We needed a vet for our new kitties and this place was recommended by several neighbors. I called Monday morning and the man that answered said they didn't have any appointments but he could take my information down and call back if anything opened up, so I did that. I didn't have high hopes given the reviews on here, but just a few hours later I got a call back from them with an appointment available for the same week! I was really impressed when I went in. They are an all cat vet so the kitties don't get scared by any other animals, and everything is set up just for cats. Because of covid their waiting room isn't open and you have to call when you get there. I answered a detailed history of the kitties over the phone and then one of the vets came out and helped me carry them inside. Both vets were so gentle with the kitties and explained every single thing they were examining and why, and what they found. We needed pills given and the vets did it like a breeze, giving me pointers at the same time which was super helpful. My kittens handled their first vet appointment really well and I think it was because of how great the vets were. The prices were very affordable too, and the new kitten exams were complimentary. I'm so happy that this place was recommended to me, I feel like our new kittens are in great hands. read more

When our brand new kittens became super ill, Altamont Cat Hospital was recommended to us from a friend. We've had 3 appts between 2 sick kittens in 2 weeks and I've been so please and happy with the quality of care we and our kitties have received. They have gone above and beyond what I have ever received from a veterinarians offices. Daily phone calls to check on them, lots of tips, advise and explaining and the icing on the cake...dropping off special food to our home for the kitties when we couldn't make it by during office hours. Over the years, Dr. Melissa Mathews and her staff have given our cats expert, loving care, always going the extra mile to follow up with phone calls and taking a personal interest in each animal. When we were contemplating installing a cat fence to keep our roaming pets in the yard, Dr. Mathews even came over to our house to give us her personal recommendations. I just called to make an appointment for my cat who would've been a new patient. I first asked if it was possible to have a phone consult, but when I was told that wasn't accepted for new patients, I then tried to schedule an appointment. I was put on hold for another call in the middle of a sentence trying to book an appointment and then when I was allowed to continue my phone call, the receptionist clearly wasn't listening to me because he advised I go somewhere else as it sounded like an emergency... which it wasn't. He also wasn't able to give me an initial price of what a first time wellness appointment will cost which was very odd, since every other vet in the area has been able to tell me that. He just continued to say that he couldn't get me in and I still wasn't even given ANY appointment dates or times. Then I was cut off again mid sentence and the call was ended because he had to go help the vet and he was still not able to book me first which would've taken 5 minutes. This review is not for Dr. Mathews, as I hear she is wonderful and I was referred to her through my pet sitter, but she will not be getting my business because of this odd and poorly managed experience. The staff was so friendly and knowledgable. It quickly became clear that they really care about your cat and want to make sure they have a comprehensive understanding of their lifestyle, diet, and medical history. I really appreciate the kind tone and care shown by the person I spoke with at the front desk who came out and got my kitten from the car (this is during COVID so curbside is mandatory). I also greatly appreciate that Dr. Matthews took the time to carefully explain everything about my kitten's current health and things I can do to ensure he has good health in the future, including referencing scientific studies that support her claims. The first kitten appointment was free and they even added nail trimming for free. I look forward to bringing my kitten here in the future. Also, I appreciate that they collaborate with SAGE in Dublin. My kitten had an upper respiratory infection a couple of weeks ago and it was during the weekend. SAGE shared the medical records and treatment with Altamont Cat Hospital, making integration between these places so easy. read more

I do Not recommend this vet. First, this vet was abusive to her workers. It was very uncomfortable, and I felt very sorry for them. Second, she didn't know enough about cat urinary bladder inflammation than my new vet. She recommended antibiotics each time even though my cat didn't have an infection - extra cost and bad for her immune system when she didn't need them. My new vet explained everything thoroughly, and did NOT recommend antibiotics. This was not once but twice. Then, the third time my cat had problems, even though I called a couple days before the end of the week, they told me they couldn't fit her in. They have very limited hours. They suggested I go to an emergency vet, but I just went to Adobe because they're open late and on weekends - plus they turned out to be awesome. read more

