I had such a special time here. It is super cozy and cute. The food was incredible. I think this would be a great place for a first date. I'd sit at the bar and get raclette. Or come here with my sweetie and get fondue together. I went for brunch and it was the best orange juice I've ever had. Just try it. We shared the Kaiserschmarrn (torn pancake) which was perfect to share because it is small bits of delicious pancake. I had the The Aescher Rosti (shredded potatoes with raclette, laundrauschinken, and egg). The laundrauschinken was a unique, thick, tender bacon that I would go back for. Heads up! Came in on valentines at 8 pm, we knew it was going to be slow. Right when we sat down we were told that the kitchen was moving slower as expected on valentines. I am gluten free and I really wish they had items labeled on the menu. We started with the fondue and split the fondue for 2 with four people. As we were told, food took a while. Fondue was amazing! We ordered a few cocktails as well and really enjoyed those. The entrees and dessert are where the meal fell flat. We ordered the special, a beef tartlet of some sort and that item came out significantly later than the other entrees. Our entrees were okay, I would say the fish I had was underseasoned. The fish came with the potatoes and the potatoes were raw. The schnitzel had a large bone, so pretty deceiving how much you are actually getting. The interior was small but had cozy decor and a patio. Our waiter was nice, but the hostess was pretty frazzled and running around all night. Cute decor, though it had a strong floral perfume smell that was offputing for a restaurant. Our waitress lacked personality and we felt a bit rushed. We got an assortment of things - noodles, schnitzel, burger & fries. Both the noodle dish and the burger were small for the price. Schnitzel was ok but nothing to write home about. Came in here during dining month. Kind of a small place, but cute and the service was friendly. our biggest issue was with the salad and that was because they left the leaves huge. it makes it difficult to eat and to be honest, you feel like a messy fool trying to eat an entire large leafy green. The food was pretty tasty. We decided to share so we would try both dishes but the fish dish was hands down way better. First time at Alpenrausch and enjoyed the ambience and service. The salats were my favorite - and that says a lot for someone who doesn't normally enjoy salads. They were seasoned well and a refreshing accompaniment to our meaty mains. I will warn you that the dishes are on the blander side but I prefer that over an overly salted dish! The schnitzel was good and I enjoyed the side potato salad the most. It had a very smoky taste to it which I never experienced in a potato salad before! We also got the steak and the pasta. This is a review I've struggled with for months. It's this tug-of-war of 1-star or 5-star. It's so divided. Unable to decide where to land, I'm going with 3-stars. I love to be the guy to Kool-Aide man through the wall and blow out the credibility of poor reviews but the more I read, the more I agree. And if better executed, this could be one of the greatest gems in all of Portland. We had an early reservation on a Friday. We were promptly greeted and sat in the corner. The entire restaurant felt, a bit stuffy? Overwhelming? Disorganized? Over-packed? I'm a short dude and felt crunched up in the corner at our table. Nothing screamed "welcome! stay for a while!" Our waitress was professionally polite. Nothing less. Nothing more. There to do the job and go home. I love to ask what a waite person's favorite item on the menu is but being met with "it depends on what you like" as a response? Disappointing. Ordered a martini. It was fine. Nothing great to write home about. We split the Venison Tartare. It was fine. nothing great to write home about. The bread served with the Tartare was burned so hard that it wouldn't absorb any of the egg yolk (which is the joy of a Tartare). We asked for a couple more pieces and we were met with "that'll cost you more". Why not serve it with enough bread in the first place? With that response, we changed our dinner plans. We asked for a check and it was provided, no explanation of the service fees. I never pay attention to receipts but happned to catch that we'd already been charged for a gratuity we were not agreeable with. We left. Found a great restaurant down the street and dined there. After writing what I've written I realie my struggle is with the missed opportunity and failure of maximizing potential. This place could be so dang good... they just didn't execute on any part. A delicious spot for Swiss goodness, even if you're not getting the fondue ! It's a very cute restaurant for dinner with the girls, a date, or even for meeting an old friend from out of town - they also have 6 bar seats - with an extensive wine menu, and an outside covered area that's heated for the winter. I stopped by Alpenrausch on Halloween night! They offered a percent off fondue for anyone