They had a nice draft and bottle selection of German beer. The food was delicious. The pretzel was scrumptious with 3 dipping sauces that were all good. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel, prepared breaded and pan fried like a Wienerschnitzel. It was cooked perfectly with the pork tender and thin. The red cabbage was great too. The warm German potato salad was not traditional. It tasted more like seasoned fried potatoes, but they were still good. My only suggestion would have been a little more gravy. My husband got the Maultaschen, which we had never had. It was a pasta filled with sautéed leeks & cheese, topped with asparagus, & mushrooms in white wine sauce...delicious. Yum! We hadn't been to Stammtisch since the year it opened (2014, eeeek, now I feel old). But we went again last Friday, and it was such a delightful place to go for lunch. Not crowded, with attentive but chill service. We had a delicious burger (hubby) with a fabulous acid-forward set of toppings; a delicious lentil-and-every-German-meat soup (me, because I am an Official Soup Nerd); a delicious pretzel with dips (us). Bit more of a pub vibe than a restaurant but they have plenty of great sounding dishes I haven't heard of tho I don't have much experience with German food besides schnitzels & wursts. We happened to come in during HH (weekdays 3-5) so we got a bretzel w/ beercheese of course ($8) and bratwurst served w/ sauerkraut, mustard & pickle spear ($9). The sauerkraut was a tad sweet IMO but the brat was juicy and tasty. We also got the Schweinsaxe (I think?) which was an enormous pork shoulder hunk w/ nice fried crackling skin on the outside & comes w/ red cabbage and spaetzl. Def recommend sharing this big boy. It was good and all but I wish there was a bit more flavor to it than just meat flavor. we have eaten here several times and ha e never been disappointed. I can't bring myself to order anything but their vegetarian maultaschen, which they cover in a deliciously flavorful gravy with mushrooms, sometimes bits of artichoke hearts, and asparagus, really great. Their beer cheese soup is the best i've had in Oregon too. It's not too thick and it's very cheesy. They obviously use a great beer in the making as well. The frites are always hot and perfectly crispy (husband gets them every time) and come with curry ketchup which he loves. They have a great selection of beer, and a full bar. We love the ambiance. It feels much like several places we have both visited in Germany. Depending on the season, they have both outside and inside seating, lots of it communal, and the bar seating is great too. This is a cute German spot in NE Portland. As someone who speaks German, I appreciated that the menu titles were in actual German and not just a kitschy knockoff. The beer selection was also really nice and they offered a lot of different varieties from German breweries. I've been eyeing these guys for a minute but decided to stop here last minute and boy was I not disappointed. I got the pretzel that came with mustard, schmaltz and obatza (cheese spread). Although they don't make the preztel in house it was delicious nevertheless (from a German bakery called fressen). The shattering exterior had a faint layer of butter and the perfect amount of maldon salt while the interior was fluffy and chewy. The skinny parts where the pretzel twisted had the perfect slight crunch. They use Edmond Fallot Dijon so you know they're not messing around and shows that theyre using high quality ingredients. And don't get me started on the obatza! They mentioned it was a mixture of Camembert, Brie, shallots, paprika (gives it that orange color) and a few other ingredients, so good mixed with the sinus clearing heat of the mustard. The schmaltz had a great rich flavor and would be yummy if used to fry some latkes or in a gravy. I should've known they were gonna be that good when the hostess asked me how many I wanted! I met some dear friends for dinner here due to the close proximity to where we'd all be that night, and I'm very happy that we chose Stammtisch. I'd been longing for great schweinzhaxe since Gustav's doesn't really exist anymore (save for the one location in Vancouver), and a trip back to Munich is a bit impractical. Stammtisch's example was quite good! Seems to be made the authentic way (roasting of a long period of time as opposed to a quick deep fry to crisp up a braised pork knuckle before service). It was tender, crispy, and delicious. On our visit, they were out of Kartoffelpuffer, so we opted for currywurst (lovely, but the wurst link was on the cold side) and a "Bretzel", which was the best I've had since I was in Munich. I'm not a beer drinker, but their variety of German imports was impressive. We were seated outside, which I generally hate, but it was after dark, and the nice overhead lighting and cozy location of the outdoor seats made it pretty easy to forget that we were outside. Service was friendly and prompt, which was great (again, being outside, it seems easy to be forgotten about). I'd definitely return, and am looking forward to our next visit. read more

