I had this place saved in my bookmarks but failed to see that it was a Vegan place LOL. It's a small and cozy cafe in downtown Ho-Ho-Kus and great for an afternoon snack. The woman at the counter was very kind and welcoming. They have a good list of tea and coffee drinks, avocado toasts, and soups. The truffle Mac and cheese was very good! A little gem in the middle of Ho-Ho-Kus. It was such a nice surprise to find this cafe. The moment you walk in you are surrounded by all the amazing smells of the all the fresh food and juices they make. We had homemade iced teas that were delicious and amazing salads. This delightful spot probably ventures deeper into drinks than food, but I enjoyed the MamaJama avocado toast with shallot jam and I'm curious to try their vegan offerings like soy chorizo chili and chickpea tuna. On the beverage side, I liked the Cuban coffee and the black iced tea. Wonder what the chai with beet root is like. Although located in the little town of Ho-Ho-Kus, the interior almost makes you feel like you are sitting in SoHo or in the Meatpacking district. I adore how modern and trendy the inside of the cafe is designed. I especially like the cool lighting and animal portraits. I came here today for an early lunch, so it was very quiet and no one else was in the cafe except myself and my mother. I ordered a "BLT" (their BLTs do not have bacon, instead they have seasoned shiitake mushrooms, with arugula, tomato, and vegan mayonnaise), and my mother ordered the Mango Tango avocado toast. At first I ordered an iced coffee with coconut milk and white chocolate syrup, but I have to be honest their coffee is horrible. I told the cashier/barista that I didn't like the iced coffee and she suggested an iced latte. She was really nice and didn't give me a hard time about not liking the iced coffee at all. She prepared the iced latte for me, this time with oat milk and white chocolate syrup and it was a little better. My mother had a hot cappuccino, which she didn't enjoy. If you can't tell from this review so far, I don't recommend the coffee beverages highly. The food was brought to us fairly quickly and I must say it's pretty spectacular. The mushrooms on the BLT were really really good, and whatever seasoning they use does have a bacon-like taste. They didn't put a lot of mushrooms on the sandwich (felt they could of put more) and it was made on a sub roll, which I thought was a little odd for a BLT, but it was still good. My mother loved her mango avocado toast and we agree it was probably the best value out of everything on the menu. It came with three avocado toasts and a little arugula salad. All of the food tasted very fresh! I would definitely come back to Alt Eats Cafe. I would like to try the other avocado toasts that they have or one of the smoothies from the menu. I also want to make clear this place is not vegan, it is definitely vegetarian. I am neither vegan nor vegetarian, but I think it's important to for those that are vegan to be aware of. When they first opened, I was excited for a new food spot to open within walking distance. The menu is constantly evolving which could be a good thing but it also seems like the staff is always unfamiliar with the ever changing menu. It is also slow service and they are always apologizing for the wait for things that shouldn't take that long to make. It is also overpriced for the portion size but still trying to give new menu items a chance. I want to like this place but its hit or miss for me. I'm also not vegan or vegetarian so it sometimes seems lacking. The photos on Facebook look better than in real life. I've tried some of the desserts (cheesecake, cupcakes, doughnuts, brownie), sandwiches and breads (parmesan arugula, shiitake roll), new empanadas (broccoli), new macs (truffle, buffalo chicken), drinks (matcha latte, cold brew, batido, activated charcoal, dreamsicle, charcoal lemonade). I really loved the activated charcoal drink, latte noir because of the almond syrup but then something happened to it and now its bland and does not taste like almond. The lemonade is ok. I liked the dreamsicle when it was available. Matcha latte had a ton of powder in the bottom and after a certain point it was inedible. Truffle and buffalo macs tasted good but both needed more sauce, they were on the dry side. Some of the desserts can be a bit heavy but you wouldn't know it was vegan. A lot of the items are baked elsewhere and brought in. I liked the broc empanada and parmesan arugula baguette. read more

