Actually ALONE is more like performance act then a hunted house. The reality is the marketing was scarier then the performance. My opinion is the organizers could use the whole building to create a much scarier atmosphere with more "surprises". The dark space was used very poorly. Me and my friend were really scared only a few times. It was not worth the $75 (VIP ticket). read more

Wow. So this was a great experience... I was really on the fence because I wasn't sure I could deal with the going through alone element. However I had done Blackout (in a group) and have only heard amazing things about this so I decided to just jump in and just do it. So glad I did!! I always anticipate things to be way worse than they actually are! In the beginning I was really nervous, hands shaking and all. Then as the journey continued I really got into the flow and became totally comfortable with each event. It was not as scary as I imagined, but there were some scary parts. It was definitely more creepy and eerie, yet also whimsical, surreal and almost magical. The whole thing is very artistic and strange and I just loved it! It's so hard to describe, it's something you really do have to experience. Almost a 'Alice in Wonderland'/'Through the Looking Glass' kind of adventure - with a horror twist! I can't imagine someone coming out of this and not overall enjoying. All the cast was fantastic and I really felt like I had a connection with each character I interacted with. You have to be willing to completely relinquish and just let yourself go. All the control is in their hands and if you let them, they'll take you on one unique journey! It all began with a cryptic Facebook post which led me on a journey that included phone calls, deciphering clues and visiting random places. I had to find a statue in a Los Angeles park and learn the layout of Grand Central Market, then finally order a drink from a bartender named Antonio at a small dive bar. All of this was just laying the groundwork for the real event scheduled to happen a week later. As instructed, I found the parked car in the secret location under the 1st street bridge. After being invited, I reluctantly got in. It was filthy. It started out as an uncomfortable interrogation and I wasn't sure whether I should remove my hand from the door handle. "Who Are you?" "Why are you here?" "Is anybody with you?" I was overwhelmed with confusion. I was told people were watching us. I was shooed away, but not before I was given a packet with material that would lead me to the next part of the journey. Throughout the course of the day, I would learn about the Enola Foundation and its effort to draw people into the ranks of its mysterious cult. I traversed the L.A. area, searching for more information. I went to places in my own city I had never been before. I did things I would never normally do. I interacted with people with the objective of getting the most out of the experience. I spent the day with a heightened sense of awareness. I can honestly say, this was probably one of the best experiences of my life. It has been about 2 years since this experience, and I have been to every Alone event since. Sorry to day, they are not all hits, but I will tell you that they are usually unlike anything you have ever done before. You have to allow yourself to be open and ready to embrace anything that comes your way. I did get a pretty bad and I believe accidental cut on the head and shoulder from a nasty bump during the experience. Ouch. Rite of the Anthropocene Review I need to qualify my 1 star a bit. First, the creators of Alone stated that the Rite would begin at 6:30p, we were still outside the venue at 6:40p, slowly trickling in. The venue ran out of food (which was in the form of chips) and was horribly understaffed for the amount of people that were packed in this place. People were sitting on the floors because chairs/stools were completely taken. Mind you, this is a 2.5-3 hour show (or for people like me that walked out early, 2 hour). While we stayed in the lounge you would be tapped by a staff person to go through 1 of 3 tracks. One was about a 5 minute maze in the dark that was horribly underwhelming. I believe you were suppose to be blindfolded but they completely missed my eyes so I just kept them shut for added effect. Unfortunately I slammed my foot right into something wooden while I was be pushed to run. In theory you get a ribbon tied around your wrist to mark that you've done this track but they completely forgot to ribbon my wrist. The other was to go upstairs and have your forehead painted. Then you go back down stairs. The last was to get your face painted like you made out with a clown. I didn't even do this track because I walked out of this before I even had the opportunity. Things were so poorly organized that people started to line up to have stuff done to them. This was absolutely ridiculous. While you were waiting for Alone magic to happen, you got to watch either a woman mumble spoken word, listen to another woman chant, watch interpretative dancers, guys playing guitar (with BOWS?!), or some dude play the shamisen. All the while this was happening there was god awful, insanity-inducing bass just playing over and over and over. It was so loud I had tinnitus for hours. MAKING THINGS LOUD DOESN'T EQUATE TO AWESOMENESS, IT JUST MAKES PEOPLE MAD AND SHOUTY. By two hours into this I was PISSED. I paid $71 (fees included) to be crammed with a bunch of people who were equally frustrated. I have never walked out early from an immersive theater piece but this show warranted my early departure. There was more to do outside (the homeless guy actor, which was used several years ago) but I told the actor NO and kept walking. This show had no purpose, I felt NOTHING except feeling ripped off. This show was horribly overpriced and oversold. The saddest thing is watching die hard fans