I am an older woman, disabled with a paralyzed leg and I use a cane. I went in for some knee X-rays and had the AWFUL misfortune to get an older man named "Ken," as my technician. I told him five times that my leg was paralyzed and not once did he acknowledge that I had spoken. What planet is this man from? When someone has a disability, ESPECIALLY in healthcare, you say you're sorry to hear that, and ask how you can help them. At one point, I couldn't get my leg into the position needed, (because it's paralyzed) and he actually YELLED AT ME!!! I haven't been screamed at like that in years. It was appalling. I was shaking all over. I reported the incident to the young gal at the X-ray desk, who was very nice, and she was shocked. The three people in the waiting room were all men and they were scandalized to hear that a disabled lady with paralysis had been yelled at. The nice desk girl gave me his supervisor's name: Jean Mufty. I called her and at first she defended him, saying he had a hearing problem. I said this was nothing to do with hearing loss. Then, she switched tacks and apologized. But she never once asked for my phone number so she didn't care enough to report back to me. In fact she she kept saying that he wasn't normally at this location as though that made a difference! As a disabled person, I am APPALLED that Alta Bates/Summit would employ such a man. What if I had depression or was fighting cancer? His yelling at me might have put me over the edge! HOW can a healthcare company employ such a person and HOW can he be allowed to talk to a disabled patient this way? There is a large cardboard sign when you first walk into the imaging center that says "please do not complain to the office staff." That is your first hint that this is going to be an unpleasant experience. The front office staff wouldn't accept images from another hospital, told someone who came in person that they needed to call first before coming in person, told a third there insurance wouldn't work, and told another person that needed to hurry up and fill out the form.The facility should hire some more polite people to help with customer service instead of just putting up a large cardboard sign. read more

The front desk staff at this office is exceptionally unprofessional. Arrived for an evening appointment and the lady at the front desk greeted my husband with a big, apparently fake, smile. I say 'fake' because after my husband had been shown to his appointment, I then overheard her -- behind the pane of shower glass that separates reception from the waiting area -- complaining loudly to the tech about how he (husband) had corrected her mispronouncing his name. She was actually repeating the conversation beat for beat in a derogatory way, as if my husband had done something to offend her. My husband's name is very common in Spanish and he had corrected her very nicely and politely, simply wanting to avoid any misunderstanding about who he was. This is borderline discriminatory, and also obviously creates an unpleasant and hostile ambiance for staff and for patients who overheard. This happened after we had already heard her and the other staff talking loudly about a number of other unprofessional, non-work-related issues that should not be overheard by patients waiting to receive medical procedures and information. read more

Unfortunately that excitement was quickly taken away by a technician who was not informative, welcoming, and caring. We came in for an ultra sound and expected so much information and great news but we received a here's your image, take care, doctor will reach out. For at least fifteen years the thumb joint on both hands give me discomfort with everyday activities that use the thumb, such as getting dressed, writing, opening jars, or pinching, and grasping objects. Even using a pen to write hurts me now. I saw Dr. Harold Jackson, who ordered x-ray for diagnosis. With the picture, he hopes to pinpoint the severity of the arthritis and exact location was causing me to having pain. The imaging center opens at 7:00 am and I'm a walk in. I called ahead to check if they are available at the lunch hour and how busy they might be. A great receptionist answered said they are open all day and to come on in! read more

Office Experience: the technicians conducting the actual imaging for mammograms/ultrasounds were great. But the front office staff are unprofessional, rude, and extremely dismissive of clients. One woman with the initials L.D. is particularly unfriendly and impatient, I watched and her heard her condescend to a few elderly patients while I was waiting for my appointment. L.D. was also terrible to me and tried to force me to provide consent to release my medical records from another facility (which were already requested but had not arrived) and implied I couldn't get my imaging done without them, and refused to provide an explanation why. Then became angry with me when I explained that was not legally required to obtain health services there. For the entire hour I was waiting in the waiting area, the office staff sitting behind the counter proceeded to sit and complain about patients out loud for everyone to hear, complained and made fun of patients who phoned in, and even shouted instructions across the waiting room, embarrassing patients and exposing private health issues. At one point the female security guard came into the waiting area from outside and ordered a woman around, contradicting the instructions of the office staff and they did nothing. I watched the woman get completely confused and embarrassed over this when all she wanted was some water, and the office staff then lectured her on not following instructions and talking about her bladder and obvious ultrasound she was having in front of the entire room! There are several other places around the Bay Area that provide these medical services where the staff remember what HIPAA compliance and medical record privacy is, how to practice empathy and behave professionally. Beware of this facility, avoid it if you can. read more

