Kudos to Alpine Valley for hosting events during the summer and making snow for all the downhill skiing and snowboarding recreations. They have a decent lift ticket pricing. Lifts run at a reasonably faster speed than competing ski resorts. Runs are also longer than competing resorts. I would say the runs are softer than other resorts, so you can feel good going down Midwest black diamonds. They have ski and snowboard rentals including the shoes. Rental fees are separate. Decent amount of runs and lifts. Their food is great wait staff is helpful and friendly and the wait for food doesn't take too long. The lodge cafe offers hot drinks, bar food, bar, and sometimes live music! It's a nice nearby getaway for folks from the Milwaukee and Illinois area. Parking is also decent. They also have lockers for small and big sizes. Small ones cost 75cents each time you open the locker. $20 for all day. I'd definitely come back for a nice nearby drive away. read more

Why 4 stars - the main reason is, it's less than 2 hours from Chicago. So for most people this can be a day trip. It also has the longest runs anywhere close to the city. Next one is Devils Head or Cascade and both are at least 3 hours. For me , that's not a day trip. read more

I do like how many beginner runs they have. Makes a great spot to practice and not have many large runs to go down. However, the ski lift attendants don't pay attention much. They're too busy taking to each other rather than paying attention to the guests on the lifts to make sure they're safe. I just don't feel safe on the lifts unless I see them really paying attention. The bar and the food is a good place to hang out. They have smores to make by the fire. It's alright. I just feel like the attendants just need to be reminded to pay more attention to the lifts. read more

Came here on a Friday morning in late January and the place was not too busy. By the time we left around 5pm though, after school groups were arriving and it started getting more crowded. Definitely recommend a weekday if you can play hooky from work! The standout of this review was with my ski instructor though. I signed up for a group lesson at noon and ended up being the only one in the class. The instructor (I feel horrible for forgetting his name- I should have written this review sooner!) was AMAZING! He really took his time and was so patient teaching me how to ski, he definitely converted me from snowboarding! By the end of the lesson I was feeling really confident and ready to advance off of the bunny hills. The purchase of rental and lift tickets was a breeze. The rentals were not the most comfortable but I think that is common. Huge free parking lot. Small restaurant too. I recommend bringing your own lunch and eating in the lodge. read more

They only do walk ins for lift tickets and rentals. I arrived on a Saturday morning around 10AM and the parking lot was already full and resort was busy. Be sure to bring quarters - I recommend at least $2.25. Lockers are $.75 quarters to lock every time. There's a quarter machine in the main building but I don't recall where it is. They have a cafeteria on the first floor and a restaurant/dining area and bar upstairs. You can get a cup of water in the cafeteria for $.50 instead of buying a water bottle. I went on january 8th for only about 3 hours because I could not handle how the ski lift attendants were. I was on the beginner lifts and there were two guys who seemed to be in their early twenties. Just standing there judging, I saw them point at another beginner and then as soon as he went up on the chair out of their sight, they then turned to eachother and laughed at him. It's not the biggest place or the best maintained at times but it's a great place to go if you are in northern IL and especially if you are teaching people! I've taught my brother, my little cousin, my best friend and a couple other friends how to snowboard at alpine (7 people in total). My little cousin is now taking his brother there, the pricing isn't too steep and the runs aren't too short either. There isn't anything to really get into detail about here. We came on the Saturday of MLK weekend, so it was likely busier than normal for that reason, but the amount of people there was insane. It seemed like they oversold tickets for this day. When we got to the counter to get our equipment, the two girls assisting us were extremely rude. By the time they slammed our boots on the counter in front of us, they were already calling over the next guest, leaving us no time to ask questions. They also didn't have my size ski boots (10) and only had 9 or 11. I asked for the size 11 and if I could exchange it for a size 9 if they were too big. They said the cost of doing that would be $10. Sorry, but if you don't have my size, I should be able to exchange my boots without paying, considering the steep price we already paid for the ski pass and the equipment. I also had a slip of paper with my ski ticket information, and they stuffed it in my ski boot. I didn't see them do this however, so I didn't know where my ticket was. When I asked them where it was, they essentially said "I don't know. Next customer!" If I didn't see you put my ticket in my boot, and you're the one putting it there, you should know where it is! Incredibly unhelpful. The lines for getting up to the top of the small hills were very long as well, wrapping around the bottom of the hill. This proved to be dangerous because many people coming down the small hills didn't know how to stop and were crashing into people in line. It was chaos. This place needs way better crowd management and customer service training. read more

