I would give them 6 stars for the service and friendliness, and for the very good menu with lots of choices... and let's not forget the ice cream and milkshakes - those were delicious! However, the burger - the reason I got there - was mediocre at best. I've got a big Alpine Burger recommended by them, and the description looked awesome... the taste - not so much. The burger was kind of small-ish, way over cooked (i.e. bone dry) and just unbelievably salty. Don't get me wrong - I respect a burger joint that seasons their ground beef, and I like my burger seasoned and salted generously, but that was something different - all I could taste was pure salt. I honestly think that I might have just gotten unlucky - will actually not mind trying them again, but I did get what I got and it wasn't great. I can't really recommend this place anymore it's kind of gone down hill. Just received my order only to take a bite out of some fries which tasted old. I've had mcdonalds fries 2 days old taste better than these $3.50 small fries of doom. Stopped at this busy little burger stand while heading to Burney Falls. Several people placing orders so we got in line & hoped it would be worth it. Reviews were good! Saw ice cream cones come out & they looked tempting. We order the Alpine burger - really big - & a regular burger. Both were very good. The onion rings were so good! The sauce for them was really great. We also got a strawberry & a pineapple milkshake. I am still wanting another pineapple shake! I cannot pass through Burney without making a stop at Alpine. Their avalanches are my favorite-- a small with Reese's is my go-to and the perfect size for a mid-day treat. Their prices are great, their food is yummy, and they are relatively quick. It can get BUSY on a holiday or summer day but it is worth the wait. I've been here many times over the past 20 years. They have changed ownership a number of times in that span. They lose a star for only one reason: their soft serve ice cream cones. You might think that's a weird thing to complain about, but here's the thing... their soft serve ice cream used to be THE reason why we stopped here. We actually told anyone passing through that they had to stop to see the amazing size of the ice cream cones. The employees used to be very skilled at piling epic portions of ice cream on those little cones. Well, times have changed. A few years ago, ownership changed hands and the price of their ice cream went up, which I had no problem with. In fact, it was about time they increased those prices. BUT, the size of the ice cream went waaaay down. We still stop in occasionally, hoping for the best, and on rare occasion, we get someone who knows what they are doing and actually approaches the levels of awesomeness of days gone by. But more often than not, the size of the cone is actually smaller than Fosters Freeze. My family no longer tells people to stop here for a unique treat. Which is disappointing, since we own a vacation rental in the area and would love to recommend this place to guests as a "must-see". We still hold hope that someday, Alpine Drive Inn will return to its former glory. Now for the good news, and the only reason this place gets a full 4 stars: the food has actually improved a lot. Since the last change of ownership, the burgers became really good, the wait times became reasonable, and the interior got a much-needed refresh. So I have to give credit where credit is due... although the ice cream may have taken a few steps back, everything else has taken a few steps forward. Listen up I wouldn't be leaving this review if they weren't so rude to my party, I feel bad because they are a small local business but I feel like this has to be said. Ugh ok get ready for the long ride... first of all, NONE of the employees are wearing masks and many of the customers aren't either. That's just the beginning of the disappointments though. So I went up and asked for a chef salad (which was $10 btw) expecting it to have the least meat on it since all their other options are either chicken or beef. I asked for the salad and the teenage order taker kinda gave me a look and said well what dressing? And I said do you guys have vinaigrette and she scoffed at me and said uh no, like vinaigrette is so fancy right? And I said ok well what do you have and she said um ranch, thousand island, and bbq sauce. Like ok that's gross but decided on thousand island. She was very rude to all the other members of my group and was yelling and constantly having us repeat ourselves. It took forever to get our food and they gave our drinks to the wrong people. Then had the people hand them directly to us (who weren't wearing masks and coughing a lot). Talk about unsanitary! Not to mention the area it is in is super creepy, people were screaming out their cars as they drove by and catcalling the woman in my group and a bunch of bikers pulled up and were creeping us out. So just as I thought it couldn't get any worse... I got my salad. This nasty thing was made with the