who came dressed in costume. The decor is wonderful - from their "hutte" with outdoor seating, to their eclectic interior with farm tools, cow art, antlers, vintage fondue pots, and more. Service was a tad slow, but plenty friendly. They auto-charge a 23% tip for wellness and service, which is plainly stated on the menu. You can request it be removed. Staff is up front that additional tip is not expected. We had beers - they were great styles to pair with the food. Their cocktails look great but at $15-18 it was too pricey for me this evening. Many non-alcoholic options for $4-8, which is appreciated. We got the fondue for 2-3 which is $39. They also have a large for 4-5 which is $72. It came with potatoes, bread, sausage, sliced meats, apple, peppers, and seasoning. They brought extra bread, complimentary, to finish up the cheese. It's a good appetizer but I wouldn't call it a main meal based on size. Overall a very fun "dining activity" and makes for a great date night or communal meal. I'd come back to try other items on their menu when planning a more upscale night out, or stop by during summer for beers and light bites on their large patio. read more

My friends and I very excitedly made a reservation here...and oof I wanted to like this place, but gosh the bad overwhelmed the good by a longshot. We had a 2 pm Friday reservation and were seated promptly; not too crowded but had a couple of other groups present. We put in a drink order and soon realized that service, though kind, was not going to swift or memorable in a good way. Cocktails did arrive in about ~15 min but our friend's tea was definitely forgotten altogether. We were able to order a bit after this and this is when the miscommunication seemed to start. Our server asked if wanted things coursed or altogether and we responded saying "oh just bring things out as they're ready"...however, I think our server may have misunderstood this? I say this because between the time we sat and the time we got ANY food on the table, an entire hour had passed. The first bites that did arrive were the yeasted rolls which were good, but not worth the 1 hr wait. Next came our large fondue which came with a variety of bread, meats, pickled veggies, potatoes. The cheese...was not it. The taste of alcohol overwhelmed it completely and you literally couldn't taste much else. The dippable items were fine though I will say the pickled veggies were quite good. The rosti came out next with raclette and it was my favorite bite by far but how can you fault me when it's crispy potatoes with cheese. We also had the shredded/ripped pancake dish which seemed a tad underdone in certain bites but was fine overall. We had also ordered a bavarian pretzel which never arrived, but also wasn't on our bill so I guess that's somewhat fair? It was clearly forgotten in the mix which was unfortunate. I wanted to like Alpenrauch more than I did. I don't think I'll be back. We were in the mood for fondue on a rainy February night and I wish we'd gone somewhere else. Let's start with the good: the food is good, the wines and mocktails are excellent, and they've really done up the "Alpen chalet" decor. It's also one of the quieter restaurants I've been to recently. But: service is erratic and extremely slow (we waited 40min for our first course, during which the servers were invisible). I get it, restaurant staffing is hard and folks cancel unexpectedly ... but: one of the only 7 occupied tables in the restaurant got all their dishes promptly, while all six other tables waited. So clearly they were capable of turning things around faster, they just chose not to. Coupled with the high prices (expect $65-$100 per person) and the mandatory 20% service charge (which is on the menu, but in very small type), and it really feels like Alpenrauch is charging for a level of service that it in incapable of delivering. read more

Had a tasty dinner here last night. I enjoyed the pretzel which was among the best I've ever had. A bit buttery but that authentic hard bread old school texture. If you're thinking about going once more before they close...don't bother. Their mandatory 23% included tip seemed to give the server the ability to give poor service knowing they would get tipped anyway. We asked to try a taste of the wine and she said I can explain it to you perfectly. We still wanted to try it first at $16 per glass. The glass was small and her pour was very stingy. Like wine tasting. The fondue for 2 was probably $10 of cheese with a bit of bread , 1 sausage, split, 1 small potato, a few sm slices of Mortadella and some pickled veges. We left hungry and the bill was $97! We felt ripped off but they are closing and it seems like Olympic Provisions is wringing as much cash out if the place as they can before they shutter it. Our server was obviously high, too many gummies perhaps, petulant, trying too hard to be sweet and not at all concerned about poor service because of the mandatory tipping policy. $32 wasted on 2 very stingy pours and $47 wasted on a stingy fondue. A group of