If you've never gone to a cat specialist, it is very different from the care we've received at various "dog vets" over the years. Dr Matthews and her entire staff are just wonderful. I have "problem" kitties, one had diabetes, recurring pancreatitis, constipation, weight loss, food aggression, all of the things. The other kitty is older-than-dirt, has lung cancer, kidney failure, "the worst" arthritis, and most recently cystitis. Dr Matthews has not only kept my babies alive, but they are HAPPY and comfortable, and I am not thousands and thousands of dollars in debt. The appointment was seamless, especially now with Covid precautions. Everyone I spoke with was personable, kind, and knowledgeable. I found this place odd and I don't think they want your business so I don't recommend them. I called and left a VM. No one called me back. so then I had to call back again in the afternoon. You would think they want your business for a new client/patient. Then when I was transferred to a different person to make an appointment. While I was in the middle of making an appointment I was put on hold multiple times-- the person sounded like she had to tend to another activity. This place seems like they don't have enough staff or personnel to take care of a businesss. Third- I asked for an afternoon appointment. they said my appointment was too long and the doctor would only see me for a morning appointment. I asked what a too long appointment means. I was not given a clear explanation for what and why the doctor could not accommodate my request for an afternoon appointment- basically any day after a particular date. It seemed very odd. Then I said fine i'll just come in at the very last morning appointment available. We started looking for a date, but then the person on the phone had to be called away again, and I was told I would be called back. Then the next day I had already send a whole scanned file of PDF and emailed it to the office and they still hadn't called me back to this date or emailed me back. So I'm posting. I'm annoyed and frustrated and I think it's terrible service. So don't take your cat here. read more

We just recently moved out of Livermore, but I still sent a Christmas card to Dr. Mathews and the staff this year. They've been a big part of our lives in helping us take care of our two beloved cats for the past three years. They've always made an concerted effort to fit us in when things go wrong with our cats ("can you come in around 10:30?"), and it's obvious they really love felines. **And for people looking to get kittens fixed, she does what's called a "keyhole incision". Smaller opening, less traumatic on the kitten, and no big area to chew on afterward - it was a no brainer for us. My kittens were fairly normal by the end of the day, and they put microchips in their shoulders at the same time (which has helped when they've wandered away). It was slightly more expensive than the other couple vets I'd called, but it was REALLY worth it, since I have friends whose pets got infections by chewing on themselves after surgery. We plan on going back once in a while to get flea meds for them, and keeping in touch with her so that we can take the cats there again when we move back (hopefully). I absolutely love this place. I just recently got a kitten and Dr M was super informative and knew so much about the kitten and what I need to do to keep my baby healthy and happy. The visit went very well and I made a follow up for two weeks after. They didn't even charge me for my first visit!! :D The nice man that worked there helped me to my car and was very informative with the invoice as well as the medication I was given. Then over the weekend the kitten started to vomit (as it was very hot) and I was sick with worry. I emailed DrM and she responded so quickly and told me what I should do. A day later the kitten is no longer vomiting and is back to her normal self. For as long as Altamont Cat Hospital is there I will be bringing all three of my cats here. Highly recommend!!! Doctor Matthews and her staff at Altamont Cat Hospital cared for our cat Tommy for most of his life and her diagnoses of his health issues were always correct as he aged. Recently we had to put Tommy down after 17 years due to a quality of life issue as a result of a major illness. Doctors Matthews handled this distressing situation in a manner that brought comfort to my wife and as we grieved our loss. Our adult children were very upset and Doctor Matthews without any hesitation agreed to get paw print impressions in clay for their memorial. Although we have decided not to get another cat, if we were to get another one Doctor Matthews would be our vet! read more

I couldn't reccommend a better place! The Vet genuinely cares for cats and I have her to thank for saving my cat. I had taken my cat into another place who said his spine was broken (my cat couldn't walk). My intuition told me to come to Altamont Cat Hospital. I brought my kitty in and the Vet needed minimal tests and was able to determine what was wrong and show me how to treat him at home. Turns out my cat was diabetic, he went from Not walking, to playing and getting into his shananigans within 3 days. They also helped me resolve his runny stool which is another issue entirely. You would think that a clinic that specializes in cats would have greater knowledge when diagnosing a cat. I did not find this to be true. The vet actually suggested my cat could have swine flu. The lady receptionist was horribly rude and cold as ice. The only nice person working here was a male assistant who carried my cat out to the car for me. BAD energy in this place. I always recommend meeting the vet and staff to get a feel for whatever clinic you choose. If you get negative vibes choose another place. I met Dr. Matthews today under unfortunate circumstances. I saw a small kitten trying to cross the road on Vasco this morning and pulled over immediately to try to get it out of the road. Within a minute and by the time I got to it the kitten had already been hit. The kitten was still alive when I got to it so I picked it up and ran to Altamont Cat Hospital which just so happened to be across the street. Dr. Matthews took the kitten from me and told me that she was gone. Being the huge cat lover that I am, I immediately started sobbing, she came out to console me and gave me a hug. She showed a huge amount of compassion towards me and also to the kitten, both complete strangers to her. The yelp reviews about how wonderful she is didn't surprise me and I will definitely be bringing my own cats to see her in the future. read more

