The staff is professional, very friendly & prompt. The optometrist was terrific....very pleasant & gave a top-notch exam.

Today I had a appointment to get an updated eyeglass prescription. I came in on time for my appointment. I requested a refraction only (appointment to get an updated prescription for glasses) as I already had an ophthalmologist appointment with robust testing ordered, or the medical care of my eyes in less than two weeks. The staff member told me it was "illegal" to do that. They wanted to use my insurance and do additional testing that would be duplication of what is already scheduled. I asked them not to do that, then they said they would not be able to bill my insurance. I offered to pay cash, but they declined to say what the price would be. Then the staff member dismissively told me she refuses to argue with her patient, and I declined to stay as they could not tell me what they would do to me nor what they would charge me. The doctors are great. The retail glasses-ordering side is awful. The price calculation is very confusing, between what insurance will cover vs what options you choose vs how many pairs. They can't seem to print out a price breakdown before placing the order. Next, I ordered two pairs of glasses. One was normal-use progressives and the other was bifocal computer glasses. The computer glasses arrived as single-vision, even though the prescription clearly said bifocal. An order for the correct product was made. And here's the big complaint. By default their only method of contacting customers when their glasses arrive is by text message. My phone is set to route messages from unknown senders to a separate inbox and I do not get notifications for those messages. When I made the initial order I told the person "call me when the order arrives." (Caller ID works!) They did. But I never got a call when the re-order arrived. Why not? Because their system is broken. They cannot indicate on customer account settings that the contact preference is a phone call. So my glasses arrived and they never contacted me to say so. And the brick-and-mortar eyeglasses shops wonder why customers order what they need from online providers. read more

Fast, friendly, efficient staff. There was absolutely no waiting around. I don't know about the other locations, but the Alvernon/5th location is a well-oiled machine. Went here for years & was very happy. New and very inexperienced optometrist treated me at the last appointment in such a condescending and impolite manner (I guess when you're in your early 20's, someone in their late 60's is very, very old and close to death) that I was appalled. Would not want to entrust my eyes to someone this inexperienced in working with patients. I wrote a polite and detailed letter about specific things that were said and done during the appointment and received no response at all. Not a peep. Nothing. Which made it clear my business did not matter. I did use the prescription from that appointment to try to get glasses at Costco and the prescription was not filled out correctly, so Costco had to call and get it corrected. I switched to Arizona Primary Eye Care on Tanque Verde. Not only are the doctors there courteous and professional, with all the latest testing equipment (more up to date), they have an incredible assortment of frames and, best of all, gas-permeable contact lenses at half the price that they were at Alvernon Optical. Ever since AEG had taken over the business, the quality of the glasses has definitely gone down almost putting it in par with National Vision. There used to be an in store lab where the quality of the eyeglasses was superb. I know AEG was doing this to save money but in the long run the quality suffered. read more

I had a great visit. It's been over ten years since my last eye checkup and I had a plenty of concerns. From the moment I came in I was greeted by courteous and professional staff. I had a nice chat with the receptionist and the doctor's assistant who took my initial readings. They were all very personable and helped me feel at ease. Dr. Cinalli looked at my first readings and told me that he could tell from those that my eyes were fine. But he followed that up with asking what has been bothering me, and what my concerns were. He continued and gave a very thorough eye exam and finished with a great explanation of the status of my eyesight, causes of my issues, where I can expect my eyesight to go in coming years, what sort of prescription I need, and why. I showed him my old glasses from years ago and he was honest and told me my eyesight hadn't changed enough to warrant a new set. He didn't try to swindle me into buying new frames or push any products on me. He simply explained my eyesight had changed a little since last time, but that I was good with what I had. Even still he wrote me a prescription should I have felt like updated my current pair. They gave my old pair of glasses a tune up for $6, tightening up the arms, swapping out the pads, and cleaning up the lenses. I felt like my glasses were new again. I was impressed with my whole visit and I'd recommend this place and doctor to anyone. read more

