Alvin Ord's of Bluffton is my favorite sandwich shop of all time, period. The sandwiches are consistently, insanely good. The bread they use is similar to an airy pizza crust, and topped with their three blends of cheese that are melted onto the bread before the meats and toppings are added. I've had almost the entire menu over the years, but my favorite is the simple sliced turkey, with lettuce, tomato (which I opt out of sometimes just because I'm not a huge tomato on a sandwich guy, unless it's an actual tomato sandwich...), onion, and then I ask to add their garlic mayo and banana peppers, and sometimes jalapeños. Their turkey club is a second favorite if I'm craving bacon on my sandwich (they also have a jalapeño bacon!). Their other deli sandwiches are great, like the original with a mix of luncheon and other deli meats. I love their lesser known meatball sandwich and cheeseburger. My wife's favorite is the pastrami. The staff at Alvin Ord's are some of the nicest folks I've met in the restaurant industry, and they're always super helpful to new and old customers alike. The vibe of the shop is like a little beachside surf shop, super casual and comfy, with indoor seating at mismatched tables, along with two screened in porches--one that's dog friendly. I can't recommend this place enough. I'd eat here every other day if I could--and that's only because I usually turn my regular sized sandwich into two days of lunch. read more

I went to this establishment on a recommendation from a local. I hade the Turkey Club. Now, it comes in the sizes which threw me for a loop to begin with. They use a cheese blend round bun. It really isn't a turkey club. It's more of a turkey sandwich with the fixings of a club. What I did not like at all was the bread. It totally killed the sandwich for me. It left a bad after taste. I can't really explain it. It just wasn't good. The turkey was ok. For the price of the sandwich though, I would have expected more turkey on it. There is a much better option across the street. Try Downtown Deli. It is superior to this establishment. Again, just my opinion. Try it for your self. read more

Excellent place for lunch. Most people pick up, but you can also eat there as well. They probably have seating for up to 40 people. They have specials every day which include chips and a beverage. I was there on Tuesday which featured The Salvation which is like a Muffletta containing ham, cheese, etc. Similar to an Italian sub, but served on a Ciabatta roll. Prices are reasonable. I have to say from the outset that since I moved here 8 years ago, Alvin Ord sandwiches are awesome and highly recommended. However, being born and raised in Philadelphia, I struggle with investing the long drive to Pooler to get a hoagie from Wawa. Is it worth a trip to Wawa? It's hard to say, if you know you know. I do look forward to my trips to Costco and probably go to Costco more often than I need to so that I can get a Wawa hoagie. When we arrived in Bluffton on a Monday, we were looking for a seafood market and found one (see other review for Bluffton Oyster Co.). We also were starving and Monday in the Bluffton, HHI, Hardeeville area usually yields chain restaurants or just late afternoon/early dinner places. We zipped by and I made a note to come back and check it out. Walking in there are two screened porch areas to dine al fresco/outside, and a front counter and indoor seating. It is a good size building but at peak hours you may be hard pressed for a good seat. However, it won't matter bc when you have the sandwiches at Alvin Ord's you would commit to standing for all meals just to get this heaven going on. ATMOSPHERE It is a comfortable and welcoming restaurant, love the art for sale on the walls (there are oyster canvas and wood art options I really had to tear myself away from buying), noise level is bustling but not chaotic, and customer service is above excellent and that alone would bring me back. It was a rush hour during lunch but my order was taken with care, my questions answered, and patience ruled. That alone wins in my book in this current hit and miss world of worker/customer interactions. I love that doesn't exist in Alvin Ord's and it is appreciated. FOOD YOU are here for the food so buckle up and get on. First the sandwiches. You have so many options. First decision, the bread. You have round fresh baked choice of french or whole wheat. Both are amazing. You then choose from small, medium, large. There are examples displayed on the counter to decide on. It is amazing and difficult to choose. Spoiler alert- both bread options are delicious! Sandwich #1: Pastrami on French- Medium When I ordered this I really had a hard time deciding. All looked good but i deduced in a place where people were interested, many regulars and first timers, it was time to slide to an old favorite, Pastrami, and it was the best. Piled high with thinly sliced pastrami and melted cheese with your choice of lettuce tomato onion and spicy mustard. I added jalapeno bacon and whoa, it made the sandwich soar. While I could have ordered the small, our choice to get mediums meant we ate half for lunch and then dinner the other half. Sandwich #2: Reuben on Whole Wheat - Medium. If you loved pastrami, this takes it up a notch. Add in tart sauerkraut, melted cheese and Swiss and spicy mustard. It was amazing. Side: Pasta Salad Creamy small shell pasta with bacon, ranch, sweet peas and other veggies made for an epic addition to our sandwiches. We split the side and both enjoyed the extra yumminess. We also got 2 pickle spears bc it makes for a complete deli experience. Don't even hesitate. There are awesome choices, many rave about the salvation sandwiches and those will be on the list next. Although this was my first visit, the sandwich itself is exactly what I remembered eating many years ago at Schlotzky's Deli. BLT's on fresh French bread...the best!!! Staff is always friendly and quick. They stay busy so don't blame them for the crowd. Well, it kinda is their fault ;) because the sandwiches are amazing but they try hard to take care of you as quick as possible but still give you how ever much time you need to decide what you want. The sizes of the sandwiches are stacked on the counter for you to decide which one you want. We split a medium BLT with a bag of chips and it's plenty of food for us.