I appreciate a vegan establishment & had this place on my radar for sometime now but I wish my experience would have been better. The positives: vegan eats like donuts and empanadas and frittatas and Mac and cheese, you get the picture. Good stuff. My fav: the truffle Mac and cheese was solid! Delish The negatives: the staff wasn't familiar with what they were serving. On the menu board it read broccoli empanada. So I order one. When I cut it open it's definitely not broccoli so I let them know and ask what it is. I was told they didn't know. It seems they get them elsewhere and they came labeled broccoli so that's all they could tell me. This was awkward. Other con: the utensils are plastic. Not a fan of that but also there wasn't a knife in the place. I asked for one and was given one they found in the back (real not plastic) but yea not knives in the utensil station. That was weird. Aside from that though it's a cute lil place with vegan eats which is great. The "b"lt was also tasty as well as the avocado toast. It was difficult to eat with my one plastic fork and one metal knife. Have you ever tried eating with that combo of utensils? It's kinda weird. You must be quite mindful of the application of different amount pressure to each hand. Anyway go get their truffle Mac. Delish! read more

I went to Alt Eats Cafe for lunch and got the Avocado Toast with Feta and Tomatoes (slightly different from the normal Avocado Toast). The toast itself was hard and difficult to cut. There was a very generous amount of avocado on the toast along with a couple cherry tomatoes, but nothing else on the toast. There was also some arugula with feta cheese on the side. The taste was just as you'd expect avocado on toast to taste like- nothing special. I probably could've made this toast myself with no cooking experience. For $10 though, this toast was a pretty good deal. The cafe seemed understaffed, as the cashier (who was the daughter of the owner) was also the one making the drinks. As a result, the service speed was slow. The cashier/drink maker/waitress was friendly. Overall, Alt Eats Cafe has decent lunch food (and the drinks looked decent, though I didn't try them). Nothing really stands out about this place, but I'm glad I gave them a shot. read more

Recently came to Alt Eats Cafe two times with two different friends because I am now obsessed! I love this little place in Ho-Ho-Kus! The decor is so cute and cozy and they have a great menu with many offerings for all types of eaters from vegetarian to vegan to gluten-free! My first time I enjoyed their All American avocado toast with a fried egg on top, I swear they gave me an entire avocado too! It was so delicious! My second time I enjoyed the raspberry chia bowl which had fresh raspberries on top and drizzled with chocolate on top of chia pudding which was really good! This cafe holds a 3 because it's cutely decorated, the staff is friendly and courteous, the menu looks awesome and there's ample parking. I SO want to love this place. The truth? Don't get food here. They also aren't eco friendly - plastic knives and cups for stay-in clients. I had the American avocado toast. It was horrible. Not worth the price either. The egg was so over cooked that I couldn't cut it with the knife or even bite it apart. The avocado was not ripe enough to be consumed and the toast was HARD. I came here with a friend for the first time and I would describe the overall experience as... underwhelming. The initial first impression of the restaurant is nice - it has modern, unique decor that makes the place feel like a high-end hipster restaurant in NYC. However, the service was very slow, even though my friend and I were the only customers there (at 10am on a Saturday, which for a brunch place, seems strange). When the food arrived, it was again underwhelming. I got a quinoa buddha bowl and my friend got the vegan mac and cheese, and both dishes tastes just ok. The flavors were on the bland side, and the ingredients didn't seem the freshest. Also, the portion sizes were small given the prices. I stopped my after a yoga class for a latte and I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was great and she answered all my questions. I got a latte, a mini quiche that was definitely better than any non-vegan option- and this super yummy raspberry muffin. The menu had everything from sandwiches, salads, to mac and cheese. As someone who is trying to cut out dairy and be more mindful about what I eat- I am very excited to have stumbled across this cafe and all of their delicious food! After weeks of Instagram stalking I was not let down by Alt Eats. This trendy vegan cafe looks like it was plucked from Brooklyn and plopped into suburban NJ. Fortunately there is substance to match the style. The avocado toast was substantially loaded with avocado and zesty lemon. Luckily the hearty, seedy bread held up to the task. Subbing in beans for the traditional eggs in shakshuka sounds weird but it was executed well. The raspberry chocolate scone was fresh and just the right ratio of dough to stuff. My matcha latte with coconut milk tasted great but it didn't have a pretty design in the foam and wasn't worth a pic so did I really drink it? The only con of my experience was they didn't have a high chair and the small tables were wobbly with our lobster claw one. Something to be aware of for the mommy set. read more

