Just went there for breakfast a few days ago.. the service was friendly and good was great! I would deffy go back!

I've been living in the area for years, and finally visited Al's Grill. It was a Saturday morning, and I was seated right away (even though they were busy). My food came quickly and it was exactly how I ordered it. The staff was very friendly. The waitresses all had short hair and wore jeans and an Al's Grill tshirt. It was really cute. The person at the register asked me how everything was, which I really appreciated. Now, regarding the food: it was sooo good! This is what breakfast should taste like. This was the best breakfast I've had in a very long time. I also had coffee and orange juice, and they both were delicious! The food and drinks reminded me of diner food from my childhood, which is rare because restaurants now days tend to try to cut corners or just aren't very good. I'll be back! read more

This is my absolute favorite place for breakfast around Oak Park. Some of the other diners in the area gross me out with their runny eggs and dirty tables and floors. But Al's is always clean, fast, friendly, efficient, and the food is always good. The biscuits and gravy are a favorite of mine, so I usually end up ordering them as a side dish for the table to share. The skillets and classic egg breakfast plates are so yummy! My go to place for skillets and country fried steak, that sausage gravy , is fantastic, it gets a lil crowded on weekends, but you wont regret it , they are fast and friendly , portion are great and spot on far as pricing,line can get long , but it moves dont be discouraged, im tellin you, you will enjoy yur tym spent here read more

Favorite brunch diner. My boyfriend and I love going here on Sundays. Definitely try the Mexican skillet or the gyros are bomb too!

I visited here for breakfast this morning. I ordered the ham and cheese omelet and coffee. My omelet tasted like it had been cooked near green peppers, which I do not like. Not sure if the grill is not cleaned enough or someone's else order was cooked too close to mine. My toast was too dark and dry. The hashbrowns were cooked properly. There is also no sugar substitute on the tables. Plenty of other traditional breakfast options in the area that I enjoy, so I am unlikely to visit here again anytime soon. read more

Service and food always excellent and I've been here a hundred times it seems. The owner is very nice and personable and accommodating. Corned beef hash and eggs hit the spot every time! I don't see the need to go anywhere else for breakfast. It helps that I'm just a block away! read more

Went for lunch here with the wife. Service was great, my wife ordered the Belt Buster Burger, I ordered a bowl of chili, a garden salad & chicken strips. Food came very quickly, big portions, the garden salad was huge, the chili was good & hot! My wife thought the burger was excellent. I see no reason why we wouldn't go back! read more

Love this place! Very warm atmosphere and our waitress was nice and attentive. I had the corned beef, hash, and eggs with toast and it was delicious! Alright, now I know this review may garner me some hate mail, but I can sum up my experience at Al's as: "A bit over priced and a bit underwhelming". That said, now let me explain this before my dog gets kidnapped by angry Al's loyalists from Oak Park. I have been here a few times now, so this review is not a knee jerk reaction to one bad experience. The food itself is decent at best. Now I love American diner food, but I just feel that Al's just lacks the punch needed to live up to all of the hype. Now, I know a lot of people have been coming here for years and learned to love Al's, but being the unbiased person that I am, I simply can't share the same love. The food is decent, the restaurant is clean and the waitstaff is reasonably friendly, but I just have a hard time paying over $10.00 (pre-tip) for a merely average breakfast for one. To me, I could go down the street to Delia's Kitchen, pay nearly the same amount and get a meal that is stellar and have leftovers for another awesome meal. Forgive me loyalists, as I just don't "get it". Maybe its like why people still pack Wrigley to see the Cubs lose (I am a Cubs fan, so I can say it)? Maybe it is why Harley riders think their bikes are practically invincible? Hell, maybe its even why men over 50 purchase a Corvette over a similarly priced (and more practical) BMW M3? I guess it all boils down to simple tradition. read more

Technically I would give this place a two and a half star rating, but since half stars aren't allowed, I'll give it a three. First off, I have to say that I went to Al's a lot when it was a little dive diner on the other side of the street. The food was always excellent. Since moving across the street things just don't seem as good as they used to be. I first tried the new restaurant years ago, about a year after they re-opened, and it wasn't as good as I had remembered. I've made Louie's in Forest Park my main spot since then. However, Louie's did some remodeling this past spring, so I decided to head over to Al's one day and give it another shot. Still wasn't impressed. This place is right next to a hospital and its geared for old people... Very bland food for the most part. Very cheap product on most things... Very few things are worth ordering, BUT the people are top notch. The owners and staff are very nice so I stop in and patronize them for a simple sandwich now and again.. read more