I visited Alpine Valley Ski Resort over MLK weekend. It was my second time here (first time was a few years ago) and I echo the sentiments of some of the other reviewers that if you are at all concerned about catching/spreading COVID, then do not come here- stay home! I honestly wish I had checked Yelp before deciding to go, because I most definitely would have gone another year. NONE of the employees whom I encountered were wearing a mask while helping customers in crowded indoor spaces. I estimate that over 90% of guests did not wear masks. Since the pandemic started over two years ago, I have never been in more crowded, non-masked indoor spaces. Had I not just made an almost 2 hour drive from Chicago to go skiing and bought myself a new pair of ski pants the day before, I probably would've gone home to avoid being part of the problem. Even though I had an N95 mask on the whole time that I was indoors while waiting in line to pay, it was little comfort with people talking and coughing in close proximity to you. It is disappointing that the manager(s) of this ski resort could care less about a greater problem our country has been continuously battling. What Omicron variant? During any other non-pandemic time, this is an excellent place to come for a day ski/snowboarding trip. So after being packed indoors like sardines to rent ski equipment and pay for the lift (a total of $100 per person), I finally made my way to the slopes. The whole skiing experience was really fun. I am very novice when it comes to skiing, so I can't speak to what this place is like for the advanced pros, but I think it's a great place to start if you're a beginner like me. The green and blue slopes were doable after practicing on the bunny slopes. They also offer ski classes for both adults and children. I do see myself coming back here in the future, but definitely not again until this pandemic is over. read more

My family is new to skiing and we loved Alpine Valley. The rooms are being updated, everything was very clean -- but it had that old school ski aesthetic that was great for the price point. The instructors were awesome and really educational to help us learn the basics. A few in our party were much more skilled and had a great time enjoying the more advanced runs. There's also a lovely indoor pool with a hot tub that was very clean and well maintained. It was much needed after our day outside. We enjoyed the bistro. It was comfy, had a beautiful view of the slopes, and had a great menu selection. All in all we were very happy with our experience and would recommend for anyone to come visit for a few days! We attended the Beer Fest on 12/06/25, once again, there was not enough table space to set your beer and food down. The raffles were a joke. We were given a raffle ticket when we purchased our ticket $55, and was told to hang onto it. We never heard the raffle being held, as usual. We missed so many raffles because of the exclusive raffle calling and the blocking of the sheets to put in a bid on the silent raffle. One of the managers even pulled the sheet out of our hands when we tried to enter a bid! So rude! We have attended every Beer Fest held at Alpine and unfortunately, it has gone down hill and this year was the absolute worst event held. We won't be back for any events at Alpine! The food was ok, but there were big men at the food tables eating because there was not enough tables to enjoy the food. There was a total of 3 tiny tables for 75 - 100 people attending. So the guys in ski boots were forced to eat at the table where food was for the paying guests. It was a joke. Do not attend this event! The management picks the raffle winners, wink wink. Alpine is truly great! I took a ski lesson with Rich and he was the absolute best! Very thorough and took his time with me. He was very patient as I am not a fast learner, never once did I feel rushed or him getting annoyed with me. He explained things well and made it fun. I was afraid in the beginning because I know skiing can be a dangerous sport. By the end of our session I was very comfortable and best of all had a lot of fun! I will be back for sure and I plan to get my husband a lesson next ! I will be requesting Rich but all of the staff are so friendly and helpful! We are trying new things and I think this is a great place to start. Skiing, Snowboarding and a great winter way to experience the sun. Last night we checked in and went to our rooms. We had to get a double Queen when we made our reservations. All the suites apparently filled up pretty quickly. The beds are comfy, and the pillows mixed firm and or soft. The bathroom is reminiscent of grandma's but big enough. We had three in one room and four in another. No microwaves or fridges but a table and two chairs, coffee and a coffee pot and flat screen tv makes the room cozy enough to settle in for the night. In less than 24 hours I have learned the first lesson of winter activities at a ski lodge...this is no concept for a small budget. Dinner was well over $300 for a group of 7. $17 for 2 coffees and a ham roll (ham with lettuce on a flour tortilla.) Equipment rentals for four $500+. Upside, this is an activity for families. There are lots of little one walking around and yes they have on skis. Staff are visible and in motion. I was glad to see staff on foot, on skis and on motorized ski mobiles. As a worker wise work never ends, I was able to find a corner in the pub with sockets. So I was able to charge up and work while away. There is a room and space for all including a swimming pool/whirlpool, game room, diner, cafe and bar/pub. I'd definitely come again. BUT! I'd bring my own cooler of drinks and a case of snacks and fruits. We rated the food in the cafe as not good to average. Our group made a consensus that school lunches are better than the food here. The pub food is better than the cafe but portions are small and not equivalent to their prices, and the restaurant food...if your order real entrees are really tasty and portion sizes are not too bad in comparison to their pricing but stay away from the baked fish unless your on a low sodium diet and be sure to ask for extra lemon and butter it might be really dry. This place gets some bad reviews but out is a good resort. Only an hour from Chicago northern burbs, and maybe an hour from Milwaukee, it is a decent resort. They have some of the best snow making equipment in the area and they open in November, as a result. I had a blast. Some nice intermediate hills that are relaxing to ski and they have some decent length for the Midwest. For the afternoon I choose the Advanced hills. One was used earlier for races and it was open in the afternoon, this hill is steeper up top and narrower at the top. The hill next to it is a bit easier and you can get some speed even while controlled parallel skiing (I reached around 50 MPH during the day). They have a decent lodge to get food. One important item is that the outside grill is CASH ONLY; not sure about the inside. read more