in the crowd also walking out early from the show because they simply had enough. Based on my experience last night I will not be returning to Alone. This makes me feel sad because Alone was the very first immersive theater piece I've ever done last year but there is a point where you have to just say enough. I sent Alone this email and I'll post it here for anyone who is considering going to any of their next events. I highly recommend you take time to read it. Hello, It deeply pains me to write this email as I have always had a very strong admiration towards Alone. It was the first piece of immersive theater that I've gone through and since then, it has changed my understanding of haunts in general. I went through Index of Absorption in October of 2015 and felt as if I was in a surreal dream-like state. The price of admission was completely worth it as it truly made me escape reality. Having said that, I unfortunately can't say the same for the Rite of the Anthropocene. I had many major problems with the event last night and I will list them all with absolute sincerity as I somewhat feel as if this was done solely for the money instead of for the love of immersive theater. 1. You guys told me to be there at 6 so I arrived at 5:45. I was one of the first people in line and we were allowed inside the building 30 minutes after the stated time. In addition to this, I'm sorry to say but it is absolutely "RIDICULOUS" that inside it's random selection for who goes first. People who were in the back of the line went before me and that completely angered me. You have to develop a system in which you give priority to those who were called first. Maybe have a system in which you give each person a number according to their order in line and call the number out. 2. During my 2 hours at the event last night, I only experienced a seven minute mediocre walk through. This makes absolutely no sense considering the fact that the productions usually last around 45 minutes. Charging someone 60 dollars to experience seven minutes of getting painted on is absolutely absurd and shouldn't be allowed. 3. This is related to the first point: the event was completely unorganized. Instead of warning people about the claustrophobic element inside the event, you guys should maybe state that they will get piled by 150 other people while listening to some dreadful sounding music played by an inexperienced performer. 4. Never in my life did I think I was ever going to say this, but I decided to leave. This brings me to my fourth and final point: it seems to me, as a customer, that you guys decided to hold guests inside the club area and make them wait so they could buy drinks and spend a lot of money. After leaving the event, I noticed that this little "rite" was simply an attempt at draining people of their money by holding them up for so long, that they ended up spending even more on drinks than the price of admission. It was completely clear that you guys had a contract with the bar/club. Lastly, I'm asking for a refund as what happened last night was completely unacceptable. Due to the motivation behind creating this one night event, I'm hereby ending my relationship with Alone. I really enjoyed the show last year and it will perhaps always be one of my favorites, yet it deeply saddens me to say that this show has lost its energy and what made it so fantastic: doing it out of the passion for immersive theater instead of the money generated by it. Warning, I will tell you room for room what I experienced. Do not read pass the first paragraph if you do not want it to be spoiled. But do know I would tell you do not waste your money in attending this event. NOT WORTH THE MONEY, NOT EVEN AT HALF PRICE. I did not enjoy this event in the lease bit. I was only freaked out maybe once, I'll give them once, the rest of the time was spent crawling around on a dirty floor getting groped and yelled at by angry sweat smelling guys. Oh and they put a smelly wet bed sheet on you. Bad things that happened: The second guy you come across grabbed my head from behind and yanked me back, causing me to have whiplash in my neck for the next 2 weeks. But we can't touch them or say anything so I went with it. He then grabbed my face by the cheeks and pulled me out of a room.... And you guessed it, yep he left bruises on my face. I tried to pull his latex gloved hand off my face but he just kept yanking me. Next was this guy in an all black tight body suite with what looked like a painted face with maybe mouse years or something he kept walking around me turning on and off his flash light then he put on some face paint on me and some previously warn earphones on me.... I'm sorry guy but you smelled really bad, like stink sweat new your cab driver.... With then what happens next, a sack gets put roughly placed on my head and again my head is yanked back causing more neck pain. I get thrown in an elevator, and get fondled in the dark.... Awesome. Then I get told to get on the floor.... The dirty dirty smelly floor. Get on your knees, get on your hands, lay down face down. On the dirty dirty floor. Now crawl over here, don't look at me.... Don't look at me.... Now I'm going to put my face on yours and breath on you..... not really scary yet..... Now crawl thought this tunnel.... Now stay in this cage, now get in this wooden box and have a Strobe light flash slowly.... A couple of more rooms go by that arnt any more interesting. The room with the broken records... dance with this crazy in circles, then sit in this chair with this weirdo well she just stands behind you.... 5 minutes later go into the next room.... Next room has these white robed creepy things.... Now put on this white robe everyone else before you had one their heads....hopefully they washed their hair today.... Next room gets on your knees.... Me- "Ummm there's a spider... it's a real spider....." Nothing? Ok I'm