shredded iceberg lettuce you put on top of a burger as well as a few slices of tomato and PILES upon PILES of processed lunch meat. It smelled horrible and looked pretty gross. My husbands fries were cold and his bbq burger bun stale. My iced tea was basically murky water. Basically the whole place was unsanitary and pretty gross. I really had high hopes because it was small and local but I would never ever go back it was a pretty horrible experience and I was dying to get out of there. Ok, here's the deal. I grew up in the North State. I know the area. I have made the drive between Redding, California and Boise, Idaho over 100 times in the past 25 years. It's a shame that we rarely stop in Burney, since it's usually early in the morning or late in the evening when we pass through. Today, however, we were lucky enough to be in Burney around lunchtime. A quick yelp search for lunch led us to the Alpine Drive Inn, which put a smile on our faces and in our stomaches! My wife and I both got simple cheese burgers according our typical pattern (no onions for me, extra pickles and no tomatoes for her), I got fries and she got onion rings. To cut to the chase, we enjoyed our lunch greatly. The burger meat tasted really fresh, and all of the standard toppings were fresh and crispy. I would have enjoyed a sesame seed bun, but the standard bun they provided was very good as well. The fries were cooked nicely, and properly salted (according to my tastes). My wife said that the onion rings were just OK, but since I'm not an onion guy at all, I will quote Chief Bogo... "I don't care...". The service was great, the place was clean, and had a steady flow of regulars picking up lunch while we were there, so it is clear that this is a Burney Institution that should not be missed. If you need to stop in Burney enroute to Redding or Cedarville, this is the place to stop. Really nothing else as good along the way. French fries are those perfect combo of crisp and tasty. Hamburgers are scrumptious. There is no comparison to the lame fast food choices and this burger place. SO worth the stop. If it's open, check it out. You will not regret it. They take forever so don't expect it to be quick just because your in the drive through. The fries are only like an inch long so sauce gets on your fingers when you try to dip them, AND they've raised their prices! It was a Wednesday and their hours say they are open to 8pm. It's 2pm and we walk about a mile through 100 degree heat. We get there and.........they are closed. We're in town for a visit to the falls, saw the good reviews, so decided to have dinner here. They did a great job getting my order correct. I made several changes to my burger, and they got them all right, which is a rare thing. Plus, the patty was cooked perfectly; it was done, but not overdone or dry. It was cooked exactly the way I like it-no red or pink inside, but still moist and juicy. The mushrooms were also good-not overly wet and soggy as I've sometimes had at other places. Alpine's staff and owners are exceptionally friendly, too. The fifth star is for a couple of other reasons: 1. I ran a red light about a block from here with a CHP right on my ass, and he stopped for the light and didn't chase me. I pulled into Alpine thinking he might follow me in, but he cruised right on past. I thought I was off the hook (except for the Karmic payback that's obviously still coming my way for running the light), but 15 minutes later as I'm eating my burger the same CHP pulls into Alpine's lot and parks next to me. I'm thinking he recognizes my rig and is going to bring out the ticket book as soon as I walk back to it and unlock the door, thus revealing myself as the guilty party. But no. As I drive off, he's just sitting there waiting for his lunch, fiddling with his smart phone. Dude just wanted his Alpine Burger. 2. While I'm waiting for my food outside, a glum-looking guy is sitting by himself the next table over. The owner calls out, "Bitter party of one. Your food is ready. Bitter party of one." I love this place! I've eaten here 4 times and it really is a very spot place for classic drive-in eats. My last visit found me ordering a double cheeseburger, onion rings and a raspberry shake - go ahead, call me fat. I forgot to ask for the burger without mayo, since I'm not a fan of that condiment, but it was applied judiciously so not a biggie. The patties are good-sized and cooked just about medium and very tasty! Onion rings were also good and not excessively greasy. They gave me some ranch dressing for the dipping at no extra charge. Went on a road trip heading to Pendelton Oregon in a Huge RV. On our way there we stopped at Alpine Dive Inn. It was a very hot and long road trip. The service was the best, super friendly staff, clean restrooms and Ice cold water . The food was the best burger we've had in a looooong time. Burgers are Huge, fries are made perfect and no greasy old smell to them. Ice cold soft drinks and I root-beer float was AWESOME! Thank you to all of the staff at Alpine.
