I know what they are talking about with regards to "Down Range". I was here in the Fall with some…read morefriends who are members. I was looking up the location because they were talking about getting together soon. I would rather shoot my bow that shoot my pistol. I'm not comfortable with having the pistol range "Down Range' of the rifle range. There is so much land there. Why don't they have just a rifle range and just a pistol range. Why combine the two? I am sure the club has rules, but so much can go wrong with the way those ranges are setup. Otherwise, I didn't go into the club house so I can't speak of it. I did like that water along the side and one thing I will do with my buddies is to do some fishing there.

When you hear someone with a Southern accent talking about "goin' to the range," the image that…read morepops into your head is exactly what you'll find here. A hidden entrance, a long dirt road, a log cabin-style building, and some cleared ground. They have both an archery/trap range and a rifle/handgun range, but it's all self-directed, which I'm not really used to. We came with friends who are members and knew to bring their own everything. I've never been to a range before that doesn't have eye and ear protection available to rent or buy, so make sure you're prepared before you come. I had a few major safety concerns, which didn't end up being a problem because we were alone. But considering some of the people that show up to other ranges, I'm surprised I haven't heard about any injuries here. When you walk toward the rifle ranges, you are actually downrange. There is a paper sign warning you to look out for people shooting at you. This is terrifying. The path should definitely be widened so you're not in the direct line of a stranger's fire. *EDIT: I heard they're actually working on this. The rifle ranges are a set distance, with lines suspended for pinning targets. There is no pulley system, so to check your accuracy you actually have to walk downrange. If there is someone else shooting near you, you have to interrupt their session or wait. Pulley systems aren't expensive, and they would allow some flexibility in the length of the bay as well. Overall, it's a fun place to shoot because it's informal, but with nobody watching you it's easy to skip safety steps. I'll probably still join, but I hope everyone remembers that they are holding something that can easily injure and/or kill the people around them.

Great sales, range, and member staff! A wonderful building on top of that…read more Wow, I really want to have a review giving kudos to a single person, but I'd have to list everybody that I have worked with. If I have to exclude everybody else, fine, John is awesome! He makes amazing coffee. But if I was going to be realistic, I would have a list of their entire staff in this review. My biggest complaint may be the AC in the sales section, it tends to get way too warm during the hot days, which is disappointing. The range experience is great, when I ask for something exciting to try, they always have an honest answer and something new to try out. Additionally, their RSOs are awesome when on the range, always offering their time and suggestions. It's great having an expert provide solicited advice. The club is also great, they are really making the best out of their space and offering. I do wish that they would hold non-club special events in the event space rather than the lounge, but to be honest, most members are hanging out in the range rather than upstairs in the lounge, so it spends a lot of its time with low occupancy, which is great for members that want to get some work done between range visits. I look forward to trying out their outdoor ranges, they just opened up to members and I hope to try them out soon!

WORTH THE MONEY, GREAT EDUCATION! I bought a Groupon for 1/2 off the H-1 and H-2 Handgun courses…read more.. so far I've only attended H-1 and it was awesome. I went into it knowing almost nothing about handguns (a little about rifles, very little) and left with the comfort of understanding how they work. I can easily walk into a range now and try out different guns without fear or confusion. THESE COURSES NRA CERTIFIED (at least all the levels 1&2). It does say that on the website, but I don't think it's very obvious.. We left with an official NRA instruction book, certificate, patch (yes, like girl- or boy-scouts), and several other pamphlets. We also shot about 25 rounds which is not required for the NRA courses, but as our instructor pointed out, it is much different to try it with real bullets than with blanks and fake-practicing. Well worth it, even on a cold January day. Tedd, the owner and instructor, is a vet with tons of experience. He is direct, helpful, and is not afraid to offer his opinions.. which are interesting to hear. He was patient with an older couple that never touched their gun (but owned it for two years??) and offered tricks and tips for maneuvering switches for my friend because our hands aren't really strong (especially the de-cocker and the slide lock **keywords I learned!) So, if you're unsure, don't know a thing, want revenge on the politicians trying to take away our rights, or simply curious - this is the place to start! I think everyone should take at least the H-1 course before they can say a THING about guns. It really changes your perception when you're in control. Don't be afraid, get educated! ... I'll update after H-2 in March but I imagine it'll be even better and more fun than H-1!

It's a much larger range than I'm used to, which could get really dangerous, but they have a system of lights and intercoms that seems to keep everyone safe. We just shot at the far end-- intended for short-distance pistol firing. The targets are unlike those I've ever seen... you actually have to pick up a 10ft plank of wood and drag it on to the range to your desired distance. I was really glad I had two men with me to help out... I would probably still be there trying to get them to fit into the little wooden slots. There is an indoor range too, which is a nice touch, but I didn't manage to get in there. Note on bathrooms... use the ones you have at home. Outhouse doesn't even begin to describe them.

Three friends and I…read morespent approximately ten hours here one Sunday taking the NRA safety certification course required by MA for gun licensing, and somehow the instructors made it (and by "it" I don't mean just the hands-on shooting range stuff, because of course that part of it isn't dull) something other than dull. Also, when you arrive they cook you a great breakfast complete with coffee that will get you through the morning. For anyone interested in getting any sort of gun license, or in learning more about gun handling, safety, or recreational shooting, Andover Sportsmen Club is the way to go. Do make sure you don't need to refill your car with gas on your way out of North Andover late on a Sunday evening, however, or else you might find yourself at the mercy of your misguided GPS driving through a residential neighborhood, and then rescued by a British couple (bless their hearts) who drive in front of you to guide you back to civilization and, lo and behold, a gas station that, unlike many of the others you've driven by, happens to be open.