killing this spider..... Person in front of you just is staring at you.... great shes coming at me... terrific she places a wet mildew smelling bed sheet over your head.... That everyone else has also had on their head. After that you get put in a room to wait, at least there is a TV in there you can see the same thing that just happened to you happen to the next person.... Hope I didn't give them my Lice. Sorry friend. I will say I was surprised by the next room when you are told to lay down. But then its ended by what else an old man crawling on top of you making you feel molested again, cause how else should they end the night? Lets just say, guys yelling at you touching you and yanking on your head not very scary, Annoying yes, but not very scary. If I wanted to be molested and fondled by a bunch of angry, dirty smelly guys I would take the Metro Bus. Do not waste your money. Oh and when you read that they will give you a flash light for your journey... that's a lie... they give you flash lights to walk to here to there, but mostly not, and you trip over elevated door frames. Let me start by informing you that I also went to Blackout, Delusion, and Trapped this year. Alone: An Existential Haunting was my favorite experience hands down. Normally, I would have given this event a 5/5 star rating, but I had major issues with finding the venue prior to my reservation on Saturday 10/25. To be quite frank, these logistical issues almost ruined my entire night. It is a testament to how good the event was that I did not give it 1 star. Let me elaborate (skip down if you want to read the actual review)... When I purchased tickets for Alone, I was informed that I would receive an email with the address to the event. Low and behold, I was sent an email the prior Monday with the following text: S E E K N O W: 3902 Sunset Blvd A S K : About the Enola foundation C O N T I N U E : Toward enlightenment We will see you at you rite. Breathe. I figured, "Cool, this must be the address for the event!" "Right?!" Boy, was I wrong. After driving for over two hours in a rat's nest called LA traffic to get to this location and not finding the venue, I checked my inbox again to find yet another email from Alone.... Embedded in the middle of a wall of text consisting of reminders and guidelines was an entirely different address, 321 E. Olympic Blvd! The worst part? It was halfway across town in the middle of downtown! Upon (finally) arriving at the venue, I informed the staff that I had been driving in circles because of this. The lady was unapologetic and informed me that it was VERY clear in the email where I needed to go. I reminded her that it was far from clear. She then said she would inform management because it had happened to other people before me. Yeah, no shit it had happened to other people...! Organizers: Whoever thought it was a good idea to send two different addresses (one via a cryptic email) is an idiot. To compound matters, the venue did not have a bathroom at the entrance. There was only a bathroom available in the after-party lounge upon completion. At first, this was frustrating because I had to pee like a race horse after driving in circles for 2.5 hours. But, after going through the entire event (I held it in!), I realized why they don't let you access the lounge beforehand - So, I'll let it pass. But, organizers, please rent a port-o-potty for your alleyway entrance next year! One note: They let my friend into the lounge to wait for me even though she didn't have a ticket. That was pretty cool... Anyways, onto the actual review. The event itself was amazing! So amazing, in fact, I'd probably change my review from a 4/5 to a 5/5 if someone from the venue would just give me a sincere apology for the address fiasco described above! Although it was advertised to be only 30 minutes, I felt like it was closer to 45 minutes to an hour. The many rooms were well designed and each and every one of them was unique and surreal. The experience felt more like a fever dream than a haunted house, which is a major compliment. At times, I felt transported to another plane of existence and even forgot I had to pee. Kudos to the organizers for keeping an ominous, albeit hypnagogic mood throughout. I lost track, but there must have been at least 10-15 "rooms," which is quite substantial when compared to similar experiences in town. Slight spoilers ahead: There were a couple of great jump scares involving bagged-abductions, but for the most part, the event relied more on creepy ambiance than anything else. I especially liked the creative passageways that required you to crawl, climb, and side-step in complete darkness. There were moments where I thought the experience was over, but I was still in the middle of it. The actors were all phenomenal and perfectly eerie. I especially enjoyed the rooms involving a creepy yoga master, twin girls straight out of The Grudge, a rambunctious dancer in a chamber full of loose feathers, a diner date with the girl from The Ring, an encounter with a homeless guy, a Q&A with an inquisitive researcher, and a VERY scary moment involving having to run full-speed in complete darkness with a neck brace and a bag over my head. The theme (a questionable research institute) permeated throughout the experience, even in the fantastically decorated lounge with sexy music where I was offered a free beer while a pretty girl in a gown painted my masquerade mask (yes, there's a masquerade mask) before I finally peed in a bathroom showered in red light. Update: I changed my review from 4 to 5 stars. It's been a few years since I've been able to partake in an Alone simulation, but I have to say, it's had a fairly large impact on me. I did several of the shows, including a scavenger hunt in downtown LA that was just bonkers. I can't wait to participate in another experience. Hoping these guys come back to LA soon. read more