Alpine Valley was the first place I ever skied back in the day. I went up here w/one of my buddies from High School many years ago. I was hooked on skiing from the first time I went. I didn't know what the hell I was doing but I remember bombing down the hill and the rush it gave me as I started picking up speed. Fortunately the hill was small enough that I wasn't going like 60 miles an hour. When I got to the bottom I didn't know how to stop so I use to lay down cause there was a creek on the bottom. This use to be one of my go to places to ski back in the day until I started going north to the upper peninsula in MI & out west to Colorado. Alpine is a little more scenic then Wilmot Mt. It looks more like an Alpine Ski Area, but the lines are too long & the crowds can be crazy for a 30 second to 1 minute run downhill. Still it's nice for a quick day trip. I also use to go up here for concerts in the summer. Many a wasted night partying, drinking & doing drugs & listening to music. I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert @ Alpine Valley before his tragic helicopter crash after the concert. So sad to lose a musical blues master at such a young age. This dude could jam read more

I attended the Tyler Childers concert on Saturday, July 26th 2025. I was not happy with my service. I have attended Alpine Valley twice before this and had no problem. But this time it seems as if no one actually knew how to do their jobs. First we asks TWO different people entering if early admission was vip, and they said no, continue right for general admission. Okay that's fine. But when we parked and asked another worker if our early admission counted as vip, she said yes they were the same thing and if we wanted to exit to attend out other guests that we could. So we did as she said and were rejected at the end of the line. This man greeted us with animosity as soon as we spoke to him. He told us we were holding up the line when we were just trying to ask a question and get clarification, as he identified himself as "the vip man". He then didn't scan our tickets, and barely even looked at our tickets, saying they were general admission, despite our other joiners getting into vip no problem. So basically we paid vip for absolutely no reason and were treated with upmost uncertainty and disrespect. We then had to walk over to vip after having to park general admission, and subsequently the same "vip guy" made a very condescending comment as we were walking in. I am very unhappy and disappointed with our experience and hope this doesn't happen with anyone else that attended Alpine Valley. read more

