I've called over five times over the course of two weeks and nobody answers. Terrible experience - after 5 hours and $600+ gone at this salon, my hair is ruined! I left this salon in tears after 5 hours of pure hell and spending $600+ with Johnny. Please do not go to this salon - Johnny ruined my hair. I've never had to write a bad review, ever, but my experience here was so bad that I would hate for it to happen to anyone else. I had an appointment for balayage. I brought in multiple pictures of balayage and even pictures of myself to specify exactly what I wanted. Johnny commented on how healthy and strong my hair was. I get highlights all the time at my salon back home with no issues and I didn't expect any issues here since Johnny claims to be a "balayage specialist." Johnny overly bleached my hair and left my hair stretchy (like gum) it has been a little over 1 month now and my hair has not improved one bit. I am afraid to even com my hair because it just keeps falling and breaking off. I wish I could go back and refrain myself from going to this place. It is expensive and they do not care if your hair cannot take any more bleach. Johnny should have been honest with me since the beginning instead of ruining my hair and taking my money. My car stopped working right in the middle of her driveway to her salon parking lot and instead of getting mad, she was the most kindest and sweetest person. She helped me push my car into a parking spot and than made sure I was ok and made sure I didn't need anything before she left! Hair really makes a statement, It's easy to see why hair extensions and hair implants are multi-million dollar industries every year and only continue to grow (no pun intended). It's also why people everywhere find a competent hairdresser/stylist/barber, and remain loyal for decades. Thus my insecurity with trying to find someone in Monterey who I could trust with my hair for a very important occasion, and I did find that person here at Vanity; Carissa. The salon is modern, gorgeous, and classy. The quality of the products speak for themselves, Kerastase, and Shu Uemura for example. I showed Carissa the photos of the look that I was hoping for, and she was confident that we could achieve it in no time. Sitting with her for the hour while she styled my hair was fun, and I was comfortable with the way she worked. At the end, the grand reveal was shocking. I seriously looked like something off a magazine cover, bouncy curls everywhere, volume, shine, and all sorts of diva-ness. I'm excited to see the professional photos, because just looking at myself in the mirror, I knew that the time and money was well spent in Carissa's talents. I walked out of the salon feeling like a million bucks, and overly thrilled in the outcome. So for the first time ever I tried box-dying my hair. I really wanted a dark color with a little bit of a red undertone however, my lovely hair ended up purple!!!! I probably could have made it work because it really wasn't that bad, but it definitely wasn't something that I wanted or intended for. So now how I ended up at Vanity: I looked around on yelp and after reading everyone's reviews and visiting the salon it seemed super clean, relaxed, very nice just all around well kept. I was greeted right away by who I later found out was the owner and she was super sweet and helped me book an appointment. My stylist and overall experience: had Johnnie as my stylist and he is my life saver. He was so understanding of the purple mess that I was calling hair and worked with me to find the best option to tone down the purple/red and still get me a look/color that I actually wanted. He was so helpful and after we decided a color, he wanted to do a strip test to make sure I would like how the color would actually turn out. He was just so friendly, considerate and knowledgeable in how to fix what I had done and we talked the whole time so there was none of that awkward silence. He taught me so much about my hair and explained things to me so that he knew I understood exactly what was going on throughout the entire process. I went to her at the recommendation of a coworker because I went to another stylist who put bleach in my hair even though I asked her not to my hair was a "hot mess" at my first appointment. Such a bummer they don't have a decent receptionist or scheduling system. The often don't answer the phones and even if I leave a message with the receptionist or leave a voicemail, no one answers. They told me I could make an appointment and when I called to confirm, they said that there were no notes about it and that it was now filled. When it comes to the occasional impromptu pamper-hour, I'll take a blowout over a mani/pedi any day. Vanity embraces the minimalist kinfolky all-white aesthetic, which I kinda sideye but I'll never write off a salon on the basis of its ambience (unless it's insufferably noisy). I will, however, write a salon off for having its short-haired patrons sit in a chair for well over an hour undergoing a service that, as experience and common sense would dictate, requires far less time than that. After shampooing me, my stylist clipped off my still dripping-wet hair and began the sections with a very fine-toothed round brush, devoting what felt like 20 minutes per section. After she finished drying, she handed me a mirror to view the back, and to my disappointment there were a few scattered wavy strands, and chunks of damp hair at the nape. I asked that she re-dry the nape, which she did, but when I asked that she do a once-over with the flat iron because the finished product looked like a shingled roof, she balked. And, for $50? Yikes. I could have done a superior job with the 800-watt wall-mount dryer at the hotel. read more

I was looking for a place to do my hair for my wedding and found vanitys website.. I decided to try them out, I emailed an inquiring about booking a bridal trail and was told it was $90. When I questioned why it was $90 and not $70 that it was listed on the website I was told they hadn't updated the site yet..... Okay, which could happen.. So I booked it and went to my trail. The salon is beautiful. Very open and bright. When I met with my stylist she was friendly but I felt SUPER rushed and like she half assed my trail. Now granite, I was a bit indecisive on exactly what I wanted but I showed her a few different looks. So I get it, it could have been hard at first but darn it you're a stylist, start whipping something up! She pretty much blowed dried my hair and started loose curling my hair.. Pinned it back loosely and was pretty much done. (Half up half down with a tiny poof at the back etc) Meanwhile the girl next to me who was getting her bridal trail done had her hair tightly curled and looked like she was getting married that day.... They way I thought a trail was suppose to be.. I mean how can you tell what it will look like on your big day if you can't see it on your face! I know they are two different looks but I told her I wanted tighter curls, she didn't even try to re-curl them basically asked if I wanted to wear it for the day or take it out and it was over... I paid the lady and left.. At this point I had no choice but to go to them as my wedding was in a few weeks. The day of my wedding. Pretty much the same. I did make a few changes but they didn't affect the look of the trail much.. At the end of the trail and before we started I told her I wanted tighter curls etc. I only had an hour or so before make up came but she still could've worked on my hair while doing make up... While I was getting my hair done there was another person getting their hair done for a wedding and the Stylist was extremely rude to her. Yeah I get theres time crunches and what have you but there's no need to be rude. If anything you should be mad at the receptionist who's booking these appointments NOT your client. She basically told her that she couldn't curl her hair with the curling iron because her hair was thick and she had another appointment coming in at a certain time. I'm sorry but if were paying you 150+ dollars to do our hair for a wedding, it better be perfect! I ended up with not so perfect hair for my wedding. And spending $250 (including trail) for my hair to fall and be loose during my wedding and reception. I probably wouldn't go back for an updo or wedding hair but I would definitely go back for a blow dry. That seems to be what suits them best. read more