I loved the optometrist, the lady selling me the glasses was nice. The thing I didn't like is the lady that gave me the finish product. I responded to a survey they sent me and let them know that I felt the lady was rude. The manager called me and I let him know that I felt she was rude. I told him I tried to talk to the lady about it and if felt as if he didn't feel the employee was accountable. He kept making excuses for her and never admitted to any wrong doing on her part. I understand that people create relationships in the work place and that's good. However as a customer I was the one trying to use de-escalating tactics on one of their employees and was still treated as if no wrong was done. Will not go back. read more

Went to have a clients sunglass clip on fitted. Said it would take an hour. After the said hour we asked how much longer. She said the lenses were ready she was waiting for an optometrist. Meanwhile she tells the optometrist that was free to take someone to take a man before us. By the time they saw us he spent less than a minute with my client. read more

Having just moved here with a drivers license about to expire, finding a place that can get me glasses in time to take the vision test was looking like a slim chance. Every optical place I went said it was going to take a minimum of 10 days to two weeks. with no possibility of having a rush order. Even using my existing frames was going to cost more for a 'tracing fee' with no guarantee that the lenses would fit, blah, blah, blah. I went to these guys and they not only get me my glasses in FIVE days, there were no extras charges of any kind. These people will always be my go to place for all my optical needs as long as I am in the area. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and professional and despite the fact there were signs asking people to excuse the dust while they are in a state of remodel, I didn't notice anything amiss while there. No. I will never go back. I had the most awful experience with one of the optometrists, Dr. Flores. It's hard to write about it. I've been going to Alvernon Optical for more than seven years, but had never seen this particular optometrist before. The staff were friendly, and really tried to be helpful, which made it so surprising and disturbing when things went so badly. There were so many unpleasant things that happened during my eye exam, and picking up my glasses later, that I don't know where to begin. I will say this. Mistakes were made. I was given the wrong prescription, and then told that my eyes and brain would adjust. I spent a weekend not being able to see clearly and having eye strain. I was given new lenses with a scratch on one lens, and told to wear them until new ones were made. When I complained about the wrong prescription, I was told that I must have slept wrong before my eye exam, and that's why the prescription turned out wrong. Yet, I had told the optometrist three times during the eye exam that everything was blurry and were never clear. He did not care. There was never any accountability or apology. These are just a few of the very odd things that happened. It was bizarre from start to finish. I wonder how many other people have been told this kind of thing, or had a similar experience. I finally did get the right prescription, but it took a month of aggravation, and lots of work. read more