I heard great things about 2014's show, so my friend convinced us to try out 2015's first leg "Diffusion". I was expecting an immersive interactive experience. Instead, after witnessing a truly awful play, we were shuffled around a tiny theater from dressing room to dressing room (not even staged -- there were boxes in these rooms that were clearly labeled as storage for the actual theater) while strobe lights were blasted in our faces and loud discordant music played. All the acting I witnessed was subpar at best and the only time I felt engaged at all was when I was covered in a sheet and laid down in a room where I only saw colors and heard some industrial drones. There was no discernable story, no seeming purpose behind anything, no emotional engagement, and nothing that made me want to consider going back. My friend who took us apologized saying "it was 10 times better last year." I love good immersive theater, but this was an amateurish painful mess. read more

ALONE is an interesting beast. It's a constant, changing, living, breathing organism. I've been to plenty of ALONE shows, and each one is incredibly different, while still retaining elements of things they did in the past. People on here are complaining about the nature of the latest show, RITEOFTHEANTHROPOCENE, and while I can understand some of their frustrations, I refer back to my opening statement: ALONE is constantly changing. Every show they do, they branch out and try new things. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. But each one is an experience unto itself. While they started as a "move you around in the dark," they have evolved beyond that. Sure, they still do elements of that in their shows, but it has become so much more. Performance art, scavenger hunts, reflections of your own self, ALONE makes you think. It gives you a range of emotions. It doesn't tell you WHAT to feel. It makes you discover that for yourself. It doesn't tell you where to go, as you are encouraged to explore. It doesn't make its intentions entirely clear, and again, that is all part of the experience. I've done more shows than I can count at this point, and have loved every single one. However, I will speak in particular about this past show, RITEOFTHEANTHROPOCENE, as that seems to be what folks on here are talking about. I attended the second showing, the 10:30 one. For what it was, I absolutely enjoyed it. My friends and I paid $50 for a 3 hour experience. Were we in the dark for the entire 3 hours? No, of course not. Instead, we were treated to performances of many different natures; musical acts, performance art, and the rite itself. All the while, people were being taken out and pulled into the warehouse to do one of their three paths, the typical ALONE experience. Throughout the evening, everyone was marked to show which paths they had done, and got to experience all three. In between these paths, and the acts, my friends and I had a great time hanging out and chatting in the bar area. We didn't buy any drinks, and had free water instead, so the comment from another review about "forcing people to spend money" was pretty unwarranted. There were a few in our group who had done ALONE before and a few who hadnt. We all walked away enjoying it. We spoke to many others, in both camps, who liked it as well. Judging one ALONE event against another is fruitless, since they are never the same. They are ebbing and flowing, always changing it up and trying new things. I enjoy that aspect of it. Overall, ALONE is still my favorite immersive experience in Los Angeles, and I look forward to what they come up with next. read more

First of all, to the person who rated this 1 star because he couldn't find the place: C'mon! You can't rate an event when you didn't even attend it. And for the record, this place was EASILY located. Not sure how you could have missed it. Anyway, this experience was awesome! It was way better than Blackout this year (and I love Blackout). Alone was scarier and creepier and felt like it lasted longer than Blackout. I won't give too much away, but these people really know how to put on a good show. The actors were all great and stayed in character the whole time (even when they had to help you along in some places). If the actors were able to watch me in the dark in all those rooms, I'm sure they all had some great laughs at my reactions. I was terrified but loving it all at the same time! I can't wait to see next year's Alone. I just hope that they keep it at the same level and that they don't hike up the prices too much! SIDE NOTE: The venue was perfect. Incredible! Go. You won't regret it (well, maybe you will...). I don't want to give anything away, so I won't go in to any particulars. The loose "theme" really brings it together in my opinion (something that Blackout lacks). They use the space they have really well too, and play on your psyche in some really creative ways. All of the actors were very good, and the entire team deserves the highest praise. If you're trying to decide between this and Blackout this year, absolutely choose this. If you're trying to decide between this and Delusion, do both. If you've never done an "extreme" haunted house and standard mazes are starting to not do it for you anymore, you really should try Alone. It gives a whole new perspective on what a haunt experience can be. read more

