It was the best salon experience I have had on the whole peninsula in the 2 years i have lived here. I've been to Oya, Studio 519, Wave Street, and a few different stylists around town. Karen was the best listener and delivered exactly what I wanted. I seem to always have trouble with explaining what I'd like for my crazy thick hair, so communication is very important to me with a stylist. Karen was direct and checked with me through to make sure we were on track. She was super friendly and knowledgeable. Even gave an amaaaaazing head massage during my wash. I cannot recommend Suay enough. I came to her very last minute on a holiday weekend and told her I was having a hair emergency. She kindly took me in at 6 PM and stayed until 9 to fix it for me. She saved my life! I'm in the army and the previous stylist didn't listen to me when I told her, most importantly, my hair can't have streaks when I put it up. This was the worst color experience that I have had in the 15 years that I have been getting highlights... Being new to the area, I looked at reviews and decided to have my highlights done at Amadeus by Suay. I've had highlights done for years, all over the world and this was by far the worst experience of my life! I asked Suay to use the crème color and volume peroxide which I always have. I much prefer having high lift with color crème rather than bleach and I have a base color which lifts easily. However, the color needs processing time of at least 30 mins and, after leaving my color to process for just 10 mins, Suay told me that it was ready to take off. Automatically alarm bells were ringing in my head, but being the polite person that I am and hoping that I was in capable hands, I trusted her. Well, obviously it hadn't lifted at all to the blonde it should have been and I left the salon having paid $170 with the same roots but with a slight caramel tinge! I hate complaining but I'd paid a ridiculous amount of money and couldn't see any difference in my hair so I rang and Suay invited me back into the salon. This is when my experience became really negative. She was incredibly defensive and angry that I had even suggested that she hadn't left the high lift on to process for long enough. Then she told me that she'd have to charge me a further $45 to achieve the color that I'd initially asked for! I couldn't believe how I was being treated. She insisted that she'd have to use bleach, not the color that I'd requested and went to mix it up. At this point, I just sat there, 30 weeks pregnant on the verge of tears, thinking I really just want to leave. So I stood up and politely said how uncomfortable I felt and that I was going to leave. That's when another stylist came over, who was lovely, and tried to comfort me. She convinced me to stay and let Suay 'correct' the color. I was expecting, after using bleach, that Suay would be adding a toner to achieve the natural blonde that I'd requested, but that was clearly one technique too far! If you're paying $170 for highlights, you expect knowledge and confidence in use of product and technique but that was clearly missing. The end result is that I now have brassy hair and defined roots where she hasn't gotten close enough. I've had to contact my old salon in NY who have advised me on what toner to use to try and make my hair look a little better. A truly unprofessional and unpleasant experience that I wouldn't want anybody else to have to endure. read more

Hated how my hair had been growing in darker, so I decided to go for it and get my hair colored at Amadeus for the first time. I was able to get an appointment very quickly, and they even called me back later when an earlier slot opened up. You can tell Suay really knows what she is doing. I decided to get a haircut too and it was the best I had received in a while (yeah, no more Great Clips for me). Then I showed her a few photos on my phone of the color I wanted and she got it perfect! With no brassiness, it's gorgeous, so natural, and the way I feel my hair is supposed to look. Today I had an appointment with Mina and she was great! I'm so glad I found her. As a mom of now two small children, I knew my long hair had to go. Too much pulling and it was just up in a bun 90% of the time anyways. I showed her a picture of just below the shoulder length hair and some lighter color and she nailed it! Being from San Francisco I have been to quite a few overpriced salons in the Marina and downtown and she blew them all out of the water. I always left with a brassy tone on my hair and an overall dissatisfied feeling. So I took a chance and went lighter. She seriously knows what she is doing. No brassy copper tones at all. She blended the new color with the previous color perfectly. She also got the length PERFECT! I was already nervous to cut my hair that short and am always worried that stylists get "cut happy" and take off more than you want. Well she wasn't that way at all. She respected the length I wanted and didn't go a centimeter shorter than I wanted. I will definitely be coming back in the future for some upkeep! read more

