Won't go above a 1 star because Al's inventory has always been good. I typically find what I am looking for BUT holy smokes does he jack the prices on everything and is shady!! Uncle Mikes swivels kit he charged $30 for both items but he used the swivels in the kit on the left and then charged me for other swivels. Went in to show what Al did and you could tell he was going to keep trying to talk his way out of it. Won't come back i don't care if he has the items he cannot be trusted. This place is very very cluttered. About a foot path you can walk through so if there's more then one person in there your screwed. Second, half the employees aren't even familiar with half of the new laws so don't be surprised if your refused sale. Third they price gouge so much. Found something there for 28$. Al and Theresa are as genuine as they come and they are always willing to help. Need a scope mounted, work to your firearm Al can do it all. Al's Gun shop staff consists of Al, wife and his son. Al, some have stated is a knowlegeable fellow. Frankly, he has the personalily of shithouse rat. The wife is not much better, and the son is what you expect from the product of these two. I think Jr. is not the brightest bulb in the circuit. I bought an expensive sporting gun from them and the service was ok. However, upon returning to visit the shop and look around I was eyed with suspision like I was up to now good. It is ok if I drop a couple of grand in the shop and that is fine. When I come back, I felt I was unwelcome. I am a retired P.O. and disabled veteran with 22 years of service in the military and 10 years as a civilian police officer. I hardly fit the profile of a shoplifter or prohibited person. The shop is very very cluttered and I don't know how they pass fire safety inpections? I would save my money and go elsewhere. I walked in a few days ago looking for a new shotgun. The guy behind the counter offered to sell me a Stevens 320 for $290 i couldn't believe it when I saw the price I've seen them sell from $180 to $240 max at different stores. Al has excellent prices and a wide (maybe the widest) array of browning shotguns around..he doesn't carry the overhead of Kittery Trading post..I have purchased two brownings from him a 725 sporting and a CXS cross over and have been very satisfied with each purchase...The CXS was field grade white receiver CXS 30" but the wood was at least a grade II...he picked it up at one of the shot shows in Las Vegas really really nice gun....needless to say I am very pleased with the gun, the price and the service....I needed an additional IC Invector plus choke for skeet and Al was nice enough to order one at a substantial discount for me. Al's has been around for many years 35 plus. So I went in for four different ammo types. When I looked at price I was shocked. It was all overpriced. 9x18 Makarov 18-20 dollars. Not over 40 thats crazy. Same with 5.56 average 33-40 cents per bullet not 57. The the 45 long 50 bucks. I am all set. All that ammo is half the price at Chester Arms. read more

The two stars is "aimed" mostly at the high ammunition prices and poor selection of firearms. I don't have any experience with their customer service or services (like gunsmithing) that they may offer, so I will not comment on them. The ammunition prices are 20% to 70% higher than WalMart and online prices! Generic brass .223 Remington is $50 per 100 at Al's and only $35 per 100 at WalMart. The real price shock was standard 2.75 inch 12ga buckshot. Al's price for 175 rounds is $249 for Federal brand. WalMart's price is $144 for 180 rounds of Remington or Winchester brand. I'm not comparing apples to oranges here. I don't mind paying A LITTLE more to support a local business, but Al's ammunition prices are BY FAR the highest I've seen anywhere. Next, the lack of selection in firearms. I've never seen so many $1,000+ pistols (mostly 1911s) and $1,000+ rifles (mostly hunting rifles) in one place. I don't care to analyze the gun prices, but if the ammunition prices are any indication, I'm sure they are above average. Al's carries virtually no used firearms (over 90% are new) and carries very few inexpensive firearms, so their selection is useless to me. The shop is cluttered and I'd be surprised if there was 100 square feet of actual floor space. The staff was polite, but when I asked about military surplus ammunition, one the gentlemen on their staff suggested I use 5.56 NATO in my early Mini-14 (made in 1976 and chambered in .223 Remington). I remarked that they are not the same round, and he said "it's fine", knowing full well that I was shopping for ammunition for use in my older Mini-14. Needless to say, .5.56 NATO is potentially damaging (even dangerous) when used in older firearms chambered in .223 Remington. I don't want to completely down Al's. I'm sure there is something good about the place, I'm just not sure what that is. Overall, Al's strikes me as a hunting shack that caters to hunters and older folks. I saw nothing whatsoever that would appeal to me or the younger generation. read more