Without trying to ruin anything, I had a GREAT time here. Well worth the money, well worth the drive, just well worth it! The only thing you know is that you have to go in alone, and the actors can touch you. Everything else is a virtual mystery, even the address until the day of the event (which they e-mail you). I can't really write a review about this place without giving anything away, but it was SO unnerving, especially in the beginning, and engrossed me throughout. The workers (before you go through with this event) were SO nice and welcoming, and I could tell that they really cared about what we thought. Come with an open mind!! Great job guys! Alone: RITEOFTHEANTHROPOCENE was my eighth (I think?) encounter with Alone, and it was definitely one of my favorites - I attended the 11pm show, and while the wait to get in was a little lengthy, I'm not sure when we actually got in as I did not bring my phone per Alone's specific instructions. Either way, it was a great time to chat with friends old and new made through Alone and other immersive pieces. Once inside, there were two "sections" to the rite - one group experience within the bar/concert venue that was the main attraction, and a then multiple shorter (7-10 min) experiences showcasing different themes common in Alone's more traditional walkthroughs. The performances within the larger group-oriented venue were amazing; they was a celebration of Alone's more theatrical experiences as well as the music that accompanies their shows. The dancers were extremely talented, and there were some great personal interactions with the audience, which went from generally subdued and playful to intense and chaotic over the course of the night. Zuzu, the singer that appeared about halfway through the show, was also amazing. The ambient music throughout was great as well - a beautiful live recreation of Alone's droning sound design. The three "individual" sections were wonderful as well, and very intimate and immersive despite the large number of attendees. I never once felt rushed through a scene, and the seemingly unique, personal touches throughout were icing on the cake. Everything flowed very naturally, and I only approached one hiccup in which I think I accidentally entered someone else's scene, but it was played off masterfully to where I'm not sure it wasn't intentional. The actors inside were top notch as usual, they were gentle when needed and forceful when appropriate. Set design was wonderful as well - the use of space and scale and scene to scene transitions, and the level of detail within their environments, is perfect as usual. Alone has again subverted expectations - and RITEOFTHEANTHROPOCENE was a great example of going left when everyone else turns right, and it was definitely a risky undertaking, but they pulled it off. To me, hanging out in a club full of haunt and immersive theater enthusiasts and newbies at the weirdest new age-y halloween party of the year was perfect way to cap off the haunt season. read more

Such a disorganized, poorly made and quite frankly boring event - ALL HYPE. I've been waiting to do Alone for years... this was something on my bucket list and could not stop talking about it for just as long. My girlfriend and I went to THE RITE OF ANTHROPOCENE 6:30pm show, needless to say there was ZERO organization. There was a room of about 100 of us standing around looking at each other for an hour, with an elderly woman dressed in a lame, unconvincing red/black cloak who recited lame text from a book and music that seemed extremely poorly rehearsed (side note: I love experimental electronic music, but this was just bad). People start getting pulled from the crowd by actors dressed in black, they literally put Party City make up on your forehead then made you stand and wait for about another 45 min. Here's the kicker, when you finally embark on your poorly executed adventure, THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE LASTED ABOUT 7 minutes!!! Again that is like 2 hours of standing around and 7 minutes of actually experiencing it. I think they felt bad, since they started letting people go through it twice! (Imagine the people who didn't even get to go yet and there is already people going twice again). Also, the second time around, the actors seemed to know this was a f***-up and started to be funny and almost joke around. The actual experience, actors and set design was just plain BAD. I could have made a better experience through my house into my backyard. Talking to others after the experience, they said they've been to other Alone experiences, and this was by far the worst. I'm extremely letdown by this event... This was the one thing we had planned for Halloween and it was so bad. I have no idea how people rated this 5 - stars, you all must not get out much and/or are easily entertained. read more

Just finished this experienced. I have to say this was well worth the price. I have done blackout and trapped. This by far is the longest and most intense experienced they really push the boundaries. If your are looking for a intense haunt this is it. You crawl in tight spaces and they really test how much you can handle. I will return next year. The scenes do put you In your own horror movie. The building itself has this creepy feel. They do play off this in the haunt. I don't want to give to much away. Experience alone. Great way to end Halloween. read more