It's difficult to name my favorite restaurant, but Stammtisch comes quickly to mind. And for beer it's #1. They added a new yummy item to the Happy Hour menu: fries topped with a delicious ragu-like tangy pork. Turns out my favorite beer, the dark Hef with banana cloves, is a seasonal. I had to settle for the lighter Ayinger Brau Weisse which is more suitable for hot weather. As I've stated in previous reviews, the glassware they use makes a positive difference. I hate to downgrade a review for a beloved neighborhood restaurant, but last night's experience just left something to be desired. The first few times we ate here, the food was so excellent. I always like to get the fish special, which they rotate seasonally, and it's been wonderful. The last time I had it, the meal was probably one of the top 10 I've had in Portland. We decided to go last night for my birthday. Our server was very friendly and efficient. For an appetizer, we split the Maultaschen, which is a pasta dish. This was very, very good, sort of like a German version of ravioli in a delectable cream sauce. But things went haywire with our entrees. This time, the fish was salmon and it just wasn't very good. It was very, very bland and slightly sour, not exciting or special at all. My husband got the pork shoulder, which was very fatty. They top it with some sort of fried pork skin and when you pull it up, it's just all fat. It was really gross and unappetizing. I saw someone else complaining about this in another review, maybe take it off the menu? I decided to get the apple strudel for dessert and that was delicious. But when the appetizer and desserts are the stars of the meal, something is off. We will definitely come back, but this visit was somewhat disappointing. read more

Anyway, I stopped in for a quick drink, pre-Thanksgiving and even though the place was packed, the bartender was totally attentive- even giving samplers of a couple of brews to my indecisive wife. Service is spot on: efficient yet friendly and not rushed. These guys are pros. My refreshing Bitburger Pils was just the ticket on this evening and the plate of fries came out nice and thin and crispy - just the way we like 'em - with a lovely curry ketchup to dip them into. We had a highly disappointing experience at this restaurant. We arrived on a Wed at about 6pm. We were seated immediately because the restaurant was not busy. The waitstaff asked us for our drinks order, which came promptly. We ordered a pretzel which took way too long to arrive, and when it did arrive it was hard as a rock. We could barely cut into with a fork and knife to share. It might have been over baked because it took well over half an hour before the pretzel came after ordering it. At that point we thought that the rest of the food should be out shortly since we had already waited 30 minutes for the pretzel. Unfortunately, it was ANOTHER 30 minutes before our main courses arrived, this was after asking the waitstaff TWICE about the delay. Once again, the food was not very good. Generally, it was all very dry and tasteless. We ordered the Wienerschnitzel, Schweinshaxe, Forelle, and a burger. At least two of the dishes tasted like it had been just sitting under a hot lamp drying out. The Wienerschnitzel was the worst dish of them all, besides the pretzel. Basically, the service was SOOOO SLOW(the main course took an hour to arrive)and when we did get the food, it was so bad. We left feeling dissatisfied because we had waited over an hour for food, got overly hungry and irritable but ultimately were served subpar food. I hope that they make an effort to improve. I've been here once before when the service and food were better. But I don't think I will return because the experience left us in a bad mood. read more

I don't know why we waited so long to go here. It was always on my long list, but somehow never made it to the top. Until one October day, while we were out running errands and we became wicked hungry. My husband Google mapped nearby restaurants and mentioned Stammtisch. Yes, let's go!! I expected a wait, seeing as though it was a Saturday at noon, but we were seated right away, as if it was our regular table. Stammtisch tranlates to 'regular table,' and that's the way they treat all of their guests, like regulars at a corner pub. The cozy atmosphere feels a bit more like an old British pub, but the vast selection of German beers on tap proves otherwise. On that first visit, I ordered the Venusmuschein, a steaming bowl of clams in a complex tomato, basil, garlic and white wine broth that was ridiculously flavorful. Paired with the Paulaner seasonal ale, it was perfection! My husband ordered a Hofbrau original and the Reuben sandwich. To him, the Reuben is a benchmark by which to judge any retsuarant/pub, and after just one bite, this Reuben quickly jumped to the top of his list. It's the perfect balance of juicy pastrami and sauerkraut (both made in-house) with German gruyere, and Russian dressing on griddled rye. Doesn't get much better than this one. It was our first time trying that dish and we really enjoyed it. It's a big, roasted pig knuckle that is crispy on the outside and very tender on the inside. One serving was big enough to feed two of us. One of the people in our group ordered the Wienerschnitzel. That turned out to be a pretty good sized serving and was delicious. If you like soft, German pretzels, they have them here, too. We love trying new restaurants. Sometimes you find one that is really a hidden gem. This is one of them.