I've been seeing Karen Underwood for two years now and boy, do I look forward to my monthly appointments, I always leave feeling prettier. Before I met her we just talked on the phone and could tell immediately I liked er, she really listens. and was very laid back and has a ton of experience but isn't pushy. It's all about you and what you want, she will never over cut you, she wants you to feel safe and happy with the results. Outside of the color/cut, the shampoo is off the hook!! It's like her hands become magical Keebler elves working to wash all your problems away, it's life changing, really. I want to tell her how good it feels but I'm afraid I will drool all over myself. I decided to check this salon out because I found a groupon for highlights, conditioning and, a cut for Amadeus. I was able to book an appointment no problem! I met Mina at the salon and was super nice! She did let me know the Groupon only applied to those with shoulder length hair, which was not specified on Groupon (the price is $55), so she asked if she could adjust the price up to $85. I was really nervous since it was my first time at this salon and my first time getting lowlights done (my hair used to naturally lighten during the summer, but Monterey weather has since turned my hair a dull brown). But I agreed and I have absolutely no regrets! Mina asked what I wanted done and I showed her a photo of a girl with brown hair with blonde lowlights/ombré. She said no problem! She gave me a wonderful deep condition, along with a trim. When I saw my hair finally dried and styled, I was so overjoyed! I felt like a new person with my hair! She nailed exactly how the picture looked like and more! I left beyond satisfied with my investment! Mina even said she would touch up my lowlights when they started to fade for $30! I am happier with my hair than I have been in a while. Crystal looked at the picture I brought and gave me a fantastic cut, exactly what I've been wanting. She also gave me a great, warm, rich hair color that addressed my issues. I did feel the application was slightly rushed and uneven. However, she works fast and decisively, and I liked her friendly but no-nonsense personality. I felt she really listened to what I was asking for and responded, with the addition of her own experience and judgment. The salon is nice enough, but they could put more effort into the decor. It's a bit cluttered and not as functional as it could be. No good place to put my bag at the chair; no hook in the bathroom. The prices are expensive, but a Groupon made it affordable for me. I went to Suay for a cut and color a few months ago and while I did like the cut, she really dropped the ball on the highlights. I even showed her multiple pictures of EXACTLY what I wanted, and somehow she still had a very different vision. Instead of some face framing highlights I ended up with VERY orangey highlights all over! I was seriously alarmed and confused. I should have stopped her earlier but I thought with all the positive reviews, maybe I was just nervous. Nope... I asked her to dye over so much of it, it was terrible. Even after she did that, it didn't cover up the highlights entirely. It was much better though, and I did leave happy. I loved the cut so much that I went back for a trim earlier than I normally would just to maintain the shape. That's where it really went downhill... The two times I've gone to Suay, she's had to "squeeze me in" somewhere and it's always inconvenient for me. This last time, I had my appointment in the evening and she called me 2 hours earlier to ask if I could come RIGHT THEN. She didn't really give me a choice, actually. If I couldn't make it then, she was booked the rest of the year apparently? Anyway, I dropped what I was doing and went, only to have to wait 20 mins because a client showed up the wrong day for his appointment. Okay. Finally, she gets to me and does what seemed to be a great job until a few hours later when the blowout started to fall a little flatter and I noticed one side was severely shorter than the other! I made her fit me in the next day and, even though I was much nicer than I wanted to be about it, she did not hold back. She was very defensive and acted as if she couldn't see how uneven the cut was, accusing me of styling it that way myself. Lol... Sure, Jan. It was a really bizarre experience and I wont be back. I will say though, while Suay talked her way through both my cuts I watched the other stylist there do her thing and man, did those women walk out with some amazing cuts. Maybe I'll give her a try. Side note: the highlights Suay did continued to show through whatever dye (or toner) she put over it, so I decided to grab box dye and fix it myself. Now I have the EXACT color I had asked her to do. What a waste of my time and money. read more

Being in the military, I have grown accustomed to quick haircuts where little attention, if any, is given to what I actually wanted. Amadeus is the exact opposite of that. Suay pays strict attention to what I want, and she takes her time. Though there is not much variation in military-style haircuts, each person has a differently shaped head. Most barbers and stylists neglect that important fact, but Suay take all facets of her art into consideration. At the end of the cut, let her wash your hair. It feels amazing and it will relax you so much you may even go to sleep. This is an amazing place to go if you want a more personal atmosphere.
