Since it was Sunday evening, a lot of Pensacola's Italian restaurants were closed. Bavarian Pensacola was opened and immediately went to the top of the list for the Yelp reviews and the unusual combination of German and Italian food. The restaurant is located in a neat downtown district. Parking is limited but we were fortunate to find a spot close to the shop. We walked in were immediately by a friendly hostess who offered any table we wanted to sit at. We chose a high top which had comfortable chairs. The interior of the restaurant was really interesting. The military vibe is everywhere and awesome. Photos and images celebrating our great armed service members with a local Pensacola flare adorned the walls where TV's weren't hung on. The atmosphere is open and pleasantly bright. There was also the German influence which worked well with the other themes of the restaurant. Our waiter was great. We ordered large pretzel with sweet mustard, spicy mustard and beer cheese. The pretzel was legit and all of the sauces were great. For entrees, I ordered French Onion soup with a side spatzel (sp?). My wife ordered the Reuben on a panini instead of rye with German potato salad. My son ordered blackened buffalo wings and fries. The onion soup was tasty- I like more broth than onion but that's me. The spatzel was good in a sneaky way. When I first had a bite, I was underwhelmed with the initial taste. But just as the taste progressed, the spatezel conveyed a rich buttery flavor that prompted me to snack on them throughout the meal. My wife's Reuben was the winner of the dinner. The Reuben was amazing! The bread was delicious and the combination of corned beef, sauerkraut and sauce was so good. One of the best Reuben's we have had. Awesome! The potato salad was served cold (often it is served warm) but my wife was not a fan; that is not a hit on the dish however since it tasted like the German potato salad we have had in the past. My son's wings were tasty but not your typical buffalo flavor. It was a dry rub that was blackened which is different from the typical buffalo wing flavor. My son was not a fan but they were good once you knew they were different from the norm. Bavaria Pensacola makes their own blue cheese dressing. Tragically, they were out. I am positive the dressing is top notch. If you're still with me, you might be wondering a pizza- the menu was so varied that we chose something else. That doesn't mean that the pizza was any less delicious than the items we ordered. We will return again to try the pizza. We finished the dinner with chocolate cake and apple strudel. Both were great. The strudel was doughy and not flaky but tasty nonetheless. The cake was rich and completely worth the splurge. Overall, we had a great time.