us met here for a friend's birthday celebration (thank god they take reservations) and with the six of us, I'd say it was a bit of a tight squeeze. Didn't matter though; the place is cozy and warm, and dips generously into that ubiquitous Portland aesthetic of old-timey furniture and Knick-knacks set into a wood-heavy space, accented with dim lighting and random accessories. It works for this space (which bills itself as Swiss/German/Italian cuisine), as it gives off a rustic farmhouse/alpine lodge vibe. If you've been to Olympia Provisions you've seen this all before. I'll also come right out and say the service was excellent, with our thoughtful, cheery and attentive waitperson really seeming to give a damn about how our group was doing throughout the night without hovering. The drinks came out quick, the plating was right on and the accompanying info was helpful. As for the menu, it should be clear by now that this is a meat and cheese palace, which is not necessarily in my wheelhouse (I didn't pick the venue). There are other reviewers here that are far more knowledgeable and can speak to the quality of the venison or heft of the jagershnitzel; I had the pizzoccheri, which is buckwheat pasta swimming in cabbage and fontina cheese. It was okay, not great, with undercooked noodles and far too much cheese. Portions seemed to be on the small side too. As an aside, I will say every one of the menu items are priced on the high side, but then, this restaurant was named as one of Bon Appetit's top new places of 2024, so what do I know. Seems they're going for a fine dining deal here, just so ya know. Also surprising - for an alpine themed restaurant- was the super compact beer list, though the wine menu was pretty hearty. Lastly - and this one stings a bit - there is a 3% "health & wellness" charge as well as a 20% gratuity AUTOMATICALLY added to all checks (but can be removed on request). It's an ambush at the end of the evening to say the least, and in the interest of transparency, why not just add it to the menu price upfront? Needless to say, when the check came, there were a lot of raised eyebrows at our table. In short: very cozy and warm space, with a fun atmosphere and great service, but very pricy for what you get. We went for a Thursday night date night and had a fantastic time. This is a great place to go with a date or a group of friends because there's so many little things to notice and talk about. Nice touches like the eclectic artwork and decor and plating on the dishes. Service was quick and no fuss. They introduce each dish and are attentive, but there's no pressure or extra fluff. Very laid back for such high quality food and drink, which is a rare combo to find. We did the one of each of the set 3 course meals for Portland dining month. I started with very high expectations as Alpenrausch was listed as one of best new restaurants in the US by Bon Appetite for 2024. I started with Canederli, a spinach dumpling with salumi. I could sense chunks of salumi in the dumpling but they and the entire dumpling lacked any flavor. The broth helped but not much. The bratwurst was nice. I found the entire dish to be enjoyable. I like the capers with the fries, hard to eat with the fries but tasty. I was able to sample to potato salad. I felt the potato salad would have been a better offering over the fries. Nice atmosphere, not busy for a Sunday afternoon. While we were seated right away it was about 15 minutes before anyone paid attention to us. A table of six was next us, they were finished eating when we sat down but had to raise their hand after the same 15 minutes to get anyone to stop by. This was in the front of restuarant. Their service got better towards the middle of the meal but it took awhile. A lot of hype but in the end not worth it. read more

The unique and enticing menu is sure to draw you in on the quieter nights down on Division St. The eclectic alpine cabin decor and sheepskins will keep you there. Either way it's a recipe for a cozy night. The winter menu is currently displaying hearty, warming entrees and appetizers as well as a selection of cold weather cocktails. I was excited by the idea of the potato croquette and kept my eye on the rosti in case we were still hungry. The croquette's were so cute and shaped like pears but needed salt. The menu said they came with fois gras in some form, of which I found none, but it would have added needed salt and complexity. Without the accompanying mustard sauce they were quite bland. We also ordered the fondue and some glasses of different white wines to pair with the bubbly cheese. It arrived with fanfare and a thoughtful presentation featuring several of Olympia provisions' meats, some bread, potatoes, and pickles. It had good flavor and was classically made but the flour was evident. If you're hungry this is a great option to fill up two diners. The wine selection was well curated and had beautiful options that paired well. We finished the evening with the chocolate budindo which had crunchy candied hazelnuts and