The least they could do is offer WiFi - especially to the parents who have to sit there for 2 hours while their kids learn. Avoid during this COVID season!! There are little to no restrictions for COVID. Signs requiring masks are posted yet most patrons and staff are NOT wearing masks. One of the staff members told me the past 3 Saturdays from Christmas to Mid-January have been VERY busy. I was told the capacity is 10,000 people, which they admit they would never hit.... and should not be a capacity for any location right now... The parking is a disaster. There was a line of cars 1 mile out from the parking lot. They were shoveling snow for overflow parking. It took us 1.5 hours to from beginning of the line to find a parking spot. And it was VERY muddy - I felt sorry for everyone with bright white snow pants. Rental line stretched down to the opposite end of the parking lot. I advise sending one person to the lift ticket building to purchase tickets while others wait in the rental line. You can fill out your paperwork in line. People were NOT social distancing or wearing their masks. It felt packed like an amusement park line. If you have your own gear, the line for lift tickets is VERY quick. You would avoid almost all lines all together. The rental pick up process was very swift and efficient. It didn't look like they would run out of rentals. I was advised if they did run out of rentals, you would be fully refunded. The slopes were absolutely crowded. The lines for ski lifts and conveyers were a 10-20 min wait. There was no crowd control when off-boarding ski lifts that people frequently collided or dodged people congregating there. Although Alpine slopes are fun, it lost its fun due to the high volume of people. The indoor dining area should be a warning of its own - I don't understand how they haven't been shut down for allowing so many people inside to eat. I didn't dare enter because it looked like a steamy covid petri-dish. I have never seen a building so packed pre-covid or even during covid. We brought our own lunch and ate at our car. The only pro to AV was that tickets did not need to be purchased in advance. But that also led to the major con of WAY too many people visiting. read more

Our family has been planning an event at the resort and the communication from the head of the events team, Allison, has been abysmal as well as rude whenever she asked a question that remotely challenges her shady approach to business. one week before the event they informed us that the elevator to the floor where the event (for mostly elderly people) was broken. they had known for 4 weeks about the broken elevator!! they charged us labor for changing the original room furniture around without every confirming we could still use the room - which we cannot because we have people with canes and walkers who will be unable to use the stairs and need an elevator. Allison only finally informed us that the elevator was broken because we showed up unannounced to see the layout. at that point there was backpedaling and she admitted there was no elevator, changed our room to a ground floor space and offered to through in coffee but refused to refund the room change fees for the original room. she also hung up the phone on us when she was criticized for lack of communication and transparency about the elevator even though we had just called 36 hours before. at best this is poor event planning and management. at worst this is shady business. since we are long time patrons of the resort we will continue to use other programs that they have, but buyer beware if you're going to host an event. read the fine print, ask lots of questions and stay on top of them or you will possibly end up paying more for room change and labor fees that the actual cost of the event space - even when that room is not fit for your purposes. read more

The ski hill is always way to crowded on the weekends and during the week to save money they only operate one of the fast lifts up the main hill. Last year the snow was terrible because of weather. Not their fault but now they raised annual passes again almost on par with Colorado. Not renewing. Single day passes over priced as well. Recommend others check out Devils Head. This place is an absolute Covid Disaster. If you are concerned about the virus you should steer clear of Alpine Valley. No grey area. First of all, most ski places are requiring reservations in advance and limiting the number of people at the resort. Not here. Not only are they not requiring advance purchase, you actually can't buy tickets in advance or on line, only in person. Right off the bat, this encourages too many people to show up. To make matters worse, it seems that there is no limit to the number of tickets sold or people on the slope. If they do have some limit on the number of tickets sold, it is way off the Covid safety spectrum for the number of people congregating inside or out. We arrived first thing in the morning, maybe 15 minutes after opening. We pulled in to a sea of vehicles that didn't stop coming for hours. Their huge lot is packed to the gills. Very long lift lines. People everywhere. The eating area outside jammed. The inside and food area is seriously frightening. People wall to wall getting food eating. Tons of people everywhere without masks. No social distancing. I mean the place is packed without any restrictions. They do have signs up to wear masks. They do have sanitizer around. They did add the ability to pay with credit cards for food. I think that about sums up their Covid efforts. No mask enforcement and no restriction of number of people inside or out. Apparently no state regulations. I don't know, I realize that we make choices of where to go. This is just my observations from being here. Given this disturbing behavior, I just cannot recommend this place. Lastly, a few days after being there I received an email touting the fact that they are not limiting the number of people at the resort or limiting the number of tickets. I have enclosed a screen shot of their email. They apparently think their policies are a positive thing and don't seem to understand that their resort may actually be promoting Covid spread or that they may be creating a superspreader situation. Combine this attitude with the insanely high positivity rates in Wisconsin, and lax attitudes towards mask wearing and the virus in general. We are all sick of this thing but that is no excuse .....this is utterly irresponsible. read more

