Very surprised by how unfriendly staff are. Lead times are insanely long and very expensive. Plus the last 3 items I've brought in they weren't able to do (including taking in a long skirt at the waist, which didn't seem too complicated). So also very limited in what they will do. I came here to get the straps of a dress hemmed, charged me 80$ and it looks like i could have hemmed them myself. It was a rushed order, but it was still about one week away. This used to be a great place to go, but lately the owner is very unpleasant, impatient, and unwilling to work with customers. I brought multiple sweaters here over the years to get patches put on. They used to supply the patch and everything, for only about $35. But now it is apparently a huge hassle. She told me to go buy my own patches and when I brought them in she told me that it was not their specialty, and they normally send it to a tailor. So I asked who they send it to, and she said she didn't have any recommendations. She told me to go ask at a shoe repair place. What?!?! I will never get alterations again from a place with such rude customer service. read more

I've done business with Alterations To Go for over 20 years...when they first opened their work, quality, and service levels could not be matched. Unfortunately, now they have none of that as their core business or customer service. Yes, they are outrageously overpriced, but if their work was good and delivered on time, I would support them. Sady, that is not the case. The last two times I have been there, the owner promised the alterations on a date written on the tag and when I went to pick it up, she said my items had been 'misplaced' - both times. She called later in the day to say they 'found them'...so I had to make another trip to pick them up with no apology or acknowledgement. Today, I had my last awful experience with ATG. The owner gave me a shockingly ridiculous price to hem a dress and repair a shoulder strap. When I decided against hemming the dress because of the price, she raised the price of the strap adjustment from her verbal quote and charged me a 20% 'fast fee' for asking to pick-up the strap alteration in a week's time. When I told her I would not need the work done, she walked away and into the back leaving me at the counter. I've heard the same stories from so many others who no longer use ATG after being treated badly, having prices change from verbal quotes to what gets written on the tag, or having their alterations 'go missing' when they are not ready on time. I am sad to see this long-time business evolve to this way of operating. It used to be a pleasure to deal with them. read more

Ruined my jacket, without any solution offered. The service was already on delay a day. No problem. I walked in next day at noon and still had to wait for the external service they use. It seems the clothes get tailored outsourced for a low price and return to be charged approx. $40. Unfortunately, the seam of the back of the jacket was not aligning anymore with the sleeve and on the right side the fabric was drawn together due to too tight sewing. Obviously very bad work done. I asked politely for a correction. The woman walked away with my jacket and returned with an open seam saying that I don't have to pay for the bad work. Worst case scenario as she roughly opened the seam half the sleeve side and retuned it to me without any attempt of help. The sleeves were two thumps wide open before. Now they ruined the sleeves and they will come off totally. It took a while to get John, the manager, on the phone who simply told me: Califormia's law allows him to offer no correction and I could do nothing. I should go somewhere else. I've now gone twice to pick up my items and was told they were not ready and asked me to wait 20-30 minutes. Was overcharged for alterations to my daughters bridesmaids dress. When she went to wear it for the wedding the work was not done. It was very stressful having to find and try to sew the straps up so her breasts weren't exposed and it wasn't dragging on the floor. When I went back to get a refund for work not done the owner argued with me about their "policy". Bottom line the work was not done and I should have received a full refund. But most of all I should've listened to the prior terrible reviews of this place! read more

Pretty disappointed in this experience. All I needed done was get a few inches hemmed on a tulle gown and was left with completely hacked lines. The whole reason why I took this to get professionally done was to avoid this, I may as well have taken scissors to it myself. I have a seamstress that I use regularly, however, the last time I used her I felt the price was a little high. So I thought I'd give Alterations-to-Go in Bon Air a try. I had them do the same thing (a simple hemming of one curtain panel). When I arrived to pick up the panel, the price was $32 (compared to my usual person at $20) and the panel was wrinkled and clearly not pressed (which my usual seamstress always steam presses anything she gives to me). In addition, the panel was about an inch shorter than I had asked for. I'm happy to say that I will gladly go back to my usual seamstress who I now see takes very good care of my items. I will not go to Alterations to Go, as they are more expensive AND they do not do quality work, or steam press items before giving them to clients. read more

Expensive and several times things have not been ready when promised - one of them was for a wedding and I had to have it. Just recently, needed something for a holiday party and 5 days after promised date, still not ready. There was a lame excuse about it needing to be hand sewn - not true. read more

I have been altering things here for 4/5 years. Almost all of my items were straightforward hems and letting in/out and some occasional complicated work. I always trusted the work would be done right. And it was ... usually. But their antiquated and confusing system of paper claim tickets became unbearable. Then it got worse. Pricing suddenly started to fluctuate. A normal hem doubled and then another seam "let out" doubled and became "complicated". I came last week to have a pair of lined silk pants "let out" and she quoted $60! I went elsewhere and am having them done for $25! You not only lost a customer you inherited this bad review. You should have given pause to remember long term customers are gold to businesses ~ but your ridiculous and capricious response was your demise. Just because you are in Marin and need to make your expensive rent, doesn't mean I am responsible to pay for it with your outlandish pricing and surly attitude! read more