cream. I'm used to busing being more set and thick but it was a nice, creamy chocolate ending to a lovely meal. Service is fast and so friendly no matter who is helping you. The fondue itself was good, but we did not like the accompaniments at all, we ordered a soft pretzel to go with it and that was great but the meats were hard to dip and eat with it and just didn't work for us. We completely recognize this is not the Bavarian style fondue we are used to, so it may work for others but just wasn't something we enjoyed. I appreciate you can get OpenTable reservations as we heard it was very popular. I liked the pillows and small throws on the chairs and bench seats to make it more cozy in the winter. Looking over the menu since we hadn't been here was we had some questions. They don't like to substitute anything. The burger was good and thick with good flavor. You have to pay extra for the fries but they were good. I also enjoyed the beef cheeks. The one item that stood out was how cold the waitress was. The other staff were friendly but every time our waitress came by she didn't seem to care and again was cold in her interactions. The food sucks but the service is good. Four of us went to Alpenrausch, a Swiss restaraunt in Portland. As background, we've had Swiss food in Switzerland, the US, and Canada, and were looking forward to the experience. We ordered a pork schnitzel with a paprika sauce and a Miriam's salad (which is a pretty house salad recommended by the server) to start. Our friends ordered fondue. The beer I ordered on the server's recommendation was surprisingly poor (Bitburger). While it wasn't good (and I left it untouched), that's not the restaurant's fault. The white wine my wife ordered was equally mediocre and best described as "flabby." Again, not the restaurant's fault. The Miriam's salad was very pretty as promised: a pyramid of fresh lettuces neatly arranged rather artistically high on the plate. Unfortunately, it was slathered in what the server described as a brown mustard dressing, which had little flavor (and what you could taste did nothing to enhance the lettuce) and was rather thick and had congealed on all the lettuce leaves as a thick, slightly greasy coat. Okay, the salad was pretty but unpleasant to eat. We pushed it aside. Our entrees arrived. The schnitzel had a side of a cabbage and potato salad that was, again, flavorless and was lacking seasoning. (This is a place that doesn't have salt and pepper on the table, so any hope of doctoring it even slightly was gone.) The cabbage and potato salad got pushed aside like the Miriam's salad. For those who are not familiar with schnitzel, it is a wonderful dish typically made with chicken, pork, or veal, where a cut of meat is pounded until it's very thin, then breaded and fried. It's rather delicate and is a distinctive way of preparing meat. But you should know that a schnitzel is NOT a thin-cut bone-in pork chop that's not pounded but has merely been breaded and fried. Unfortunately, the cook is unaware of this distinction. The meat was overdone and, as with all large pork chops, there were fatty bits. The paprika sauce was an interesting idea that completely failed in execution as well, although I can say that this particular dish DID have flavor to it: the paprika sauce tasted slightly fishy for some reason. The fresh parsley topping was pleasant at least. Our friends' fondue was marginally acceptable, although it was not quite as good as a couple brands of frozen fondue I've had. What stood out was the items for dipping: no bread (odd), apple slices (lovely), bite-sized chunks of boiled unsalted white potatoes (a bit unusual), and whole slices of turkey and (I think) ham lunch meat, which had been folded into quarters. I've never seen lunch meat slices for fondue dipping before, but y'learn something new every day, I guess. And no, it's not a good fondue item, just so's you know. After all this, we considered dessert. I stupidly said "They can't possibly eff up dessert." (I should know better than to throw down like that, because I was wrong.) We ordered pistachio gelato, a simple, basic dessert that requires no preparation. I was excited when we got a large dessert dish with four scoops of green gelato. My excitement vanished when I took my first spoonful: it was cold and green as befits pistachio gelato but that's as good as it got. The texture was greasy--didn't know you could do that with gelato--and there was no discernible flavor of pistachio whatsoever. I tried several spoonfuls to be sure and, no, nothing. The four of us tried it and one of our companions said the flavor reminded him of an organic ice cream he'd had once made from mung beans. Apparently, the restaurant buys it from some place just down the street that I shall be sure to avoid. Overall, the food is truly appalling: almost nothing has much flavor and, where it does, you kinda wish it didn't. Mouth-feel is poor. But the service was good and the 20% mandatory tip was not too much of an insult. To summarize: if you like good service and don't care at all about what you're putting in your mouth, you should try Alpenrausch. If, however, you actually like tasty food that's well-prepared that you enjoy eating, you'll do better almost anywhere else. read more