We are from out of town and, on Friday night, the frames on my husband's glasses broke to the point we didn't think they could be fixed. Based on reviews, we decided to try Alvernon Optical on Alvernon Way. According to their website, they are open from 9-1 on Saturdays. When we got there, we were greeted politely and assured that with careful attention the frames could be fixed. In a short time, the frames were fixed and there was "no charge." DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE OF BUSINESS! I called to make an appointment, they were nice enough, though I got transferred after speaking with someone about the appointment. Then they called me on Friday while I was working out at the gym asking me for "the 1-800 number on the back of my card." The member services number can be easily looked up as it is universal and a simple Google search would of provided her with this information. It is Monday and my appointment is at 11AM. I decided to call and provide them with the number just in case. I was transferred to a "Jessica." First she kept saying she could not hear what I was saying. Second, she was a BITCH! What doctor would want someone like this working for them? She said she could not find my information. TOO BAD I CALLED MY INSURANCE AND THEY GAVE ME YOUR INFORMATION! Obviously the front desk lady, Jessica has 0 IQ, doesn't know how to use google, needs a hearing aid, and the Optometrist must be rolling in the dough if they treat new prospective insured this way. Furthermore, I HAVE NEVER HAD TO CALL MY INSURANCE AT ANY OTHER MEDICAL OFFICE! THIS IS WHY THERE IS A "HEALTHCARE PROVIDER" OPTION WHEN YOU CALL! OK, so I foolishly started out at LensCrafters... Giving their employees the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they're understaffed. Mid-morning I waited for service nearly as long as they say they'll take to make your glasses. When finally "helped", the employee was distracted and not in the least bit responsive to my very simple needs. I left Lenscrafters and went to locally-owned Alvernon Optical. I immediately felt welcome and received top notch customer service throughout. I got the glasses that I wanted, spent $20 less than I would have at LensCrafters for the very same product, and I don't care that I'll have to wait a few days to get them. Eye care represents a significant investment for the typical family, including mine. I'll never go back to LensCrafters where they clearly don't honor this fact. I was fortunate to select optometrist Paula Peterson at Alvernon Optical on Alvernon to evaluate my declining vision. As expected, she diagnosed cataracts in both eyes. What I did not expect was her determination to make sure that I was fully aware of my options. She was exceptionally informative about the pros and cons of the available intra ocular lenses. She led me through the decision making to optimize my vision needs. I wanted to keep long distance acuity but be able to read smaller print. I wasn't comfortable with the idea of of one eye seeing distance and the other seeing close up. Bad for depth perception. Unlike many, I do not mind wearing glasses, so we settled on choosing long distance replacement lens for both eyes. My glasses will be plain on top and close up bifocals on the bottom. Dr Peterson also was careful to explain Medicare coverage and some options not covered by Medicare. Most importantly, she was able to arrange surgery dates for me, an out of state visitor. I have worn glasses for more than sixty years and I can honestly say I have never before experienced such good vision care. My appointment was right on time. Very pleasant staff. read more

Having just been diagnosed with a mild astigmatism, I secretly relished the idea of finally being able to indulge my longstanding if ridiculous eyewear fetish. I required a guide on this journey into eye fashion, and my friend who has been wearing stylish glasses since she was a child raved about Sharon, the talented and thorough tech who made my first experience with prescription eyewear both easy and educational. She walked me through the process of choosing frames, lens shape, color, and even the type of nose bridge I would need, patiently explaining the benefits and drawbacks of each option. She measured the angle of the lenses based on my height to make sure I would not have to tilt my head. I chose Silhouettes which are expensive, but no more so here than anywhere else. I am an enthusiastic Sharon fan, and will deal with no one else when it comes to my vision needs. One of my contacts tore last night and I had no new lenses to wear other than my old, outdated eyeglasses....no bueno! My husband and I are fairly new to Tucson and he had recently had his eye exam at Alvernon Optical, so I thought I'd give them a try as well. I sure am glad I did!! I called this morning and was told that the next opening was a week away. An entire week away! What was a girl to do? I explained to Rafael, the young man who took my call, and he double checked the schedule for openings. It was my lucky day! They had one slot open which I happily accepted. As a new patient there is always paperwork to fill out; however, this office made it painless and the wait was minimal. I saw Dr. Peterson and she was a joy meet. She is very friendly and easy to talk to. I felt like I had an old family friend giving my eye exam. We were visiting AZ from IL when my wife's prescription Kate Spade shades developed a hole in the plastic at the point where the hinge screws attach the temple piece to the glasses. We went to Alvernon without an appointment to buy new sunglasses. We were greeted courteously and promptly given Richard Esquivel, who quickly diagnosed the problem as one that could be repaired. This was good news as our insurance would not have paid for a new pair until 2015. He knew we were visitors and offered to fix the problem while we waited. This was very thoughtful, and I'm sure that he was not just idle as the place was busy. In 15 minutes he presented us with the repaired glasses. He had added a gold metal piece inside of the hole area giving the new screws a solid anchor. This is actually a stronger connection than in the original design. This prompt, knowledgeable, customer-oriented service was made even better when we asked how much. Richard smiled and said, "Oh you two just enjoy Tucson." This place gets five stars. read more