A small but fun ski resort with adequate facilities. In particular the children ski school is excellent. My daughter learnt skiing in a mere two hours... From a clown! Literally a clown, but the clown is an instructor, a very effective and fun teacher. Accompanying my daughter, I saw how his team and himself taught the group with great clarity and enthusiasm. Of course, as you can imagine, you'll never be bored with a clown! The ski field is small with merely a 300 feet vertical drop, yet the facilities and well designed terrain makes it a fun place to ski. It is especially suitable for those learning or honing to ski or snow board. As the lifts are adequate, the ride up is quick without much wait. Thus the multiple rides up and down were more pleasant than imagined. read more

All of Alpine's runs go straight down. This means a few things: 1. You could spend more time on the chair lifts than you do snowboarding down the slopes. 2. Little variety. 3. Any signs of icyness, which Alpine is known for, will send you flying straight down these runs even faster than usual. 4. This makes for a potentially monotonous day. This was my first time skiing. The hills were pretty fun but the chair lifts are kind of old, still runs smoothly. It is very easy to navigate around to find the rentals everything is marked. Staff inside is mostly helpful but don't have much to say about questions you may have to ask. Out on the hills the instructors are very nice and have lots of tips on how to ski or snowboard. This review is for the skiing part of the resort. I worked and skied at competitor Wilmot Mountain when I was growing back in the seventies but now realize that Alpine is - in my opinion - the best of the three ski resorts in the area - beside Wilmot and Alpine there's the Mountaintop at Grand Geneva. The lifts here are fast and modern - the terrain is varied and challenging for most skiers and there are plenty of eating options. I prefer eating in the second level bar area - they have a very nice selection of sandwiches and appetizers. I've had the fried walleye fingers (very tasty and nice portion) and a few of the wrap sandwiches. The waitstaff and bartenders are friendly and outgoing. I've never stayed at the lodge here so I can't comment on it other than to say the exterior could use a little freshening and maybe a coat of paint. The ski shop has a really nice selection of equipment and clothing. I had them tune-up a pair of skis snd they did a great job at a reasonable price ($35). I've heard weekends are crowded so if you can swing it consider a mid-week visit instead. With that said they do have fast quad chairlifts to keep things moving. All in all - the best place in the area to ski and even if you don't ski - worth a stop in the bar to watch those that do and have a few cocktails and a bite to eat. read more

Yes, signs everywhere to wear masks, but I only saw it enforced one time and lackluster at that-- a guy walking a full lift line asking people to put on their masks, but paying no attention to people immediately removing them after they passed. Kids and adults alike without masks all over the place. The rental area was frightening both early in the morning and end of day. Bathrooms were full of people who didn't care to wear a mask or limit the number of people in the bathroom. I had a pretty decent time skiing for the first time here. We came on a very cold Wednesday so it wasn't too packed at all. I was able to learn on the bunny hill in about 1.5 hours, and found it pretty adequate. Some of the employees saw me struggling and came over to give me a couple pointers, which was very kind. I felt like it was sort of a judgement free zone, which I appreciate. I was able to make it on two of the medium hills by the end of the day, but still got pretty banged up from falling. A couple of the other reviewers mentioned that there is a large river at the end of the runs that isn't really roped off. I didn't have any trouble with this but I find this extremely problematic. Lawsuit waiting to happen! So be careful. My biggest issue is with the indoor lunch/dinner cafeteria area. The lodge is one of the most outdated places I've ever seen, and NOT in the charming way. Take note that it is cash only. You will have a lot of trouble eating if you have any sort of dietary restrictions....literally everything on the menu is some sort of fried food. I don't even think they offered a single salad. Food is overpriced too. You might be best off having some sort of a picnic in your car if it's not too cold out. My rating is for the hotel rooms. Both our rooms had mildew/mold smell. it was so humid as the air conditioners are ancient. The carpeting felt wet. Seriously, pull out that carpeting. It's so gross and stained. They could have cleaned the toilet as well before putting on the strip of cleanliness. Our window did not lock and we were on the ground floor. Were told not all windows lock in that area. The staff were very nice and friendly however. But clean the place up. read more