I'm writing this review because there was a major confusion with my scheduled ultrasound appointment. When I left my previous appointment on the doctor informed me that I needed to come back within 3 weeks and asked that I schedule an appointment at the front desk prior to leaving, which I did. The receptionist asked me if I would be coming back for the 'same thing' perhaps because I had been to the office for an ultra sounds so many times throughout the pregnancy already. However, when I arrived at the office at 10 o'clock (appointment was at 10:10) and didn't receive a call telling me that could come in, I went through the security protocol to be seen. The security guard asked if I had gotten a call from the office instructing me to come in which I found odd because he had never asked me before, yet opted to ask when my African-American partner was with me. When I indicated that I hadn't he told me that they would just tell me to go back to the car and wait and wouldn't allow us to move forward. Since, it was now 10:20 and I hadn't received a call, I reached out to (415) 600-6400 and was told that my appointment was actually scheduled for 10:20 and a medical assistant would call me. At 10:30 when I still didn't receive a call, I called 510-204-1880 and spoke to a brash woman who told me that 'as opposed to waiting for the office to call me when I arrive, I need to initiate the call' then proceeded to say that I had the incorrect department and that she would transfer me. When that failed, I called 510-570-3535 and spoke with someone who said that she didn't see a scheduled appointment for me and that they don't schedule appointments for 10:20 only 10:10. When I told her that my appointment was at 10:10 yet someone else mentioned 10:20 and asked when I would be seen she said she would have her manager contact me because they didn't have me on the schedule. The manager (Anita?) called and offered a half-hearted apology, said that she couldn't find an appointment for me and perhaps I was confused because I needed to come at 28 weeks as opposed to 26, then proceeded to say that she 'understands that everyone is busy and it's hard to get away for appointments'. I found this to be dismissive and thoughtless, considering that both my partner and I had to take unpaid time off of work to go to the appointment only to be met with confusion, finger pointing of misinformation on our part and 0 effort to resolve the issue. If I was supposed to come at 28 weeks there still hasn't been an appointment scheduled and I can't afford to keep leaving work, unpaid with the uncertainty of an appointment. Instead of apologizing for her inept staff, what the manager inadvertently mentioned is that the doctor failed to submit an authorization request for the appointment. My assumption is that they canceled the appointment on their end yet no one notified me which created this confusion. Be sure to triple-check and confirm appointments prior to making the trek. read more

Went here for a mammogram. Very relieved it wasn't my first experience. The procedure was not explained. My breasts were not examined. I was not told how or when I'd get results. After two weeks, I called to see whether my doctor's office had received results. Nothing. So, I called the facility directly. Turns out my results were "on hold" because they were waiting for previous exams. "Could I find out now the results of my latest test," I asked. "No. We need to give the old facility 21 days to send us old results." "Wait. I need to wait three weeks to find out if you saw anything unusual on my mammogram?" "Oh, no. If there was something unusual, the technician would've told you or we would've called you." Really? And how exactly should I have known that? While I'm relieved the test revealed nothing and while I understand folks at this facility deal with hundreds of mammograms each week, I only get one once a year. It would be really nice to know what to expect, to receive clear communication and and to be provided results in a timely fashion. read more

If I could give this place a negative star, I would! My husband needed to get an MRI and was referred by his physical therapist. 1-The lady scheduling the appointment is inept. She was rude and didn't know any answers to my questions such as insurance code? In Network? 2- She let my husband know that the appointment will take only 1 hour. We scheduled it for 11 am. Her exact words were "you'll be done by 12:15 latest." We got the the place at 10:30 am to fill out paperwork. Front desk lady told us that they'll call my husband in 30 mins. Nope! 11:20 am is when he was actually called. Mind you, there was only 1 other patient there! One! 3- Was he done in 1 hour like the woman said? Nope! He was done at 1 pm! That was almost 2 hours. I rather drive a little further to a different MRI place for better service. Never ever will I come back here. read more

I have three breast MRI the last two months and Alta Bates is one of the best I experienced. I was in the MRI machine for two hours long, they have made me very comfortable and found my tumor which nobody can. Office might not look the best but their services and technical skills are superb! This review is for the Mammography Center on Telegraph. The front desk person was fine but the technician was inept. Most important, they have antiquated technology!!! First, the technician. During the procedure she's talking to herself, asking "how do I do this again". Wow. While my breast is squished she's trying to remember how to position my arm...Later, I ask when I should expect the results and she doesn't know...another strike. Second, the equipment. I get the results back and I need further imaging. I'm referred to a different location at 3100 Summit/Sutter Health. I learn that the Telegraph facility doesn't have the proper equipment. If there's any abnormality people are sent to 3100 Sutter. They have 3D digital imaging which allows the doctor to see more. A "shadow"/"asymmetry" that ends up being more breast tissue on the right than left is diagnosed easily by an onsite doctor (and if there's an issue they immediately ask for more images). In retrospect, I could have gone there - had one appointment, asked for 3D tomosynthesis and been with a competent, efficient technician (thank you, Ebony!). Also, thanks Dr. Wong for answering my questions. After calling my insurance, I realized 3D imaging is recommended and is covered for the initial visit. Why did I waste my time (and discomfort and even more radiation) at this antiquated, ineffective place??? Now I know better. read more