Last year's was fantastic--exuberantly designed, imaginative costumes, many actors, the spectrum of emotions inspired. This year's is about 33% of last year's--bare rooms, few actors in costume, much fewer rooms, simplistic sound design, and gimmicky acts that inspired little emotional response from me. This time also featured a new skit: waiting for long periods of time in film projection rooms watching the same short films of abstract forms and Enola manifesto voiceovers DURING THE EXPERIENCE ITSELF. Minus this wait time, the experience was about 1/2 hour. Same price. Is this capitalism at work? Profits over quality? This time was actually boring. At least it was not cliché. It doesn't deliver all the goods but at least someone is actually trying to do something different. I'm willing to give it a little lip-service. read more

You never know what to expect from Alone and they did it again with THE RITE OF THE ANTHROPOCENE. Though some have complained it absolutely exceeded my expectations. Since the ticketing page stated "The Rite will take the form of performances designed to herald the oncoming epoch" it wasn't clear to me there would be any time spent Alone. I took the plunge because I'm always interested in what they come up with and I'm glad I did. I see a lot of ingenuity in their shows and this one was very ambitious: every person, while watching performances, was singled out three separate times to go through a different experience in a random order without repeating anything. The face paint (and sometimes ribbons tied to a wrist) marked you as having experienced one of the paths. The experiences crisscrossed through different areas in what I assume was a large warehouse next to the performance venue. It's obvious there was a lot of effort put into this one night only show. I applaud Alone for constantly trying something new. In doing so they will inevitably disappoint some with expectations of an older show they went to or heard about. If you haven't gone to one of their shows and want to try something completely unique give them a try. Keep an open mind and revel in the avant garde glory! read more

Supposed to make you "feel". Definitely a thought provoking experience. I am a hugger... so I dug the hugs! I did get hit in the face with a pillow that had a stone on it and wanted to knock this kid out. He thought it was hilarious... I got over it... and moved on. You should go to Alone alone.. I feel like I was forced to be out of my comfort zone because nobody was with me that I could latch on to. RITEOFTHEANTHROPOCENE- The rite was a 3 star. However, Alone is still 5 stars in my book! I was there from 6:30 pm until 10. It was a long time. I actually enjoyed the performances. I sat in the balcony and watched people get plucked away for their experiences. Then I went downstairs and sat on the floor and gazed at the glowing lights as the music played around me. There were free chips and water at the bar. The music was actually quite soothing. It's the same music they play at all alone shows and that have played through our headphones on scavenger hunts etc. So it was neat to watch. I was a little antsy towards the end because I had to get back so my husband could go to the 10:30 show. People were hovering around the doorway. Not many people sat watching the show any longer. So I sat in different seats to watch from different angles. I was trying to be patient and was hoping to get tapped but decided to join the others at the doorway at 9. The actual maze portion was fun. I was a'maze'd by how much space they used around the venue. It is very much in line with the Alone experience. The logistics were a little rough with so many people. Perhaps if there were 50 people per hour that would have worked out better. I do understand why others did not enjoy it. But it was billed as a ceremony so the three maze portions were bonus. I tried my best to take it all in and I love Alone's creativity and willingness to try different things. I also recently went to Midsummer's scream and ScareLA's Alone offerings and those were awesome! I especially liked ScareLA. I find Alone super artistic and their sense of humor is something I appreciate. read more

This was the first time I've ever experienced a haunt like this. I became intrigued by the idea of immersive theater after watching a documentary on the Blackout Experience, and after some research, I felt like Alone would be a good introduction to the milieu. Besides, a couple of friends had done previous Alone experiences and raved about them, so we signed up for Rite of the Anthropocene. What followed our arrival was disappointing, to say the least. After waiting on line with roughly a hundred fifty other guests for about three quarters of an hour, we were admitted to a bar and treated to an hour and a half of mediocre performance art including electronic and live acoustic musical performances, dancing, chanting, and spoken word. I thought this was called Alone? It should have been titled, "Large Group." The theme and performance art could have been interesting in a ritualistic sense except that the immersive "experience" that followed lacked any creative connective tissue and was so half-hearted that I have to wonder if the creators knew they were dialing it in or if they genuinely thought this through and considered what they were offering truly worth the price of admission (let alone the hype). Eventually I was tapped to have the "experience," which ended up being nothing more really than a dark maze. After a roughly seven minute walk/crawl through one part of the maze, I emerged back in the bar we'd started in. My friends and I all wondered if, "that was it?" And then we learned we could go and do a second and even third experience upon request - but the planning was so lame that on my second go I essentially went through the same experience I'd gone through on my first go. I had to tell the staff that I'd repeated the same experience twice, and then they put me through a third time for an experience that was again lacking any creative through-line or connective thematic tissue, but hey at least it was different than my first two run-throughs save for that it was totally uninteresting and uninspired. I didn't bother with the third option (on a fourth go) as by then I'd been there four hours and my party felt we had endured enough disappointment for one evening. Really just awfully disappointing given the stellar reviews Alone has enjoyed in the past. This was the third year running my friends had gone to Alone and they said, after tonight, it would be their last given there are other options offering better experiences. Outside, as other attendees were leaving and discussing their feelings, it became clear my friends aren't in the minority. I won't be returning, either, and wonder if I shouldn't be contacting the creators to ask for a refund. What a shitshow. read more

