If you're within 50 miles of Streator, get to this restaurant! Forget everything you know about the former restaurant (Buster's) which became pretty bad. Tonight we experienced friendly service, clean new seating, great value, large portions, and homemade taste. I had the smothered chicken. It came with two sides and a dessert. I got it with mashed potatoes and a side salad. Everything was fresh and delicious! The chicken this breast came from must have been nicknamed "Dolly Parton"! Even though it was somewhat crowded, several people stopped to check on us during our visit. They all seemed very sincere. The two of us had smothered chicken, chicken Alfredo, a milk and a soda. Al's Place - Streator , IL Buster's was my go-to restaurant whenever I was in Streator. Homey, gaily decorated for each season, with good mainstream food, a great breakfast buffet, and a friendly and professional staff. Al's - not so much. I went there for 7:30 AM breakfast two weeks ago. No cars in the parking lot, but lights were on inside, so I entered. Before me was a bar with a back bar full of booze bottles. For breakfast?? I looked around the room. No buffet. The distinctive fans and all the seasonal décor had disappeared. Other than that, the layout of the room seemed to be the same. No greeter or seater, so I bellied up to the bar. Two waitresses on duty. One noticed me and I ordered two scrambled eggs, sausage and hash browns. Another man entered and ordered. Two cups of coffee later, our orders arrived. Mine was okay. By the time I finished it, five more people had come in. That's about it. Total time: 45 minutes. Two nights ago I was back in Streator. Went to Al's with Jude, her mom and her sister. Al was the greeter and seater. No smile, all business. A good-sized Saturday night crowd, but the acoustics of the place make normal conversation easy. The menu was fairly extensive and varied, including some Greek stuff like saganaki and a Greek omelet, which my sister-in-law ordered. It was loaded with feta cheese and spinach and looked good. She remarked that her hash browns were remarkably grease-free. I ordered chicken Alfredo, Jude had a huge chicken wrap and her mom had spaghetti marinara. Everyone seemed satisfied with their choices. Mine was fair - a lot of moist chicken breast under the al dente pasta, but the sauce was more like a bechamel white sauce than Alfredo - very little cheese. Attentive but not intrusive waitress, good coffee and a slice of carrot cake for dessert. In sum, three stars - worth a visit. But I miss Buster's. read more

Great spot for pigging out on all my faves. The omelettes are awesome and huge. My fave for dinner is the ribeye steak with loaded baked potatoe. Big portions and friendly service. Always something good for dessert too. Rice pudding and coconut cream pie are delicious!!! Had a problem when the owner delivered to our legally disabled house. The dogs accidentally got out. He was very pissed off and I tried to explain but he walked away quickly. Don't think he recognized me from dine-in. We haven't been back since for fear of him going from nice to nasty! read more

The food for the free Thanksgiving dinner was great. The take out order for the Thanksgiving dinner was not what expected. The portio were a lot sma than eating at Restraunt. More potatoes and gravy. Very small portions of meat and stuff. No cranberry sauce. no veggies with dine in nor take out. The pie square at restaurant was bigger than the take out. (2 -1 inch by 1 inch ) That didn't even make up for what you got at restaurant. I had the free meal there but bought 2 meals to go for 2 neighbors that has no family living or going by. them for the holidays. I understand a free meal is what you get. But if you pay for meals you should get what you pay for. 12-13 dollars for each you should have gotten more. meal in was soup and potatoes with gravy and turkey and stuffing. Went here with my family for first time tonight and hate to say won't be back. First off service was great and very friendly which is why I give it one stars, but potato soup was the most disgusting I've ever had, this wasn't just my opinion everyone at my table thought the same. Chicken noodle soup was horrible as well. Shrimp was over cooked and very chewy with no flavor, green beans mushy and plain. Fries cold and could of been cooked longer. My husbands salad looked as if it had been made last week. Combo platter hot but not very tasty at all. Right after my son ate the veal Parmesan he's had probs with his stomach, he as well said it wasn't good. Needless to say we left alottttt on our plates and came home hungry. Don't know why they put a piece of old lettuce and tomato slice on my plate of garlic shrimp and green beans lol walleye was mushy and batter wasn't good at all. This place is great for what it is, which is a small town American restaurant. We stopped by for breakfast the morning after a wedding and had a wonderful experience. The place is spacious and wasn't super busy when we swung by. The breakfast menu had an extensive array of standard fare, skillets and pancakes and whatnot. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and quick to refill our coffee. The food itself was just fine. I had the meat lover's skillet and it was quite filling as meat lover's skillets tend to be. We come to Streator from the Chicago suburbs to visit my mom and we always enjoy Al's. Good breakfast skillets, good tenderloin sandwiches, great soup. Very bad service! Walked in and was told to wait then a couple cam in behind me and the waitress seated them before helping me! Once i told them i was there for a pick up they advised me that they mixed up my order with a delivery order and i had to wait. Once i got my food it was cold and soggy. Worst experience! read more

This is the 3rd time my family has eaten at Al's and it will be the last. There are not a lot of options in Streator so we decided to give Al's place one more try. Big mistake! The service was terrible and the food was even worse. We ordered the appetizer combo platter...which our waitress failed to order until after our food was brought to the table. She said she forgot to order it. My husband ordered a side salad with his dinner and she forgot to bring that. My daughter ordered the chicken alfredo dinner...it was more like chicken with butter noodles with no flavor. Very disappointing. This year we came to visit my Dad for Thanksgiving. Went to take him to one restaurant because it's familiar. Left because of long wait time and the noise level is quite loud even when it's not packed with people. We decided to go to Al's place after I called and confirmed they were open. We were greeted warmly at the door and immediately seated. The wait staff were all friendly and helpful. We had the Thanksgiving dinner! It was very good! Felt stuffed just like I had eaten at home. Imagine our surprise when we got the bill and were only charged for the drinks. When my boyfriend went up to pay he pointed it out. Al said it was his way of giving back to the community! 3rd time eating here and has to be the worst food I have received to date. The wife had a New York strip steak, she said it was dry and had no flavor at all. I had the burrito supreme which really was terrible. The chicken tasted as though it had been cooked earlier in the day and was warmed up in the microwave, it was so dry and there was absolutely no flavor. In the end we paid. 22.98 for a baked potato, salad, some lettuce, refried beans and some rice. Those were the only edible food this evening.