They've been great on jobs large and small. My most recent visit I took in a reversible wool blanket coat that moths had started to make mincemeat of. I love this coat and didn't want to lose it. So I took it in. They do "invisible reweaving" and when they say invisible, they mean it. They gave me a quote which was reasonable but the amount of work they had to do. I picked up the coat and couldn't believe it--I could not see how they'd fixed it, it just looked right. Now--this is a major accomplishment because 1) the coat is reversible, 2) the bottoms of the pockets had been eaten, so they basically had to reconstruct them, and 3) there are fields of solid color where fixed might be evident, but they weren't. They saved my favorite coat and did it PERFECTLY. Thank you! read more

I have some vintage Levi jeans with tears in the behind and needed someone to fix them, so I came here on a recommendation from a friend. My friend said they brought in their jeans for the same reason and that this place does an amazing job. When I saw the results, I couldn't even believe it!! It turned out better than I ever could've imagined in my wildest dreams. And Snow was so, so kind. The first time I ever came in, I was running late due to unusual traffic and I called to say I would be there a couple minutes after closing and she was completely understanding and stayed open until I got there. I've had several jobs handled by this shop so far, and both of the women I've met there have been super-helpful and friendly. Sometimes they are so busy that you have to wait a few minutes, but I'm amazed that they handle all the work that they do. Folks work extra hours, sometimes make arrangements so you can pick things up on Sunday when they are closed...honestly, I think they bend over backwards to help their customers. This place definitely deserves ZERO stars. The woman who works there is so f-ing rude, it's UNBELIEVABLE. I needed a pair of jeans altered, it's close to my house, so I went there. Upon walking in, there was a woman standing there and she didn't greet or acknowlege me. I asked the woman how much to alter jeans and she barked the price. I handed her the jeans and she said "next week!" in the same rude, barking tone. I replied in a polite manner that I needed them in 3 days because I was going out of town and could they be done by then? She didn't respond and said "name?!" Came in one day carrying my leather jacket with a torn belt loop. I know leather jackets usually are specialty jobs but I came in anyway hoping they would be able to help me. I barely finished a sentence when the woman shook her head and started shoo-ing me away as if I were a lost cat. She said they don't do leather jackets (said this to me with the matching shoo wave) and that I have to take it to a specialty store. No smile, no suggestions. Seems like she could not wait to get me out of there, and this was when the place was completely empty (I may have just found out the reason why). I dropped pants off to be hemmed last week. Condescending woman at the front said "Sorry, won't be finish till next week" I said "No problem". I came back to pick them up on the date she told me to, waited in line for 20 minutes while she helped everyone who came in after me, and then she managed to tell me she lost my $200 brand new pants without any explanation. She refused to answer any of my questions and now they will not pick up the phone. I guess it's now a matter for small claims court. read more

Snow provides a great customer service and knows her job well. However, I would give this shop ZERO STARS, but you can't rate a business that low. It is TOO EXPENSIVE. I feel this shop makes up their prices based on your race, looks/economic background- [there's no display anywhere in the shop that provide a list of the prices for different services]. Also, if the owner can only take cash for the services provided which you find out after she tells the item is ready and no credit cards or anything else, the prices should be a little less than those places that take credit cards and do as good as they do the job. Again, TOO EXPENSIVE & only take cash if you look European, Hispanic, African American, Brown or any nationality. That's ashamed! read more

The staff is not friendly, they actually seemed annoyed to have people coming in to have some work done. The pants I dropped off wee altered to the correct length, but the thread they chose was not a great match to the original. And, they have a sign in the window (or did when I was last there) advertising quick turn around - when you ask for quick they say one week - not quick. The name "Alterations to go" really implies speed - nice work on naming your business. The only name that would be mroe misleading would be if they named it "Fiendly Alterations." read more

I have been coming here for a couple years, and the service and quality of work have gone down significantly. My clothing consistently has not been ready when scheduled, stitching has needed to be redone, prices have increased, details of garments have been removed, and my customer loyalty not appreciated. When they obviously cut corners and probably ruined my last garment, instead of making it right, the money I'd paid was practically thrown back into my face. There was no apology....simply dismissal. I highly recommend this place! My mom bought me a suit from Nordstrom for a Thanksgiving event. Unfortunately, the suit is slightly large in some areas. The store told me that it will take between one to two weeks for the alteration. However, I needed it way sooner. My mom brought me to see Snow. Snow is kind, friendly and very professional to work with. She spotted all of my trouble areas: shoulder take in, shorten sleeves, and take in the sides. With that amount of work, I did not have confidence that it will be ready for my Thanksgiving function. Snow assured me she would have it back to me in two days. To my surprise, she had gotten it done on time and at a fair price. I received many compliments on my suit and it fits like a charm. I high recommend this place and especially Snow. read more