I have been shopping at Al's for many years now and while he is a bit of an acquired taste, Al is likely one of the most knowledgeable gun dealers I have ever encountered. This is my go to shop for ANYTHING Browning. Al will set you up correctly for whatever type of Browning gun you may be interested in. The whole staff when under pressure gets a little testy but give them the benefit of the doubt. This store is busy busy busy all the time and frankly I do not know how they all keep their sanity right now. Overall great store, good prices and a good staff who at the end of the day want to serve and and insure you are 100% satisfied. read more

Al quoted me a price for a Ruger over the phone called him the next day to confirm he still had the rifle and we went over the price $1299 pay cash $1199 Ok Al i'll see you in an hour.I Get there he thinks he's the only game in town with a real redneck attitude. I looked at the Ruger, I agreed to purchase it. give him $1200 cash Then he starts back peddling. These are hard to find so on and so forth. Tried to tell me he quoted me $1399 he would give me $100 off. Not what i wanted to hear or deal with after driving an hour to do business with someone dealing out of his garage...Drove to Shooter outpost Bought the Rifle for $1199..People i have some advice Deal with credible people and you don't mind giving them your money. After he tried to get me for the extra $100 i just kept my cool and said no thanks i'm all set... I've made two visits to this store and left disgusted both times. In both cases I was looking for very specific items (a particular style of holster and magazines for my pistol) and the guy behind the counter (I'm not sure if it was the same guy, as both these visits were years apart) didn't have them, but got obnoxiously pushy in trying to get me to purchase the items that he did have (which weren't even close to what I was looking for). When I objected to his suggestions, indicating I was intent on the specific items, he became even more rude trying to make me feel as though I was foolish for not purchasing what he had. It's not like I was trying to buy something that didn't exist -- as I was able to find the items I wanted at another gun store. It just irritated me that on two different visits I encountered the same type of bad business practices... which tells me this is how this place operates all the time. read more

Alright, I went back to Al's today. Had to give him another shot, because, frankly, I dig shopping in the double-wide. Kinda grows on you. And I've always sensed Al is a good guy deep down. Al was in a much better place than last time and was very kind today. And to his credit he has necessities for sale that NO ONE else has. This was a 4 star interraction with Al's Gun and Reel. Perhaps my experience in January was an anomoly. I was actually sad Theresa wasn't there. She starred in my previous review which for some reason has been "filtered" by Yelp. I have NEVER dealt with such a rude and pushy store clerk as I encountered in this place. First, it's an absolute cluttered mess (don't go in if you're at all claustrophobic). I've recently taken up shooting, so I'm somewhat new to the world of gun stores, but I really couldn't believe this place. I walked in to buy some ammunition, and get some prices on a new gun I want to get for myself. The prices here are absolutely outrageous, so I wouldn't buy the ammunition from this store. I'm willing to accept paying a bit more at a small specialty store, and typically I'm willing to pay a little more to support a local business, but the prices here were over the top. But my bigger issue was when I tried asking questions about the particular gun I wanted to get. The clerk completely ridiculed what I was considering (mind you, this particular firearm was one I was considering after a lot of research on my own, as well as consulting with the shooting instructor I had). I really suspect that this clerk did this because he didn't have the one I wanted in stock, not because there was anything wrong with one I wanted. He tried pushing me to buy this other gun that he had there, which I told him didn't feel comfortable in my hands. When I said that, he basically told me I didn't know what felt right for me anyway. What an ass. So that was it, I left without buying a thing, and I WILL NEVER GO BACK! read more