So happy I was able to finally try this place! Came for dinner or a Saturday night and it was very lively! We made a reservation and got an indoor table but they had plenty of outdoor tables on their heated patio so there was plenty of room. The ambiance was exactly as advertised! Cozy European with fun decor like a nice warm ski chalet. We loved the food! The one thing I will say was we were quite hungry so it seemed like the portion sizes could have been a tad bigger. We ended up ordering an extra pretzel to hold us over. We got the pretzel which was amazing, salad, rosti, raclette, and the quail. Everything was so delicious and I'd order everything again for sure! They have a small lot in front but chances are you'll have to park on the street which is not biggie. For anyone not into strong 'fishy' dishes, probably best to skip this as the trout is pretty overpowering. Loved the roe & crème fraiche though! We also had the harvest salad & the pretzel, both were great. For mains we did the roasted quail & the venison frites, and OMG the venison was perfectly prepared. Such beautiful flavor! The huckleberry notes in the quail dish was really nice as well. The cocktails were lovely, my favorite was daisy chains which seemed like a more mellow version of a corpse reviver; bright & citrusy without being too overpowering. We finished our meal with the budino and some Kammer Williams. The only thing that fell a bit short was the budino. I have a major sweet tooth & have had many iterations of this dessert, so with that comes some opinions lol. A good budino is rich & creamy, silky and full of flavor. This version unfortunately really just lacked flavor. The fresh fruit & hazelnuts helped, but next time we'll try something else. omg this place is a rip off! This was the worst german food i've ever had! The fondue for $23 gave me the smallest amount of bread and sausage i've ever seen and the cheese was so bland and aweful! The sausage also bland. i got a burger which was the closest thing to edible that i got but wasn't anything special. The beer i had was odd but i don't hold that against them because it's the nature of the beast as far as beer goes. They also completely forgot to bring my buddies food and he had to ask what was up. They also put mandatory 20 percent gratuity and also additional health n wellness charge on the bill. In the end i think we all felt pretty ripped off. read more

We were excited to try this Bon appetite top 20 restaurant. First off- our server was amazing!!! Very knowledgeable and gave on point recommendations. The restaurant is very adorable- makes you feel like you are in a Swiss chalet. We had the cheese board, fondue, chocolate budino, and panna cotta. It was all fabulous!!! I read reviews complaining about service and I have to say, I think those folks were expecting US traditional timing vs European timing. Yes- It took over 2 hours from start to finish. Yes- we went 20 minutes or more before our server checked in. But we appreciated being left alone and being given time to just sit and conversate. We do not care for the pace of traditional US restaurants (trying to rush you through) and this was a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend stopping here for an old world style slow dinner!!!! read more

Service was somewhat acceptable for a party of ten with a good deal of room for improvement, as two in the party had significant wait time before receiving their orders after the other eight orders were delivered. As for the "the Zurcher" I order, the dish was greatly over salted and the Swiss style shredded potatoes appeared as if they had been leftover from the previous day, very crunchy and laden with grease. The most frustrating part of the entire experience is the fact they charge an automatic 20 percent gratuity and a 3 percent health and wellness fee on questionable service. The fondue we ordered for the table tasted strongly of the alcohol that was in it and is something I highly recommend passing on. Terrible taste and portion not worth what they charged for it. Service was also really slow and the staff acknowledged it and continued to apologize for it through the night. Took us about 2 and a half hours to get through the meal. read more

My husband made a reservation here after it was just named one of the best new restaurants by Bon Apetit! We decided to get the fondue, which seemed like it was the most popular order in the place. The fondue was so freakin good, and came with a bunch of different kinds of dippers. Probably the best fondue I've ever had. We had amazing cocktails, and the bartender was great at making suggestions, especially for digestifs after dinner (we sat at the bar, so it was easy to talk to him). Great ambiance, lovely dinner. 10/10 would do back again and order the fondue again! read more
