimp were so overcooked and tough, almost burned. The 8 pieces of walnut shrimp were heavily breaded and in 1/2" of some thick mayo type sauce full of whitish pineapple pieces? and the walnuts had a rancid taste. The chicken fried rice was pale & oily. The chow mein was dark, flavorless in a pool of oil & had only a few green onion pieces, but lacked other veggies. The sweet & sour pork were microscopic pieces of overcooked pork heavily breaded, like a pork donut, and had the same pale whitish pineapple but came with a giant vat of red sauce, easily 4x the amount of sauce needed. The only dish we liked was the Mongolian beef and it's the 1 thing my MIL won't eat. Even teens didn't like the chow mein & fried rice it was so bland & greasy! And my teens usually clean up Chinese food! We discarded SO MUCH food for such a high bill. My MIL didn't spare her criticism of how disappointing this meal was, and I agree. The staff inside was pleasant, but thats the extent of the 2 stars. read more

This meal is worth more than what you pay for. 2 things I would make notice of this would be, request your steak cooked to your preference when ordering, and just ignore the fact you don't get the "hibachi" show... but enjoy the food because it's delicious!