Went on 10/30/16 and was extremely disappointed. Others have elaborated on the details of exactly how and why this experience sucked so hard so I won't go into detail, I'll just say all the bad reviews are spot on. Tons of waiting, bad performance "art," and totally underwhelming alone time. It was horribly disorganized, not the least bit scary or even stimulating, and it took me an hour to get all of the lipstick off of my face that one of the performers plastered on. I was so excited to try out Alone and now I'm just sorry I didn't leave early. I'd like my four hours back but i'd settle for my 71 dollars. read more

This is by far the best haunted house I have ever experienced. I go to a lot of them and am very hard to scare. This isn't the typical scare from a "boo!", it's a deeper, real scare that lingers when you leave. Well done for being so new, and I hope to see it get better each year. read more

THE RITE OF THE ANTHROPOCENE ^^ this was my first time going to Alone and I had heart such great things, so I was very excited to give it a try and maybe the other years have been better, but this year was a DISASTER!!! Complete and utter disaster. - It was supposed to start at 6:30, but we didn't get let in until 6:45. - Then everyone sits in the bar and waits to be taken out of the room to go through one of the three experience. There were probably 400 people in the room and no way for them to keep track of everyone. They attempted to mark people with face paint or ribbons, but this failed miserably. - One person in our group waited 1.5 hours before going through any of the experiences. - I was there for 2 hours and went through the same experience TWICE! Right after telling the woman what I had already done, she literally sent me to do the same thing. - Two other people in our group were given the same ribbon marker for doing two different experiences. - People were getting hurt and were being led into tables while blindfolded because they were starting to try to rush people through given the obvious annoyance of the crowd. - The one experience I did do was underwhelming and last for maybe 10-15mins, so you're hanging around in a bar getting bored and spending more money on drinks for a grand total of 30-45mins of experience (assuming you get taken to do each of the experiences). SO DUMB and clearly a way to pad their bottom line with alcohol purchases. - We flat out left. We were beyond caring to even try to experience each of the events. All of that being said, I can see what they were trying to achieve, even though it was completely missed. They did a good job of creating a creepy unsettling atmosphere within the experience, all though I'm not sure if the unsettling mood in the bar was due to the music or everyone's annoyance. I would give it a try again next year since I've heard such good things in the past and this was obviously a very off year. read more

I would give this zero stars. SO disappointed. I will never go again. The "acting" was terrible. I was really looking forward to something fun even a little scary but it didnt come close and there was little to do with color. The space was all wrong. I wanted there to be some faith in acting in the city, but again a terrible show, terrible actors, waste of money and my time.They just drew on our arms and put Strobe lights in our faces poorly done. I don't want to say too much, but I was really impressed by the level of polish and creativity at Alone, as well as the opening night ceremony - perfectly complemented the experience. Big congratulations to the whole team. As someone who has been to Delusion 3 out of their 4 years and has wandered many a haunted house, this experience brought me to an emotional place that few interactive theatre experiences have. I'm updating my review based on several things. 1. I've attended 6 or 7 ALONE events in the past few years, and they have always been awesome. Obviously that's why I keep going. This past event, Rite of the Anthropocene was absolutely a huge letdown, but that does not take away from their work in the past. 2. As mentioned, I emailed ALONE with my disappointment for their last event, and they responded with a very heartfelt apology explaining that they really wanted to do something great this year and it came down to too big of a project with too little prep time, and they admit the problems. This shows me they are decent people who really have a lot of passion for their shows, and I truly believe that their next event is going to be back on par with what I've come to expect from them. Even the greatest can stumble from time to time, and I think that's what happened here. I'll be back with an updated review after their next event, whenever that is. For those of you who did ALONE for the very first time this October, I highly suggest you wait and see how the reviews are for the next event before giving up on them completely. Don't want to even give a one star.. terrible organizational skills by management and completely underwhelming!