Too long of a wait for subpar food. I was at the hospital and decided to eat at the closest place. The place looks nice and staff is very friendly, but a little loud. I ordered veal because it sounded good, but was completely disappointed. I waited way too long for someone to take my order, two tables of people who came in after me were take care of first. After 30 minutes, I got a plate of food that was drowning in gravy. The veal tasted more like pork, the potatoes were cold and hard on the inside, and I couldn't eat the corn because it was covered I gravy. They should take this off the menu. The skillets here are amazing!! This place is old school--cash only (with an ATM in there though), and you have to stand in line to get your table. Waitresses are kind of weathered but experienced. It's very family owned which is nice. The food is outstanding, great for a day after night of going out. I wish they were open for dinner/later in the day. Unfortunately their hours coincide with my work schedule most days but it's a great go-to diner for brunch on the weekends! read more

Very good omelettes and crispy hashbrowns! Unfortunately they butter the toast, unless you tell them otherwise. I honestly don't know why places do that, and not just give you butter on the side. Al's has been around for a long time. I have frequented since it was across the street, before they built their current building. The food is pretty decent, what you would expect from a diner. I usually order the same thing.. eggs, hash, toast, sausage or bacon, and bottomless coffee. Cures whatever ailment you may have. read more

I love Al's! It is a family owned business and is a local favorite. They have a great selection of traditional breakfast and diner favorites and the service is always fast and friendly. It gets a bit packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings (especially when service lets out) but the staff are a well oiled machine when it comes to efficient cleanup and preparing for the next customer. The food is great. My favorite are the blueberry pancakes (sweet and fluffy). The skillets are yummy and so are the biscuits n gravy. Lunch items are great too. read more

I like the sunny, bustling atmosphere but sometimes its a little crowded for my taste. The waitstaff is experienced and good, they will get the cook to make "mickey Mouse" pancakes for your kids. We come often for breakfast and lunch because it's very close to our house and has generic diner food that my kids like. The coffee is fine. This is not food that I would rave about, but it's not bad. read more

Al's is the best anywhere near Oak Park! We like to explore the different restaurants near us to find good food. Al's is certainly good food and we keep going back. The waitresses are so nice and always ask how you are and sometimes spark up a fun conversation. The food is really good. My dad has a limited diet (including very low sodium) and they barely put salt on anything, which was perfect! Now we normally get their omeletes, which are absolutely amazing and come with good hash browns (you can ask for onions in them) and almost any kind of bread toasted as a side. I dream about their omelette with cheddar, broccoli, and sausage with a side of rasin toast, and I'm sad I'm moving away this year. Their 'seasonal' special - I think it just changes once a year, which is fine by me is right now the F.T.P.R. it's also amazing. They take a pecan roll, make it into french toast, and cover it with real maple syrup. Although it's not something I usually get it is heavenly. A solid four star rating. it's right across the street from the north side of Rush Hospital, so very convenient if you're visiting Rush. I stopped in for breakfast on an early Monday morning, so not really crowded. Tried the 2x2x2, and got the eggs scrambled, and turkey sausage for the meat. The eggs were cooked perfect, not over-cooked which a lot restaurants tend to do. The pancakes were light and fluffy....and fresh off the griddle! I hate when you get something that you can tell was sitting under a heat lamp...not this meal. It was hot, fresh, and delicious! Oh, and the service was spot on. Very friendly and never an empty coffee cup. As far as diner breakfasts go, Al's delivers the goods! Went for breakfast had the collossel skillet which consisted of hash browns, onions, peppers, ham and bacon with cheddar cheese. On top of that was a layer buscuits with gravy and 2 eggs over easy. It was delicious, It was like 3-4 minutes before my food was served. Sat on the counter, read Sunday paper. Best pancakes in town! I think there is an added flavor that makes them more tasty. You usually do not need to wait long on weekends for breakfast. Biscuits and gravy are also good. The coffee is watered down and cheap flavor. Just wish they had better coffee to go with the good breakfast. I would be willing to pay a little more for a cup for better quality.
