On a day of dilly dallying, my friends and I stopped by Always ice cream. Seemed like a cute little shop. I ordered one scoop of cookies and cream in a cup. I like my cookies and cream to be kinda chunky with actual cookie pieces. There wasn't any actual chunks of cookie. Just cookie crumbs blended into vanilla. Not terrible, just not my preference. Always Ice Cream is a little shop next to Kneads and two doors down from the Nine Tailed Fox in the Village of Cross Keys. If you haven't been to the Village for awhile, it's time to check it out. I first tried the Banana Pudding and Vanilla Wafers flavor awhile back and got hooked on that so I haven't been able to venture out and try as many new one flavors as I'd like because I keep coming back to the Banana pudding. Daylee let me taste all the ones that caught my eye before I made my final pick: Banana Pudding with Wafers, topped with fresh bananas, wet nuts, caramel, and chocolate sprinkles. It was exactly what I needed to turn my night around. Honestly, that was dinner, and I have no regrets. The vibe inside is funky, colorful, and spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Tried this new ice cream place for the first time. My daughter got the leprechaun bait and I got the peanut butter oreo. Leprechaun bait has a vanilla base with all kinds of stuff like cookie dough, chex mix and M&Ms. The place is nice with a few tables and they let you taste before ordering. I stopped by Always today with some friends after brunch. We tried several of the flavors before making our choices and found several of the flavors to be a little artificial tasting. (For example, I love pistachio ice cream and gelato, but not when it's bright green and artificial tasting in addition to artificially colored.) I chose a kiddie cup of their lemon poppy seed, which I enjoyed, but overall, we didn't love the flavor options or artificial flavoring of some of them. Baltimore has some tough ice cream competition. Always isn't bad, it just isn't as good as some other ice cream shops in the city. They are mixing in the freshest ingredients and top tier toppings into their batters. They do not cut corners at all. When they say brownies in the batter that's what you're getting. Like they are baking the brownies or cookies in the back then putting the entire batch of cookies or pan of brownies in the ice cream. They are not chopping things in the back to finite unrecognizable pieces then throwing it in the batter. You can taste every type of topping mixed into every bite. On beautiful days, it can get crowded here with the line out the door but they don't seem to run out of "flavas." Also despite the crowds, the staff remained high spirited and patient. I decided to try uncrustables which tasted like peanut butter and jelly. Not sure I would want an entire cup but it was tasty. I opted to get a single scoop of banana pudding ice cream. A single size scoop is more like a double. Let me tell you...I enjoyed my ice cream until the last spoonful. It was rich in flavor. I can't to go back! The staff that work here are so friendly! We brought our 2 dogs with us, and so my girlfriend stayed outside with the dogs while I went in to order. When I walked in, they asked does your pup want a pup cup? And I said yes. And then they asked whipped cream or sweet cream. They also said, that dogs were allowed to come in. That whole interaction warmed my heart. I had the cookie butter, my girlfriend had key lime pie, my daughter had mint chocolate chip and my other daughter got chocolate-vanilla soft swerve.