This was my first "Alone" experience. Went Sunday night, had about a 30 minute wait before being led in. I have to agree with a few other reviewers on here - exciting moments, but nothing overwhelmingly freakish. The Basement escape room and The Purge horror maze (the one downtown a few years ago, not the really bad Uni HHN one) were more intense and "scary". And yes, some of the guys get so close after throwing you up against the wall you wonder if it's going to end up a rough makeout session...and as exciting as it sounded, that's not necessarily the experience you're looking for if you come here specifically for mindful disorientation. It was more experimental theater, towards the end felt very cinematic, and the last few "sections" were very beautiful and eerie all at the same time. If the entire maze had been like the last few scenes, I might have a different opinion. I always enjoy playing into the action with maze characters, and never felt myself getting into it here. Prepare to get handled, A LOT, crawl, climb, and spin, but I was honestly expecting it to be rougher. There were moments that throw off your vertical / horizontal plane (I won't say which), and I was loving that. So many times I thought "I would've been really disturbed if ____ had happened, but didn't...". The friend I went with felt the same way. Missed opportunities to really mess with your sense of reality. Perhaps the way it was sold gave me expectations of sensory deprivation, being consumed by another dimension, and setting my sense of reality on edge. I walked away feeling just like my same old self afterwards. Perhaps I was hoping for too much of a "Clockwork Orange" or "Shining" kind of experience. Also, make sure you read the guidelines you receive when you buy your ticket before you attend. On a scale of 1-10 how intense I like my scares, I'd say I'm an 8 or 9 (no McKamey Manor for me..). If you're around a 5, and are new to haunted houses or don't frequent horror / suspense mazes, movies, etc. much, then I'd say you'd be genuinely unnerved. Don't go expecting it to be a haunted house, but don't go expecting it to be just a waltz through pretty lights either. I'd give this a solid B, especially for this troupe trying something different when so many haunted houses these days have become formulaic. read more

After experiencing other immersive-type haunts this past year, this ALONE experience was lacking. Ridiculously long wait outside and once we got inside, more waiting. It seemed like they over-booked and felt very disorganized with the long wait and the haphazard choosing process which took forever. The maze was 'okay' and really short and not worth the long wait and money. My friend and I ended up only doing one maze each and left early (it seemed like they just wanted us to buy more drinks which we did b/c we were bored to tears). read more

For the first year of this event, it was pretty good. I've done just about every other halloween event around LA including Blackout and Delusion, and this is a very similar experience to Blackout, just not quite as intense. The actors did a great job and I'm not gonna give anything away. That said, there were certain areas I felt there were opportunities that weren't taken advantage of, but overall it was good. I look forward to seeing them add to it and polish it up a bit for next year and I'll be back for sure! read more

This is my review of my experience during Alone's Index of Diffusion. I found this experience to be much more simplistic and smaller scale than the one they had to offer last year, however, this is only part one and not the final October haunt. I saw it more as a warm up, but was still extremely pleased. Without giving any major spoilers away, I loved how Diffusion used both sections of isolation and group focused rooms to create mixed emotions and confusion. I found myself really having to let go and give into what was happening at times, but when I did, I had a blast. I really felt like I had become part of the experience and was not just being guided around it once I was able to let go. Also, I noticed it seemed very long. They said the expected runtime was 30 minutes, but my group (the 8:30 group) went in at 8:30 and I came out at almost 9:45! My friend who also went through the event had a completely different experience from mine, but still traveled the same basic path. Sections felt much more random and disorganized than Alone's past event. (It sounded like I had a better experience than she did) Overall I had a great time with this first index and can't wait for the next. I can see this event not being an enjoyable time for some as it requires a lot of group participation and is small as well as not incredibly elaborate. But as I said before, I thought this was a great intro for the season to come and it left me wanting so much more. I felt my 20$ was well spent. read more

I bought tickets for about 12 haunted houses this year, and this was the one I was looking forward the most, especially since blackout LA wasn't happening this year. I certainly enjoyed myself, but I also left underwhelmed by the experience. Lots of hugs, dark rooms, blacklights and spinning. It was like being a candy raver again. But for a touch you haunted house I felt a like they could have roughed me up a little more. I am also thrown off by the actors getting extremely close to your face. I like them popping my personal space bubble, but half the guys that did it were pretty hot, so I felt more inclined to make out with them than feeling like my sense of space was violated. It was still unique and different than any other HH I'd been to this season. I'll do it again next year, just feel free to push it further alone! read more