I called Vanity salon after reading all the wonderful reviews on Yelp, and so glad I did! I'm moving to a very humid climate, and needed a different hairshape. From beginning to end they were so helpful, and communicative. When I called the staff was super friendly, and was able to get me in within a week. My appointment was scheduled with Kimberlee, and she was AWESOME! I was able to go in explaining all the weird things about my hair and she understood! I came in for a blow dry and some curls for my birthday. The curls looked awesome and perfect initially and the stylist was very friendly and cool but unfortunately the curls just didn't last. I drove home and vegged out in front of my computer for the 4 hours until my party, putting as little stress on the curls as possible so they might last. After 45 minutes just sitting there the curls were at about 50%, and after another hour they were gone. I don't make much money and this was my b-day present to myself, so I ended up feeling pretty bummed that I'd spent 45 bucks on...nothing. I had an issue arise with Vanity, however they handled it very professionally and I was grateful for such. I had scheduled a hair appointment a month in advance for a specific date, however they messed up the date, so I had to reschedule for another date. I went in on the day of my appointment and they said I wasn't scheduled for this day, but another day. I was pissed. Two times in a row? A very sweet girl (who I am kicking myself for not remembering her name, short blonde hair, she has fair skin) anyway, she came over to me and apologized immediately for the mixup. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt so I came back for the schedule appointment. Wow! They are wonderful. So sweet, they immediately knew who I was and apologized again for the mix up, they offered me a free shine treatment and did a fantastic job on my hair. I had Carissa and she was such a doll. I don't like to trust just anyone with my hair--that being said, I feel fully confident trusting any of the wonderful stylists here with my hair. When I moved to Monterey from Seattle, I needed to find a good salon and I definitely found one! Brittany cut my hair initially (she has since then moved to Seattle--ironic), so Andrea recently did my hair for me. She gave me a fabulous all-over color that was the absolute PERFECT color--exactly how I'd described it to her. All of the employees are so sweet and accommodating. The interior of the salon is very chic. White walls, modern furniture, and the only blow-dry bar that I know of in the peninsula area. Very accommodating, relaxing. Do not book with Kayhan, go to a different salon. I booked an appointment with Johnnie (because I liked his work that I saw) for just a curl for a photo shoot I was doing. I was told to come in with my hair washed and completely dried with no product. When I got to the salon they told me I was with Kayhan who told me some stylists decided to take the day off so she got their clients. It took her an hour an fifteen minutes to only curl my hair, no wash. I was so unhappy with how it looked and asked her to make a few adjustments. It looked so ratted and not curly at all. She rushed me out of her chair for her next client and charged me $50 for a "curl" knowing how unhappy I was. I cried as soon as I left. Because it took so long I missed my makeup appointment. I have called four times over the past 20 days and left messages asking for someone to return my call and no one has. Terrible salon, poor customer service. It takes me 25 minutes to curl my hair, I should have just done it myself. I don't understand how a trained, experienced stylist messes up a CURL. My hair looks HORRIBLE in the pictures almost to the point of ruining them. Kayhan ruined my special day and photos. read more

Everyone at this salon is very talented! I've been coming here for a little over a year and have seen three different stylists for haircuts. They've all done a great job and are really personable, making the time fly by. I recently went to Zoe for a haircut and am really happy with my cut! She listened to what I wanted and was able to translate it into something that suited me, all while taking into account how much effort I put into my hair (spoiler alert: it's minimal). I have been going to Kelliegh for about a year now and I am so happy to have found her. My color is great and my hair cuts are always nice. I had her do my hair for my wedding and did three trials, which I wish we could have done at one but it was more the fact that I didn't know what I wanted and what I thought I wanted really didn't look good on me! Kelliegh was very nice about it and the day of my hair looked incredible. Andrea did make up for us and again it was beautiful. I was very happy with the make up! It lasted all day and night, even through tears. Carissa did my moms hair for the wedding and it looked really beautiful and was exactly what she wanted. Carissa does a great job at blow dry bar as well. They really went out of their way to accommodate our wedding party too, many people decided they wanted to get their hair done at the last minute and the girls worked double hard to fit everyone in and do a really good job. I was referred by a local to go to Johnnie at Vanity Hair Salon. I had very dry, frizzy and rough hair. He recommended the Brazilian Blowout which I had only heard about, and promised that after the treatment I'll be able to get out of the shower and just rough dry my hair and that it will look like I just got out of the salon weeks and weeks afterwards (this is true!). He also did a haircut which looks amazing - suddenly I have really nice movement in the hair and beautiful layers. The Brazilian Blowout treatment was fabulous.
