Let me start by saying I never review restaurants or businesses because I never have the time to do so but I feel like I am compelled to do so in this instance because of this outrageous experience. Background: I am a new customer here and I was recommended here by a friend of mine who works for a fashion house. My needs were generally small - alter 1 linen suit for a beach wedding in 3 weeks. Narrative: My initial impressions were positive and I was able to get a same-day appointment for my fitting. The tailor who fitted me was super friendly and pleasant to work with. He took his time and really seemed concerned about the fit of my suit. All good things here and I had no complaints or negative comments about the fitting experience. Everything went sideways from there when I went to the register to pay. I was presented with a bill for over $500. I think even the cashier seemed shocked and said, oh for being a new customer I will give you a 10% discount. That took the bill down to $450. She then asked me if I wanted to go over the various charges on the bill and I told her not to bother because I probably wouldn't understand what any of it meant anyway. The cost seemed high but given that the tailor was so friendly I shrugged it off and paid with no issue. They said it would be ready in a week or two and I went on my merry way. Thirty minutes later and literally the second I walked into my apartment, I get a call from the same cashier saying that she had just sent me an additional invoice for a balance of $155. She said she forgot to charge me for something or another and I needed to pay because they couldn't alter the suit how I wanted unless they did this thing. She said she was sorry but unfortunately I needed to pay. I didn't ask for a concession and no concession was offered to modify this late charge. I told her I would pay since I had no choice and hung up. I was seconds from paying the supplemental invoice when I figured I should check in with the person who recommended the shop. He was shocked, first at the cost and then at the bait and switch. He said he hadn't had this issue before and was really put off by it. He said to get my suit and run. So I did so. I went all the way back to the shop, took my suit and asked for a refund. In total, they were asking over $600 (that including a 10% discount) to alter this suit. It wasn't even anything fancy, it was a pretty basic $700 Todd Snyder suit. Also concerning to me was that there was a $41 service fee on my original invoice and an additional $55 service fee on the supplemental invoice. Who knows what those are for. Post Credits: As I was riding the elevator down, I frantically searched highly rated alteration shops nearby and I was able to find one a few blocks away. I went immediately there, suit fresh from Alts. They fitted me and I explained everything I needed done (matching the same alteration requests from Alts). The total of the other shop - $238 with no discount. I am grateful I checked in with my friend following the bait and switch because I was seconds from paying the added costs. A two block walk and I saved nearly $400. Buyer beware. read more

Came as a walk-in to get the straps of my dress shortened before a wedding. The staff was wonderful, friendly, and they were able to accommodate me despite not having an appointment; however, the work was unfortunately not the standard I was expecting. There were gaps between the strap end and the dress as shown in the picture. The frizzy ends of threads and the gap between the strap and fabric were so noticeable that I'm going to try to stitch it by hand myself to make to tighten the stitches attaching the strap to the fabric. Don't get me wrong, the dress fits properly now that the straps were shortened, but I was very disappointed because the strap adjustment plus the rush fee came out to about $60, and for that price, I expected more. read more

Overpriced and slow. I brought one pair of women's lyocell fabric trousers to be hemmed. After measurements i was quoted $45 for a basic hem. The hem prices listed on the website said basic hem started at $18, so $45 was a shocking price. They also needed over two weeks to complete the basic hem. I took my pants across the way to Rainbow cleaners--$20 hem done in three days. Don't waste your time with these guys. read more

It is a strapless, beaded cocktail dress with ostrich feathers along the top edge (front and back) and Ben's work on it was absolutely perfect. I went in months ago and he said to come back about a month before the wedding, so I came back in late June. Ben shared his expert opinion on what we should do about length, pinned it on both sides so that it would fit like a glove, and made me feel really calm because I knew I was in great hands. Do not go here. I visited for a simple hem and was quoted a very high cost, only a few hundred off the dress price, including a turnaround time of 2.5 weeks. Waited 20 minutes to be seen with an appointment. Meanwhile waited 30 minutes for someone to take the pins out which I would've done faster in front of them myself. read more

I had previously taken my Oscar De la Renta, and 3 lovely pieces scored at the Rachel Comey EPIC Sample sale to a local spot in Queens - and they were butchered. So I did some research and found Alteration Specialist. I was first introduced to a latin man and he was very honest about not being sure if he "could" help. but that he would try on one of the silk Rachel Dresses, and then he introduced me to MARCIA - and she instantly reminded me of my aunties from Jamaica. Who ALL KNEW how to look at a dress, cut the pattern, and make it entirely from scratch. She spent over an hour with me trying on the pieces and walking me through ALL OPTIONS so we could figure it out. She even got the team to build me a custom slip for a sheer gown I expressed having a hard time making work without one. I will let no one else alter my garments. I used their services once before for a cheaper pair of pants, and the job they did was ok. Far from perfect but at least it looked far improved than it was before. I decided to take other garments that were more pricey to them this time around. One was a skirt which was part of a set that needed to be taken in. It was of a unique color, so I asked them if they could match the stitching and they told me yes (charge of $95 for this alteration). The other was a pair of pants that also needed to be taken in (charge of $65) and a pair of jeans that needed to be taken in and hemmed (charge of $120). It was overpriced but since the skirt and pants were each around the $500 mark and the jeans were vintage and around $200, I thought it would be worth the price to get a good result. That was certainly far from the case. I first tried on the skirt, and the stitching clearly did not much. It looked like it was done roughly and in a hurry and created a patchwork effect. Initially I was willing to leave it with them so they could fix it, but I was too upset after that to inspect the other garments properly, since that was the one thing I communicated and confirmed with them during the appointment - i.e. that the stitching needed to match-. When I arrived home, I inspected the other garments more closely and realized that for : The jeans : -Uneven hem -Instead of taking apart the seams near the waist to take it in, they added unnecessary stitching The pants: - There are holes from where they undid the stitching, and then did not bother to match/fix when sewing it back together -There are 'dot' burn marks all over the fabric around the waist that are unfixable. At that point I was furious, and didn't want to risk further damage to the skirt so I called them and went to pick it up. Not only did the not do the alterations properly, but damaged my clothes (the pants cannot be fixed, since the fabric is damaged -so that's $500 down the drain, the skirt might be fixable if I find the right color thread, and the jeans are fixable), and then they kept telling me that I'm not allowing them to fix it, even though the pants aren't fixable since the fabric is damaged and the clothes(except the jeans) were handed to them with tags on and no damage. Why would I trust them when it was the worst tailoring I've ever seen in my life? I don't know if it's because I look young or they thought I was just stupid and they chose to hand me my clothes back damaged, and roughly sewn back together and call it alterations, but it just honestly boggles my mind how they even thought that was an acceptable level of work. They obviously have given me no refund yet. They said they had a no refund policy and I had to email them, even though I showed up in person, since they had to talk to 'upper management'. The response to that email was another attempt to get me to speak to their tailor. I'm already $800 down ("alteration" costs + irreparable damage to pants), and they have the audacity to try to get me to take the other pieces to them and waste more of my time, and quite possibly money if they just damage beyond repair another piece of clothing. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Look at the pictures and tell me that's $300 worth of alterations. read more

I've had several things tailored here- bust most importantly my elaborate Indian wedding dresses covered in beading and velvet that most places would find impossible to perfect. A tailor in India did a terrible job with my red ceremony dress when I purchased it, and the only reason I didn't freak out is because I knew I had Alteration Specialists back home that would be able to fix the dress to exactly how I wanted it.
