I've taken note of this place a few times before when I've spent time at the nearby Center Court Glendale, but unfortunately, Al's is closed on Sundays so I didn't get to try it... until recently. I happened to be in the area on a Friday this time and walked over for lunch... I had a Greek Chicken Salad with fresh pita that day. It was so good that I went back the next day, on a Saturday. The next day I went for a Gyro Salad and also got my husband a Gyro Pita. Two visits two days in a row! Service was fast and friendly, pricing was very fair, and the food was great too. This place is located on the West side of 59th Ave just North of Bell Rd. There are other photos of the inside and menus with prices. It is fairly small, about 3 booths and some other tables. The day we went they were a little short staffed. They had the one guy taking orders and doing the cooking. Not sure if that is the way it normally is but it did slow things down. If you are taking out, you should probably order ahead before you get there. The food was really good. The gyro and the falafel (see photos) were excellent. I also tried the Philly chicken (see photo) but that was a little bland. I should have gone with the Shawarma. The gyro was definitely worth it. The cilantro jalapeño hummus was a good variation. Got takeout but definitely will be back to dine in - they have a bunch of old photos and Chicago decor on the walls and it smelt AMAZING inside. Love the vibes! The portion of the combo plates is definitely enough for two full meals which I love! Their gyro meat is so flavorful! I wish hummus came with the plate but the small side was around $3 so not bad. The hummus was relatively bland but I think you can order different flavors and we just got the traditional so I will definitely try the other flavor next time! This is menu item #1. For starters, the place is really clean and well kept. The customer service is phenomenal. I've had Gyros all over Glendale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and central Phoenix area; this is by far the best tasting place. You really do get more than you pay for. Most places are either really expensive $14-17 a gyro combo and don't give you a lot of meat. Al's is very generous with their meat portions and for only $11 you get the full combo. The toppings/dressing are on the bottom. The French fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Seriously you need to try it here. read more

Clean, dated interior, tables worn. SALAD WITH CHICKEN had great flavor. the dressing was perfect, too many fried "pita croutons" for me. HUMMUS WITH GRILLED VEGGIES was disappointing. The vegetables were previously frozen and tasted like it. Fresh green pepper and onion, but they overcooked because the frozen stuff had to cook longer and were much larger pieces. The HUMMUS was so smooth and was well presented on the plate. Needed, lemon, garlic, and salt. The SERVICE they took and served my order. I did not see them other then that?? I won't be back. After waiting 12 minutes standing to place my order, I wanted another 15 minutes for my gyro sandwich and fries. I noticed the sliced gyro meat was being kept warm in a metal container and when it was removed with a fork, the meat was dripping wet. This went in the sandwich. The sandwich was not edible. The taste was terrible and ended up going down my garbage disposal when I arrived home. I did eat some of the fries, however they were the greasiest fries I ever remember having in my life. I really wanted to like this place since they described themselves as Chicago style, but being from Chicago, I can tell you this is not true. They even had a picture up with a Chicago Polish sausage on it, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the menu. Sad to say this was not worth the drive or the money. read more

So after not having a gyro since leaving MT, I got to stop at this nice little gyro joint. I ordered a regular gyro and fries and a Dr Pepper. The server was sweet and quiet, but nice and efficient. The dining area was nice and clean. The gyro had a good amount of lamb meat, tzatziki sauce, and white onion loaded on the pita. I was a bit sad not to see any lettuce, but not too bad, that I wouldn't eat this gyro. Oh and the pita was firm yet soft and no breakage. This gyro was absolutely amazing and delicious. Finally a good gyro in Arizona. Most places out here tend to give you half the meat, and for some odd reason, crunchy water. This little place doesn't have the curb appeal to scream eat here. The windows are just covered in photos of their food. Once you walk in, the place was clean. The staff was friendly and food came out at a good pace. The gyro was delicious. The pita was a good size and was slightly warm. The meat came in a good quantity. Seemed like double of what most places give you out here. The sauce was delicious and was the right amount to not be over bearing. A couple slices of tomatoes and onion to top it all off. My only complaint was the meat wasn't completely warm. She had a Chicago gyro combo, which includes fries. Place is nicely decorated, can't go wrong. Very casual... Had a Mexican Coke, always a welcome treat. She had a fountain drink as part of the combo. Fast courteous, And super clean!! Tables were immediately cleaned as they cleared out. Not a single complaint, bill was reasonable. We go about 2X times a year....its in the plaza with Jthe brand new Wendy's, Subway (around the corner from subway) you can see the Bowlero bowling alley out the side window.