Be careful when you go to this clinic, my Doctor referred me to get an HSG test, when I called to schedule the appointment I specified what test I needed to get done then they verified with the referral they got for my doctor, HSG is a very time sensitive test so it needs to be done on an specific day of your cycle, I go to my appointment they checked me in and they verified again the referral and consent forms then They take me into the room and once I am there ready to get my test done they asked me to sign another consent form, then after the test was done I found out they did the WRONG test! Instead of getting a HSG they did a SHG, after I realized the mistake I told them why and the answer that I got was: "Oh, we don't do HSG test here that gets done at a Hospital " ???? It's at 5730 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, CA (510) 204-1880. .....I am very happy with the thorough professionalism of the several staff I encountered, mainly with Trish, the Ultrasonographer. She proceeded through her routine methodically and deliberately, making adjustments and saving data into her ultrasound machine. She even used warm ultrasound jelly! And she explained the highly technical questions I asked her. .....There were also Tenika and Gerardo at the reception desks and Alex the X-ray technician who also answered technical questions. And I also appreciate Geoffre in the Medical Records File Room who very courteously and professionally made copies of the tests for me. I am a 73 year old scientist and have been studying anti-aging medicine for 18 years, and I like to be an informed patient. .....I am very happy with the physical organization of the Center, and with the large convenient parking lot, and with the thoroughly professional, knowledgeable and courteous staff. I would give Alta Bates 3 stars but the following review which I posted for the 3rd party that reads the actual x-rays received 1 star so I'm being generous and providing 2 stars here. The people during the x-ray itself were nice enough, sort of friendly and almost smiled. But the wait was long and non-responsive. The trouble is with the billing from the 3rd party. Just rubs me the wrong way. From my other review of Bay Imaging Consultants: Yes, this is one of those cases where I'd give 0 stars if I could. And the trouble here is that it's not for the services that they provided but rather the lack of visibility before and during the service but rather for the bill that arrived after. One of the previous reviews suggested that maybe it was a scam so I called the office where we had our son's x-rays taken. It turns out that Alta Bates has outsourced the reading of the actual x-ray to a radiologist group. That group in turn bills separately for their services unbeknownst to the patient. And this is why the single star. When I went into Alta Bates, I did not expect them to send the x-rays to someone else. But 3 months later, a bill arrives for a grand total of $5.76 for services completed 3 months before, and yes it seems to be a scam so I called to confirm. No prior warning, no indication that a bill from a completely unrelated organization would arrive at some future date. Just another medical services provider cutting their own costs by outsourcing to a cheaper alternative which in turn bills my insurance company and then me for the difference. $5.76. And sadly, there's nothing we can do but pay the bill and hope we don't need x-ray's any time soon. read more

I give 5 stars to the staff at Alta Bates Imaging & Mammography Center. I was extremely pleased with my visit to the X-ray Deparment. Kudos to Terri & Lisa, who processed my paperwork. Terri, tirelessly and patiently, helped solve my problem of the missing forms necessary in acquiring my x-rays. Rather than dismiss me with the suggestion that I go back to doctor's office, get a copy and come back another day, She took the time to suggest what I should do. Lisa took up the slack when I had the doctor's office fax the forms. I got my x-ray! I , then, walked down the hall to get a mammogram. Went like clockwork. Before I knew it, it was over. Jovita, the technologist, was proficient and personable. I left feeling that I had been well taking care of by the staff at Alta Bates Imaging Center. read more

This imaging center seems to use radiologists that aren't especially competent. I've had two imaging studies read incorrectly, leading to further, more expensive tests. Much more expensive. If this happened in any other industry, I'd receive an apology and the charge would be removed. Not here. You are wrong, they are right, and there is no way to ask for a review of their procedures. I'm reporting them to the Department of Corporations and the State insurance commissioner. This seems like fraud to me. While those wheels are turning, I'm taking my business elsewhere - in addition to being impenetrable and incompetent, they charge the highest prices in the Bay Area. read more