One of my favorite local spots, really love the vibe and decor of Alt Eats. Working in NYC and going to similar restaurants and cafe there, I'm so glad Eric Alt brought a unique and healthy restaurant to Bergen County. The food is delicious! I love all the GF and vegan treats. Their baked goods are my weekly indulgence and I'm not mad about it :) as far as their savory dishes obviously the avo toast is a hit and I love it, but their shakshuka is unreal. I can't wait for the fall to have this more often. One other thing that is a definite must is their coffee. There's a lot of location options for coffee, but their Americano is amazing. Stoped by this place to try there coffee. It is a vegan cafe and I am not well versed on there menu or way of preparing things. I ordered a large caramel macchiato. Got a large cup with half the amount of finished product, no Carmel. I later asked about it but was told they only had caramel syrup!?!? I also tried there blueberry vegan muffing. Honestly, my wife has been asking me to go here since they opened. I'm really happy that she got me there and I will definitely be back. I got the St. Barths salad and it was an excellent salad. All the ingredients were so fresh and delicious. The menu has a lot of fun options for snacks and teas and coffee. The place is really cool and trendy. Great atmosphere and hours. My wife got the cold brew on tap coffee that she loved better than all the chains and the bread pinwheel with shitake and bacon. My wife is going back tomorrow with her girlfriends. I've been following Alt Eats on Instagram for quite a while and finally got to try it today! I ordered the tuna salad with vegan mayo over a salad mix of spinach, arugula and kale. DELICIOUS!!! A bit of vinaigrette was added and the ratio was perfect...not too overpowering, just enough flavor. I also ordered a GF blueberry muffin which was outstanding! Hard to believe it was gluten free! And I couldn't resist the GF chocolate chocolate chip cookies which I ate later in the evening....almost...until my super-picky son (who doesn't eat cookies!...weird I know!) stole my cookie! I really wanted to like this place but it's a very poorly run place that serves frozen bread. Literally STILL FROZEN. I freeze my bread at home and unfreeze it all the time. It's not a difficult task. The Spanish girl at the front counter gave no shits as she proceeded to continue her personal phone call in my face. My new fave lunch spot! Love Alt Eats! The staff is super friendly and accommodating. It's a small cafe but beautifully decorated by Eric Alt and his team. Watching their inspiration and vision come together on IG is fun to see. Their vegan cupcakes are amazing! As are the donuts! Def pre-order if you follow them on IG. The Banh Mi is my fave for lunch and Mexican street corn salad. Went today with my sister, she loved the Tuna on pretzel bread. Basil Lemonade is so refreshing and the iced matcha was great too. read more

Great find! I am always looking for new places to eat near my office and my co-worker introduced me to this place. Everything is fresh, simple and delicious. So far I tried the Tulum toast, Mexican street corn and the avocado toast. All fantastic. The drinks there are amazing. I tried the basil lemonade (my favorite) and the orange dreamsicle (delicious). I also tried Nitro coffee there for the first time and it was great. I am not a usual coffee drinker and never drank coffee black but the nitro coffee was so smooth I drank it black. The only reason I took off a star is because the first time I went the order took over 15 min to come out and it was avocado toast. I think because the place is new they are working out the process. But I have gone to this place twice in a week and today will be my third time. I am taking a couple co-workers. read more
