Though I may prefer their previous location in Northvale which was very cozy, I was happy to see Roots finally reopened in an inviting space with an art space, plants, books, and a stage area. Though not huge, their menu is plant based with an assortment of brunch/lunch items like bowls, salads and interesting sushi, as well as smoothies and other drinks. If you're open to vegan food and uncommon items in a western diet, you'll enjoy it. The pad thai slaw and sushirito were delicious and well made and everything on the menu was inviting. The teas were lovely and I really enjoyed being able to select a blend of herbs for my tea mug. There was some herbal water available, and a selection of desserts on the counter and in the fridge - chocolatey delights like "snickers" bars. We found a corner next to the stage with two armchairs and a coffee table which was the coziest corner to sit and chat. Though it was Friday afternoon at lunch time and there were several other small groups, it never felt crowded and we were able to stay for a few hours enjoying our tea and meal. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, and non-intrusive. You order at the counter and then sit down, and we were not disturbed at all besides our meal being brought to us when it was ready. Cute hipster vegan cafe with tasty food and drinks. However, the service is regrettably subpar. We were there for an hour for a simple to-go order. When we inquired about the delay after thirty minutes, we realized they forgot our order. The food and drinks were good enough that we were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt of an off day and came back a second time. They didn't forget any orders the second time, but again the service was incredibly slow. I would only go here if you have nothing else planned for the next 2-3 hours. read more

So glad they're back! The other day we stopped in for lunch at the new location in Closter NJ. We had the lentil and chili soups--with peanut butter cups and cheesecake! Everything is vegan--I love it because for me it's less to worry about. Ambiance is comfortable, very similar to how they setup the dining room in their old location--which was earthy and homey. This location has an addition of an art room! For art days--appeared to be an area where adults and children can create art. I didn't venture in. Animals are welcome, some patrons had their dogs. Service was great. The cashier charged us for something we did not order and promptly sent a refund. They didn't have the salads and burritos from the previous menu but the owner told me that the menu items will eventually return. Will definitely come back! read more

Friendly staff and the cafe has a quirky interior, their entire menu is vegan. We tried the Trio Timeless Tacos and the Mediterranean quinoa bowl. The Trio Timeless Tacos tasted good, we got one of each, they were so light and healthy, each tasted unique in their own sense. When we walked through the parking lot, we were amazed to find such an open outdoor seating area. Perfect for summers and cool fall days. Inside, the decor is fun and warm. The staff were so friendly and made some great recommendations for food and drinks. We ordered quinoa bowl, a classic pizza, the tropical smoothie and a lavender blues smoothie. Everything was fresh and delicious. The meal was so satisfying. We felt full but not weighed down. The cafe also has the sweetest mascot, Riley. Everyone seemed to know her! I'm a meats and potatoes kind of guy, so when a friend of mine suggested meeting up here for dinner, I initially declined, but then told him that I don't mind tagging along, I would just eat ahead of time. That was a big mistake, as this is one of the coolest restaurants I've ever been to, and not at all what I expected. The décor and vibe is hard to describe; I would pick glamping as the best one word description. The food was beautifully plated, and the part of the dinner that was shared with me was delicious. It was hard to believe that it was raw and vegan! There was a long list of delicious sounds smoothies, shakes, and drinks, in addition to all of the appetizers and entrees. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I got the reishi pnut cup and the lavender blues. So good! I could only finish less than half of each of the small. The only thing I might change is have the plantain chips came on top of or on the side when you order Togo (easy fix). Consistently inconsistent. It's a very hit or miss experience depending on the day and who is preparing your food/beverages. Also, I'm very confused by their use of honey... when I asked about it I was told since they use honey, they NOW consider themselves plant based rather than vegan. Very unprofessional and rude when I asked questions about what to try as I said I don't usually eat this cuisine and was interested in educating myself. Her service and behavior was entitled towards me making me feel unwelcomed as a new customer which is a shame. If your message is holistic and healthy then don't hire toxic people. Would come back if the employment was different.