Wow, I can't believe I haven't written a review for Dr. Matthews' practice. We moved from Canada four and a half years ago and have two high maintenance cats (health-wise). We were overjoyed at finding a cat hospital close to home and have brought our boys to her for their various scraps and shots since 2006. If I could give a five plus rating to the service of Dr. Matthews I would. We have several friends who go to this hospital for their cat needs and all love her. She is thorough, open to questions, up to date on the latest tests/drugs/procedures and is available if needed by email and will call you with test results even after she is closed to discuss at length the results. Her love for cats is very evident, from actively finding homes for abandoned cats to caring for ailing cats outside of her hospital. I feel guilty for not writing a review for Dr. Matthews and staff. You should know that I used to live in Dublin and took my kitty to the Feline Hospital on Santa Rita. I found out through a friend that it had been taken over by Bishop Ranch. OhhhhhhhhNooooooo! Having had prior serious issues with them I knew that the care at Feline would not have my confidence. Not knowing where to go, I called Sage Hospital in Dublin. It is essentially for ICU and Level 1 Trauma care for animals. They were excellent, sensitive and I would trust their referral no matter where it was. Luckily, they recommended Altamont so off I went. I had inherited 4 beautiful kitties because I just can't say no (even though my landlord said no pets). They weren't pets. They are family. Anyway, I had to bring them in 2 at a time and the person that had "found" me had to help as I had a broken arm. One of the kitties had huge dredlocks, fleas, but thankfully nothing else. The other had fleas and both were anemic due to the fleas. Dr. Mathews was obviously very experienced and up front about everything. I thought she was great. Her assistant, a young blond girl, (sorry, I'm old and you're not the only one) who gave Princess a military hair cut and cared for her like she was her own. BugBug, just rated a flea treatment but she was treated so sweetly and so expertly. I ran the flea gauntlet, treating 4 kitties, vacuuming, vacuuming, and more vacuuming, changing bed every day and washing with Clorox. Vacuuming, bought a new vacuum, vacuuming, Getting floors cleaned, then treated. Who knows if they are completely gone. However, it is time for kitty check again. They have grown a bit now. When Dr. Matthews told me to change their food to one with more protein, I asked which one? She was great and didn't try to upcharge me to really expensive food. My friend who "adopted me to the kitties" is a jockey and works intensively with the vets at the tracks and trainers. I believe she knows a great vet when she sees one. She thought this was an honest, experienced, kind vet. The staff was great. I would recommend Altamont to anyone looking for a no nonsense kitty vet. read more

As the owner of a cat grooming business in Livermore, I hear what people think about local veterinarians and no one has a better reputation for feline medical care than Dr. Mathews. I have many clients who credit her with saving their cats' lives including a few who went to her for a second opinion after their cat was failing under the care of another veterinarian. I've taken my own cats to Altamont Cat Hospital for over 15 years. Dr. Mathews has correctly diagnosed some very difficult cases with our cats including a rare auto-immune disorder that even UC Davis initially misdiagnosed. Her office is quiet (no barking dogs) and you never feel hurried. Dr. Mathews always takes time to explain everything and to discuss any and all concerns. I think that most veterinarians are really dog doctors since that's where most the business is. Dr. Mathews is the only cat specialist in Livermore and I can't recommend her highly enough. I would not bring my kitties anyplace other than th Dr. Mathews. She is very patient and understanding to our kittes and to me. She takes her time to explain details and answer all my questions. She know that our kitties are not just pets. They are family and her "bedside" manners are far better than a lot of pediatricians I dealt with when my kids were little. She helped me save the life of our wonderful Woody who was abandoned (found under a deck) and left sick with pnumonia and a severe eye infection at only 6 days old.
