If you want to be given a Quote and then have it double or triple for no reason other than they felt like it. Then please bring your vehicle here. Was given a quote of about 180 for an A/C service then after bringing it in the quote tripled because of labor they didn't account for when I originally called. As in 4 plus out of labor on what should have been a 30 minute job. DO NOT GO HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE THERE ARE OTHER MERCEDES AND BMW TECHS IN THE BLACK HILLS AREA. read more

i do not trust these guys! had some work on an axle, thought it was over priced but has them do it anyway out of convenience. got the car back running terribl, which i didnt even ask for engine work. got told some bs mechanic jargon, exact same line from two employees so i knew something was strange, was suggested more work. thankfully i had my friends look it over. Recently my BMW started "bucking " intermittently so off to Al's it went. Fearing a fuel pump issue or crank sensor problem I was relieved when they identified the issue of a couple loose wires that were causing the problem. My son had vehicle problems and I had the vehicle towed to actual dealership repair shop and they immediately said it would cost a lot of money to fix with just just assuming the age of the vehicle. They end up admitting they didn't want to look at it. ''I called TMA of rapid city and explained my problem and referred me to Al's D & I and that they work with all kinds and they would probably be able to help out. I had used Al's D & I for 3 of my import cars. I called Al's and scheduled a service and was quoted a price...keep in mind this is just a standard service for the number of miles on my car. When I picked up the car at the end of the service, the total amount billed was SIGNIFICANTLY higher than I'd been quoted. I was charged $800 for labor alone (the car was there for less than a half day). I questioned the labor cost and they hemmed and hawed and didn't really have an explanation for it other than they'd done "extra services" they couldn't explain. I called the authorized dealers in Billings and in Sioux Falls to ask what that service would have cost in total. Both dealers quoted $695 for Parts AND Labor at either of the authorized new care dealers (I have an import and no authorized dealer for that brand in Rapid City). I will NEVER go to to AL's D & I again. read more

Ok, so I paid Al's to diagnose my BMW issue. The told me specifically what was needed, so I was charged $130 and decided to schedule a second appointment. When they finally got the part, they put it in and it didn't work for various reasons. They removed the part and put in my old, not working, part--Then they decided to bill me for the labor even though they did not fix it according to their own diagnosis. I told them that I've never been charged by a shop for something the SHOP said was needed. I never signed anything stating I would pay no matter what the result. If I had told them to replace a part and if it didn't work, then that's on me. But when a customer pays for a shop's diagnosis and it doesn't work, well, that should be on THEM. So, I regrettably must state that I was very disappointed with the outcome. They did seemed concerned and wanted to fix the issue but without any guarantees. Bottom line, I'm out $$ for auto work that was in the same condition after as it was before. read more

From what I've heard around town those who have specialty cars trust only this place. With a reputation like that I'm glad I was able to get my Car repaired there. Took my wife's Lexus GX460 here for maintenance and battery issues. They did a good job and were straight forward with condition of filters, brakes, tires, etc. Cost was comparable to other places I have gone in Rapid City. Very happy with the service! read more

I guess people only yelp negatives. I was surprised to see only 1 star for Al's. They were recommended to me years ago after frustration with other incompetent mechanics in town (like... Firestone). They have only been everything I was told: reliable, reasonable, quick and efficient, always offering full explanations to anything needing repairs BEFORE they do the work, and estimates pretty closely match the final bill each time. It makes a world of difference getting a good car doctor, I'm glad to have AL's'! read more

I understand the frustration of the previous reviewer with the BMW Thermostat, but to put it in better perspective, the closest BMW Dealer is 360 miles away and Beemers are expensive to repair. I just referred friends from California who were traveling through and had the 4WD Shift lever come out in their hands after it was stuck in 4 Hi. Being a Tech Alum, I have friends in RC. They recommended Al's D&I, having used them locally. They fixed my friends' problem and got them back on vacation quickly...and for FREE. Nice to know that Rapid City is still an awesome place with awesome people. Well played! read more

Recently left my 1971 Mercedes 280S at this shop for repair. When I picked it up it was dented in the left rear panel and the trim and tail light were broken. Estimates are running $1,700 to repair. Shop has no liabiity insurance and will not pay for anything. My husband and I had spent over $3,000 in the last year at this place. Do you think we will ever go back? read more

We highly recommend this repair shop. We had been traveling cross-country in our motorhome, when our jeep broke down. Not knowing who to go to, as we are not from this area, we turned to Yelp and customer reviews for a good mechanic. Martin at Al's D & I was a true professional. He fit us into his busy schedule, and was able to perform the repairs needed in a timely manner, and at a reasonable price. This was not an easy job for him, as we have a 1976 fully restored CJ 7 Jeep, so parts are not readily available. He was able to locate a new flywheel and get the job done. The jeep now runs great, and we are towing it behind the motorhome on our way to Wyoming thanks to Al's D & I Auto Repair. Many thanks again Martin, Dan and Annette :) read more

Seemed untrustworthy and unknowledgeable about the parts for my vehicle. They charged me more than $100.00 of the price they quoted me at originally. Additionally, when my car was brought to them it was dead. However, before it died, the brake light and heater were working. When I picked it up from the shop, the heater and brake light were out. They offered to replace the bulb for at least $35 (after I spent $540 for them to put in a new battery). They didn't even bother to look to see if a fuse was blown for the heater fan. Would not recommend this business to anybody. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would. Sadly, they totally rob their clients because of location. Stating they aren't able to get parts. They charged 400 for a thermostat for my bmw and 300 for labor. Stating it's a four hour job. Given I was on vacation in south Dakota, there was little I could do but go along. I got a 600 estimate and in the end it was 710. The part actually cost 60-100 tops and I was billed 4 hours labor for a 2-2.5 hour job (thats including the diagnosis, which you can get for free most places so I'm even being lenient). If it'd been 500, or even the estimated 600, I would've said nothing, but 710 is insane and just abusive. Stay clear of this place, do not be fooled. read more
